Abstract:We characterize the approximation spaces of a broad class of bases - which includes almost greedy bases - in terms of weighted Lorentz spaces. For those bases, we also find necessary and sufficient conditions under which the approximation spaces and greedy classes are the same.

Abstract:The theory of greedy-like bases started in 1999 when S. V. Konyagin and V. N. Temlyakov introduced in \cite{KT} the famous Thresholding Greedy Algorithm. Since this year, different greedy-like bases appeared in the literature, as for instance: quasi-greedy, almost-greedy and greedy bases. The purpose of this paper is to introduce some new characterizations of 1-greedy bases. Concretely, given a basis $\mathcal B=(\mathbf x_n)_{n\in\mathbb N}$ in a Banach space $\mathbb X$, we know that $\mathcal B$ is $C$-greedy with $C>0$ if $\Vert f-\mathcal G_m(f)\Vert\leq C\sigma_m(f)$ for every $f\in\mathbb X$ and every $m\in\mathbb N$, where $\sigma_m(f)$ is the best $m$th error in the approximation for $f$, that is, $\sigma_m(f)=\inf_{y\in\mathbb{X} : \vert \text{supp}(y)\vert\leq m}\Vert f-y\Vert$. Here, we focus our attention when $C=1$ showing that a basis is 1-greedy if and only if $\Vert f-\mathcal G_1(f)\Vert=\sigma_1(f)$ for every $f\in\mathbb X$.

Abstract:The present paper is concerned with the problem of weighted best simultaneous approximations in Banach spaces. The weighted best simultaneous approximations to sequences from S- and BS-suns in the Banach space are characterized in view of the Kolmogorov conditions. Applications are provided for weighted best simultaneous approximations from RS-sets and strict RS-sets. Our results obtained in the present paper extend and improve all earlier known results in this direction.

In this paper, we study partially-greedy bases focusing our attention in two main results: -Characterization of partially-greedy bases in quasi-Banach spaces in terms of quasi-greediness and different conservative-like properties. -Given a $C$-partially-greedy basis in a quasi-Banach space, there exists a "renorming" such that the basis is $1$-partially-greedy.

Abstract:We study sparse approximate solutions to convex optimization problems. It is known that in many engineering applications researchers are interested in an approximate solution of an optimization problem as a linear combination of a few elements from a given system of elements. There is an increasing interest in building such sparse approximate solutions using different greedy-type algorithms. The problem of approximation of a given element of a Banach space by linear combinations of elements from a given system (dictionary) is well studied in nonlinear approximation theory. At first glance, the settings of approximation and optimization problems are very different. In the approximation problem, an element is given and our task is to find a sparse approximation of it. In optimization theory, an energy function is given and we should find an approximate sparse solution to the minimization problem. It turns out that the same technique can be used for solving both problems. We show how the technique developed in nonlinear approximation theory, in particular the greedy approximation technique, can be adjusted for finding a sparse solution of an optimization problem.

Abstract:We obtain Lebesgue-type inequalities for the greedy algorithm for arbitrary complete seminormalized biorthogonal systems in Banach spaces. The bounds are given only in terms of the upper democracy functions of the basis and its dual. We also show that these estimates are equivalent to embeddings between the given Banach space and certain discrete weighted Lorentz spaces. Finally, the asymptotic optimality of these inequalities is illustrated in various examples of not necessarily quasi-greedy bases.

Abstract:Graph-based approximation methods are of growing interest in many areas, including transportation, biological and chemical networks, financial models, image processing, network flows, and more. In these applications, often a basis for the approximation space is not available analytically and must be computed. We propose perturbations of Lagrange bases on graphs, where the Lagrange functions come from a class of functions analogous to classical splines. The basis functions we consider have local support, with each basis function obtained by solving a small energy minimization problem related to a differential operator on the graph. We present $\ell_\infty$ error estimates between the local basis and the corresponding interpolatory Lagrange basis functions in cases where the underlying graph satisfies a mild assumption on the connections of vertices where the function is not known, and the theoretical bounds are examined further in numerical experiments. Included in our analysis is a mixed-norm inequality for positive definite matrices that is tighter than the general estimate $\|A\|_{\infty} \leq \sqrt{n} \|A\|_{2}$.

Abstract:We introduce and study the notion of weak semi-greedy systems -which is inspired in the concepts of semi-greedy and Branch semi-greedy systems and weak thresholding sets-, and prove that in the context Markushevich bases in infinite dimensional Banach spaces, the notions of \textit{ semi-greedy, branch semi-greedy, weak semi-greedy, and almost greedy} Markushevich bases are all equivalent. This completes and extends some results from \cite{Berna2019}, \cite{Dilworth2003b}, and \cite{Dilworth2012}. We also exhibit an example of a semi-greedy system that is neither almost greedy nor a Markushevich basis, showing that the Markushevich condition cannot be dropped from the equivalence result. In some cases, we obtain improved upper bounds for the corresponding constants of the systems.

Abstract:Given a Banach space X and one of its compact sets F, we consider the problem of finding a good n dimensional space X_n \subset X which can be used to approximate the elements of F. The best possible error we can achieve for such an approximation is given by the Kolmogorov width d_n(F)_X. However, finding the space which gives this performance is typically numerically intractable. Recently, a new greedy strategy for obtaining good spaces was given in the context of the reduced basis method for solving a parametric family of PDEs. The performance of this greedy algorithm was initially analyzed in A. Buffa, Y. Maday, A.T. Patera, C. Prud'homme, and G. Turinici, "A Priori convergence of the greedy algorithm for the parameterized reduced basis", M2AN Math. Model. Numer. Anal., 46(2012), 595-603 in the case X = H is a Hilbert space. The results there were significantly improved on in P. Binev, A. Cohen, W. Dahmen, R. DeVore, G. Petrova, and P. Wojtaszczyk, "Convergence rates for greedy algorithms in reduced bases Methods", SIAM J. Math. Anal., 43 (2011), 1457-1472. The purpose of the present paper is to give a new analysis of the performance of such greedy algorithms. Our analysis not only gives improved results for the Hilbert space case but can also be applied to the same greedy procedure in general Banach spaces.

Some results on the strong uniqueness of the best approximation operator from RS-sets are proved and the uniqueness element of a sun in the compact operator space from c(0) to c(0) is characterized by the strict Kolmogorov's condition. Some recent results due to Lewicki and others are extended and improved.

Recently, some of results proved for the Weak Chebyshev Greedy Algorithm (WCGA) in the case of real Banach spaces were extended to the case of complex Banach spaces. Abstract:We consider linear approximation based on function evaluations in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of certain analytic weighted power series kernels and stationary kernels on the interval $[-1,1]$. Both classes contain the popular Gaussian kernel $K(x, y) = \exp(-\tfrac{1}{2}\varepsilon^2(x-y)^2)$. For weighted power series kernels we derive almost matching upper and lower bounds on the worst-case error. When applied to the Gaussian kernel, our results state that, up to a sub-exponential factor, the $n$th minimal error decays as $(\varepsilon/n)^n (n!)^{-1/2}$. The proofs are based on weighted polynomial interpolation and classical polynomial coefficient estimates.

Abstract:The representer theorem is one of the most important mathematical foundations for regularised learning and kernel methods. Classical formulations of the theorem state sufficient conditions under which a regularisation problem on a Hilbert space admits a solution in the subspace spanned by the representers of the data points. This turns the problem into an equivalent optimisation problem in a finite dimensional space, making it computationally tractable. Moreover, Banach space methods for learning have been receiving more and more attention. Considering the representer theorem in Banach spaces is hence of increasing importance. Recently the question of the necessary condition for a representer theorem to hold in Hilbert spaces and certain Banach spaces has been considered. It has been shown that a classical representer theorem cannot exist in general in non-reflexive Banach spaces. In this paper we propose a notion of approximate solutions and approximate representer theorem to overcome this problem. We show that for these notions we can indeed extend the previous results to obtain a unified theory for the existence of representer theorems in any general Banach spaces, in particular including $l_1$-type spaces. We give a precise characterisation when a regulariser admits a classical representer theorem and when only an approximate representer theorem is possible.

Lorentzian metric spaces and GH-convergence: the unbounded case

Abstract:We introduce a notion of Lorentzian metric space which drops the boundedness condition from our previous work and argue that the properties defining our spaces are minimal. In fact, they are defined by three conditions given by (a) the reverse triangle inequality for chronologically related events, (b) Lorentzian distance continuity and relative compactness of chronological diamonds, and (c) a distinguishing condition via the Lorentzian distance function. By adding a countably generating condition we confirm the validity of desirable properties for our spaces including the Polish property. The definition of (pre)length space given in our previous work on the bounded case is generalised to this setting. We also define a notion of Gromov-Hausdorff convergence for Lorentzian metric spaces and prove that (pre)length spaces are GH-stable. It is also shown that our (sequenced) Lorentzian metric space bring a natural quasi-uniformity (resp.\ quasi-metric). Finally, an explicit comparison with other recent constructions based on our previous work on bounded Lorentzian metric spaces is presented.

Abstract:Although the basic idea behind the concept of a greedy basis had been around for some time, the formal development of a theory of greedy bases was initiated in 1999 with the publication of the article [S.~V.~Konyagin and V.~N.~Temlyakov, A remark on greedy approximation in Banach spaces, East J. Approx. 5 (1999), no. 3, 365--379]. The theoretical simplicity of the thresholding greedy algorithm became a model for a procedure widely used in numerical applications and the subject of greedy bases evolved very rapidly from the point of view of approximation theory. The idea of studying greedy bases and related greedy algorithms attracted also the attention of researchers with a classical Banach space theory background. From the more abstract point of functional analysis, the theory of greedy bases and its derivates evolved very fast as many fundamental results were discovered and new ramifications branched out. Hundreds of papers on greedy-like bases and several monographs have been written since the foundational paper mentioned above appeared. After twenty-five years, the theory is very much alive and it continues to be a very active research topic both for functional analysts and for researchers interested in the applied nature of nonlinear approximation alike. This is why we believe it is a good moment to gather a selection of 25 open problems (one per year since 1999!) whose solution would contribute to advance the state of art of this beautiful topic.
