Abstract:Let $R$ and $S$ be commutative rings with unity, $f:R\to S$ a ring homomorphism and $J$ an ideal of $S$. Then the subring $R\bowtie^fJ:=\{(a,f(a)+j)\mid a\in R$ and $j\in J\}$ of $R\times S$ is called the amalgamation of $R$ with $S$ along $J$ with respect to $f$. In this paper, we determine when $R\bowtie^fJ$ is a (generalized) filter ring.

In this paper, we will deepen the study of the prime spectrum of the amalgamations and characterize when $R\bowtie^fJ$ is a pm-ring. We also investigate the transfer of compactly packed and properly zipped property on amalgamated constructions.

Then the subring $R\bowtie^fJ:=\{(r,f(r)+j)\mid r\in R$ and $j\in J\}$ of $R\times S$ is called the amalgamation of $R$ with $S$ along $J$ with respect to $f$. In this paper, we generalize and improve recent results on the computation of the diameter of the zero-divisor graph of amalgamated algebras and obtain new results. In particular, we provide new characterizations for completeness of the zero-divisor graph of amalgamated algebra, as well as, a complete description for the diameter of the zero-divisor graph of amalgamations in the special case of finite rings.

Abstract:Let $f:A\longrightarrow B, g:A\longrightarrow C$ be ring homomorphisms and let $\mathfrak{b}$ (resp., $\mathfrak{c}$) be an ideal of $B$ (resp., $C$) satisfying $f^{-1}(\mathfrak{b})=g^{-1}(\mathfrak{c})$. Recently Kabbaj, Louartiti and Tamekkante defined and studied the following subring $$A\bowtie^{f,g}(\mathfrak{b},\mathfrak{c}) :=\{(f(a)+b, g(a)+c)\mid a\in A, b\in\mathfrak{b}, c\in \mathfrak{c} \}$$ of $B\times C$, called the bi-amalgamation of $A$ with $(B,C)$ along $(\mathfrak{b}, \mathfrak{c})$, with respect to $(f,g)$. This ring construction is a natural generalization of the amalgamated algebras, introduced and studied by D'Anna, Finocchiaro and Fontana. The aim of this paper is to continue the investigation started by Kabbaj, Louartiti and Tamekkante, by providing a deeper insigt on the ideal-theoretic structure of bi-amalgamations.

Amalgamation in Semilinear Residuated Lattices

Abstract:We survey the state of the art on amalgamation in varieties of semilinear residuated lattices. Our discussion emphasizes two prominent cases from which much insight into the general picture may be gleaned: idempotent varieties and their generalizations ($n$-potent varieties, knotted varieties), and cancellative varieties and their relatives (MV-algebras, BL-algebras). Along the way, we illustrate how general-purpose tools developed to study amalgamation can be brought to bear in these contexts and solve some of the remaining open questions concerning amalgamation in semilinear varieties. Among other things, we show that the variety of commutative semilinear residuated lattices does not have the amalgamation property. Taken as a whole, we see that amalgamation is well understood in most interesting varieties of semilinear residuated lattices, with the last few outstanding open questions remaining principally in the cancellative setting.

Abstract:Let $F$ be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic and let $R$ be a finitely generated $F$-algebra with a filtration with the property that the associated graded ring of $R$ is an integral domain of Krull dimension two. We show that under these conditions $R$ satisfies a polynomial identity, answering a question of Etingof in the affirmative in a special case.

Abstract:Like the lower central series of a nilpotent group, filters generalize the connection between nilpotent groups and graded Lie rings. However, unlike the case with the lower central series, the associated graded Lie ring may share few features with the original group: e.g. the associated Lie ring may be trivial or arbitrarily large. We determine properties of filters such that the Lie ring and group are in bijection. We prove that, under such conditions, every isomorphism between groups is induced by an isomorphism between graded Lie rings.

Abstract:M.S. Rao recently investigated some sorts of special filters in distributive pseudocomplemented lattices. In our paper we extend this study to lattices which need neither be distributive nor pseudocomplemented. For this sake we define a certain modification of the notion of a pseudocomplement as the set of all maximal elements belonging to the annihilator of the corresponding element. We prove several basic properties of this notion and then define coherent, closed and median filters as well as D-filters. In order to be able to obtain valuable results we often must add some additional assumptions on the underlying lattice, e.g. that this lattice is Stonean or D-Stonean. Our results relate properties of lattices and of corresponding filters. We show how the structure of a lattice influences the form of its filters and vice versa.

Abstract:Let A and B be C*-algebras whose quotients are all RFD, and let C be a central C*-subalgebra in both A and B. We prove that the full amalgamated free product of A and B over C is then RFD. This generalizes Korchagin's result that amalgamated free products of commutative C*-algebras are RFD. When applied to the case of a trivial amalgam, our methods recover the result of Exel-Loring for separable C*-algebras. As corollaries to our theorem, we give sufficient conditions for amalgamated free products of maximally almost periodic (MAP) groups to have RFD C*-algebras and hence to be MAP.

Abstract:We introduce and characterize various gluing constructions for residuated lattices that intersect on a common subreduct, and which are subalgebras, or appropriate subreducts, of the resulting structure. Starting from the 1-sum construction (also known as ordinal sum for residuated structures), where algebras that intersect only in the top element are glued together, we first consider the gluing on a congruence filter, and then add a lattice ideal as well. We characterize such constructions in terms of (possibly partial) operators acting on (possibly partial) residuated structures. As particular examples of gluing constructions, we obtain the non-commutative version of some rotation constructions, and an interesting variety of semilinear residuated lattices that are 2-potent. This study also serves as a first attempt toward the study of amalgamation of non-commutative residuated lattices, by constructing an amalgam in the special case where the common subalgebra in the V-formation is either a special (congruence) filter or the union of a filter and an ideal.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative ring and $I$ be an ideal of $R$. The amalgamated duplication of $R$ along $I$ is the subring $R\Join I:=\{(r,r+i)| r\in R, i\in I\}$ of $R\times R$. This paper investigates the extended zero-divisor graph of the amalgamated duplication of $R$ along $I$. The purpose of this work is to study when $\overline{\Gamma}(R\Join I)$ and $\Gamma(R\Join I)$ coincide, to characterize when $\overline{\Gamma}(R\Join I)$ is complete, and to compute the diameter and the girth of $\overline{\Gamma}(R\Join I)$.

The Amalgamation Property for automorphisms of ordered abelian groups

Abstract:We prove that the category of ordered abelian groups equipped with an automorphism has the Amalgamation Property, deduce that their inductive theory is NIP in the sense of positive logic, and initiate a development of the latter framework. As byproducts of the proof, we obtain a generalised version of the Hahn Embedding Theorem which allows to lift each automorphism of an ordered abelian group to one of an ordered real vector space, and we show that, on existentially closed structures, linear combinations of iterates of the automorphism have the Intermediate Value Property.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the question whether a unital full free product of MF algebras with amalgamation over a finite dimensional C*-algebra is an MF algebra. First, we show that, under a natural condition, a unital full free product of two separable residually finite dimensional (RFD) C*-algebras with amalgamation over a finite dimensional C*-algebra is again a separable RFD C*-algebra. Applying this result on MF C*-algebras, we show that, under a natual condition, a unital full free product of two MF algebras is again an MF algebra. As an application, we show that a unital full free product of two AF algebras with amalgamation over an AF algebra is an MF algebra if there are faithful tracial states on each of these two AF algebras such that the restrictions on the common subalgebra agree.

Central amalgamation of groups and the RFD property

Abstract:It is an old and challenging topic to investigate for which discrete groups G the full group C*-algebra C*(G) is residually finite-dimensional (RFD). In particular not much is known about how the RFD property behaves under fundamental constructions, such as amalgamated free products and HNN-extensions. In [CS19] it was proved that central amalgamated free products of virtually abelian groups are RFD. In this paper we prove that this holds much beyond this case. Our method is based on showing a certain approximation property for characters induced from central subgroups. In particular it allows us to prove that free products of polycyclic-by-finite groups amalgamated over finitely generated central subgroups are RFD. On the other hand we prove that the class of RFD C*-algebras (and groups) is not closed under central amalgamated free products. Namely we give an example of RFD groups (in fact finitely generated amenable RF groups) whose central amalgamated free product is not RFD, moreover it is not even maximally almost periodic. This answers a question of Khan and Morris [KM82].
