Abstract:The small mass limit of the Langevin equation perturbed by $\beta$-stable Lévy noise is considered by rewriting it in the form of slow-fast system, and spliting the fast component into three parts. By exploring the three parts respectively, the limit equation and the convergence rate are derived.

Abstract:This work is devoted to deriving small mass limiting equation for a class of Hamiltonian systems with multiplicative Lévy noise. Derivation of the limiting equation depends on the structure of the stochastic Hamiltonian systems, in which a noise-induced drift term arises. We prove convergence to the limiting equation in probability under appropriate assumptions on smoothness and boundedness. Furthermore, we demonstrate convergence in moment under stronger assumptions. A Lévy type Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation result is presented as an illustrative example.

Abstract:We study the small mass limit in mean field theory for an interacting particle system with non-Gaussian Lévy noise. When the Lévy noise has a finite second moment, we obtain the limit equation with convergence rate ε+1/εN, by taking first the mean field limit N→∞ and then the small mass limit ε→0. If the order of the two limits is exchanged, the limit equation remains the same but has a different convergence rate ε+1/N. However, when the Lévy noise is α-stable, which has an infinite second moment, we can only obtain the limit equation by taking first the small mass limit and then the mean field limit, with the convergence rate 1/Nα−1+1/Np2+εp/α where p∈(1,α). This provides an effectively limit model for an interacting particle system under a non-Gaussian Lévy fluctuation, with rigorous error estimates.

Abstract:We study the small-mass limit, also known as the Smoluchowski-Kramers diffusion approximation (see \cite{kra} and \cite{smolu}), for a system of stochastic damped wave equations, whose solution is constrained to live in the unitary sphere of the space of square-integrable functions on the interval $(0,L)$. The stochastic perturbation is given by a nonlinear multiplicative Gaussian noise, where the stochastic differential is understood in Stratonovich sense. Due to its particular structure, such noise not only conserves $\mathbb{P}$-a.s. the constraint, but also preserves a suitable energy functional. In the limit, we derive a deterministic system, that remains confined to the unit sphere of $L^2$, but includes additional terms. These terms depend on the reproducing kernel of the noise and account for the interaction between the constraint and the particular conservative noise we choose.

Abstract:We study the convergence of a Zakharov system driven by a time white noise, colored in space, to a multiplicative stochastic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation, as the ion-sound speed tends to infinity. In the absence of noise, the conservation of energy gives bounds on the solutions, but this evolution becomes singular in the presence of the noise. To overcome this difficulty, we show that the problem may be recasted in the diffusion-approximation framework, and make use of the perturbed test-function method. We also obtain convergence in probability. The result is limited to dimension one, to avoid too much technicalities. As a prerequisite, we prove the existence and uniqueness of regular solutions of the stochastic Zakharov system.

Abstract:We consider the numerical approximation of the stochastic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with additive noise on the one dimensional torus. The complex nature of the equation means that many of the standard approaches developed for stochastic partial differential equations can not be directly applied. We use an energy approach to prove an existence and uniqueness result as well to obtain moment bounds on the stochastic PDE before introducing our numerical discretization. For such a well studied deterministic equation it is perhaps surprising that its numerical approximation in the stochastic setting has not been considered before. Our method is based on a spectral discretization in space and a Lie-Trotter splitting method in time. We obtain moment bounds for the numerical method before proving our main result: strong convergence on a set of arbitrarily large probability. From this we obtain a result on convergence in probability. We conclude with some numerical experiments that illustrate the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive a strong convergence rate of spatial finite difference approximations for both focusing and defocusing stochastic cubic Schrödinger equations driven by a multiplicative Q-Wiener process. Beyond the uniform boundedness of moments for high order derivatives of the exact solution, the key requirement of our approach is the exponential integrability of both the exact and numerical solutions. By constructing and analyzing a Lyapunov functional and its discrete correspondence, we derive the uniform boundedness of moments for high order derivatives of the exact solution and the first order derivative of the numerical solution, which immediately yields the well-posedness of both the continuous and discrete problems. The latter exponential integrability is obtained through a variant of a criterion given by Cox, Hutzenthaler and Jentzen [arXiv:1309.5595]. As a by-product of this exponential integrability, we prove that the exact and numerical solutions depend continuously on the initial data and obtain a large deviation-type result on the dependence of the noise with first order strong convergence rate.

Abstract:We study the long-time convergence behavior of underdamped Langevin dynamics, when the spatial equilibrium satisfies a weighted Poincaré inequality, with a general velocity distribution, which allows for fat-tail or subexponential potential energies, and provide constructive and fully explicit estimates in $\mathrm{L}^2$-norm with $\mathrm{L}^\infty$ initial conditions. A key ingredient is a space-time weighted Poincaré--Lions inequality, which in turn implies a weak Poincaré--Lions inequality.

The limit of the solution in the classical sense does not exist in this case. We study a modification of the Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation. Some applications of the Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation to problems with fast oscillating or discontinuous coefficients are considered.

Abstract:It is expected in physics that the homogeneous quantum Boltzmann equation with Fermi–Dirac or Bose–Einstein statistics and with Maxwell–Boltzmann operator (neglecting effect of the statistics) for the weak coupled gases will converge to the homogeneous Fokker–Planck–Landau equation as the Planck constant $$\hbar $$ tends to zero. In this paper and the upcoming work (He et al. in On semi-classical limit of spatially homogeneous quantum Boltzmann equation: asymptotic expansion, preprint), we will provide a mathematical justification on this semi-classical limit. Key ingredients into the proofs are the new framework to catch the weak projection gradient, which is motivated by Villani (Arch Rational Mech Anal 143(3):273–307, 1998) to identify the H-solutions for Fokker–Planck–Landau equation, and the symmetric structure inside the cubic terms of the collision operators.

Abstract:Classically, the continuous-time Langevin diffusion converges exponentially fast to its stationary distribution $\pi$ under the sole assumption that $\pi$ satisfies a Poincaré inequality. Using this fact to provide guarantees for the discrete-time Langevin Monte Carlo (LMC) algorithm, however, is considerably more challenging due to the need for working with chi-squared or Rényi divergences, and prior works have largely focused on strongly log-concave targets. In this work, we provide the first convergence guarantees for LMC assuming that $\pi$ satisfies either a Latała--Oleszkiewicz or modified log-Sobolev inequality, which interpolates between the Poincaré and log-Sobolev settings. Unlike prior works, our results allow for weak smoothness and do not require convexity or dissipativity conditions.

Abstract:We provide a refined explicit estimate of exponential decay rate of underdamped Langevin dynamics in $L^2$ distance, based on a framework developed in [1]. To achieve this, we first prove a Poincaré-type inequality with Gibbs measure in space and Gaussian measure in momentum. Our estimate provides a more explicit and simpler expression of decay rate; moreover, when the potential is convex with Poincaré constant $m \ll 1$, our estimate shows the decay rate of $O(\sqrt{m})$ after optimizing the choice of friction coefficient, which is much faster than $m$ for the overdamped Langevi dynamics.

Abstract:The barrier crossing event for superdiffusion in the form of symmetric Lévy flights is investigated. We derive from the fractional Fokker-Planck equation a general differential equation with the corresponding conditions useful to calculate the mean residence time of a particle in a fixed interval for an arbitrary smooth potential profile, in particular metastable, with a sink and a Lévy noise with an arbitrary index $\alpha$. A closed expression in quadrature of the nonlinear relaxation time for Lévy flights with the index $\alpha =1$ in cubic metastable potential is obtained. Enhancement of the mean residence time in the metastable state, analytically derived, due to Lévy noise is found.

Strong Approximation of Stochastic Semiclassical Schroedinger Equation with Multiplicative Noise

Abstract:We consider the stochastic nonlinear Schroedinger equation driven by a multiplicative noise in a semiclassical regime, where the Plank constant is small. In this regime, the solution of the equation exhibits high-frequency oscillations. We design an efficient numerical method combining the spectral Galerkin approximation and the midpoint scheme. This accurately approximates the solution, or at least of the associated physical observables. Furthermore, the strong convergence rate for the proposed scheme is derived, which explicitly depends on the Planck constant. This conclusion implies the semiclassical regime's admissible meshing strategies for obtaining "correct" physical observables.

Abstract:We provide a framework to analyze the convergence of discretized kinetic Langevin dynamics for $M$-$\nabla$Lipschitz, $m$-convex potentials. Our approach gives convergence rates of $\mathcal{O}(m/M)$, with explicit stepsize restrictions, which are of the same order as the stability threshold for Gaussian targets and are valid for a large interval of the friction parameter. We apply this methodology to various integration schemes which are popular in the molecular dynamics and machine learning communities. Further, we introduce the property ``$\gamma$-limit convergent" (GLC) to characterize underdamped Langevin schemes that converge to overdamped dynamics in the high-friction limit and which have stepsize restrictions that are independent of the friction parameter; we show that this property is not generic by exhibiting methods from both the class and its complement. Finally, we provide asymptotic bias estimates for the BAOAB scheme, which remain accurate in the high-friction limit by comparison to a modified stochastic dynamics which preserves the invariant measure.

Abstract:We investigate the convergence, in the small mass limit, of the stationary solutions of a class of stochastic damped wave equations, where the friction coefficient depends on the state and the noisy perturbation is of multiplicative type. We show that the Smoluchowski–Kramers approximation that has been previously shown to be true in any fixed time interval, is still valid in the long time regime. Namely, we prove that the first marginals of any sequence of stationary solutions for the damped wave equation converge to the unique invariant measure of the limiting stochastic quasilinear parabolic equation. The convergence is proved with respect to the Wasserstein distance associated with the norm.

Abstract:A system of stochastic differential equations describing diffusive phenomena, which has arbitrary friction depending on both state and distribution is investigated. The Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation is seen to describe dynamics in the small mass limit. We obtain the limiting equation and, in particular, the addition drift terms that appear in the limiting equation are expressed in terms of the solutions to the Lyapunov matrix equation and Sylvester matrix equation. Furthermore, we provide the rate of convergence and extend the system to encompass more general interactions and noise.
