Abstract:In this article, we investigate the possibility of generating all the configurations of a subshift in a local way. We propose two definitions of local generation, explore their properties and develop techniques to determine whether a subshift satisfies these definitions. We illustrate the results with several examples.

We classify all the Wang tilesets with two colors in which each tile has an even number of each color.

Abstract:Traditionally a tiling is defined with a finite number of finite forbidden patterns. We can generalize this notion considering any set of patterns. Generalized tilings defined in this way can be studied with a dynamical point of view, leading to the notion of subshift. In this article we establish a correspondence between an order on subshifts based on dynamical transformations on them and an order on languages of forbidden patterns based on computability properties.

Decision problems on geometric tilings

Abstract:We study decision problems on geometric tilings. First, we study a variant of the Domino problem where square tiles are replaced by geometric tiles of arbitrary shape. We show that, under some weak assumptions, this variant is undecidable regardless of the shapes, extending previous results on rhombus tiles. This result holds even when the geometric tiling is forced to belong to a fixed set.Second, we consider the problem of deciding whether a geometric subshift has finite local complexity, which is a common assumption when studying geometric tilings. We show that it is undecidable even in a simple setting (square shapes with small modifications).

Local Electronic Properties of Two-Dimensional Penrose Tilings: A Renormalization-Group Approach.

Abstract:A real-space renormalization-group (RSRG) scheme is developed to study the local electronic properties of the two-dimensional Penrose tilings. The RSRG transformations are derived in terms of the inflation rule of the Penrose tilings. Two basic transformations T(alpha) and T(beta) are introduced, of which T(alpha) transforms a rhombus (R) Penrose tiling to a kite-dart (KD) Penrose tiling, while T(beta) transforms a KD Penrose tiling to a R Penrose tiling. Suitable combinations of them give rise to two transformations T1 and T2, of which T1 or T2 transforms a R or KD Penrose tiling to the same kind of quasiperiodic tiling that is scaled by a factor of tau(2), in which tau = (square-root 5 + 1)/2 is the golden mean. By infinite iterations of T1 or T2, we obtain the local Green's functions and the local densities of states (LDOS) at the key sites of the R or KD Penrose tilings. The LDOS at the key sites of the R Penrose tilings are numerically calculated and are consistent with the results obtained by others.

Abstract:We use the subgraph replacement method to investigate new properties of the tilings of regions on the square lattice with diagonals drawn in. In particular, we show that the centrally symmetric tilings of a generalization of the Aztec diamond are always enumerated by a simple product formula. This result generalizes the previous work of Ciucu (1997) and Yang (1992) about symmetric tilings of the Aztec diamond. We also use our method to prove a closed-form product formula for the number of centrally symmetric tilings of a quasi-hexagon.

Abstract:A tiling is said to have infinite local complexity (ILC) if it contains infinitely many two-tile patches up to rigid motions. In this work, we provide examples of substitution rules that generate tilings with ILC. The proof relies on Danzer's algorithm, which assumes that the substitution factor is non-Pisot. In addition to ILC, the tiling space of each substitution rule contains a tiling that exhibits global n-fold rotational symmetry, n=13,17,21.

Undecidable translational tilings with only two tiles, or one nonabelian tile

Abstract:We construct an example of a group $G = \mathbb{Z}^2 \times G_0$ for a finite abelian group $G_0$, a subset $E$ of $G_0$, and two finite subsets $F_1,F_2$ of $G$, such that it is undecidable in ZFC whether $\mathbb{Z}^2\times E$ can be tiled by translations of $F_1,F_2$. In particular, this implies that this tiling problem is aperiodic, in the sense that (in the standard universe of ZFC) there exist translational tilings of $E$ by the tiles $F_1,F_2$, but no periodic tilings. Previously, such aperiodic or undecidable translational tilings were only constructed for sets of eleven or more tiles (mostly in $\mathbb{Z}^2$). A similar construction also applies for $G = \mathbb{Z}^d$ for sufficiently large $d$. If one allows the group $G_0$ to be non-abelian, a variant of the construction produces an undecidable translational tiling with only one tile $F$. The argument proceeds by first observing that a single tiling equation is able to encode an arbitrary system of tiling equations, which in turn can encode an arbitrary system of certain functional equations once one has two or more tiles. In particular, one can use two tiles to encode tiling problems for an arbitrary number of tiles.

Abstract:We prove that for any infinite countable amenable group G, any epsilon > 0 and any finite subset K subset of G, there exists a tiling (partition of G into finite "tiles" using only finitely many "shapes"), where all the tiles are (K, epsilon)-invariant. Moreover, our tiling has topological entropy zero (i.e., subexponential complexity of patterns). As an application, we construct a free action of G (in the sense that the mappings, associated to elements of G other than the unit, have no fixed points) on a zero-dimensional space, such that the topological entropy of this action is zero.

Abstract:For any $\lambda>2$, we construct a substitution on an infinite alphabet which gives rise to a substitution tiling with inflation factor $\lambda$. In particular, we obtain the first class of examples of substitutive systems with transcendental inflation factors that possess usual dynamical properties enjoyed by primitive substitutions on finite alphabets. We show that both the associated subshift and tiling dynamical systems are strictly ergodic, which is related to the quasicompactness of the underlying substitution operator. We also provide an explicit substitution with transcendental inflation factor $\lambda$.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of "local stability in permutations" for finitely generated groups. If a group is sofic and locally stable in our sense, then it is also locally embeddable into finite groups (LEF). Our notion is weaker than the "permutation stability" introduced by Glebsky-Rivera and Arzhantseva-Paunescu, which allows one to upgrade soficity to residual finiteness. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for an amenable group to be locally permutation stable, in terms of invariant random subgroups (IRSs), inspired by a similar criterion for permutation stability due to Becker, Lubotzky and Thom. We apply our criterion to prove that derived subgroups of topological full groups of Cantor minimal subshifts are locally stable, using Zheng's classification of IRSs for these groups. This last result provides continuum-many groups which are locally stable, but not stable.

Universality for Lozenge Tiling Local Statistics

Abstract:In this paper we consider uniformly random lozenge tilings of arbitrary domains approximating (after suitable normalization) a closed, simply-connected subset of $\mathbb{R}^2$ with piecewise smooth, simple boundary. We show that the local statistics of this model around any point in the liquid region of its limit shape are given by the infinite-volume, translation-invariant, extremal Gibbs measure of the appropriate slope, thereby confirming a prediction of Cohn-Kenyon-Propp from 2001 in the case of lozenge tilings. Our proofs proceed by locally coupling a uniformly random lozenge tiling with a model of Bernoulli random walks conditioned to never intersect, whose convergence of local statistics has been recently understood by the work of Gorin-Petrov. Central to implementing this procedure is to establish a local law for the random tiling, which states that the associated height function is approximately linear on any mesoscopic scale.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of local Hilbert--Schmidt stability, motivated by the recent definition by Bradford of local permutation stability, and give examples of (non-residually finite) groups that are locally Hilbert--Schmidt stable but not Hilbert--Schmidt stable. For amenable groups, we provide a criterion for local Hilbert--Schmidt stability in terms of group characters, by analogy with the character criterion of Hadwin and Shulman for Hilbert--Schmidt stable amenable groups. Furthermore, we study the (very) flexible analogues of local Hilbert--Schmidt stability, and we prove several results analogous to the classical setting. Finally, we prove that infinite sofic, respectively hyperlinear, property (T) groups are never locally permutation stable, respectively locally Hilbert--Schmidt stable. This strengthens the result of Becker and Lubotzky for classical stability, and answers a question of Lubotzky.

Abstract:We look at sets of tiles that can tile any region of size greater than 1 on the square grid. This is not the typical tiling question, but relates closely to it and therefore can help solve other tiling problems -- we give an example of this. We also present a result to a more classic tiling question with dominoes and L-shape tiles.

On the Number of Distinct Tilings of Finite Subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ With Tiles of Fixed Size

Abstract:In this work, we study the number of finite tiles $A\subset\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ of size $\alpha$ that translationally tile a finite $C\subset\mathbb{Z}^{d}$. We consider two tiles $A$ and $A'$ to be congruent if and only if one can be transformed into the other via some translation. We make several significant contributions to the study of this problem. For any $\alpha\in\mathbb{Z}^{+}$ and $C=[x_{1}]\times[x_{2}]\times\ldots [x_{d}]$ where $x_{1},\ldots,x_{d}\in\mathbb{Z}^{+}$ (which we refer to as a finite contiguous $C$), we give an efficient method for enumerating all elements of $\mathcal{T}(\alpha,C)$, where $(A,B)\in \mathcal{T}(\alpha,C)$ if and only if $A,B\subset\mathbb{Z}^{d}$, the Minkowsji sum of $A$ and $B$ equals $C$, the size of $A$ equals $\alpha$, and $|C|=\alpha|B|$. We then use this to prove a partial order on $|\mathcal{T}(\alpha,C)|$ with respect to $\alpha$ for any finite contiguous $C$. We then study the extremal question as to the the growth rate of $\text{max}_{\alpha,C}[|\mathcal{T}(\alpha,C)|]$ with respect to $|C|$. For finite contiguous $C$, we improve the trivial lower and upper bounds of $\log n$ and ${n\choose n/2}$ respectively to an upper bound of \[n^{\frac{(1+\epsilon)\log n}{\log\log n}}\] and an infinitely often super-polynomial lower bound such that, for all constants $c$ and some infinite $N\subset\mathbb{Z}^{+}$, \[\forall n\in N, \exists\alpha\in\mathbb{Z}^{+}(|\mathcal{T}(\alpha,C)|>n^{c}),\] where $n=|C|$. We conjecture that the number of tilings of any finite contiguous $C$ by tiles of size $\alpha$ is an upper bound on the number of tilings of any finite $C'\subset \mathbb{Z}^{d}$ by tiles of size $\alpha$. To begin working towards this, we prove that any $A$ of size $\alpha$ that tiles some finite contiguous $C$ itself has at most as many tilings by tiles of size $\alpha'$ as there are tilings of $[\alpha]$ by tiles of size $\alpha'$.

Contractible subshifts

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a contractible subshift. This is a strengthening of the notion of strong irreducibility, where we require that the gluings are given by a block map. We show that a subshift is a retract of a full shift if and only if it is a contractible SFT with a fixed point. For virtually polycyclic groups, contractibility implies dense periodic points. We introduce a ``homotopy theory'' framework for working with this notion, and ``contractibility'' is in fact simply an analog of the usual contractibility in algebraic topology. We also explore the symbolic dynamical analogs of homotopy equivalence and equiconnectedness of subshifts. Contractibility is implied by the map extension property of Meyerovitch, and among SFTs, it implies the finite extension property of Briceño, McGoff and Pavlov. We include thorough comparisons with these classes. We also encounter some new group-geometric notions, in particular a periodic variant of Gromov's asymptotic dimension of a group.

Shifts of Finite Type on Locally Finite Groups

Abstract:In this work, we prove that every SFT, sofic shift, and strongly irreducible shift on locally finite groups has strong dynamical properties. These properties include that every sofic shift is an SFT, every SFT is strongly irreducible, every strongly irreducible shift is an SFT, every SFT is entropy minimal, and every SFT has a unique measure of maximal entropy, among others. In addition, we show that if every SFT on a group is strongly irreducible, or if every sofic shift is an SFT, then the group must be locally finite, and this extends to all of the properties we explore. These results are collected in two main theorems which characterizes the local finiteness of groups by purely dynamical properties. In pursuit of these results, we present a formal construction of \textit{free extension} shifts on a group $G$, which takes a shift on a subgroup $H$ of $G$, and naturally extends it to a shift on all of $G$.

Overlapping substitutions and tilings

Abstract:Inspired by Ziherl, Dotera and Bekku [17],we generalize the notion of (geometric) substitution rule to obtain overlapping substitutions. For such a substitution, the substitution matrix may have non-integer entries. We give the meaning of such a matrix by showing that the right Perron--Frobenius eigenvector gives the patch frequency of the resulting tiling. We also show that the expansion constant is an algebraic integer under mild conditions. In general, overlapping substitutions may yield a patch with contradictory overlaps of tiles, even if it is locally consistent. We give a sufficient condition for an overlapping substitution to be consistent, that is, no such contradiction will emerge. We also give many one-dimensional examples of overlapping substitution. We finish by mentioning a construction of overlapping substitutions from Delone multi-sets with inflation symmetry.

Abstract:In a 2005 paper, Casacuberta, Scevenels and Smith construct a homotopy idempotent functor $E$ on the category of simplicial sets with the property that whether it can be expressed as localization with respect to a map $f$ is independent of the ZFC axioms. We show that this construction can be carried out in homotopy type theory. More precisely, we give a general method of associating to a suitable (possibly large) family of maps, a reflective subuniverse of any universe $\mathcal{U}$. When specialized to an appropriate family, this produces a localization which when interpreted in the $\infty$-topos of spaces agrees with the localization corresponding to $E$. Our approach generalizes the approach of [CSS] in two ways. First, by working in homotopy type theory, our construction can be interpreted in any $\infty$-topos. Second, while the local objects produced by [CSS] are always 1-types, our construction can produce $n$-types, for any $n$. This is new, even in the $\infty$-topos of spaces. In addition, by making use of universes, our proof is very direct. Along the way, we prove many results about "small" types that are of independent interest. As an application, we give a new proof that separated localizations exist. We also give results that say when a localization with respect to a family of maps can be presented as localization with respect to a single map, and show that the simplicial model satisfies a strong form of the axiom of choice which implies that sets cover and that the law of excluded middle holds.
