A decomposition theorem for the affine Springer fibers

Abstract:According to Laumon, an affine Springer fiber is homeomorphic to the universal abelian covering of the compactified Jacobian of a spectral curve. We construct equivariant deformations $f_{n}:\overline{\mathcal{P}}_{n}\to \mathcal{B}_{n}$ of the finite abelian coverings of this compactified Jacobian, and decompose the complex $Rf_{n,*}\mathbf{Q}_{\ell}$ as direct sum of intersection complexes. Pass to the limit, we obtain a similar expression for the homology of the affine Springer fibers. A quite surprising consequence is that we can reduce the homology to its $\Lambda^{0}$-invariant subspace. As an application, we get a sheaf-theoretic reformulation of the purity hypothesis of Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson. In an attempt to solve it, we propose a conjecture about the punctural weight of the intermediate extension of a smooth $\ell$-adic sheaf of pure weight.

Abstract:We establish dimension formulas for the Witt vector affine Springer fibers associated to a reductive group over a mixed characteristic local field, under the assumption that the group is essentially tamely ramified and the residue characteristic is not bad. Besides the discriminant valuations that show up in classical works on the usual affine Springer fibers, our formula also involves the Artin conductors and the Kottwitz invariants of the relevant conjugacy classes.

Abstract:We compute the Borel-Moore homology of unramified affine Springer fibers for $\mathrm{GL}_n$ under the assumption that they are equivariantly formal and relate them to certain ideals discussed by Haiman. For $n=3$, we give an explicit description of these ideals, compute their Hilbert series, generators and relations, and compare them to generalized $(q,t)$ Catalan numbers. We also compare the homology to the Khovanov-Rozansky homology of the associated link, and prove a version of a conjecture of Oblomkov, Rasmussen, and Shende in this case.

Abstract:For any connected reductive group G over ${{\mathbb {C}}}$, we revisit Goresky–Kottwitz–MacPherson's description of the torus equivariant Borel–Moore homology of affine Springer fibers ${\mathrm {Sp}}_{\gamma }\subset {{\,\mathrm{Gr}\,}}_G$, where $\gamma =zt^d$ and z is a regular semisimple element in the Lie algebra of G. In the case $G=GL_n$, we relate the equivariant cohomology of ${\mathrm {Sp}}_\gamma $ to Haiman's work on the isospectral Hilbert scheme of points on the plane. We also explain the connection to the HOMFLY homology of (n, dn)-torus links, and formulate a conjecture describing the homology of the Hilbert scheme of points on the curve $\{x^n=y^{dn}\}$.

Abstract:Let G be an almost linear Nash group, namely, a Nash group that admits a Nash homomorphism with finite kernel to some GLk(R). A homology theory (the Schwartz homology) is established for the category of smooth Fréchet representations of G of moderate growth. Frobenius reciprocity and Shapiro's lemma are proved in this category. As an application, we give a criterion for automatic extensions of Schwartz homologies of Schwartz sections of a tempered G-vector bundle.

Abstract:We introduce parabolic multiplicative affine Springer fibers, which resemble the admissible union of affine Deligne Lusztig varieties in the affine flag variety. We also study their global counterparts called parabolic multiplicative Hitchin fibers. Their associated fibration is a global analogue of the Grothendieck simultaneous resolution for monoids. Using this fibration, we show that the parabolic multiplicative affine Springer fibers are equidimensional and find their dimension.

Abstract:We establish several foundational results regarding the Grothendieck-Springer affine fibration. More precisely, we prove some constructibility results on the affine Grothendieck-Springer sheaf and its coinvariants, enrich it with a group of symmetries, analog to the situation of Hitchin fibration, prove some perversity statements once we take some derived coinvariants and construct some specialization morphisms for the homology of affine Springer fibers. Along the way, we prove some homotopy result on l-adic complexes that can also be applied to Hitchin fibration.

Abstract:We define certain closed subvarieties of the flag variety, Hessenberg ideal fibers, and prove that they are paved by affines. Hessenberg ideal fibers are a natural generalization of Springer fibers. In type $G_2$, we give explicit descriptions of all Hessenberg ideal fibers, study some of their geometric properties and use them to completely classify Tymoczko's dot actions of the Weyl group on the cohomology of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties.

Abstract:Consider a simple algebraic group $G$ of classical type and its Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. Let $(e,h,f) \subset \mathfrak{g}$ be an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triple and $Q_e= C_G(e,h,f)$. The torus $T_e$ that comes from the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triple acts on the Springer fiber $\mathcal{B}_e$. Let $\mathcal{B}_e^{gr}$ denote the fixed point loci of $\mathcal{B}_e$ under this torus action. Our main geometric result is that when the partition of $e$ has up to $4$ rows, the derived category $D^b(\mathcal{B}_e^{gr})$ admits a complete exceptional collection that is compatible with the $Q_e$-action. The objects in this collection give us a finite set $Y_e$ that is naturally equipped with a $Q_e$-centrally extended structure. We prove that the set $Y_e$ constructed in this way coincides with a finite set that has appeared in various contexts in representation theory. For example, a direct summand $J_c$ of the asymptotic Hecke algebra is isomorphic to $K_0(Sh^{Q_e}(Y_e\times Y_e)$. The left cells in the two-sided cell $c$ corresponding to the adjoint orbit of $e$ are in bijection with the $Q_e$-orbits in $Y_e$. Our main numerical result is an algorithm to compute the multiplicities of the $Q_e$-centrally extended orbits that appear in $Y_e$.

Abstract:We prove the $P=W$ conjecture for $\mathrm{GL}_n$ for all ranks $n$ and curves of arbitrary genus $g\geq 2$. The proof combines a strong perversity result on tautological classes with the curious Hard Lefschetz theorem of Mellit. For the perversity statement, we apply the vanishing cycles constructions in our earlier work to global Springer theory in the sense of Yun, and prove a parabolic support theorem.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple Lie group. Consider a nilpotent element $e\in \mathfrak{g}$. Let $Z_G(e)$ be the centralizer of $e$ in $G$, and let $A_e:= Z_G(e)/Z_G(e)^{o}$ be its component group. Write $\text{Irr}(\mathcal{B}_e)$ for the set of irreducible components of the Springer fiber $\mathcal{B}_e$. We have an action of $A_e$ on $\text{Irr}(\mathcal{B}_e)$. When $\mathfrak{g}$ is exceptional, we give an explicit description of $\text{Irr}(\mathcal{B}_e)$ as an $A_e$-set. For $\mathfrak{g}$ of classical type, we describe the stabilizers for the $A_e$-action. With this description, we prove a conjecture of Lusztig and Sommers. These results suggest highly nontrivial relations between Springer fibers and cells in Weyl groups.

The affine Grassmannian as a presheaf quotient

Abstract:For a reductive group $G$ over a ring $A$, its affine Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_G$ plays important roles in a wide range of subjects and is typically defined as the étale sheafification of the presheaf quotient $LG/L^+G$ of the loop group $LG$ by its positive loop subgroup $L^+G$. We show that the Zariski sheafification gives the same result. Moreover, for totally isotropic $G$ (for instance, for quasi-split $G$), we show that no sheafification is needed at all: $\mathrm{Gr}_G$ is already the presheaf quotient $LG/L^+G$, which seems new already in the classical case of $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over $\mathbb{C}$. For totally isotropic $G$, we also show that the affine Grassmannian may be formed using polynomial loops. We deduce all of these results from the study of $G$-torsors on $\mathbb{P}^1_A$ that is ultimately built on the geometry of $\mathrm{Bun}_G$.

Abstract:In this paper, we translate the Springer theory of Weyl group representations into the language of symplectic topology. Given a semisimple complex group G, we describe a Lagrangian brane in the cotangent bundle of the adjoint quotient g/G that produces the perverse sheaves of Springer theory. The main technical tool is an analysis of the Fourier transform for constructible sheaves from the perspective of the Fukaya category. Our results can be viewed as a toy model of the quantization of Hitchin fibers in the Geometric Langlands program.

Abstract:The $\Delta$-Springer fibers $Y_{n,\lambda,s}$, introduced by Levinson, Woo, and the second author, generalize Springer fibers for $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ and give a geometric interpretation of the of the Delta Conjecture from algebraic combinatorics (at $t=0$). We prove that all irreducible components of the $\Delta$-Springer fiber $Y_{n,n-1}=Y_{n,(1^{n-1}),n-1}$ are smooth. In fact, we prove that any intersection of irreducible components of $Y_{n,n-1}$ is a smooth Hessenberg variety which has the structure of an iterated Grassmannian fiber bundle. We then give a presentation of the singular cohomology ring of each irreducible component of $Y_{n,n-1}$ and a combinatorial formula for the Poincaré polynomial of an arbitrary union of intersections of irreducible components in terms of arm and leg statistics on Dyck paths.

Abstract:If $X$ is a closed $2n$-dimensional aspherical manifold, i.e., the universal cover of $X$ is contractible, then the Chern-Hopf-Thurston conjecture predicts that $(-1)^n\chi(X)\geq 0$. We prove this conjecture when $X$ is a complex projective manifold whose fundamental group admits an almost faithful linear representation over any field. In fact, we prove a much stronger statement that if $X$ is a complex projective manifold with large fundamental group and $\pi_1(X)$ admits an almost faithful linear representation, then $\chi(X, \mathcal{P})\geq 0$ for any perverse sheaf $\mathcal{P}$ on $X$. To prove this, we introduce a vanishing cycle functor of multivalued one-forms and apply techniques from non-abelian Hodge theory, both in archimedean and non-archimedean settings. These techniques allow us to deduce the desired positivity from the geometric properties of pure and mixed period maps.

Abstract:Let $u\in\mathrm{End}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ be nilpotent. The variety of $u$-stable complete flags is called the Springer fiber over $u$. Its irreducible components are parameterized by a set of standard Young tableaux. The Richardson (resp. Bala-Carter) components of Springer fibers correspond to the Richardson (resp. Bala-Carter) elements of the symmetric group, through Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Every Richardson component is isomorphic to a product of standard flag varieties. On the contrary, the Bala-Carter components are very susceptible to be singular. First, we characterize the singular Bala-Carter components in terms of two minimal forbidden configurations. Next, we introduce two new families of components, wider than the families of Bala-Carter components and Richardson components, and both in duality via the tableau transposition. The components in the first family are characterized by the fact that they have a dense orbit of special type under the action of the stabilizer of $u$, whereas all components in the second family are iterated fiber bundles over projective spaces.
