Abstract:In this paper we study the global dynamics of the inverted spherical pendulum with a vertically vibrating suspension point in the presence of an external horizontal periodic force field. We do not assume that this force field is weak or rapidly oscillating. We prove that there always exists a non-falling periodic solution, i.e., there exists an initial condition such that the rod of the pendulum never becomes horizontal along the corresponding solution. We also show numerically that there exists an asymptotically stable non-falling solution for a wide range of parameters of the system.

Abstract:The Foucault Pendulum is a Spherical Pendulum of fixed length with two angular degrees of freedom, attached to a suspension which rotates once a day around the Earth axis at a distance essentially set by Earth radius and the geodetic latitude of the pendulum. We write the Lagrange Function in the inertial frame of the fixed Earth axis and couple it strictly to the rotating frame at which the suspension appears at rest. The Euler-Lagrange equations are a coupled system of second-order differential equations for the two coordinates of the mass projected on the local horizontal plane. These are solved numerically in a C++ program which allows to study the trajectories beyond the various standard approximations of the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, Newton's equations are solved to describe the motion of a conical pendulum in a rotating frame for the right- and left-hand conical oscillations. If the pendulum is started with the initial angular velocity ( ± ω 0 − Ω z ), with ω 0 being the frequency of pendulum oscillation and Ω z the angular velocity of the rotating frame around the z-axis, the paths are shown to be circular, which would apparently indicate that the Coriolis force becomes non-effective in the rotating frame. This paper explains why the paths in the rotating frame are circular, and the difference between the periods for the right- and left-handed rotations is calculated analytically. It is also shown that in an inertial frame, the conical pendulum follows an elliptical path. As the Bravais pendulum is a conical pendulum oscillating at Earth's surface, its motion is also discussed.

The behaviour of a forced spherical pendulum operating in a weightless environment

Abstract:Summary In this article, we show that by subjecting the pivot of a simple inextensible pendulum to small amplitude high frequency rectilinear oscillations it is possible to make it operate in a weightless environment. The axis of vibration of the pivot defines a preferred direction in space and a consequential dynamical structure which is completely absent when the pivot is fixed. Using spherical polar coordinates centred at the pivot, we show that the motion of such a pendulum has fast and slow-scale components which we analyse using the method of multiple scales. The slow scale equation for the polar angle is autonomous, and a phase plane analysis reveals the essential orbital structure including the existence of conical solutions analogous to the terrestrial fixed pivot conical pendulum. In the absence of an azimuthal velocity component, its behaviour can provide a direct simulation of a plane terrestrial simple fixed pivot pendulum with a correspondingly simple form for the small amplitude period. We can also use a two-scale analysis to examine the effects of damping. Here, the slow scale polar equation has two asymptotically stable states, and we employ a combination of numerical and asymptotic analyses to elicit the slow scale orbital trajectories.

Abstract:The National Fusion Collaboratory (NFC) project was created to advance scientific understanding and innovation in magnetic fusion research by enabling more efficient use of existing experimental facilities through more effective integration of experiment, theory, and modeling. To achieve this objective, NFC introduced the concept of "network services", which build on top of computational Grids, and provide Fusion codes, together with their maintenance and hardware resources as a service to the community. This mode of operation requires the development of new authorization and enforcement capabilities. In addition, the nature of Fusion experiments places strident quality of service requirements on codes run during the experimental cycle. In this paper, we describe Grid computing requirements of the Fusion community, and present our first experiments in meeting those requirements.

Abstract:The Lagrange theory of particle motion in the noninertial systems is applied to the Foucault pendulum, isosceles triangle pendulum and the general triangle pendulum swinging on the rotating Earth. As an analogue, planet orbiting in the rotating galaxy is considered as the the giant galactic gyroscope. The Lorentz equation and the Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equations are generalized for the rotation system. The knowledge of these equations is inevitable for the construction of LHC where each orbital proton "feels" the Coriolis force caused by the rotation of the Earth.
A Short Foucault Pendulum Free of Ellipsoidal Precession

Abstract:A quantitative method is presented for stopping the intrinsic precession of a spherical pendulum due to ellipsoidal motion. Removing this unwanted precession renders the Foucault precession due to the turning of the Earth readily observable. The method is insensitive to the size and direction of the perturbative forces leading to ellipsoidal motion. We demonstrate that a short (three meter) pendulum can be pushed in a controlled way to make the Foucault precession dominant. The method makes room-height or table-top Foucault pendula more accurate and practical to build.

Abstract:A high fidelity model is developed for an elastic string pendulum, one end of which is attached to a rigid body while the other end is attached to an inertially fixed reel mechanism which allows the unstretched length of the string to be dynamically varied. The string is assumed to have distributed mass and elasticity that permits axial deformations. The rigid body is attached to the string at an arbitrary point, and the resulting string pendulum system exhibits nontrivial coupling between the elastic wave propagation in the string and the rigid body dynamics. Variational methods are used to develop coupled ordinary and partial differential equations of motion. Computational methods, referred to as Lie group variational integrators, are then developed, based on a finite element approximation and the use of variational methods in a discrete-time setting to obtain discrete-time equations of motion. This approach preserves the geometry of the configurations, and leads to accurate and efficient algorithms that have guaranteed accuracy properties that make them suitable for many dynamic simulations, especially over long simulation times. Numerical results are presented for typical examples involving a constant length string, string deployment, and string retrieval. These demonstrate the complicated dynamics that arise in a string pendulum from the interaction of the rigid body motion, elastic wave dynamics in the string, and the disturbances introduced by the reeling mechanism. Such interactions are dynamically important in many engineering problems, but tend be obscured in lower fidelity models.

Abstract:We investigate the nonlinear behavior of a simple pendulum fixed to an elastic rod, which can only vibrate horizontally. When released without initial angular momentum, the plane of the pendulum rotates, and the bob traces a delicate stationary pattern. We explain this effect as amplitude modulation due to the nonlinear coupling between the two degrees of freedom. We construct a theoretical model and approximately solve the equations of motion analytically (using the method of multiple scales); we also solve these equations numerically. In the analytical solution, the modulation period depends not only on the dynamical parameters but also on the pendulum's initial release position, which is typical of nonlinear systems. Finally, we build a simple apparatus and conduct a quantitative experiment. The approximate analytical solutions exhibit the same trends as the numerical results and experimental data. After adding linear dissipation, the numerical and experimental results match fairly well. This system can serve as an instructive demonstration as well as a nonlinear dynamics research project for undergraduate students.

Abstract:The study of the pendulum problem lies at the intersection of mathematics and physics, with a focus on its representation through differential equations. However, finding analytical solutions using conventional techniques is often challenging. Typically, the analysis is confined to the simplest case of small oscillation amplitudes, where harmonic motion can be accurately described using less complex techniques. Yet, when dealing with large oscillations, the complexity increases, necessitating the use of numerical methods to approximate the solutions of the nonlinear differential equations involved. In this research, we aim to numerically solve for the angular velocity of a damped oscillating rigid pendulum rotating on a pivot under the influence of a uniform gravitational force in the vertical direction. We will propose initial conditions for the differential equation governing the pendulum’s motion and implement classical numerical algorithms, including first-order methods like Euler and Euler Backward, second-order methods such as Runge-Kutta and Adams-Bashforth, and third-and fourth-order methods like Adams-Moulton, Trapezium, and Runge-Kutta. To evaluate the performance of these numerical algorithms, we will compare their results with the solutions obtained using the ODE45 solver from the MATLAB software, known for solving ordinary differential equations. The objective is to identify the most efficient algorithm for accurately solving this mathematical model.

Abstract:In this paper the movement of a pendulum is analyzed considering the mass of the string from which the pendulum hangs, the analysis is carried out by perturbations considering that the mass of the string is much less than the mass of the pendulum. The results show that the mass of the string has two effects on the motion of the pendulum, the first is the increase in the inertia of the system and modification of the center of mass of the system, which translates into an increase in the frequency of the pendulum and the second effect is produced by the vibrations of the string itself, modifying the movement of the pendulum.

Abstract:A conical pendulum has slightly different frequencies of vibration when it rotates clockwise or anticlockwise in a laboratory on a rotating Earth. This splitting of the frequency is due to the presence of the Lorentzlike Coriolis force which presses either radially inward or outward on the pendulum bob depending on the sense with which it traverses its circular orbit. The precession of the plane of a Foucault pendulum may be viewed as a beat phenomenon in the planar superposition of the clockwise and anticlockwise circular motions of the conical pendulum.
On the elastodynamics of rotating planets

Abstract:Equations of motion are derived for (visco)elastic, self-gravitating, and variably-rotating planets. The equations are written using a decomposition of the elastic motion that separates the body's elastic deformation from its net translational and rotational motion as far as possible. This separation is achieved by introducing degrees of freedom that represent the body's rigid motions; it is made precise by imposing constraints that are physically motivated and should be practically useful. In essence, a Tisserand frame is introduced exactly into the equations of solid mechanics. The necessary concepts are first introduced in the context of a solid body, motivated by symmetries and conservation laws, and the corresponding equations of motion are derived. Next, it is shown how those ideas and equations of motion can readily be extended to describe a layered fluid--solid body. A possibly new conservation law concerning inviscid fluids is then stated. Thereafter the equilibria and linearisation of the fluid--solid equations of motion are discussed, along with new equations for use within normal-mode coupling calculations and other Galerkin methods. Finally, the extension of these ideas to the description of multiple, interacting fluid--solid planets is qualitatively discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the dynamic behavior of a viscoelastic string oscillating above a rigid obstacle in a one-dimensional setting, accounting for inelastic contact between the string and the obstacle. We construct a global-in-time weak solution to this problem by using an approximation method that incorporates a penalizing repulsive force of the form $\frac1\varepsilon\chi_{\{\eta<0\}} (\partial_t\eta)^-$. The weak solution exhibits well-controlled energy dissipation, occurring only during contact on a set of zero measure and exclusively when the string moves downward. Furthermore, the velocity is shown to vanish after contact in a specific weak sense. This model serves as a simplified framework for studying contact problems in fluid-structure interaction contexts.

Abstract:The wave equation $u_{tt} = c^2 u_{xx}$ is generally regarded as a linear approximation to the equation describing the amplitude of a transversely vibrating elastic string in the plane. But, as is shown in \cite{BC96}, the assumption of transverse vibration in fact implies that the wave equation describes the vibration precisely, with no need for approximation. We give a simplified proof of this result, and we generalize to the case of an elastic string vibrating (transversely or not) in a Riemannian surface $M$. In the more general setting, the assumption of transverse vibration is replaced by the assumption of "perfect elasticity," and we show that the wave map equation $\nabla_{\bu_t} \bu_t = c^2 \nabla_{\bu_x} \bu_x$ gives a precise description of the vibration of a perfectly elastic string in $M$, with no need for approximation. Finally, we give examples describing the motion of various vibrating strings in $\R^2$, $S^2$, and $\mathbb{H}^2$.

Abstract:Diniz, Eduardo Moraes ; The Foucault pendulum is a physical apparatus that shows the Earth's rotation through the variation of the plane of oscillation over time. The main physical agent responsible for this phenomenon is the non-inertial Coriolis force, which couples the coordinates in the equation of motion. Although the Foucault pendulum is more than 170 years old, its theoretical description still lacks completeness, as there is no exact vector solution to the problem or even a decoupled equation of motion. Furthermore, the main prediction about the Foucault pendulum, the dependence of the pendulum's plane of oscillation rotation on the latitude, needs to be revised as such dependence is more complex than is shown in the literature, once it depends essentially on the initial conditions. Here all these points raised are successfully answered.
