Abstract:We consider elastic bodies in rigid rotation, both nonrelativistically and in special relativity. Assuming a body to be in its natural state in the absence of rotation, we prove the existence of solutions to the elastic field equations for small angular velocity.

Abstract:We prove that, given a stress-free, axially symmetric elastic body, there exists, for sufficiently small values of the gravitational constant and of the angular frequency, a unique stationary axisymmetric solution to the Einstein equations coupled to the equations of relativistic elasticity with the body performing rigid rotations around the symmetry axis at the given angular frequency.

Abstract:The starting point of this manuscript is classical rigid body rotation. As it is well known, it contradicts basis of relativity since infinite speed is reached at infinite distance from the rotation center O. In order to fix this problem, a phenomenological circle-based construction using Euclidian trigonometry is first described: the relativistic rigid body rotation. The physical Eulerian acceleration implied by this geometrical construction then sketches future links with Maxwell's equation and Lense-Thirring effect. More importantly, relativistic rigid body rotation is shown to be compatible with Lorentz transformation and brings new geometrical interpretations of time and space intervals.

Abstract:This paper is based on a series of talks given at the ESI program on 'Mathematical Perspectives of Gravitation Beyond the Vacuum Regime' in February 2022. It is meant to be an introduction to the field of relativistic elasticity for readers with a good base in the mathematics of General Relativity with no necessary previous of knowledge of elasticity either in the classical or relativistic domain. Despite its introductory purpose, the present work has new material, in particular related to the formal structure of the theory.

Abstract:We derive the equations of motion for relativistic elastic membranes, that is, two-dimensional elastic bodies whose internal energy depends only on their stretching, starting from a variational principle. We show how to obtain conserved quantities for the membrane's motion in the presence of spacetime symmetries, determine the membrane's longitudinal and transverse speeds of sound in isotropic states, and compute the coefficients of linear elasticity with respect to the relaxed configuration. We then use this formalism to discuss two physically interesting systems: a rigidly rotating elastic disk, widely discussed in the context of Ehrenfest's paradox, and a Dyson sphere, that is, a spherical membrane in equilibrium in Schwarzschild's spacetime, with the isotropic tangential pressure balancing the gravitational attraction. Surprisingly, although spherically symmetric perturbations of this system are linearly stable, the axi-symmetric dipolar mode is already unstable. This may be taken as a cautionary tale against misconstruing radial stability as true stability.

Abstract:It is well known that the equations governing the motion of a freely-rotating rigid body possess an exact analytical solution, involving Jacobi's elliptic functions. Andoyer (1923) and Deprit (1967) have shown that the problem may be very usefully reduced to a one-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian system. When two of the body's principal moments of inertia are very nearly equal, the Hamiltonian system has the same form as the Ideal Resonance Problem. In earlier publications (Jupp, 1969, 1972, 1973), the author has constructed formal power-series solutions of the latter problem.In this article, the general solution of the Ideal Resonance Problem is employed to formulate a second-order formal series solution of the problem of a freely-rotating rigid body which has two of its principal moments of inertia differing by a small quantity. This solution is firstly expressed in terms of the mean elements, and then in terms of the initial conditions. The latter solution is global in nature being applicable over the whole phase plane. It is demonstrated that the exact solution and the second-order formal series solution, written in terms of the initial conditions, differ by terms of at most third order in the small parameter, over the whole domain of possible motions. This serves as an important check on the general results published in the earlier articles.

Abstract:We present a numerical framework for modeling extended hyperelastic bodies based on a Lagrangian formulation of general relativistic elasticity theory. We use finite element methods to discretize the body, then use the semi--discrete action to derive ordinary differential equations of motion for the discrete nodes. The nodes are evolved in time using fourth--order Runge--Kutta. We validate our code against the normal modes of oscillation of a hyperelastic sphere, which are known analytically in the limit of small (linear), slow (Newtonian) oscillations. The algorithm displays second order convergence. This numerical framework can be used to obtain the orbital motion and internal dynamics of a hyperelastic body of any shape, for any spacetime metric, and for varying hyperelastic energy models.

Abstract:We argue that in the general relativistic calculation of planetary orbits, the choice of a reference frame which is an obligatory condition in the Newtonian approach is replaced by an appropriate boundary condition on the solution of Einstein equation. Implications of this observation on the nature of rotation and the physical interpretation of the metric tensor are discussed.

Abstract:Relativistic modelling of rotational motion of extended bodies represents one of the most complicated problems of Applied Relativity. The relativistic reference systems of IAU (2000) give a suitable theoretical framework for such a modelling. Recent developments in the post-Newtonian theory of Earth rotation in the limit of rigidly rotating multipoles are reported below. All components of the theory are summarized and the results are demonstrated. The experience with the relativistic Earth rotation theory can be directly applied to model the rotational motion of other celestial bodies. The high-precision theories of rotation of the Moon, Mars and Mercury can be expected to be of interest in the near future.

Abstract:We present a new approach to the theory of static deformations of elastic test bodies in general relativity based on a generalization of the concept of frame of reference which we identify with the concept of quo-harmonic congruence. We argue on the basis of this new approach that weak gravitational plane waves do not couple to elastic bodies and therefore the latter, whatever their shape, are not suitable antennas to detect them.

Abstract:Applying the Damour-Soffel-Xu framework of general-relativistic celestial mechanics, the theory of relativistic rigid body presented by Thorne and Gursel is extended and developed in this paper. We successfully construct a quasi-rigid body model in the full post-Newtonian framework for the first time. This model has some simple properties in a similar way to the Newtonian rigid body, and it could be applied in geodynamics and astronomy, for example, to solve problems on rotation or precession of celestial bodies when relativistic effects are not negligible.

Abstract:The existence of static, self-gravitating elastic bodies in the non-linear theory of elasticity is established. Equilibrium configurations of self-gravitating elastic bodies close to the reference configuration have been constructed in Beig and Schmidt (Proc R Soc Lond, 109–115, 2003) using the implicit function theorem. In contrast, the steady states considered in this article correspond to deformations of the relaxed state with no size restriction and are obtained as minimizers of the energy functional of the elastic body.

Abstract:It is the aim of the paper to present a new point of view on rotational elasticity in a nonlinear setting using orthogonal matrices. The proposed model, in the linear approximation, can be compared to the well known equilibrium equations of static linear elasticity. An appropriate kinetic energy is identified and we present a dynamical model of rotational elasticity. The propagation of elastic waves in such a medium is studied and we find two classes of waves, transversal rotational waves and longitudinal rotational waves, both of which are solutions of the nonlinear partial differential equations. For certain parameter choices, the transversal wave velocity can be greater than the longitudinal wave velocity. Moreover, parameter ranges are identified where the model describes an auxetic material. However, in all cases the potential energy functional is positive definite. Finally, we couple the rotational waves to linear elastic waves to study the behaviour of the coupled system. We find wave like solutions to the coupled equations and can visualise our results with the help of suitable figures.

On the elastodynamics of rotating planets

Abstract:Equations of motion are derived for (visco)elastic, self-gravitating, and variably-rotating planets. The equations are written using a decomposition of the elastic motion that separates the body's elastic deformation from its net translational and rotational motion as far as possible. This separation is achieved by introducing degrees of freedom that represent the body's rigid motions; it is made precise by imposing constraints that are physically motivated and should be practically useful. In essence, a Tisserand frame is introduced exactly into the equations of solid mechanics. The necessary concepts are first introduced in the context of a solid body, motivated by symmetries and conservation laws, and the corresponding equations of motion are derived. Next, it is shown how those ideas and equations of motion can readily be extended to describe a layered fluid--solid body. A possibly new conservation law concerning inviscid fluids is then stated. Thereafter the equilibria and linearisation of the fluid--solid equations of motion are discussed, along with new equations for use within normal-mode coupling calculations and other Galerkin methods. Finally, the extension of these ideas to the description of multiple, interacting fluid--solid planets is qualitatively discussed.

Abstract:Geometric algebra is used in an essential way to provide a coordinate-free approach to Euclidean geometry and rigid body mechanics that fully integrates rotational and translational dynamics. Euclidean points are given a homogeneous representation that avoids designating one of them as an origin of coordinates and enables direct computation of geometric relations. Finite displacements of rigid bodies are associated naturally with screw displacements generated by bivectors and represented by twistors that combine multiplicatively. Classical screw theory is incorporated in an invariant formulation that is less ambiguous, easier to interpret geometrically, and manifestly more efficient in symbolic computation. The potential energy of an arbitrary elastic coupling is given an invariant form that promises significant simplifications in practical applications.

Abstract:The purpose of this review it to present a renewed perspective of the problem of self-gravitating elastic bodies under spherical symmetry. It is also a companion to the papers [Phys. Rev. D105, 044025 (2022)], [Phys. Rev. D106, L041502 (2022)], and [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2306.16584" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.16584">arXiv:2306.16584</a> [gr-qc]], where we introduced a new definition of spherically symmetric elastic bodies in general relativity, and applied it to investigate the existence and physical viability, including radial stability, of static self-gravitating elastic balls. We focus on elastic materials that generalize fluids with polytropic, linear, and affine equations of state, and discuss the symmetries of the energy density function, including homogeneity and the resulting scale invariance of the TOV equations. By introducing invariant characterizations of physical admissible initial data, we numerically construct mass-radius-compactness diagrams, and conjecture about the maximum compactness of stable physically admissible elastic balls.

Abstract:The fundamental equation describing the rotational dynamics of a rigid body is ${\vec \tau}=d{\vec L} / dt$ which is a straightforward consequence of the Newton's second law of motion and is only valid in an inertial coordinate system. While this equation is written down by an inertial observer, for practical purposes, it is worked out within a non-inertial ancillary coordinate system which is typically fixed in the rigid body. This results in the famous Euler equation for rotation of the rigid bodies. We show that it is also possible to describe the rotational dynamics of a rigid body from the point of view of a non-inertial observer (rotating with the ancillary coordinate system fixed in the rigid body), provided that the non-inertial torques are taken into account. We explicitly calculate the non-inertial torques and express them in terms of physical characteristics of the rigid body. We show that the resulting dynamical equations exactly recover the Euler equation.
