Abstract:We prove that, given a stress-free, axially symmetric elastic body, there exists, for sufficiently small values of the gravitational constant and of the angular frequency, a unique stationary axisymmetric solution to the Einstein equations coupled to the equations of relativistic elasticity with the body performing rigid rotations around the symmetry axis at the given angular frequency.

Abstract:Newton's equations of celestial mechanics are shown to possess a continuum of solutions in which the future trajectories of the N bodies are a perfect reflection of their past. These solutions evolve from zero initial velocities of the N bodies. Consequently, the future gravitational forces acting on the N bodies are also a perfect reflection of their past. The proof is carried out via Taylor series expansions. A perturbed system of equations of the N body problem is also considered. All real valued solutions of this perturbed system have no singularities on the real line. The perturbed system is shown to have a continuum of solutions that possess symmetry where the future velocities of the N bodies are a perfect reflection of their past. The positions and accelerations of the N bodies are then odd functions of the time. All N bodies then evolve from one location in space.

Abstract:The existence of static, self-gravitating elastic bodies in the non-linear theory of elasticity is established. Equilibrium configurations of self-gravitating elastic bodies close to the reference configuration have been constructed in Beig and Schmidt (Proc R Soc Lond, 109–115, 2003) using the implicit function theorem. In contrast, the steady states considered in this article correspond to deformations of the relaxed state with no size restriction and are obtained as minimizers of the energy functional of the elastic body.

Abstract:This manuscript considers the main features of the nonlinear dynamics of multiple irregular celestial body systems. The gravitational potential, static electric potential, and magnetic potential are considered. Based on the three established potentials, we show that three conservative values exist for this system, including a Jacobi integral. The equilibrium conditions for the system are derived and their stability analyzed. The equilibrium conditions of a celestial system comprised of n irregular bodies are reduced to 12n minus 9 equations. The dynamical results are applied to simulate the motion of multiple-asteroid systems. The simulation is useful for the study of the stability of multiple irregular celestial body systems and for the design of spacecraft orbits to triple asteroid systems discovered in the solar system. The dynamical configurations of the five triple-asteroid systems 45 Eugenia, 87 Sylvia, 93 Minerva, 216 Kleopatra, and 136617 1994CC, and the six-body system 134340 Pluto are calculated and analyzed.

Abstract:Certain measurements in celestial mechanics necessitate having the origin O of a Cartesian coordinate system (CCS) coincide with a point mass. For the two and three body problems we show mathematical inadequacies in Newton's celestial mechanics equations (NCME) when the origin of a coordinate system coincides with a point mass. A certain system of equations of relative differences implied by NCME is free of these inadequacies and is invariant with respect to any CCS translation. A new constant of motion is derived for the relative system. It shows that the universe of relative differences of the $N$-body problem is ``restless''.

Abstract:Applying the Damour-Soffel-Xu framework of general-relativistic celestial mechanics, the theory of relativistic rigid body presented by Thorne and Gursel is extended and developed in this paper. We successfully construct a quasi-rigid body model in the full post-Newtonian framework for the first time. This model has some simple properties in a similar way to the Newtonian rigid body, and it could be applied in geodynamics and astronomy, for example, to solve problems on rotation or precession of celestial bodies when relativistic effects are not negligible.

Abstract:Minimum energy configurations in celestial mechanics are investigated. It is shown that this is not a well defined problem for point-mass celestial mechanics but well-posed for finite density distributions. This naturally leads to a granular mechanics extension of usual celestial mechanics questions such as relative equilibria and stability. This paper specifically studies and finds all relative equilibria and minimum energy configurations for $N=1,2,3$ and develops hypotheses on the relative equilibria and minimum energy configurations for $N\gg 1$ bodies.

Abstract:The purpose of this review it to present a renewed perspective of the problem of self-gravitating elastic bodies under spherical symmetry. It is also a companion to the papers [Phys. Rev. D105, 044025 (2022)], [Phys. Rev. D106, L041502 (2022)], and [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2306.16584" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.16584">arXiv:2306.16584</a> [gr-qc]], where we introduced a new definition of spherically symmetric elastic bodies in general relativity, and applied it to investigate the existence and physical viability, including radial stability, of static self-gravitating elastic balls. We focus on elastic materials that generalize fluids with polytropic, linear, and affine equations of state, and discuss the symmetries of the energy density function, including homogeneity and the resulting scale invariance of the TOV equations. By introducing invariant characterizations of physical admissible initial data, we numerically construct mass-radius-compactness diagrams, and conjecture about the maximum compactness of stable physically admissible elastic balls.

Abstract:Relativistic modelling of rotational motion of extended bodies represents one of the most complicated problems of Applied Relativity. The relativistic reference systems of IAU (2000) give a suitable theoretical framework for such a modelling. Recent developments in the post-Newtonian theory of Earth rotation in the limit of rigidly rotating multipoles are reported below. All components of the theory are summarized and the results are demonstrated. The experience with the relativistic Earth rotation theory can be directly applied to model the rotational motion of other celestial bodies. The high-precision theories of rotation of the Moon, Mars and Mercury can be expected to be of interest in the near future.

Extended body dynamics in general relativity: hyperelastic models

Abstract:We present a numerical framework for modeling extended hyperelastic bodies based on a Lagrangian formulation of general relativistic elasticity theory. We use finite element methods to discretize the body, then use the semi--discrete action to derive ordinary differential equations of motion for the discrete nodes. The nodes are evolved in time using fourth--order Runge--Kutta. We validate our code against the normal modes of oscillation of a hyperelastic sphere, which are known analytically in the limit of small (linear), slow (Newtonian) oscillations. The algorithm displays second order convergence. This numerical framework can be used to obtain the orbital motion and internal dynamics of a hyperelastic body of any shape, for any spacetime metric, and for varying hyperelastic energy models.

Abstract:We consider the two- and n-body problems on the two-dimensional conformal sphere MR2, with a radius R>0. We employ an alternative potential free of singularities at antipodal points. We study the limit of relative equilibria under the SO(2) symmetry; we examine the specific conditions under which a pair of positive-mass particles, situated at antipodal points, can maintain a state of relative equilibrium as they traverse along a geodesic. It is identified that, under an appropriate radius–mass relationship, these particles experience an unrestricted and free movement in alignment with the geodesic of the canonical Killing vector field in MR2. An even number of bodies with pairwise conjugated positions, arranged in a regular n-gon, all with the same mass m, move freely on a geodesic with suitable velocities, where this geodesic motion behaves like a relative equilibrium. Also, a center of mass formula is included. A relation is found for the relative equilibrium in the two-body problem in the sphere similar to the Snell law.

Abstract:The motion of a point mass in the J2 problem has been generalized to that of a rigid body in a J2 gravity field for new high-precision applications in the celestial mechanics and astrodynamics. Unlike the original J2 problem, the gravitational orbit-rotation coupling of the rigid body is considered in the generalized problem. The existence and properties of both the classical and non-classical relative equilibria of the rigid body are investigated in more details in the present paper based on our previous results. We nondimensionalize the system by the characteristic time and length to make the study more general. Through the study, it is found that the classical relative equilibria can always exist in the real physical situation. Numerical results suggest that the non-classical relative equilibria only can exist in the case of a negative J2, i.e., the central body is elongated; they cannot exist in the case of a positive J2 when the central body is oblate. In the case of a negative J2, the effect of the orbit-rotation coupling of the rigid body on the existence of the non-classical relative equilibria can be positive or negative, which depends on the values of J2 and the angular velocity Ωe. The bifurcation from the classical relative equilibria, at which the non-classical relative equilibria appear, has been shown with different parameters of the system. Our results here have given more details of the relative equilibria than our previous paper, in which the existence conditions of the relative equilibria are derived and primarily studied. Our results have also extended the previous results on the relative equilibria of a rigid body in a central gravity field by taking into account the oblateness of the central body.

Oscillatory motions, parabolic orbits and collision orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem

Abstract:In this paper we consider the planar circular restricted three body problem (PCRTBP), which models the motion of a massless body under the attraction of other two bodies, the primaries, which describe circular orbits around their common center of mass. In a suitable system of coordinates, this is a two degrees of freedom Hamiltonian system. The orbits of this system are either defined for all (future or past) time or eventually go to collision with one of the primaries. For orbits defined for all time, Chazy provided a classification of all possible asymptotic behaviors, usually called final motions. By considering a sufficiently small mass ratio between the primaries, we analyze the interplay between collision orbits and various final motions and construct several types of dynamics. In particular, we show that orbits corresponding to any combination of past and future final motions can be created to pass arbitrarily close to the massive primary. Additionally, we construct arbitrarily large ejection-collision orbits (orbits which experience collision in both past and future times) and periodic orbits that are arbitrarily large and get arbitrarily close to the massive primary. Furthermore, we also establish oscillatory motions in both position and velocity, meaning that as time tends to infinity, the superior limit of the position or velocity is infinity while the inferior limit remains a real number.

Relativistic elastic membranes: rotating disks and Dyson spheres

Abstract:We derive the equations of motion for relativistic elastic membranes, that is, two-dimensional elastic bodies whose internal energy depends only on their stretching, starting from a variational principle. We show how to obtain conserved quantities for the membrane's motion in the presence of spacetime symmetries, determine the membrane's longitudinal and transverse speeds of sound in isotropic states, and compute the coefficients of linear elasticity with respect to the relaxed configuration. We then use this formalism to discuss two physically interesting systems: a rigidly rotating elastic disk, widely discussed in the context of Ehrenfest's paradox, and a Dyson sphere, that is, a spherical membrane in equilibrium in Schwarzschild's spacetime, with the isotropic tangential pressure balancing the gravitational attraction. Surprisingly, although spherically symmetric perturbations of this system are linearly stable, the axi-symmetric dipolar mode is already unstable. This may be taken as a cautionary tale against misconstruing radial stability as true stability.

Abstract:We present a new approach to the theory of static deformations of elastic test bodies in general relativity based on a generalization of the concept of frame of reference which we identify with the concept of quo-harmonic congruence. We argue on the basis of this new approach that weak gravitational plane waves do not couple to elastic bodies and therefore the latter, whatever their shape, are not suitable antennas to detect them.
Relative Equilibria of Dumbbells Orbiting in a Planar Newtonian Gravitational System

Abstract:In the cosmos, any two bodies share a gravitational attraction. When in proximity to one another in empty space, their motions can be modeled by Newtonian gravity. Newton found their orbits when the two bodies are infinitely small, the so-called two-body problem. The general situation in which the bodies have varying shapes and sizes, called the full two-body problem, remains open. We find relative equilibria (RE) and their stability for an approximation of the full two-body problem, where each body is restricted to a plane and consists of two point masses connected by a massless rod, a dumbbell. In particular, we find symmetric RE in which the bodies are arranged colinearly, perpendicularly, or trapezoidally. When the masses of the dumbbells are pairwise equal, we find asymmetric RE bifurcating from the symmetric RE. And while we find that only the colinear RE have nonlinear/energetic stability (for sufficiently large radii), we also find that the perpendicular and trapezoid configurations have radial intervals of linear stability. We also provide a geometric restriction on the location of RE for a dumbbell body and any number of planar rigid bodies in planar orbit (an extension of the Conley Perpendicular Bisector Theorem).

Abstract:The motion of a point mass in the J2 problem is generalized to that of a rigid body in a J2 gravity field. Different with the original J2 problem, the gravitational orbit-rotation coupling of the rigid body is considered in this generalized problem. The linear stability of the classical type of relative equilibria of the rigid body, which have been obtained in our previous paper, is studied in the framework of geometric mechanics with the second-order gravitational potential. Non-canonical Hamiltonian structure of the problem, i.e., Poisson tensor, Casimir functions and equations of motion, are obtained through a Poisson reduction process by means of the symmetry of the problem. The linear system matrix at the relative equilibria is given through the multiplication of the Poisson tensor and Hessian matrix of the variational Lagrangian. Based on the characteristic equation of the linear system matrix, the conditions of linear stability of the relative equilibria are obtained. With the stability conditions obtained, the linear stability of the relative equilibria is investigated in details in a wide range of the parameters of the gravity field and the rigid body. We find that both the zonal harmonic J2 and the characteristic dimension of the rigid body have significant effects on the linear stability. Similar to the attitude stability in a central gravity field, the linear stability region is also consisted of two regions that are analogues of the Lagrange region and the DeBra-Delp region. Our results are very useful for the studies on the motion of natural satellites in our solar system.
