Abstract:In this paper, we study some properties of the closure operator in the Macías topology on infinite integral domains. Moreover, under certain conditions, we present topological proofs of the infiniteness of maximal ideals and non-associated irreducible elements, taking advantage of the hyperconnectedness of the Macías topology. Additionally, some problems are proposed.

Abstract:This paper introduces the study of the infinity in the class of Alexandroff spaces by establishing the proper category of locally finite Alexandroff spaces. We observe that the McCord and Clader theorems are available in this setting. The paper can be considered as the starting point of a seemingly new research: relating the combinatorics and topology of the proper category of Alexandroff spaces to the proper invariants used in the geometric topology of non-compact polyhedra and manifolds.

Abstract:We discuss different regularities on stable/unstable holonomies of cw-hyperbolic homeomorphisms and prove that if a cw-hyperbolic homeomorphism has continuous joint stable/unstable holonomies, then it has a dense set of periodic points in its non-wandering set. For that, we prove that the hyperbolic cw-metric (introduced in [9]) can be adapted to be self-similar (as in [6]) and, in this case, continuous joint stable/unstable holonomies are pseudo-isometric. We also prove transitivity of cw-hyperbolic homeomorphisms assuming that the stable/unstable holonomies are isometric. In the case the ambient space is a surface, we prove that a cw$_F$-hyperbolic homeomorphism has continuous joint stable/unstable holonomies when every bi-asymptotic sector is regular.

Homeomorphism groups of self-similar 2-manifolds

Abstract:The class of self-similar 2-manifolds consists of manifolds exhibiting a type of homogeneity akin to the 2-sphere and the Cantor set, and includes both the 2-sphere and the 2-sphere with a Cantor set removed. This chapter aims to provide a narrative thread between recent results on the structure of homeomorphism groups/mapping class groups of self-similar 2-manifolds, and also connections to classical structural results on the homeomorphism group of the 2-sphere and the Cantor set. In order to do this, we provide a survey of recent results, an exposition on classical results about homeomorphism groups, provide a treatment of the structure of stable sets, and prove extensions/strengthenings of the recent results surveyed. Of particular note, we establish the following theorems: (1) A characterization of homeomorphisms of (orientable) perfectly self-similar 2-manifolds that normally generate the group of (orientation-preserving) homeomorphisms -- a strengthening of a result of Malestein-Tao. (2) The homeomorphism group of a perfectly self-similar 2-manifold is strongly distorted -- an extension of a result of Calegari-Freedman for spheres. (3) The homeomorphism group of a perfectly tame 2-manifold is Steinhaus, and hence has the automatic continuity property -- an extension of a result of Mann in dimension two -- providing the first examples of homeomorphism groups of infinite-genus 2-manifolds with the Steinhaus property.

On the automorphism groups of hyperbolic manifolds

Abstract:Let Diff(N) and Homeo(N) denote the smooth and topological group of automorphisms respectively that fix the boundary of the n-manifold N, pointwise. We show that the (n-4)-th homotopy group of Homeo(S^1 \times D^{n-1}) is not finitely-generated for n >= 4 and in particular the topological mapping-class group of S^1\times D^3 is infinitely generated. We apply this to show that the smooth and topological automorphism groups of finite-volume hyperbolic n-manifolds (when n >= 4) do not have the homotopy-type of finite CW-complexes, results previously known for n >= 11 by Farrell and Jones. In particular, we show that if N is a closed hyperbolic n-manifold, and if Diff_0(N) represents the subgroup of diffeomorphisms that are homotopic to the identity, then the (n-4)-th homotopy group of Diff_0(N) is infinitely generated and hence if n=4, then \pi_0\Diff_0(N) is infinitely generated with similar results holding topologically.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.

Abstract:In this manuscript a recent topology on the positive integers generated by the collection of $\{\sigma_n:n\in\mathbb{N}\}$ where $\sigma_n:=\{m: \gcd(n,m)=1\}$ is generalized over integral domains. Some of its topological properties are studied. Properties of this topology on infinite principal ideal domains that are not fields are also explored, and a new topological proof of the infinitude of prime elements is obtained (assuming the set of units is finite or not open), different from those presented in the style of H. Furstenberg. Finally, some problems are proposed.

Finite state automata and homeomorphism of self-similar sets

Abstract: The topological and metrical equivalence of fractals is an important topic in analysis. In this paper, we use a class of finite state automata, called $\Sigma$-automaton, to construct psuedo-metric spaces, and then apply them to the study of classification of self-similar sets. We first introduce a notion of topology automaton of a fractal gasket, which is a simplified version of neighbor automaton; we show that a fractal gasket is homeomorphic to the psuedo-metric space induced by the topology automaton. Then we construct a universal map to show that psuedo-metric spaces induced by different automata can be bi-Lipschitz equivalent. As an application, we obtain a rather general sufficient condition for two fractal gaskets to be homeomorphic or Lipschitz equivalent.

Abstract:Given a self-map of a compact metric space $X$, we study periodic points of the map induced on the hyperspace of closed subsets of $X$. We give some necessary conditions on admissible sets of periods for these maps. Seemingly unrelated to this, we construct an almost totally minimal homeomorphism of the Cantor set. We also apply our theory to give a full description of admissible period sets for induced maps of the interval maps. The description of admissible periods is also given for maps induced on symmetric products.

Fully chaotic conservative models for some torus homeomorphisms

Abstract:We study homotopic-to-the-identity torus homeomorphisms, whose rotation set has nonempty interior. We prove that any such map is monotonically semiconjugate to a homeomorphism that preserves the Lebesgue measure, and that has the same rotation set. Furthermore, the dynamics of the quotient map has several interesting chaotic traits: for instance, it is topologically mixing, has a dense set of periodic points and is continuum-wise expansive. In particular, this shows that a convex compact set of $\mathbb{R}^2$ with nonempty interior is the rotation set of the lift of a homeomorphism of $\mathbb{T}^2$ if and only if it is the rotation set of the lift of a conservative homeomorphism.

Abstract:We develop a class of homeomorphisms on a compact homogeneous space of a transitive group action and show how the class sheds new light on a decomposition problem. We further use this class to show that every such homogeneous space in a locally convex topological vector space which is also convex must necessarily be trivial, ie. a singleton set. Additionally, this class of homeomorphisms allows us to relate the induced group action on the space of continuous functions to the action on the homogeneous space.

Abstract:This paper deals with classifying the dynamics of {\it Topologically Anosov} plane homeomorphisms. We prove that a Topologically Anosov homeomorphism $f:\mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R}^2$ is conjugate to a homothety if it is the time one map of a flow. We also obtain results for the cases when the nonwandering set of $f$ reduces to a fixed point, or if there exists an open, connected, simply connected proper subset $U$ such that $U \subset \mathrm{Int}(\overline {f(U)})$, and such that $ \cup_{n\geq 0} f^n (U)= \mathbb{R}^2$. In the general case, we prove a structure theorem for the $\alpha$-limits of orbits with empty $\omega$-limit (or the $\omega$-limits of orbits with empty $\alpha$-limit), and we show that any basin of attraction (or repulsion) must be unbounded.

Abstract:We study geometrically finite one-dimensional mappings. These are a subspace of $C^{1+\alpha}$ one-dimensional mappings with finitely many, critically finite critical points. We study some geometric properties of a mapping in this subspace. We prove that this subspace is closed under quasisymmetrical conjugacy. We also prove that if two mappings in this subspace are topologically conjugate, they are then quasisymmetrically conjugate. We show some examples of geometrically finite one-dimensional mappings.

The Casson-Sullivan invariant for homeomorphisms of 4-manifolds

Abstract:We investigate the realisability of the Casson-Sullivan invariant for homeomorphisms of smooth $4$-manifolds, which is the obstruction to a homeomorphism being stably pseudo-isotopic to a diffeomorphism, valued in the third cohomology of the source manifold with $\mathbb{Z}/2$-coefficients. We prove that for all orientable pairs of homeomorphic, smooth $4$-manifolds this invariant can be realised fully after stabilising with a single $S^2\times S^2$. As an application, we obtain that topologically isotopic surfaces in a smooth, simply-connected $4$-manifold become smoothly isotopic after sufficient external stabilisations. We further demonstrate cases where this invariant can be realised fully without stabilisation for self-homeomorphisms, which includes for manifolds with finite cyclic fundamental group. This method allows us to produce many examples of homeomorphisms which are not stably pseudo-isotopic to any diffeomorphism but are homotopic to the identity. Finally, we reinterpret these results in terms of finding examples of smooth structures on $4$-manifolds which are diffeomorphic but not stably pseudo-isotopic.

Abstract:In the present paper, under certain assumptions, we establish the convergence of iterates for self-mappings of complete metric spaces with graphs which are of a contractive type. The class of mappings considered in the paper contains the so-called cyclical mappings introduced by W. A. Kirk, P. S. Srinivasan and P. Veeramani in 2003 and the class of monotone nonexpansive operators. Our results hold in the case of a symmetric graph.

Abstract:We prove the transitivity of real Anosov diffeomorphisms, which are Anosov diffeomorphisms where stable and unstable spaces decompose into a continuous sum of invariant one-dimensional sub-spaces with uniform contraction/expansion over the ambient manifold. We analyze how the stable/unstable holonomies of Anosov diffeomorphisms behave on Artigue's self-similar hyperbolic metric and prove that if a stable/unstable curve has a well-defined length in a self-similar hyperbolic metric, then it has a globally defined holonomy. We exhibit a self-similar hyperbolic metric with well-defined length of curves for each real Anosov diffeomorphism.

Abstract:We consider some class of homeomorphisms of domains of Euclidean space, which are more general than quasiconformal mappings. For these homeomorphisms, we have obtained theorems on local behavior of it's inverse mappings in a given domain.
