Abstract:We describe interrelations between a topology structure of closed manifolds (orientable and non-orientable) of the dimension $n\geq 4$ and the structure of the non-wandering set of regular homeomorphisms, in particular, Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms.

Abstract:In the present paper we consider class $G$ of orientation preserving Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms $f$, which defined on closed 3-manifold $M^3$, and whose non-wandering set consist of four fixed points with pairwise different Morse indices. It follows from S. Smale and K. Meyer results that all gradient-like flows with similar properties has Morse energy function with four critical points of pairwise different Morse indices. This implies, that supporting manifold $M^3$ for these flows admits a Heegaard decomposition of genus 1 and hence it is homeomorphic to a lens space $L_{p,q}$. Despite the simple structure of the non-wandering set in class $G$ there exist diffeomorphisms with wild embedded separatrices. According to V. Grines, F. Laudenbach, O. Pochinka results such diffeomorphisms do not possesses an energy function, and question about topology their supporting manifold is open. According to V. Grines, E. Zhuzhoma and V. Medvedev results $M^3$ is homeomorphic to a lens space $L_{p,q}$ in case of tame embedding of closures of one-dimensional separatrices of diffeomorphism $f\in G$. Moreover, the wandering set of $f$ contains at least $p$ non-compact heteroclinic curves. In the present paper similar result was received for arbitrary diffeomorphisms of class $G$. Also we construct diffeomorphisms from $G$ with wild embedding one-dimensional separatrices on every lens space $L_{p,q}$. Such examples were known previously only on the 3-sphere.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.

Abstract:For a non-compact n-manifold M let H(M) denote the group of homeomorphisms of M endowed with the Whitney topology and H_c(M) the subgroup of H(M) consisting of homeomorphisms with compact support. It is shown that the group H_c(M) is locally contractible and the identity component H_0(M) of H(M) is an open normal subgroup in H_c(M). This induces the topological factorization H_c(M) \approx H_0(M) \times \M_c(M) for the mapping class group \M_c(M) = H_c(M)/H_0(M) with the discrete topology. Furthermore, for any non-compact surface M, the pair (H(M), H_c(M)) is locally homeomorphic to (\square^w l_2,\cbox^w l_2) at the identity id_M of M. Thus the group H_c(M) is an (l_2 \times R^\infty)-manifold. We also study topological properties of the group D(M) of diffeomorphisms of a non-compact smooth n-manifold M endowed with the Whitney C^\infty-topology and the subgroup D_c(M) of D(M) consisting of all diffeomorphisms with compact support. It is shown that the pair (D(M),D_c(M)) is locally homeomorphic to (\square^w l_2, \cbox^w l_2) at the identity id_M of M. Hence the group D_c(M) is a topological (l_2 \times R^\infty)-manifold for any dimension n.

Abstract:Understanding the relationships between geometry and topology is a central theme in Riemannian geometry. We establish two results on the fundamental groups of open (complete and noncompact) $n$-manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and linear volume growth. First, we show that the fundamental group of such a manifold contains a subgroup $\mathbb{Z}^k$ of finite index, where $0\le k\le n-1$. Second, we prove that if the Ricci curvature is positive everywhere, then the fundamental group is finite. The proofs are based on an analysis of the equivariant asymptotic geometry of successive covering spaces and a plane/halfplane rigidity result for RCD spaces.

On the automorphism groups of hyperbolic manifolds

Abstract:Let Diff(N) and Homeo(N) denote the smooth and topological group of automorphisms respectively that fix the boundary of the n-manifold N, pointwise. We show that the (n-4)-th homotopy group of Homeo(S^1 \times D^{n-1}) is not finitely-generated for n >= 4 and in particular the topological mapping-class group of S^1\times D^3 is infinitely generated. We apply this to show that the smooth and topological automorphism groups of finite-volume hyperbolic n-manifolds (when n >= 4) do not have the homotopy-type of finite CW-complexes, results previously known for n >= 11 by Farrell and Jones. In particular, we show that if N is a closed hyperbolic n-manifold, and if Diff_0(N) represents the subgroup of diffeomorphisms that are homotopic to the identity, then the (n-4)-th homotopy group of Diff_0(N) is infinitely generated and hence if n=4, then \pi_0\Diff_0(N) is infinitely generated with similar results holding topologically.

Abstract:We study the global topology of the space $\mathcal L$ of loops of contactomorphisms of a non-orderable closed contact manifold $(M^{2n+1}, \alpha)$. We filter $\mathcal L$ by a quantitative measure of the ``positivity'' of the loops and describe the topology of $\mathcal L$ in terms of the subspaces of the filtration. In particular, we show that the homotopy groups of $\mathcal L$ are subgroups of the homotopy groups of the subspace of positive loops $\mathcal L^+$. We obtain analogous results for the space of loops of Legendrian submanifolds in $(M^{2n+1}, \alpha)$.

Abstract:For a smooth Morse-Smale vector field with Lyapunov constraints (Lyapunov function) one shows how and why the non-triviality of the cohomology, as concluded from its additive structure, detects rest points and the multiplicative structure of the cohomology detects instantons (trajectories between rest points). The same remains true for Lyapunov closed one form, a more general Lyapunov constraint, but in this presentation this fact is discussed only informally. These observations are based on the smooth " manifold with corner structures" of the stable/unstable sets and of the set of trajectories of such vector fields. (This paper is a written version of two talks with the same title given at IMAR Bucharest in November 2023.)

Abstract:Following Thurston's geometrisation picture in dimension three, we study geometric manifolds in a more general setting in arbitrary dimensions, with respect to the following problems: (i) The existence of maps of non-zero degree (domination relation or Gromov's order); (ii) The Gromov-Thurston monotonicity problem for numerical homotopy invariants with respect to the domination relation; (iii) The existence of Anosov diffeomorphisms (Anosov-Smale conjecture).

On elliptic and quasiregularly elliptic manifolds

Abstract:In his book "Metric structures for Riemannian and non-Riemannian spaces", Gromov defined two properties of Riemannian manifolds, ellipticity and quasiregular ellipticity, and suggested that there may be a connection between the two. Since then, groups of researchers working independently have proved strikingly similar results about these two concepts. We obtain new topological obstructions to the two properties: most notably, we show that closed manifolds of both types must have virtually abelian fundamental group. We also give the first examples of open manifolds which are elliptic but not quasireguarly elliptic and vice versa. Whether there is a direct connection between these properties -- and, in particular, whether they are equivalent for closed manifolds -- remains elusive.

Abstract:We construct a distance on the moduli space of symplectic toric manifolds of dimension four. Then we study some basic topological properties of this space, in particular, connectedness, compactness and completeness. The construction of the distance is related to the DuistermaatHeckman measure and the Hausdorff metric. While the moduli space, its topology and metric, may be constructed in any dimension, the tools we use in the proofs are four-dimensional, and hence so is our main result.

Abstract:The present paper is devoted to a study of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms on three-dimensional manifolds with a non-wandering set consisting of a finite number of surface attractors and repellers. The main results of the paper relate to a class of homeomorphisms for which the restriction of the map to a connected component of the non-wandering set is topologically conjugate to an orientation-preserving pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism. The ambient -conjugacy of a homeomorphism from the class with a locally direct product of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism and a rough transformation of the circle is proved. In addition, we prove that the centralizer of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms consists of only pseudo-Anosov and periodic maps.

Abstract:By a gradient-like flow on a closed orientable surface $M$, we mean a closed 1-form $\beta$ defined on $M$ punctured at a finite set of points (sources and sinks of $\beta$) such that there exists a Morse function $f$ on $M$, called an energy function of $\beta$, whose critical points coincide with equilibria of $\beta$, and the pair $(f,\beta)$ has a canonical form near each critical point of $f$. Let $\mathcal{B}=\mathcal{B}(\beta_0)$ be the space of all gradient-like flows on $M$ having the same types of local singularities as a flow $\beta_0$, and $\mathcal{F}=\mathcal{F}(f_0)$ the space of all Morse functions on $M$ having the same types of local singularities as an energy function $f_0$ of $\beta_0$. We prove that the spaces $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{B}$, equipped with $C^\infty$ topologies, are homotopy equivalent to some manifold $\mathcal{M}_s$, moreover their decompositions into $\mathrm{Diff}^0(M)$-orbits are given by two transversal fibrations on $\mathcal{M}_s$. Similar results are proved for topological equivalence classes on $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{B}$, and for non-Morse singularities.

On equivariantly formal 2-torus manifolds

Abstract:A 2-torus manifold is a closed connected smooth n-manifold with a non-free effective smooth $\mathbb{Z}^n_2$-action. In this paper, we prove that a 2-torus manifold is equivariantly formal if and only if the $\mathbb{Z}^n_2$-action is locally standard and every face of its orbit space (including the whole orbit space) is mod 2 acyclic. Our study is parallel to the study of torus manifolds with vanishing odd-degree cohomology by M. Masuda and T. Panov. As an application, we determine when such kind of 2-torus manifolds can have regular m-involutions (i.e. involutions with only isolated fixed points of the maximum possible number).

Abstract:The object of study in the present dissertation are some topics in differential geometry of smooth manifolds with additional tensor structures and metrics of Norden type. There are considered four cases depending on the dimension of the manifold: 2n, 2n + 1, 4n and 4n + 3. The studied tensor structures, which are counterparts in the different related dimensions, are the almost complex/contact/hypercomplex structure and the almost contact 3-structure. The considered metric on the 2n-dimensional case is the Norden metric, and the metrics in the other three cases are generated by it. The purpose of the dissertation is to carry out the following: 1. Further investigations of almost complex manifolds with Norden metric including studying of natural connections with conditions for their torsion and invariant tensors under the twin interchange of Norden metrics. 2. Further investigations of almost contact manifolds with B-metric including studying of natural connections with conditions for their torsion and associated Schouten-van Kampen connections as well as a classification of affine connections. 3. Introducing and studying of Sasaki-like almost contact complex Riemannian manifolds. 4. Further investigations of almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian-Norden metrics including studying of integrable structures of the considered type on 4-dimensional Lie algebra and tangent bundles with the complete lift of the base metric; introducing of associated Nijenhuis tensors in relation with natural connections having totally skew-symmetric torsion as well as quaternionic Kähler manifolds with Hermitian-Norden metrics. 5. Introducing and studying of manifolds with almost contact 3-structures and metrics of Hermitian-Norden type and, in particular, associated Nijenhuis tensors and their relationship with natural connections having totally skew-symmetric torsion.

On non-elliptic symplectic manifolds

Abstract:Let $M$ be a closed symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$ with non-ellipticity. We can define an almost Kähler structure on $M$ by using the given symplectic form. Hence, we have a $\G=\pi_1(M)$-invariant almost Kähler structure on the universal covering, $\ti M$, of $M$. Using Darboux coordinate charts, we globally deform the given almost Kähler structure on $\ti M$ off a Lebesgue measure zero subset to obtain a $\G$-invariant Lipschitz Kähler flat structure on $\ti M$ which is $\G$-homotopy equivalent to the given almost Kähler structure. Analogous to Teleman's $L^2$-Hodge decomposition on PL manifolds or Lipschitz Riemannian manifolds, we give a $L^2$-Hodge decomposition theorem on $\ti M$ with respect to the Lipschitz Kähler flat metric. Using an argument of Gromov, we give a vanishing theorem for $L^2$ harmonic $p$-forms, $p\not=n$ (resp. a non-vanishing theorem for $L^2$ harmonic $n$-forms) on $\ti M$, then the signed Euler characteristic satisfies $(-1)^n\chi(M)\geq0$ (resp. $(-1)^n\chi(M)>0$). Similarly, for any closed even dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$, we can construct a $\G$-invariant Lipschitz Kähler flat structure on the universal covering, $(\ti M, \ti g)$, of $(M, g)$ which is $\G$-homotopy equivalent to and quasi-isometric to the metric $\ti g$. As an application, using Gromov's method we show that the Chern-Hopf conjecture holds true in closed even dimensional Riemannian manifolds with nonpositive curvature (resp. strictly negative curvature), it gives a positive answer to a Yau's problem due to S. S. Chern and H. Hopf.

Topological regularity and stability of noncollapsed spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below

Abstract:We investigate the topological regularity and stability of noncollapsed Ricci limit spaces $(M_i^n,g_i,p_i)\to (X^n,d)$. We confirm a conjecture proposed by Colding and Naber in dimension $n=4$, showing that the cross-sections of tangent cones at a given point $x\in X^4$ are all homeomorphic to a fixed spherical space form $S^3/\Gamma_x$, and $\Gamma_x$ is trivial away from a $0$-dimensional set. In dimensions $n>4$, we show an analogous statement at points where all tangent cones are $(n-4)$-symmetric. Furthermore, we prove that $(n-3)$-symmetric noncollapsed Ricci limits are topological manifolds, thus confirming a particular case of a conjecture due to Cheeger, Colding, and Tian. Our analysis relies on two key results, whose importance goes beyond their applications in the study of cross-sections of noncollapsed Ricci limit spaces: (i) A new manifold recognition theorem for noncollapsed ${\rm RCD}(-2,3)$ spaces. (ii) A cone rigidity result ruling out noncollapsed Ricci limit spaces of the form $\mathbb{R}^{n-3}\times C(\mathbb{RP}^2)$.

Abstract:Given the interest in relating the large $N$ limit of SU(N) to groups of area-preserving diffeomorphisms, we consider the topologies of these groups and show that both in terms of homology and homotopy, they are extremely different. Similar conclusions are drawn for other infinite dimensional classical groups.
The Casson-Sullivan invariant for homeomorphisms of 4-manifolds

Abstract:We investigate the realisability of the Casson-Sullivan invariant for homeomorphisms of smooth $4$-manifolds, which is the obstruction to a homeomorphism being stably pseudo-isotopic to a diffeomorphism, valued in the third cohomology of the source manifold with $\mathbb{Z}/2$-coefficients. We prove that for all orientable pairs of homeomorphic, smooth $4$-manifolds this invariant can be realised fully after stabilising with a single $S^2\times S^2$. As an application, we obtain that topologically isotopic surfaces in a smooth, simply-connected $4$-manifold become smoothly isotopic after sufficient external stabilisations. We further demonstrate cases where this invariant can be realised fully without stabilisation for self-homeomorphisms, which includes for manifolds with finite cyclic fundamental group. This method allows us to produce many examples of homeomorphisms which are not stably pseudo-isotopic to any diffeomorphism but are homotopic to the identity. Finally, we reinterpret these results in terms of finding examples of smooth structures on $4$-manifolds which are diffeomorphic but not stably pseudo-isotopic.

Abstract:This paper gives the classifications of certain manifolds $\mathcal{M}$ of dimension $13$ up to diffeomorphism, homeomorphism, and homotopy equivalence, whose cohomology rings are isomorphic to $H^\ast(\mathrm{CP}^3\times S^7;\mathbb{Z})$. Moreover, we prove that either $\mathcal{M}$ or $\mathcal{M}\#\Sigma^{13}$ admits a metric of non-negative sectional curvature where $\Sigma^{13}$ is a certain exotic sphere of dimension 13.

From diffeomorphisms to exotic phenomena in small 4-manifolds

Abstract:We provide an approach to study exotic phenomena in relatively small 4-manifolds that captures many different exotic behaviors under one umbrella. These phenomena include exotic smooth structures on 4-manifolds with $b_2=1$, examples of strong corks, and exotic codimension-$1$ embeddings into $\mathbb{C} P^2 \# - \mathbb{C} P^2$ that survive external stabilization. We also give a new way to detect a homeomorphism of a 4-manifold that is not topologically isotopic to any diffeomorphism and give lower bounds of relative genera of certain knots. Our primary tools are constraints on diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds obtained from families Seiberg-Witten theory.
