Abstract:This article employs techniques from convex analysis to present characterizations of (maximal) $n-$monotonicity, similar to the well-established characterizations of (maximal) monotonicity found in the existing literature. These characterizations are further illustrated through examples.

Abstract:We give new characterizations for matrix monotonicity and convexity of fixed order which connects previous characterizations by Loewner, Dobsch, Donoghue, Kraus and Bendat--Sherman. The ideas introduced are then used to characterize matrix monotone functions of arbitrary order on general subsets of the real line.

Abstract:In search of a meaningful 2-dimensional analog to mono- tonicity, we introduce two new definitions and give examples of and dis- cuss the relationship between these definitions and others that we found in the literature. Note: After we published the article in Abstract and Applied Analysis and after we searched multiple times for previous work, we discovered that Clarke at al. had introduced the definition of cone monotonicity and given a characterization. The main results concern local boundedness of maximal e -monotone operators, maximal 2 e -monotonicity of the Clarke–Rockafellar subdifferential for an e -convex function f , and the characterization of e -monotonicity of an operator T via the behaviour of its e -Fitzpatrick function outside the graph of T .

Relationships between Global and Local Monotonicity of Operators

Abstract:The paper is devoted to establishing relationships between global and local monotonicity, as well as their maximality versions, for single-valued and set-valued mappings between finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional spaces. We first show that for single-valued operators with convex domains in locally convex topological spaces, their continuity ensures that their global monotonicity agrees with the local one around any point of the graph. This also holds for set-valued mappings defined on the real line under a certain connectedness condition. The situation is different for set-valued operators in multidimensional spaces as demonstrated by an example of locally monotone operator on the plane that is not globally monotone. Finally, we invoke coderivative criteria from variational analysis to characterize both global and local maximal monotonicity of set-valued operators in Hilbert spaces to verify the equivalence between these monotonicity properties under the closed-graph and global hypomonotonicity assumptions.

In this paper, point monotonicity of maps is proposed and its applications in numerical computation are presented. Especially, with the point monotonicity the global convergence of continuous Levenberg-Marquardt method is dissused and then monotonicity of maps is extended in a new way.

Abstract:Let $\varphi$ be a normal state on the algebra $B(H)$ of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space $H$, $f$ a strictly positive, continuous function on $(0, \infty)$, and let $g$ be a function on $(0, \infty)$ defined by $g(t) = \frac{t}{f(t)}$. We will give characterizations of matrix and operator monotonicity by the following generalized Powers-St\ormer inequality: $$ \varphi(A + B) - \varphi(|A - B|) \leq 2\varphi(f(A)^1/2g(B)f(A)^1/2), $$ whenever $A, B$ are positive invertible operators in $B(H).$

Abstract:The most important open problem in Monotone Operator Theory concerns the maximal monotonicity of the sum of two maximally monotone operators provided that Rockafellar's constraint qualification holds. In this paper, we prove the maximal monotonicity of $A+\partial f$ provided that $A$ is a maximally monotone linear relation, and $f$ is a proper lower semicontinuous convex function satisfying $\dom A\cap\inte\dom \partial f\neq\varnothing$. Moreover, $A+\partial f$ is of type (FPV). The maximal monotonicity of $A+\partial f$ when $\intdom A\cap\dom \partial f\neq\varnothing$ follows from a result by Verona and Verona, which the present work complements.

Abstract:We prove a strengthened form of convexity for operator monotone decreasing positive functions defined on the positive real numbers. This extends Ando and Hiai's work to allow arbitrary positive maps instead of states (or the identity map), and functional calculus by operator monotone functions defined on the positive real numbers instead of the logarithmic function.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, we propose three types of absolute continuity for monotone measures and present some of their basic properties. By means of these three types of absolute continuity, we establish generalized Egoroff's theorem, generalized Riesz's theorem and generalized Lebesgue's theorem in the framework involving the ordered pair of monotone measures. The Egoroff theorem, the Riesz theorem and the Lebesgue theorem in the traditional sense concerning a unique monotone measure are extended to the general case. These three generalized convergence theorems include as special cases several previous versions of Egoroff-like theorem, Riesz-like theorem and Lebesgue-like theorem for monotone measures, respectively.</p>

Abstract:Monotone maximization is a global optimization problem that maximizes an increasing function subject to increasing constraints. Due to the often existence of multiple local optimal solutions, finding a global optimal solution of such a problem is computationally difficult. In this survey paper, we summarize global solution methods for the monotone optimization problem. In particular, we propose a unified framework for the recent progress on convexification methods for the monotone optimization problem. Suggestions for further research are also presented.

Abstract:Given a subset $A\times B$ of a locally convex space $X\times Y$ (with $A$ compact) and a function $f:A\times B\rightarrow\overline{\mathbb{R}}$ such that $f(\cdot,y),$ $y\in B,$ are concave and upper semicontinuous, the minimax inequality $\max_{x\in A} \inf_{y\in B} f(x,y) \geq \inf_{y\in B} \sup_{x\in A_{0}} f(x,y)$ is shown to hold provided that $A_{0}$ be the set of $x\in A$ such that $f(x,\cdot)$ is proper, convex and lower semi-contiuous. Moreover, if in addition $A\times B\subset f^{-1}(\mathbb{R})$, then we can take as $A_{0}$ the set of $x\in A$ such that $f(x,\cdot)$ is convex. The relation to Moreau's biconjugate representation theorem is discussed, and some applications to\ convex duality are provided. Key words. Abstract:Several aspects of the interplay between monotone operator theory and convex optimization are presented. The crucial role played by monotone operators in the analysis and the numerical solution of convex minimization problems is emphasized. We review the properties of subdifferentials as maximally monotone operators and, in tandem, investigate those of proximity operators as resolvents. In particular, we study new transformations which map proximity operators to proximity operators, and establish connections with self-dual classes of firmly nonexpansive operators. In addition, new insights and developments are proposed on the algorithmic front.

Abstract:In this paper, we primarily deal with approximately monotone and convex sequences. We start by showing that any sequence can be expressed as the difference between two nondecreasing sequences. One of these two monotone sequences act as the majorant of the original sequence, while the other possesses non-negativity. Another result establishes that an approximately monotone(increasing) sequence can be closely approximated by a non-decreasing sequence. A similar assertion can be made for approximately convex sequence. A sequence $\big<u_n\big>_{n=0}^{\infty}$ is said to be approximately convex (or $\varepsilon$-convex) if the following inequality holds under the mentioned assumptions \begin{equation*} u_{i}- u_{i-1}\leq u_{j}-u_{j-1}+\varepsilon\quad\quad\mbox{ where}\quad\quad i,j\in\mathbb{N} \quad \mbox{with} \quad i<j. \end{equation*} We proved that an approximately convex sequence can be written as the algebraic difference of two specific types of sequences. The initial sequence contains sequential convexity property, while the other sequence possesses the Lipschitz property. Moreover, we introduce an operator $\mathbb{T}$, that termed as a twisting operator. In a compact interval $I(\subseteq\mathbb{R})$; we characterized the convex function with this newly introduced operator. Besides various sequence decomposition results and study related to $\mathbb{T}$-operator on convex function; a characterization regarding non-negative sequential convexity, a fractional inequality, implication of $\mathbb{T}$ operator on various types of functions, relationship between a convex function and a convex sequence are also included.
