Abstract:In this short expository note, we present a selection of classic and recent ideas in free boundary theory, with a focus on the vectorial case, referred to here as constraint maps. The note includes a brief historical perspective and highlights the latest heuristic-level results.

Abstract:Energy-minimizing constraint maps are a natural extension of the obstacle problem within a vectorial framework. Due to inherent topological constraints, these maps manifest a diverse structure that includes singularities similar to harmonic maps, branch points reminiscent of minimal surfaces, and the intricate free-boundary behavior of the obstacle problem. The complexity of these maps poses significant challenges to their analysis. In this paper, we first focus on constraint maps with uniformly convex obstacles and establish continuity (and therefore higher-order regularity) within a uniform neighborhood of the free boundary. More precisely, thanks to a new quantitative unique continuation principle near singularities (which is new even in the setting of classical harmonic maps), we prove that, in the uniformly convex setting, topological singularities can only lie in the interior of the contact set. We then establish the optimality of this result. Second, while exploring the structure of the free boundary, we investigate the presence of branch points and show how they lead to completely new types of singularities not present in the scalar case.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we delve into the study of maps $u\in W^{1,2}(\Omega;\overline M)$ that minimize the Alt-Caffarelli energy functional $$ \int_\Omega (|Du|^2 + q^2 \chi_{u^{-1}(M)})\,dx, $$ under the condition that the image $u(\Omega)$ is confined within $\overline M$. Here, $\Omega$ denotes a bounded domain in the ambient space $\mathbb{R}^n$ (with $n\geq 1$), and $M$ represents a smooth domain in the target space $\mathbb{R}^m$ (where $m\geq 2$). Since our minimizing constraint maps coincide with harmonic maps in the interior of the coincidence set, ${\rm int}(u^{-1}(\partial M))$, such maps are prone to developing discontinuities due to their inherent nature. This research marks the commencement of an in-depth analysis of potential singularities that might arise within and around the free boundary. Our first significant contribution is the validity of a $\varepsilon$-regularity theorem. This theorem is founded on a novel method of Lipschitz approximation near points exhibiting low energy. Utilizing this approximation and extending the analysis through a bootstrapping approach, we show Lipschitz continuity of our maps whenever the energy is small energy. Our subsequent key finding reveals that, whenever the complement of $M$ is uniformly convex and of class $C^3$, the maps minimizing the Alt-Caffarelli energy with a positive parameter $q$ exhibit Lipschitz continuity within a universally defined neighborhood of the non-coincidence set $u^{-1}(M)$. In particular, this Lipschitz continuity extends to the free boundary. A noteworthy consequence of our findings is the smoothness of flat free boundaries and of the resulting image maps.

Free boundary regularity for semilinear variational problems with a topological constraint

Abstract:We study a class of semilinear free boundary problems in which admissible functions $u$ have a topological constraint, or spanning condition, on their 1-level set. This constraint forces $\{u=1\}$, which is the free boundary, to behave like a surface with some special types of singularities attached to a fixed boundary frame, in the spirit of the Plateau problem of Harrison-Pugh. Two such free boundary problems are the minimization of capacity among surfaces sharing a common boundary and an Allen-Cahn formulation of the Plateau problem. We establish the existence of minimizers and study the regularity of solutions to the Euler-Lagrange equations, obtaining the optimal Lipschitz regularity for solutions and analytic regularity for the free boundaries away from a codimension two singular set. The singularity models for these problems are given by conical critical points of the minimal capacity problem, which are closely related to spectral optimal partition and segregation problems.

Abstract:The non-transversal intersection of the free boundary with the fixed boundary is obtained for nonlinear uniformly elliptic operators when $\Omega = \{\nabla u \neq 0\} \cap \{x_n>0\}$ thereby solving a problem in elliptic theory that in the case of the Laplacian is completely understood but has remained arcane in the nonlinear setting in higher dimension. Also, a solution is given to a problem discussed in "Regularity of free boundaries in obstacle-type problems" \cite{MR2962060}. The free boundary is $C^1$ in a neighborhood of the fixed if the solution is physical and if $n=2$ in the absolute general context. The regularity is even new for the Laplacian. The innovation is via geometric configurations on how free boundary points converge to the fixed boundary and investigating the spacing between free boundary points.

Abstract:We extend applications of Furstenberg boundary theory to the study of $C^*$-algebras associated to minimal actions $\Gamma\!\curvearrowright\! X$ of discrete groups $\Gamma$ on locally compact spaces $X$. We introduce boundary maps on $(\Gamma,X)$-$C^*$-algebras and investigate their applications in this context. Among other results, we completely determine when $C^*$-algebras generated by covariant representations arising from stabilizer subgroups are simple. We also characterize the intersection property of locally compact $\Gamma$-spaces and simplicity of their associated crossed products.

Abstract:Boundary conformal field theories have several additional terms in the trace anomaly of the stress tensor associated purely with the boundary. We constrain the corresponding boundary central charges in three- and four-dimensional conformal field theories in terms of two- and three-point correlation functions of the displacement operator. We provide a general derivation by comparing the trace anomaly with scale dependent contact terms in the correlation functions. We conjecture a relation between the a-type boundary charge in three dimensions and the stress tensor two-point function near the boundary. We check our results for several free theories.

Abstract:We discuss a class of linear control problems in a Hilbert space setting, which covers diverse systems such as hyperbolic and parabolic equations with boundary control and boundary observation even including memory terms. We introduce abstract boundary data spaces in which the control and observation equations can be formulated without strong geometric constraints on the underlying domain. The results are applied to a boundary control problem for the equations of visco-elasticity.

Topological control for min-max free boundary minimal surfaces

Abstract:We establish general bounds on the topology of free boundary minimal surfaces obtained via min-max methods in compact, three-dimensional ambient manifolds with mean convex boundary. We prove that the first Betti number is lower semicontinuous along min-max sequences converging in the sense of varifolds to free boundary minimal surfaces. In the orientable case, we obtain an even stronger result which implies that if the number of boundary components increases in the varifold limit, then the genus decreases at least as much. We also present several compelling applications, such as the variational construction of a free boundary minimal trinoid in the Euclidean unit ball.

Abstract:This article addresses the problem of boundary correspondence for a sequence of homeomorphisms that change the capacity of a condenser in a controlled way. To study the overall boundary behavior of these mappings, we introduce some capacity metrics in a sequence of domains with nondegenerate core. Completions with respect to these metrics add to the domains new points called boundary elements. As one of the consequences, we obtain not only sufficient conditions for the global uniform convergence of a sequence of homeomorphisms, but some applications to elasticity theory as well.

Abstract:We present the material, spatial, and convective representations for elasticity and fluids with a free boundary from the Lagrangian reduction point of view, using the material and spatial symmetries of these systems. The associated constrained variational principles are formulated and the resulting equations of motion are deduced. In addition, we introduce general free boundary continua that contain both elasticity and free boundary hydrodynamics, extend for them various classical notions, and present the constrained variational principles and the equations of motion in the three representations.

Abstract:The manuscript is devoted to the boundary behavior of mappings with bounded and finite distortion, which has been actively studied recently. We consider mappings of domains of the Euclidean space that satisfy the inverse Poletsky inequality with an integrable majorant, are open, and discrete. Assume that the image of the boundary of the original domain is finitely connected relative to the mapped domain, and the preimage of the boundary of the latter is nowhere a dense set. Then, under certain conditions on the geometry of these domains, it is proved that the specified mappings have a continuous boundary extension. The result is valid even in a more general form, when the majorant in the inverse Poletsky inequality is integrable over almost all concentric spheres centered at each point. In particular, the obtained results are valid for homeomorphisms as well as for open discrete closed mappings with the appropriate modulus condition.

Abstract:In this article, we establish a relationship between geometric quantities of a hypersurface restricted to its boundary, and the geometric quantities of its boundary as a hypersurface of the boundary of the ball. As a first application, we prove that the quantity of umbilical points of a free boundary surface in the unit ball counted with multiplicities depend only on its topology; moreover, we obtain as consequences that free boundary surfaces are annuli if, and only if, they have no umbilical points, and a new proof of the Nitsche Theorem. Secondly, we prove two geometric integral inequalities for free boundary hypersurfaces, and use them to relate some geometric aspects of the hypersurface with topological aspects of its boundary in the three-dimensional case, and to give a new point of view to the Catenoid Conjecture.

Abstract:Map objects' displacement is an important operator in the map generalization and spatial information visualization. In this paper, the constraints of map objects displacement and their satisfaction method with the finite element method are discussed, in which the constraints of map objects displacement and strategies of parameters of finite element method in the displacement process play important roles for the displacement result, and compromised with the spatial reasoning method, a progressive node displacement method is discussed in this paper, which is examined with a road widening case. And the result shows that the force and the force propagation can be considered comprehensively in this method, through which unnecessary map object displacement can be avoided.

Abstract:In this article we consider diffeomorphism groups of manifolds with smooth boundary. We show that the diffeomorphism groups of the manifold and its boundary fit into a short exact sequence which admits local sections. In other words, they form an infinite-dimensional fibre bundle. Manifolds with boundary are of interest in numerical analysis and with a view towards applications in machine learning we establish controllability results for families of vector fields. This generalises older results due to Agrachev and Caponigro in the boundary-less case. Our results show in particular that the diffeomorphism group of a manifold with smooth boundary is generated by the image of the exponential map.

Abstract:The classes of -smooth domains bounded by a contour that is Lyapunov outside any neighborhood of its certain point such that the derivative of a conformal mapping onto the unit disk is continuous at this point are described. The description is given in terms of some spaces for a unit tangent vector on the boundary contour. Corresponding results for piecewise smooth domains are obtained as a consequence.

Abstract:We present a framework for the reduction of various geometric structures extending the classical coisotropic Poisson reduction. For this we introduce constraint manifolds and constraint vector bundles. A constraint Serre-Swan theorem is proven, identifying constraint vector bundles with certain finitely generated projective modules, and a Cartan calculus for constraint differentiable forms and multivector fields is introduced. All of these constructions will be shown to be compatible with reduction. Finally, we apply this to obtain a reduction procedure for Lie (bi-)algebroids and Dirac manifolds.

Abstract:We introduce a family of boundary conditions and point constraints for conformal immersions that increase the controllability of surfaces defined as minimizers of conformal variational problems. Our free boundary conditions fix the metric on the boundary, up to a global scale, and admit a discretization compatible with discrete conformal equivalence. We also introduce constraints on the conformal scale factor, enforcing rigidity of the geometry in regions of interest, and describe how in the presence of point constraints the conformal class encodes knot points of the spline that can be directly manipulated. To control the tangent planes, we introduce flux constraints balancing the internal material stresses. The collection of these point constraints provide intuitive controls for exploring a subspace of conformal immersions interpolating a fixed set of points in space. We demonstrate the applicability of our framework to geometric modeling, mathematical visualization, and form finding.

Abstract:We describe an effective landscape introduced in [1] for the analysis of Constraint Satisfaction problems, such as Sphere Packing, K-SAT and Graph Coloring. This geometric construction reexpresses these problems in the more familiar terms of optimization in rugged energy landscapes. In particular, it allows one to understand the puzzling fact that unsophisticated programs are successful well beyond what was considered to be the `hard' transition, and suggests an algorithm defining a new, higher, easy-hard frontier.
