Abstract:Cages ($r$-regular graphs of girth $g$ and minimum order) and their variants have been studied for over seventy years. Here we propose a new variant, "weighted cages". We characterize their existence; for cases $g=3,4$ we determine their order; we give Moore-like bounds and present some computational results.

Abstract:An $(\{r,m\};g)$-graph is a (simple, undirected) graph of girth $g\geq3$ with vertices of degrees $r$ and $m$ where $2 \leq r < m$ . Given $r,m,g$, we seek the $(\{r,m\};g)$-graphs of minimum order, called $(\{r,m\};g)$-cages or bi-regular cages, whose order is denoted by $n(\{r,m\};g)$. In this paper, we use computational methods for finding $(\{r,m\};g)$-graphs of small order. Firstly, we present an exhaustive generation algorithm, which leads to $\unicode{x2013}$ previously unknown $\unicode{x2013}$ exhaustive lists of $(\{r,m\};g)$-cages for 24 different triples $(r,m,g)$. This also leads to the improvement of the lower bound of $n(\{4,5\};7)$ from 66 to 69. Secondly, we improve 49 upper bounds of $n(\{r,m\};g)$ based on constructions that start from $r$-regular graphs. Lastly, we generalize a theorem by Aguilar, Araujo-Pardo and Berman [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2305.03290" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2305.03290">arXiv:2305.03290</a>, 2023], leading to 73 additional improved upper bounds.

On the existence of $(r,g,χ)$-cages

Abstract:In this paper, we work with simple and finite graphs. We study a generalization of the \emph{Cage Problem}, which has been widely studied since cages were introduced by Tutte \cite{T47} in 1947 and after Erd\" os and Sachs \cite{ES63} proved their existence in 1963. An \emph{$(r,g)$-graph} is an $r$-regular graph in which the shortest cycle has length equal to $g$; that is, it is an $r$-regular graph with girth $g$. An \emph{$(r,g)$-cage} is an $(r,g)$-graph with the smallest possible number of vertices among all $(r,g)$-graphs; the order of an $(r,g)$-cage is denoted by $n(r,g)$. The Cage Problem consists of finding $(r,g)$-cages; it is well-known that $(r,g)$-cages have been determined only for very limited sets of parameter pairs $(r, g)$. There exists a simple lower bound for $n(r,g)$, given by Moore and denoted by $n_0(r,g)$. The cages that attain this bound are called \emph{Moore cages}.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a problem closely related to the Cage Problem and the Degree Diameter Problem. For integers $k\geq 2$, $g\geq 3$ and $d\geq 1$, we define a $(k;\, g,d)$-graph to be a $k$-regular graph with girth $g$ and diameter $d$. We denote by $n_0(k;\,g,d)$ the smallest possible order of such a graph, and, if such a graph exists, we call it a $(k;g,d)$-cage. In particular, we focus on $(k;\,5,4)$-graphs. We show that $n_0(k;\,5,4) \geq k^2+k+2$ for all $k$, and report on the determination of all $(k;\,5,4)$-cages for $k=3, 4$ and $5$ and examples with $k = 6$, and describe some examples of $(k;\,5,4)$-graphs which prove that $n_0(k;\,5,4) \leq 2k^2$ for infinitely many values of $k$.

Abstract:A [z,r;g]-mixed cage is a mixed graph of minimum order such that each vertex has z in-arcs, z out-arcs, r edges, and it has girth g. We present an infinite family of mixed graphs with girth 6. This construction also provides an upper bound on the minimum order of mixed cages of girth 6. Additionally,we introduce a lower bound on the minimum order for any mixed cage.

Abstract:The girth of a graph is defined as the length of a shortest cycle in the graph. A $(k; g)$-cage is a graph of minimum order among all $k$-regular graphs with girth $g$. A cycle $C$ in a graph $G$ is termed nonseparating if the graph $G-V(C)$ remains connected. A conjecture, proposed in [T. Jiang, D. Mubayi. Connectivity and Separating Sets of Cages. J. Graph Theory 29(1)(1998) 35--44], posits that every cycle of length $g$ within a $(k; g)$-cage is nonseparating. While the conjecture has been proven for even $g$ in the aforementioned work, this paper presents a proof demonstrating that the conjecture holds true for odd $g$ as well. Thus, the previously mentioned conjecture was proven to be true.

Abstract:A (δ, g)-cage is a δ-regular graph with girth g and with the least possible number of vertices. In this paper, we show that all (δ, g)-cages with odd girth g ≥ 9 are r-connected, where (r − 1)2 ≤ δ + $\sqrt \delta $ − 2 < r 2 and all (δ, g)-cages with even girth g ≥ 10 are r-connected, where r is the largest integer satisfying $\frac{{r\left( {r - 1} \right)^2 }}{4} + 1 + 2r\left( {r - 1} \right) \leqslant \delta $. These results support a conjecture of Fu, Huang and Rodger that all (δ, g)-cages are δ-connected.
Analogues of Bermond-Bollobás Conjecture for Cages Yield Expander Families

Abstract:This paper presents a possible link between Cages and Expander Graphs by introducing three interconnected variants of the Bermond and Bollobás Conjecture, originally formulated in 1981 within the context of the Degree/Diameter Problem. We adapt these conjectures to cages, with the most robust variant posed as follows: Does there exist a constant $c$ such that for every pair of parameters $(k,g)$ there exists a $k$-regular graph of girth $g$ and order not exceeding $ M(k,g) + c $?; where $M(k,g)$ denotes the value of the so-called Moore bound for cages. We show that a positive answer to any of the three variants of the Bermond and Bollobás Conjecture for cages considered in our paper would yield expander graphs (expander families); thereby establishing a connection between Cages and Expander Graphs.

Abstract:A ( k , g )-cage is a k -regular graph with girth g that has the fewest number of vertices. It has been conjectured (Fu et al., J Graph Theory 24 (1997), 187–191) that all ( k , g )-cages are k -connected for k ≥ 3. A connected graph G is said to be superconnected if every minimum cut-set S is the neighborhood of a vertex of minimum degree. Moreover, if G - S has precisely two components, then G is called tightly superconnected. It was shown (Xu et al., Ars Combin 64 (2002), 181–192) that every (4, g )-cage is 4-connected. Abstract:A (k, g)-cage is a graph that has the least number of vertices among all k-regular graphs with girth g. It has been conjectured (Fu et al. in J. Graph Theory, 24:187–191, 1997) that all (k, g)-cages are k-connected for every k ≥ 3. A k-connected graph G is called superconnected if every k-cutset S is the neighborhood of some vertex. Moreover, if G−S has precisely two components, then G is called tightly superconnected. In this paper, we prove that every (4, g)-cage is tightly superconnected when g ≥ 11 is odd.

Abstract:Mixed graphs have both directed and undirected edges. A mixed cage is a regular mixed graph of given girth with minimum possible order. In this paper we construct a mixed cage of order 30 that achieves the mixed graph analogue of the Moore bound for degree 3, out-degree 1, and girth 6.

Semicubic cages and small graphs of even girth from voltage graphs

Abstract:An \emph{$(3,m;g)$ semicubic graph} is a graph in which all vertices have degrees either $3$ or $m$ and fixed girth $g$. In this paper, we construct families of semicubic graphs of even girth and small order using two different techniques. The first technique generalizes a previous construction which glues cubic cages of girth $g$ together at remote vertices (vertices at distance at least $g/2$). The second technique, the main content of this paper, produces bipartite semicubic $(3,m; g)$-graphs with fixed even girth $g = 4t$ or $4t+2$ using voltage graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_{m}$. When $g = 4t+2$, the graphs have two vertices of degree $m$, while when $g = 4t$ they have exactly three vertices of degree $m$ (the remaining vertices are of degree $3$ in both cases). Specifically, we describe infinite families of semicubic graphs $(3,m; g)$ for $g = \{6, 8, 10, 12\}$ for infinitely many values of $m$. The cases $g = \{6,8\}$ include the unique $6$-cage and the unique $8$-cage when $m = 3$. The families obtained in this paper for girth $g=\{10,12\}$ include examples with the best known bounds for semicubic graphs $(3,m; g)$

Abstract:A vertex-girth-regular $vgr(v,k,g,\lambda)$-graph is a $k$-regular graph of girth $g$ and order $v$ in which every vertex belongs to exactly $\lambda$ cycles of length $g$. While all vertex-transitive graphs are necessarily vertex-girth-regular, the majority of vertex-girth-regular graphs are not vertex-transitive. Similarly, while many of the smallest $k$-regular graphs of girth $g$, the so-called $(k,g)$-cages, are vertex-girth-regular, infinitely many vertex-girth-regular graphs of degree $k$ and girth $g$ exist for many pairs $k,g$. Due to these connections, the study of vertex-girth-regular graphs promises insights into the relations between the classes of extremal, highly symmetric, and locally regular graphs of given degree and girth. This paper lays the foundation to such study by investigating the fundamental properties of $vgr(v,k,g,\lambda)$-graphs, specifically the relations necessarily satisfied by the parameters $v,k,g$ and $\lambda$ to admit the existence of a corresponding vertex-girth-regular graph, by presenting constructions of infinite families of $vgr(v,k,g,\lambda)$-graphs, and by establishing lower bounds on the number $v$ of vertices in a $vgr(v,k,g,\lambda)$-graph. It also includes computational results determining the orders of smallest cubic and quartic graphs of small girths.

On $(k,g)$-Graphs without $(g+1)$-Cycles

Abstract:A $(k,g,\underline{g+1})$-graph is a $k$-regular graph of girth $g$ which does not contain cycles of length $g+1$. Such graphs are known to exist for all parameter pairs $k \geq 3, g \geq 3 $, and we focus on determining the orders $n(k,g,\underline{g+1})$ of the smallest $(k,g,\underline{g+1})$-graphs. This problem can be viewed as a special case of the previously studied Girth-Pair Problem, the problem of finding the order of a smallest $k$-regular graph in which the length of a smallest even length cycle and the length of a smallest odd length cycle are prescribed. When considering the case of an odd girth $g$, this problem also yields results towards the Cage Problem, the problem of finding the order of a smallest $k$-regular graph of girth $g$. We establish the monotonicity of the function $n(k,g,\underline{g+1})$ with respect to increasing $g$, and present universal lower bounds for the values $n(k,g,\underline{g+1})$. We propose an algorithm for generating all $(k,g,\underline{g+1})$-graphs on $n$ vertices, use this algorithm to determine several of the smaller values $n(k,g,\underline{g+1})$, and discuss various approaches to finding smallest $(k,g,\underline{g+1})$-graphs within several classes of highly symmetrical graphs.

Isometric Cycles and a Generalization of Moore Graphs

Abstract:The equator of a graph is the length of a longest isometric cycle. We bound the order $n$ of a graph from below by its equator $q$, girth $g$ and minimum degree $\delta$ - and show that this bound is sharp when there exists a Moore graph with girth $g$ and minimum degree $\delta$. The extremal graphs that attain our bound give an analogue of Moore graphs. We prove that these extremal `Moore-like' graphs are regular, and that every one of their vertices is contained in some maximum length isometric cycle. We show that these extremal graphs have a highly structured partition that is unique, and easily derived from any of its maximum length isometric cycles. We characterize the extremal graphs with girth 3 and 4, and those with girth 5 and minimum degree 3. We also bound the order of $C_4$-free graphs with given equator and minimum degree, and show that this bound is nearly sharp. We conclude with some questions and conjectures further relating our extremal graphs to cages and Moore graphs.

Abstract:Caging is a promising tool which allows a robot to manipulate an object without directly reasoning about the contact dynamics involved. Furthermore, caging also provides useful guarantees in terms of robustness to uncertainty, and often serves as a way-point to a grasp. Unfortunately, previous work on caging is often based on computational geometry or discrete topology tools, causing restriction on gripper geometry, and difficulty on integration into larger manipulation frameworks. In this paper, we develop a convex-combinatorial model to characterize caging from an optimization perspective. More specifically, we study the configuration space of the object, where the fingers act as obstacles that enclose the configuration of the object. The convex-combinatorial nature of this approach provides guarantees on optimality, convergence and scalability, and its optimization nature makes it adaptable for further applications on robot manipulation tasks.

Abstract:A bi-coset graph Γ ( G ; H , K ) is a bipartite graph with the two vertex sets consisting of the cosets of subgroups H , K of a group G, and the adjacency determined by non-empty intersection. Bi-coset graphs constitute a classical object of algebraic graph theory and have been studied in various contexts (often with regard to their symmetries). In this paper, bi-coset graphs are revisited with the aim of using them in connection with the Cage Problem, the problem of finding a smallest k-regular graph of girth g, and with its generalization, the problem of finding a smallest biregular graph of girth g with vertices of degrees m , n . The girth of a bi-coset graph is shown to be related to the existence of special alternating sequences of elements from H and K, and k-regular bi-coset graphs of arbitrary large girths are shown to exist for all k ≥ 2 . Bi-coset graphs are shown to be particularly suitable for constructions of bipartite biregular graphs which are biregular graphs in which each of the two sets making the graph bipartite consists of vertices of the same degree. A few bipartite biregular bi-coset graphs found in the paper are shown to be of the smallest order among all bipartite biregular graphs with the same parameters. Interestingly, one of our constructions starts from prime pairs of the form p, 6 p + 1 .

Abstract:We address the problem of enumeration of seating arrangements of married couples around a circular table such that no spouses sit next to each other and no k consecutive persons are of the same gender. While the case of k=2 corresponds to the classical problème des ménages with a well-studied solution, no closed-form expression for the number of seating arrangements is known when k>=3. We propose a novel approach for this type of problems based on enumeration of walks in certain algebraically weighted de Bruijn graphs. Our approach leads to new expressions for the menage numbers and their exponential generating function and allows one to efficiently compute the number of seating arrangements in general cases, which we illustrate in detail for the ternary case of k=3.

Hypergraphs of girth 5 and 6 and coding theory

Abstract:In this paper, we study the maximum number of edges in an $N$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with girth $g$ where $g \in \{5,6 \}$. Writing $\textrm{ex}_r ( N, \mathcal{C}_{<g} )$ for this maximum, it is shown that $\textrm{ex}_r ( N , \mathcal{C}_{ < 5} ) = \Omega_r ( N^{3/2 - o(1)} )$ for $r \in \{4,5,6 \}$. We address an unproved claim from [31] asserting a technique of Ruzsa can be used to show that this lower bound holds for all $r \geq 3$. We carefully explain one of the main obstacles that was overlooked at the time the claim from [31] was made, and show that this obstacle can be overcome when $r\in \{4,5,6\}$. We use constructions from coding theory to prove nontrivial lower bounds that hold for all $r \geq 3$. Finally, we use a recent result of Conlon, Fox, Sudakov, and Zhao to show that the sphere packing bound from coding theory may be improved when upper bounding the size of linear $q$-ary codes of distance $6$.

Characterizations of $A_\infty$ Weights in Martingale Spaces

Abstract:Grafakos systematically proved that $A_\infty$ weights have different characterizations for cubes in Euclidean spaces in his classical text book. Very recently, Duoandikoetxea, Mart\'ın-Reyes, Ombrosi and Kosz discussed several characterizations of the $A_{\infty}$ weights in the setting of general bases. By conditional expectations, we study $A_\infty$ weights in martingale spaces. Because conditional expectations are Radon-Nikodým derivatives with respect to sub$\hbox{-}\sigma\hbox{-}$fields which have no geometric structures, we need new ingredients. Under a regularity assumption on weights, we obtain equivalent characterizations of the $A_{\infty}$ weights. Moreover, using weights modulo conditional expectations, we have one-way implications of different characterizations.

Abstract:We study $g$-vector cones in a cluster algebra defined from a weighted orbifold of rank $n$ introduced by Felikson, Shapiro and Tumarkin. We determine the closure of the union of the $g$-vector cones. It is equal to $\mathbb{R}^n$ except for a weighted orbifold with empty boundary and exactly one puncture, in which case it is equal to the half space of a certain explicit hyperplane in $\mathbb{R}^n$.
