Abstract:A [z,r;g]-mixed cage is a mixed graph of minimum order such that each vertex has z in-arcs, z out-arcs, r edges, and it has girth g. We present an infinite family of mixed graphs with girth 6. This construction also provides an upper bound on the minimum order of mixed cages of girth 6. Additionally,we introduce a lower bound on the minimum order for any mixed cage.

Isometric Cycles and a Generalization of Moore Graphs

Abstract:The equator of a graph is the length of a longest isometric cycle. We bound the order $n$ of a graph from below by its equator $q$, girth $g$ and minimum degree $\delta$ - and show that this bound is sharp when there exists a Moore graph with girth $g$ and minimum degree $\delta$. The extremal graphs that attain our bound give an analogue of Moore graphs. We prove that these extremal `Moore-like' graphs are regular, and that every one of their vertices is contained in some maximum length isometric cycle. We show that these extremal graphs have a highly structured partition that is unique, and easily derived from any of its maximum length isometric cycles. We characterize the extremal graphs with girth 3 and 4, and those with girth 5 and minimum degree 3. We also bound the order of $C_4$-free graphs with given equator and minimum degree, and show that this bound is nearly sharp. We conclude with some questions and conjectures further relating our extremal graphs to cages and Moore graphs.

Analogues of Bermond-Bollobás Conjecture for Cages Yield Expander Families

Abstract:This paper presents a possible link between Cages and Expander Graphs by introducing three interconnected variants of the Bermond and Bollobás Conjecture, originally formulated in 1981 within the context of the Degree/Diameter Problem. We adapt these conjectures to cages, with the most robust variant posed as follows: Does there exist a constant $c$ such that for every pair of parameters $(k,g)$ there exists a $k$-regular graph of girth $g$ and order not exceeding $ M(k,g) + c $?; where $M(k,g)$ denotes the value of the so-called Moore bound for cages. We show that a positive answer to any of the three variants of the Bermond and Bollobás Conjecture for cages considered in our paper would yield expander graphs (expander families); thereby establishing a connection between Cages and Expander Graphs.

On bipartite $(1,1,k)$-mixed graphs

Abstract:Mixed graphs can be seen as digraphs with arcs and edges (or digons, that is, two opposite arcs). In this paper, we consider the case where such graphs are bipartite and in which the undirected and directed degrees are one. The best graphs, in terms of the number of vertices, are presented for small diameters. Moreover, two infinite families of such graphs with diameter $k$ and number of vertices of the order of $2^{k/2}$ are proposed, one of them being totally regular $(1,1)$-mixed graphs. In addition, we present two more infinite families called chordal ring and chordal double ring mixed graphs, which are bipartite and related to tessellations of the plane. Finally, we give an upper bound that improves the Moore bound for bipartite mixed graphs for $r = z = 1$.

A simple and sharper proof of the hypergraph Moore bound

Abstract:The hypergraph Moore bound is an elegant statement that characterizes the extremal trade-off between the girth - the number of hyperedges in the smallest cycle or even cover (a subhypergraph with all degrees even) and size - the number of hyperedges in a hypergraph. For graphs (i.e., $2$-uniform hypergraphs), a bound tight up to the leading constant was proven in a classical work of Alon, Hoory and Linial [AHL02]. For hypergraphs of uniformity $k>2$, an appropriate generalization was conjectured by Feige [Fei08]. The conjecture was settled up to an additional $\log^{4k+1} n$ factor in the size in a recent work of Guruswami, Kothari and Manohar [GKM21]. Their argument relies on a connection between the existence of short even covers and the spectrum of a certain randomly signed Kikuchi matrix. Their analysis, especially for the case of odd $k$, is significantly complicated. In this work, we present a substantially simpler and shorter proof of the hypergraph Moore bound. Our key idea is the use of a new reweighted Kikuchi matrix and an edge deletion step that allows us to drop several involved steps in [GKM21]'s analysis such as combinatorial bucketing of rows of the Kikuchi matrix and the use of the Schudy-Sviridenko polynomial concentration. Our simpler proof also obtains tighter parameters: in particular, the argument gives a new proof of the classical Moore bound of [AHL02] with no loss (the proof in [GKM21] loses a $\log^3 n$ factor), and loses only a single logarithmic factor for all $k>2$-uniform hypergraphs. As in [GKM21], our ideas naturally extend to yield a simpler proof of the full trade-off for strongly refuting smoothed instances of constraint satisfaction problems with similarly improved parameters.

Computational methods for finding bi-regular cages

Abstract:An $(\{r,m\};g)$-graph is a (simple, undirected) graph of girth $g\geq3$ with vertices of degrees $r$ and $m$ where $2 \leq r < m$ . Given $r,m,g$, we seek the $(\{r,m\};g)$-graphs of minimum order, called $(\{r,m\};g)$-cages or bi-regular cages, whose order is denoted by $n(\{r,m\};g)$. In this paper, we use computational methods for finding $(\{r,m\};g)$-graphs of small order. Firstly, we present an exhaustive generation algorithm, which leads to $\unicode{x2013}$ previously unknown $\unicode{x2013}$ exhaustive lists of $(\{r,m\};g)$-cages for 24 different triples $(r,m,g)$. This also leads to the improvement of the lower bound of $n(\{4,5\};7)$ from 66 to 69. Secondly, we improve 49 upper bounds of $n(\{r,m\};g)$ based on constructions that start from $r$-regular graphs. Lastly, we generalize a theorem by Aguilar, Araujo-Pardo and Berman [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2305.03290" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2305.03290">arXiv:2305.03290</a>, 2023], leading to 73 additional improved upper bounds.

Abstract:We derive attainable upper bounds on the algebraic connectivity (spectral gap) of a regular graph in terms of its diameter and girth. This bound agrees with the well-known Alon-Boppana-Friedman bound for graphs of even diameter, but is an improvement for graphs of odd diameter. For the girth bound, we show that only Moore graphs can attain it, and these only exist for very few possible girths. For diameter bound, we use a combination of stochastic algorithms and exhaustive search to find graphs which attain it. For 3-regular graphs, we find attainable graphs for all diameters $D$ up to and including $D=9$ (the case of $D=10$ is open). These graphs are extremely rare and also have high girth; for example we found exactly 45 distinct cubic graphs on 44 vertices attaining the upper bound when $D=7$; all have girth 8 (out of a total of about $10^{20}$ cubic graphs on 44 vertices, including 266362 having girth 8). We also exhibit families of $d$-regular graphs attaining upper bounds with $D=3$ and $4$, and with $g=6.$ Several conjectures are proposed.

Abstract:The Moore bound constitutes both an upper bound on the order of a graph of maximum degree $d$ and diameter $D=k$ and a lower bound on the order of a graph of minimum degree $d$ and odd girth $g=2k+1$. Graphs missing or exceeding the Moore bound by $\epsilon$ are called {\it graphs with defect or excess $\epsilon$}, respectively. While {\it Moore graphs} (graphs with $\epsilon=0$) and graphs with defect or excess 1 have been characterized almost completely, graphs with defect or excess 2 represent a wide unexplored area. Graphs with defect (excess) 2 satisfy the equation $G_{d,k}(A) = J_n + B$ ($G_{d,k}(A) = J_n-B$), where $A$ denotes the adjacency matrix of the graph in question, $n$ its order, $J_n$ the $n\times n$ matrix whose entries are all 1's, $B$ the adjacency matrix of a union of vertex-disjoint cycles, and $G_{d,k}(x)$ a polynomial with integer coefficients such that the matrix $G_{d,k}(A)$ gives the number of paths of length at most $k$ joining each pair of vertices in the graph. In particular, if $B$ is the adjacency matrix of a cycle of order $n$ we call the corresponding graphs \emph{graphs with cyclic defect or excess}; these graphs are the subject of our attention in this paper. We prove the non-existence of infinitely many such graphs. As the highlight of the paper we provide the asymptotic upper bound of $O(\frac{64}3d^{3/2})$ for the number of graphs of odd degree $d\ge3$ and cyclic defect or excess. This bound is in fact quite generous, and as a way of illustration, we show the non-existence of some families of graphs of odd degree $d\ge3$ and cyclic defect or excess. Actually, we conjecture that, apart from the Möbius ladder on 8 vertices, no non-trivial graph of any degree $\ge 3$ and cyclic defect or excess exists.

Abstract:In this paper, we work with simple and finite graphs. We study a generalization of the \emph{Cage Problem}, which has been widely studied since cages were introduced by Tutte \cite{T47} in 1947 and after Erd\" os and Sachs \cite{ES63} proved their existence in 1963. An \emph{$(r,g)$-graph} is an $r$-regular graph in which the shortest cycle has length equal to $g$; that is, it is an $r$-regular graph with girth $g$. An \emph{$(r,g)$-cage} is an $(r,g)$-graph with the smallest possible number of vertices among all $(r,g)$-graphs; the order of an $(r,g)$-cage is denoted by $n(r,g)$. The Cage Problem consists of finding $(r,g)$-cages; it is well-known that $(r,g)$-cages have been determined only for very limited sets of parameter pairs $(r, g)$. There exists a simple lower bound for $n(r,g)$, given by Moore and denoted by $n_0(r,g)$. The cages that attain this bound are called \emph{Moore cages}.

Abstract:In the context of the degree-diameter problem for directed graphs, it is known that the number of vertices of a strongly connected bipartite digraph satisfies a Moore-like bound in terms of its diameter k and the maximum out-degrees (d1, d2) of its partite sets of vertices. It has been proved that, when d1d2 1, the digraphs attaining such a bound, called Moore bipartite digraphs, only exist when 2 ≤ k ≤ 4. This paper deals with the problem of their enumeration. In this context, using the theory of circulant matrices and the so-called De Bruijn near-factorizations of cyclic groups, we present some new constructions of Moore bipartite digraphs of diameter three and composite out-degrees. By applying the iterated line digraph technique, such constructions also provide new families of dense bipartite digraphs with arbitrary diameter. Moreover, we show that the line digraph structure is inherent in any Moore bipartite digraph G of diameter k = 4, which means that G = L G′, where G′ is a Moore bipartite digraph of diameter k = 3. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The modelling of interconnection networks by graphs motivated the study of several extremal problems that involve well known parameters of a graph (degree, diameter, girth and order) and ask for the optimal value of one of them while holding the other two fixed. Here we focus in {\em bipartite Moore graphs\/}, that is, bipartite graphs attaining the optimum order, fixed either the degree/diameter or degree/girth. The fact that there are very few bipartite Moore graphs suggests the relaxation of some of the constraints implied by the bipartite Moore bound. First we deal with {\em local bipartite Moore graphs}. We find in some cases those local bipartite Moore graphs with local girths as close as possible to the local girths given by a bipartite Moore graph. Second, we construct a family of $(q+2)$-bipartite graphs of order $2(q^2+q+5)$ and diameter $3$, for $q$ a power of prime. These graphs attain the record value for $q=9$ and improve the values for $q=11$ and $q=13$.

Abstract:Let $\rho(G)$ denote the number of convex cycles of a simple graph G of order n, size m, and girth 3 <= g <=n. It is proved that $\rho(G) \leq \frac{n}{g}(m-n+1)$ and that equality holds if and only if G is an even cycle or a Moore graph. The equality also holds for a possible Moore graph of diameter 2 and degree 57 thus giving a new characterization of Moore graphs.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a problem closely related to the Cage Problem and the Degree Diameter Problem. For integers $k\geq 2$, $g\geq 3$ and $d\geq 1$, we define a $(k;\, g,d)$-graph to be a $k$-regular graph with girth $g$ and diameter $d$. We denote by $n_0(k;\,g,d)$ the smallest possible order of such a graph, and, if such a graph exists, we call it a $(k;g,d)$-cage. In particular, we focus on $(k;\,5,4)$-graphs. We show that $n_0(k;\,5,4) \geq k^2+k+2$ for all $k$, and report on the determination of all $(k;\,5,4)$-cages for $k=3, 4$ and $5$ and examples with $k = 6$, and describe some examples of $(k;\,5,4)$-graphs which prove that $n_0(k;\,5,4) \leq 2k^2$ for infinitely many values of $k$.

Abstract:Results of torsional oscillation tests are reported that were performed at the temperature T=230C on melts of a hybrid nanocomposite consisting of isotactic polypropylene reinforced with 5 wt.% of montmorillonite clay. Prior to mechanical testing, specimens were annealed at temperatures ranging from 250 to 310C for various amounts of time (from 15 to 420 min). Thermal treatment induced degradation of the matrix and a pronounced decrease in its molecular weight. An integro-differential equation is derived for the evolution of molecular weight based on the fragmentation-aggregation concept. This relation involves two adjustable parameters that are found by fitting observations. With reference to the theory of transient networks, constitutive equations are developed for the viscoelastic response of nanocomposite melts. The stress-strain relations are characterized by three material constants (the shear modulus, the average energy for rearrangement of strands and the standard deviation of activation energies) that are determined by matching the dependencies of storage and loss moduli on frequency of oscillations. Good agreement is demonstrated between the experimental data and the results of numerical simulation. It is revealed that the average energy for separation of strands from temporary junctions is independent of molecular weight, whereas the elastic modulus and the standard deviation of activation energies linearly increase with mass-average molecular weight.

Abstract:The girth of a graph is defined as the length of a shortest cycle in the graph. A $(k; g)$-cage is a graph of minimum order among all $k$-regular graphs with girth $g$. A cycle $C$ in a graph $G$ is termed nonseparating if the graph $G-V(C)$ remains connected. A conjecture, proposed in [T. Jiang, D. Mubayi. Connectivity and Separating Sets of Cages. J. Graph Theory 29(1)(1998) 35--44], posits that every cycle of length $g$ within a $(k; g)$-cage is nonseparating. While the conjecture has been proven for even $g$ in the aforementioned work, this paper presents a proof demonstrating that the conjecture holds true for odd $g$ as well. Thus, the previously mentioned conjecture was proven to be true.

Abstract:Radial Moore graphs and digraphs are extremal graphs related to the Moore ones where the distance-preserving spanning tree is preserved for some vertices. This leads to classify them according to their proximity to being a Moore graph or digraph. In this paper we deal with mixed radial Moore graphs, where the mixed setting allows edges and arcs as different elements. An exhaustive computer search shows the top ranked graphs for an specific set of parameters. Moreover, we study the problem of their existence by providing two infinite families for different values of the degrees and diameter $3$. One of these families turns out to be optimal.

Abstract:Erdős and Hajnal conjectured that for every graph $H$, there exists $c>0$ such that every $H$-free graph $G$ has a clique or a stable set of size at least $|G|^c$ (a graph is $H$-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$). Alon, Pach, and Solymosi reduced the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture to the case when $H$ is {\em prime} (that is, $H$ cannot be obtained by vertex-substitution from smaller graphs); but until now, it was not shown for any prime graph with more than five vertices. We will provide infinitely many prime graphs that satisfy the conjecture. Let $H$ be a graph with the property that for every prime induced subgraph $G'$ with $|G'|\ge 3$, $G'$ has a vertex of degree one and a vertex of degree $|G'|-2$. We will prove that every graph $H$ with this property satisfies the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture, and infinitely many graphs with this property are prime. More generally, say a graph is {\em buildable} if every prime induced subgraph with at least three vertices has a vertex of degree one. We prove that if $H_1$ and $\overline{H_2}$ are buildable, there exists $c>0$ such that every graph $G$ that is both $H_1$-free and $H_2$-free has a clique or a stable set of size at least $|G|^c$. Our proof uses a new technique of ``iterative sparsification'', where we pass to a sequence of successively more restricted induced subgraphs. This approach also extends to ordered graphs and to tournaments. For ordered graphs, we obtain a theorem which significantly extends a recent result of Pach and Tomon about excluding monotone paths; and for tournaments, we obtain infinitely many new prime tournaments that satisfy the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture (in tournament form).

Graphs with Large Girth and Small Cop Number

Abstract:In this paper we consider the cop number of graphs with no, or few, short cycles. We show that when $G$ is graph of girth $g$ and the minimum degree $\delta \geq 2$, then $c(G) = O(n\log(n)(\delta-1)^{-\lfloor \frac{g+1}{4} \rfloor})$ as a function of $n$. This extends work of Frankl and implies that if $G$ is large and dense in the sense that $\delta \geq n^{\frac{2}{g}+\epsilon}$, then $G$ satisfies Meyniel's conjecture, that is $c(G) = O(\sqrt{n})$. Moreover, it implies that if $G$ is large and dense in the sense that there $\delta \geq n^{\epsilon}$, some $\epsilon >0$, while also having girth $g \geq 7$, then there exists an $\alpha>0$ such that $c(G) = O(n^{1-\alpha})$, thereby satisfying the weak Meyniel's conjecture. Of course, this implies similar results for dense graphs with small, that is $O(n^{1-\alpha})$, numbers of short cycles, as each cycle can be broken by adding a single cop.
