Abstract:In a classical chess round-robin tournament, each of $n$ players wins, draws, or loses a game against each of the other $n-1$ players. A win rewards a player with 1 points, a draw with 1/2 point, and a loss with 0 points. We are interested in the distribution of the scores associated with ranks of $n$ players after ${\displaystyle {n \choose 2}}$ games, i.e. the distribution of the maximal score, second maximum, and so on. The exact distribution for a general $n$ seems impossible to obtain; we obtain a limit distribution.

Abstract:In a round-robin tournament, a team may lack the incentive to win if its final rank does not depend on the outcome of the matches still to be played. This paper introduces a classification scheme to determine these weakly (where one team is indifferent) or strongly (where both teams are indifferent) stakeless matches in a double round-robin contest with four teams. The probability that such matches arise can serve as a novel fairness criterion to compare and evaluate match schedules. Our approach is illustrated by the UEFA Champions League group stage. A simulation model is built to compare the 12 valid schedules for the group matches. Some schedules are shown to be dominated by other schedules. It is found that the strongest team should play at home in the last round against one of the middle teams, depending on the preferences of the tournament organiser. Choosing an optimal sequence of matches with respect to the proposed metric can help to avoid uninteresting matches.

Abstract:Let $T$ be a tournament with nondecreasing score sequence $R$ and $A$ be its tournament matrix. An upset of $T$ corresponds to an entry above the main diagonal of $A$. Given a feasible score sequence $R$, Fulkerson~(1965) gave a simple recursive construction for a tournament with score sequence $R$ and the minimum number of upsets, and Hacioglu et al. (2019) provided a construction for all of such tournament matrices. Let $U_{\min}(R)$ denote the set of tournament matrices with score sequence $R$ that have minimum number of upsets. Brauldi and Li~(1983) characterized the strong score sequences $R$ ($R$ is strong if a tournament $T$ with score sequence $R$ is strongly connected) with $|U_{\min}(R)|=1$. In this article, we characterize all feasible score sequences $R$ with $|U_{\min}(R)|=1$ and give an explicit formula for the number of the feasible score sequences $R$ with $|U_{\min}(R)|=1$.

Abstract:We study tournaments where winning a rank-dependent prize requires passing a minimum performance standard. We show that, for any prize allocation, the optimal standard is always at a mode of performance that is weakly higher than the global mode and identify a necessary and sufficient condition for it to be at the global mode. When the prize scheme can be designed as well, the winner-take-all prize scheme is optimal for noise distributions with an increasing failure rate; and awarding equal prizes to all qualifying agents is optimal for noise distributions with a decreasing failure rate. For distributions with monotone likelihood ratios – log-concave and log-convex, respectively – these pay schemes are also optimal in a larger class of anonymous, monotone contracts that may depend on cardinal performance.

Abstract:Scoring in Multi-Event Tournaments How much is a first place worth? Is the athlete who came first once and third twice better than the athlete who came second three times? Different sports value these positions differently: (60, 54, 48) in IBU biathlon, (25, 18, 15) in F1 racing, (8, 7, 6) in Diamond League athletics. Are these choices based on anything? Is there even a rational way to choose a scoring vector of arbitrary length to rank any number of athletes? In “How should we score athletes and candidates: Geometric scoring rules,” authors A.Y. Kondratev, E. Ianovski, and A.S. Nesterov investigate two approaches to how the problem of choosing a scoring vector for a tournament can be reduced to the choice of a single parameter: an axiomatic approach based on eliminating spoilers and an optimization approach based on maximizing the expected quality of the winner. Intriguingly, the vectors generated by the second approach are uncannily similar to those used in real sporting events.

Abstract:We describe a round robin scheduling problem for a competition played in two divisions, motivated by a scheduling problem brought to the second author by a local sports organisation. The first division has teams from 2n clubs, and is played in a double round robin in which the draw for the second round robin is identical to the first. The second division has teams from two additional clubs, and is played as a single round robin during the first 2n+1 rounds of the first division. We will say that two clubs have a **common fixture** if their teams in division one and two are scheduled to play each other in the same round, and show that for n>1 the maximum possible number of common fixtures is 2n^2 - 3n + 4. Our construction of draws achieving this maximum is based on a bipyramidal one-factorisation of K_{2n}, which represents the draw in division one. Moreover, if we additionally require the home and away status of common fixtures to be the same in both divisions, we show that the draw can be chosen to be balanced in all three round robins.

Abstract:We consider the following variant of the round-robin scheduling problem: 2 n people play a number of rounds in which two opposing teams of n players are reassembled in each round. Each two players should play at least once in the same team, and each two players should play at least once in opposing teams. We provide an explicit formula for calculating the minimal numbers of rounds needed to satisfy both conditions. Moreover, we also show how one can construct the corresponding playing schedules.

Abstract:We classify the set of tournament score sequences on signed graphs, generalizing a classical result of Landau. We also study the combinatorics of such tournaments with given score sequence. Specifically, we show that the Coxeter analogues of the interchange graphs introduced by Brualdi and Li remain degree regular. This degree can be interpreted geometrically, in terms of distances in the Coxeter permutahedra studied recently by Ardila, Castillo, Eur and Postnikov.

On the Power of Dominated Players in Team Competitions.

Abstract:We investigate multi-round team competitions between two teams, where each team selects one of its players simultaneously in each round and each player can play at most once. The competition defines an extensive-form game with perfect recall and can be solved efficiently by standard methods. We are interested in the properties of the subgame perfect equilibria of this game. We first show that uniformly random strategy is a subgame perfect equilibrium strategy for both teams when there are no redundant players (i.e., the number of players in each team equals to the number of rounds of the competition). Secondly, a team can safely abandon its weak players if it has redundant players and the strength of players is transitive. We then focus on the more interesting case where there are redundant players and the strength of players is not transitive. In this case, we obtain several counterintuitive results. First of all, a player might help improve the payoff of its team, even if it is dominated by the entire other team. We give a necessary condition for a dominated player to be useful. We also study the extent to which the dominated players can increase the payoff. These results bring insights into playing and designing general team competitions.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Ahead of Print. We consider the problem of finding a maximal independent set (MIS) in the shared blackboard communication model with vertex-partitioned inputs. There are [math] players corresponding to vertices of an undirected graph, and each player sees the edges incident on its vertex; this way, each edge is known by both its endpoints and is thus shared by two players. The players communicate in simultaneous rounds by posting their messages on a shared blackboard visible to all players, with the goal of computing an MIS of the graph. While the MIS problem is well studied in other distributed models and while shared blackboard is, perhaps, the simplest broadcast model, lower bounds for our problem were only known against one-round protocols. We present a lower bound on the round-communication tradeoff for computing an MIS in this model. Specifically, we show that, when [math] rounds of interaction are allowed, at least one player needs to communicate [math] bits. In particular, with logarithmic bandwidth, finding an MIS requires [math] rounds. This lower bound can be compared with the algorithm of Ghaffari et al. [Proceedings of the 2018 ACM Symposium on Principles of Distributed Computing, 2018, pp. 129–138] that solves the MIS in [math] rounds but with a logarithmic bandwidth for an average player. Additionally, our lower bound further extends to the closely related problem of maximal bipartite matching. The presence of edge-sharing gives the algorithms in our model a surprising power, and numerous algorithmic results exploiting this power are known. For a similar reason, proving lower bounds in this model is much more challenging because this sharing in the players' inputs prohibits the use of standard number-in-hand communication complexity arguments. Thus, to prove our results, we devise a new round elimination framework, which we call partial-input embedding, that may also be useful in future work for proving round-sensitive lower bounds in the presence of shared inputs. Finally, we discuss several implications of our results to multiround (adaptive) distributed sketching algorithms, broadcast congested clique, and the welfare maximization problem in two-sided matching markets.

Abstract:The score sequence of a tournament is the sequence of the out-degrees of its vertices arranged in nondecreasing order. The problem of counting score sequences of a tournament with $n$ vertices is more than 100 years old (MacMahon 1920). In 2013 Hanna conjectured a surprising and elegant recursion for these numbers. We settle this conjecture in the affirmative by showing that it is a corollary to our main theorem, which is a factorization of the generating function for score sequences with a distinguished index. We also derive a closed formula and a quadratic time algorithm for counting score sequences.

Abstract:Tournament solutions are standard tools for identifying winners based on pairwise comparisons between competing alternatives. The recently studied notion of margin of victory (MoV) offers a general method for refining the winner set of any given tournament solution, thereby increasing the discriminative power of the solution. In this paper, we reveal a number of structural insights on the MoV by investigating fundamental properties such as monotonicity and consistency with respect to the covering relation. Furthermore, we provide experimental evidence on the extent to which the MoV notion refines winner sets in tournaments generated according to various stochastic models.

Abstract:We focus on the probability P of full ranking(any 2 alternatives don't receive a same total score) with integer-scoring voting rule,which is similar to Borda count.We bring forth formulas that compute P under certain assumptions.Computer programs are designed and used to compute the values of P.With the data obtained,we discussed how the three variants of an integer-scoring voting rule influence the values of P,and how an integer-scoring voting rule should be designed and adjusted. Some conclusions are drawn.

Abstract:Multi-round competitions often double or triple the points awarded in the final round, calling it a bonus, to maximize spectators’ excitement. In a two-player competition with n rounds, we aim to derive the optimal bonus size to maximize the audience’s overall expected surprise (as defined in [7]). We model the audience’s prior belief over the two players’ ability levels as a beta distribution. Using a novel analysis that clarifies and simplifies the computation, we find that the optimal bonus depends greatly upon the prior belief and obtain solutions of various forms for both the case of a finite number of rounds and the asymptotic case. In an interesting special case, we show that the optimal bonus approximately and asymptotically equals to the “expected lead”, the number of points the weaker player will need to come back in expectation. Moreover, we observe that priors with a higher skewness lead to a higher optimal bonus size, and in the symmetric case, priors with a higher uncertainty also lead to a higher optimal bonus size. This matches our intuition since a highly asymmetric prior leads to a high “expected lead”, and a highly uncertain symmetric prior often leads to a lopsided game, which again benefits from a larger bonus.

Abstract:In the private values single object auction model, we construct a satisfactory mechanism - a symmetric, dominant strategy incentive compatible, and budget-balanced mechanism. Our mechanism allocates the object to the highest valued agent with more than 99% probability provided there are at least 14 agents. It is also ex-post individually rational. We show that our mechanism is optimal in a restricted class of satisfactory ranking mechanisms. Since achieving efficiency through a dominant strategy incentive compatible and budget-balanced mechanism is impossible in this model, our results illustrate the limits of this impossibility.

Refining Tournament Solutions via Margin of Victory

Abstract:Tournament solutions are frequently used to select winners from a set of alternatives based on pairwise comparisons between alternatives. Prior work has shown that several common tournament solutions tend to select large winner sets and therefore have low discriminative power. In this paper, we propose a general framework for refining tournament solutions. In order to distinguish between winning alternatives, and also between non-winning ones, we introduce the notion of margin of victory (MoV) for tournament solutions. MoV is a robustness measure for individual alternatives: For winners, the MoV captures the distance from dropping out of the winner set, and for non-winners, the distance from entering the set. In each case, distance is measured in terms of which pairwise comparisons would have to be reversed in order to achieve the desired outcome. For common tournament solutions, including the top cycle, the uncovered set, and the Banks set, we determine the complexity of computing the MoV and provide worst-case bounds on the MoV for both winners and non-winners. Our results can also be viewed from the perspective of bribery and manipulation.

Abstract:A k-hypertournament is a complete k-hypergraph with each k-edge endowed with an orientation, that is, a linear arrangement of the vertices contained in the edge. In a k-hypertournament, the score s(i) (losing score r(i)) of a vertex v(i) is the number of arcs containing v(i) in which v(i) is not the last element (in which v(i) is the last element). The total score of v(i) is defined as t(i) = s(i) - r(i). In this paper we obtain stronger inequalities for the quantities Sigma(i is an element of I)r(i), Sigma(i is an element of I) s(i) and Sigma(i is an element of I) t(i), where I subset of {1, 2, ..., n}. Furthermore, we discuss the case of equality for these inequalities. We also characterize total score sequences of strong k-hypertournaments.
Subset Selection Based On Multiple Rankings in the Presence of Bias: Effectiveness of Fairness Constraints for Multiwinner Voting Score Functions

Abstract:We consider the problem of subset selection where one is given multiple rankings of items and the goal is to select the highest ``quality'' subset. Score functions from the multiwinner voting literature have been used to aggregate rankings into quality scores for subsets. We study this setting of subset selection problems when, in addition, rankings may contain systemic or unconscious biases toward a group of items. For a general model of input rankings and biases, we show that requiring the selected subset to satisfy group fairness constraints can improve the quality of the selection with respect to unbiased rankings. Importantly, we show that for fairness constraints to be effective, different multiwinner score functions may require a drastically different number of rankings: While for some functions, fairness constraints need an exponential number of rankings to recover a close-to-optimal solution, for others, this dependency is only polynomial. This result relies on a novel notion of ``smoothness'' of submodular functions in this setting that quantifies how well a function can ``correctly'' assess the quality of items in the presence of bias. The results in this paper can be used to guide the choice of multiwinner score functions for the subset selection setting considered here; we additionally provide a tool to empirically enable this.
