Abstract:Based on known methods for computing the number of distinct score sequences for $n$-vertex tournaments, we develop algorithms for computing the number of distinct score sequences for self-complementary tournaments, strong tournaments, and tournaments that are both self-complementary and strong.

Abstract:The score sequence of a tournament is the sequence of the out-degrees of its vertices arranged in nondecreasing order. The problem of counting score sequences of a tournament with $n$ vertices is more than 100 years old (MacMahon 1920). In 2013 Hanna conjectured a surprising and elegant recursion for these numbers. We settle this conjecture in the affirmative by showing that it is a corollary to our main theorem, which is a factorization of the generating function for score sequences with a distinguished index. We also derive a closed formula and a quadratic time algorithm for counting score sequences.

Abstract:We classify the set of tournament score sequences on signed graphs, generalizing a classical result of Landau. We also study the combinatorics of such tournaments with given score sequence. Specifically, we show that the Coxeter analogues of the interchange graphs introduced by Brualdi and Li remain degree regular. This degree can be interpreted geometrically, in terms of distances in the Coxeter permutahedra studied recently by Ardila, Castillo, Eur and Postnikov.

Abstract:Let $T$ be a tournament with nondecreasing score sequence $R$ and $A$ be its tournament matrix. An upset of $T$ corresponds to an entry above the main diagonal of $A$. Given a feasible score sequence $R$, Fulkerson~(1965) gave a simple recursive construction for a tournament with score sequence $R$ and the minimum number of upsets, and Hacioglu et al. (2019) provided a construction for all of such tournament matrices. Let $U_{\min}(R)$ denote the set of tournament matrices with score sequence $R$ that have minimum number of upsets. Brauldi and Li~(1983) characterized the strong score sequences $R$ ($R$ is strong if a tournament $T$ with score sequence $R$ is strongly connected) with $|U_{\min}(R)|=1$. In this article, we characterize all feasible score sequences $R$ with $|U_{\min}(R)|=1$ and give an explicit formula for the number of the feasible score sequences $R$ with $|U_{\min}(R)|=1$.

Abstract:Given two nonnegative integers n and k withn≥k> 1, a k -hypertournament on n vertices is a pair (V, A), where V is a set of vertices with | V | =n and A is a set of k -tuples of vertices, called arcs, such that for any k -subset S ofV , A contains exactly one of the k!k -tuples whose entries belong to S. We show that a nondecreasing sequence (r1, r2,⋯ , rn) of nonnegative integers is a losing score sequence of a k -hypertournament if and only if for each j(1 ≤j≤n),with equality holding whenj=n. We also show that a nondecreasing sequence (s1,s2 ,⋯ , sn) of nonnegative integers is a score sequence of somek -hypertournament if and only if for each j(1 ≤j≤n),with equality holding whenj=n. Furthermore, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a score sequence of a strong k -hypertournament. The above results generalize the corresponding theorems on tournaments.

Abstract:We give a short proof of a recent result of Claesson, Dukes, Franklín and Stefánsson, that connects tournament score sequences and the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv numbers from additive number theory. We show that this connection is, in fact, an instance of the Lévy-Khintchine formula from probability theory, and highlight how such formulas can be useful in enumerative combinatorics. Our proof combines renewal theory with the representation of score sequences as lattice paths, due to Erdős and Moser in the 1960s. These probabilistic and geometric points of view lead to a simpler proof. A key idea in the original proof and ours is to consider cyclic shifts of score sequences. We observe, however, that this idea is already present in Kleitman's remarks added to one of Moser's final articles in 1968, and in subsequent works by Kleitman. In the same article, Moser conjectured that there are asymptotically $C4^n/n^{5/2}$ many score sequences of length $n$. Combining the arguments in the current work with those in a recent work by the third author, we demonstrate the utility of the Lévy-Khintchine method, by giving a short proof of Moser's conjecture.

ON TOURNAMENTS OF SMALL ORDERS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

Abstract:In this paper, we generate all nonisomorphic tournaments of order at most nine, all nonisomorphic almost regular tournaments of order 10 and all nonisomorphic regular tournaments of order 11. For each of these tournaments, we have given its score-list, connectivity, diameter, the minimal number of feedbacks, automorphisms and spectra. Moreover, we have verified the well-known Kelly's Conjecture for n - 2k + 1 11. And we also determine the n-universal tournaments for n 6. However, several related results are given and some related open problems are raised.

Abstract:We present new algorithms for counting and detecting small tournaments in a given tournament. In particular, it is proved that every tournament on four vertices (there are four) can be detected in $O(n^2)$ time and counted in $O(n^\omega)$ time where $\omega < 2.373$ is the matrix multiplication exponent. It is also proved that any tournament on five vertices (there are $12$) can be counted in $O(n^{\omega+1})$ time. As for lower-bounds, we prove that for almost all $k$-vertex tournaments, the complexity of the detection problem is not easier than the complexity of the corresponding well-studied counting problem for {\em undirected cliques} of order $k-O(\log k)$.

Abstract:We begin by reviewing and proving the basic facts of combinatorial game theory. We then consider scoring games (also known as Milnor games or positional games), focusing on the "fixed-length" games for which all sequences of play terminate after the same number of moves. The theory of fixed-length scoring games is shown to have properties similar to the theory of loopy combinatorial games, with operations similar to onsides and offsides. We give a complete description of the structure of fixed-length scoring games in terms of the class of short partizan games. We also consider fixed-length scoring games taking values in the two-element boolean algebra, and classify these games up to indistinguishability. We then apply these results to analyze some positions in the knotting-unknotting game of Pechenik, Townsend, Henrich, MacNaughton, and Silversmith.

Abstract:A tournament is an orientation of a graph. Vertices are players and edges are games, directed away from the winner. Kannan, Tetali and Vempala and McShine showed that tournaments with given score sequence can be rapidly sampled, via simple random walks on the interchange graphs of Brualdi and Li. These graphs are generated by the cyclically directed triangle, in the sense that traversing an edge corresponds to the reversal of such a triangle in a tournament.

Abstract:We define a natural equivalence relation on collections of cards from the card game SET, and enumerate some of the equivalence classes, vastly generalizing the standard game. On this basis, we describe several alternative games for the SET deck, including the game of STUN, in which the goal is to find three cards with exactly two values in each attribute.

Abstract:The poset of copies of a relational structure ${\mathbb X}$ is the partial order ${\mathbb P} ({\mathbb X} ) := \langle \{ Y \subset X: {\mathbb Y} \cong {\mathbb X}\}, \subset \rangle$ and each similarity of such posets (e.g. isomorphism, forcing equivalence) determines a classification of structures. We consider the countable ultrahomogeneous tournaments: ${\mathbb Q} $ (the rational line), ${\mathbb S} (2)$ (the circular tournament), and ${\mathbb T} ^\infty$ (the random tournament); as well as the ultrahomogeneous digraphs ${\mathbb S} (3)$, ${\mathbb Q} [{\mathbb I}_n]$, ${\mathbb S} (2)[{\mathbb I}_n]$ and ${\mathbb T} ^\infty [{\mathbb I}_n]$ from Cherlin's list. Abstract:A k-hypertournament is a complete k-hypergraph with each k-edge endowed with an orientation, that is, a linear arrangement of the vertices contained in the edge. In a k-hypertournament, the score s(i) (losing score r(i)) of a vertex v(i) is the number of arcs containing v(i) in which v(i) is not the last element (in which v(i) is the last element). The total score of v(i) is defined as t(i) = s(i) - r(i). In this paper we obtain stronger inequalities for the quantities Sigma(i is an element of I)r(i), Sigma(i is an element of I) s(i) and Sigma(i is an element of I) t(i), where I subset of {1, 2, ..., n}. Furthermore, we discuss the case of equality for these inequalities. We also characterize total score sequences of strong k-hypertournaments.

Abstract:A tournament T=(V,A) is called cycle Mengerian (CM) if it satisfies the minimax relation on packing and covering cycles, for every nonnegative integral weight function defined on A. The purpose of this series of two papers is to show that a tournament is CM iff it contains none of four Möbius ladders as a subgraph; such a tournament is referred to as Möbius-free. In the first paper we have given a structural description of all Möbius-free tournaments, and have proved that every CM tournament is Möbius-free. In this second paper we establish the converse by using our structural theorems and linear programming approach.
