Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a class of quadratic Riemannian curvature functionals on closed smooth manifold M of dimension n ⩾ 3 on the space of Riemannian metrics on M consisting of metrics with unit volume. We study the stability of these functionals at the metric with constant sectional curvature as its critical point.

Abstract:By applying the symmetric and trace-free formalism in terms of the irreducible Cartesian tensors, the metric for the external gravitational field of a spatially compact stationary source is provided in $F(X,Y,Z)$ gravity, a generic fourth-order theory of gravity, where $X:=R$ is Ricci scalar, $Y:=R_{\mu\nu}R^{\mu\nu}$ is Ricci square, and $Z:=R_{\mu\nu\rho\sigma}R^{\mu\nu\rho\sigma}$ is Riemann square. A new type of gauge condition is proposed so that the linearized gravitational field equations of $F(X,Y,Z)$ gravity are greatly simplified, and then, the stationary metric in the region exterior to the source is derived. In the process of applying the result, integrations are performed only over the domain occupied by the source. The multipole expansion of the metric potential in $F(X,Y,Z)$ gravity for a spatially compact stationary source is also presented. In the expansion, the corrections of $F(X,Y,Z)$ gravity to General Relativity are Yukawa-like ones, dependent on two characteristic lengths. Two additional sets of mass-type source multipole moments appear in the corrections and the salient feature characterizing them is that the integrations in their expressions are always modulated by a common radial factor related to the source distribution.

We discuss how this can be used as a change of variables in the operator formalism to construct a dual formulation of quantum gravity pertinent in the context of asymptotic safety-like approaches to quantum gravity.

Abstract:We present the algebraic classification of the gravitational field in four-dimensional general metric-affine geometries, thus extending the current results of the literature in the particular framework of Weyl-Cartan geometry by the presence of the traceless nonmetricity tensor. This quantity switches on four of the eleven fundamental parts of the irreducible representation of the curvature tensor under the pseudo-orthogonal group, in such a way that three of them present similar algebraic types as the ones obtained in Weyl-Cartan geometry, whereas the remaining one includes thirty independent components and gives rise to a new algebraic classification. The latter is derived by means of its principal null directions and their levels of alignment, obtaining a total number of sixteen main algebraic types, which can be split into many subtypes. As an immediate application, we determine the algebraic types of the broadest family of static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions with spin, dilation and shear charges in Metric-Affine Gravity.

Scalar curvature for metric spaces: Defining curvature for Quantum Gravity without coordinates

Abstract:Geometrical properties of spacetime are difficult to study in nonperturbative approaches to quantum gravity like Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT), where one uses simplicial manifolds to define the gravitational path integral, instead of Riemannian manifolds. In particular, in CDT one only relies on two mathematical tools, a distance measure and a volume measure. In this paper, we define a notion of scalar curvature, for metric spaces endowed with a volume measure or a random walk, without assuming nor using notions of tensor calculus. Furthermore, we directly define the Ricci scalar, without the need of defining and computing the Riemann or the Ricci tensor a priori. For this, we make use of quantities, like the surface of a geodesic sphere, or the return probability of scalar diffusion processes, that can be computed in these metric spaces, as in a Riemannian manifold, where they receive scalar curvature contributions. Our definitions recover the classical results of scalar curvature when the sets are Riemannian manifolds. We propose seven methods to compute the scalar curvature in these spaces, and we compare their features in natural implementations in discrete spaces. The defined generalized scalar curvatures are easily implemented on discrete spaces, like graphs. We present the results of our definitions on random triangulations of a 2D sphere and plane. Additionally, we show the results of our generalized scalar curvatures on the quantum geometries of 2D CDT, where we find that all our definitions indicate a flat ground state of the gravitational path integral.

Abstract:In this paper, Dirac Quantization of $3D$ gravity in the first-order formalism is attempted where instead of quantizing the connection and triad fields, the connection and the triad 1-forms themselves are quantized. The exterior derivative operator on the space of differential forms is treated as the `time' derivative to compute the momenta conjugate to these 1-forms. This manner of quantization allows one to compute the transition amplitude in $3D$ gravity which has a close, but not exact, match with the transition amplitude computed via LQG techniques. This inconsistency is interpreted as being due to the non-quantizable nature of differential geometry.

Gravitational Energy in Quadratic Curvature Gravities

Abstract:We define the notion of energy, and compute its values, for gravitational systems involving terms quadratic in curvature. While our construction parallels that of ordinary Einstein gravity, there are significant differences both conceptually and concretely. In particular, for D=4, all purely quadratic models admit vacua of arbitrary constant curvature. Their energies, including that of conformal (Weyl) gravity, necessarily vanish in asymptotically flat spaces. Instead, they are proportional to that of the Abbott-Deser (AD) energy expression in constant curvature backgrounds and therefore also proportional to the mass parameter in the corresponding Schwarzschild-(Anti) de Sitter geometries. Combined Einstein-quadratic curvature systems reflect the above results: Absent a cosmological constant term, the only vacuum is flat space, with the usual (ADM) energy and no explicit contributions from the quadratic parts. If there is a Lambda term, then the vacuum is also unique with that Lambda value, and the energy is just the sum of the separate contributions from Einstein and quadratic parts to the AD expression . Finally, we discuss the effects on energy definition of both higher curvature terms and higher dimension.

Abstract:We argue that a consistent coupling of a quantum theory to gravity requires an extension of ordinary `first order' Riemannian geometry to second order Riemannian geometry, which incorporates both a line element and an area element. This extension results in a misalignment between the dimension of the manifold and the dimension of the tangent spaces. In particular, we find that for a 4-dimensional spacetime, tangent spaces become 18-dimensional. We then discuss the construction of physical theories within this framework, which involves the introduction of terms that are quadratic in derivatives in the action. On a flat spacetime, the quadratic sector is perpendicular to the first order sector and only affects the normalization of the path integral, whereas in a curved spacetime the quadratic sector couples to the first order sector. Moreover, we show that, despite the introduction of higher order derivatives, the Ostragradski instability can be avoided, due to an order mixing of the two sectors. Finally, we comment on extensions to higher order geometry and on relations with non-commutative and generalized geometry.

Gravitational collapse in Quadratic Gravity

Abstract:This study explores the gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field within Quadratic Gravity treated as a dimension-four operator Effective Field Theory extension to General Relativity. The additional degrees of freedom associated with the higher derivatives in this theory are removed by an Order Reduction approach, where the truncated expansion nature of the theory is exploited. Through simulations, we find scenarios where solutions remain within the bounds of the Effective Field Theory while displaying significant deviations from General Relativity in the dynamics of curvature invariants during the collapse. Limitations of the approach taken, the Effective Field Theory approximation, and the appearance of instabilities are also discussed.

Explicit formulae for surface gravities in stationary circular axi-symmetric spacetimes

Abstract:Using minimalist assumptions we develop a natural functional decomposition for the spacetime metric, and explicit tractable formulae for the surface gravities, in arbitrary stationary circular (PT symmetric) axisymmetric spacetimes. We relate rigidity results, (the existence of a Killing horizon), and the zeroth law to the absence of curvature singularities at the would-be horizons. These observations are of interest to both observational astrophysicists (modelling the cold, dark, heavy objects at the centre of most spiral galaxies), and to the analogue spacetime community, (wherein the presence of naked singularities is not necessarily deprecated, and the occurrence of non-Killing horizons is relatively common).

Towards a Geodesic Flow Bundle Formalism of General Relativity: Riemannian case

Abstract:Gravity is a phenomenon which arises due to the space-time geometry. The main equations that describe gravity are the Einstein equations. To understand the consequences of these field equations we need to calculate the free particle worldlines to the geometries, which solve these field equations e.g. the Schwarzschild metric solves the Einstein equations and we would need to solve the geodesic equations to this metric. If we were to describe the space-time geometry in terms of geodesics instead of the metric, we could skip the step of solving for the metric and solve for the geodesics directly. In this work we have developed a formalism doing that: we use the bundle of the arclength parametrized geodesics (geodesic flow bundle GFB) from all points in the manifold to describe a Riemannian geometry. Our formalism uses infinitesimal spherical triangles as generating elements, to solve geometric problems. We relate the geodesic flow bundle to Gaussian curvature and develop a method to calculate the geodesics geometrically starting from a Gaussian curvature field. The result amounts to a generalization of the cosine- and sine-laws for constant curvature to varying curvature fields. In this work we restrict ourselves to the Riemannian case and positive curvature fields. We expand the triangulation problem in power series and calculate the main result up to second order. The method itself could be extended to treat more generic cases in particular pseudo-Riemannian geometries which relate directly to Einsteins equations. We test our results against the sphere and perform consistency checks for some examples of varying curvature fields. As a by-product we generalize the notion of integration to products and derive a relation analogue to the main theorem of calculus, for product integrals.

Aspects of higher-curvature gravities with covariant derivatives

Abstract:We study various aspects of higher-curvature theories of gravity built from contractions of the metric, the Riemann tensor and the covariant derivative, $\mathcal{L}(g^{ab},R_{abcd},\nabla_a)$. We characterise the linearized spectrum of these theories and compute the modified Newton potential in the general case. Then, we present the first examples of Generalized Quasi-topological (GQT) gravities involving covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor. We argue that they always have second-order equations on maximally symmetric backgrounds. Focusing on four spacetime dimensions, we find new densities of that type involving eight and ten derivatives of the metric. In the latter case, we find new modifications of the Schwarzschild black hole. These display thermodynamic properties which depart from the ones of polynomial GQT black holes. In particular, the relation between the temperature and the mass of small black holes, $T\sim M^{1/3}$, which universally holds for general polynomial GQT modifications of Einstein gravity, gets modified in the presence of the new density with covariant derivatives to $T\sim M^{3}$. Finally, we consider brane-world gravities induced by Einstein gravity in the AdS bulk. We show that the effective quadratic action for the brane-world theory involving arbitrary high-order terms in the action can be written explicitly in a closed form in terms of Bessel functions. We use this result to compute the propagator of metric perturbations on the brane and its pole structure in various dimensions, always finding infinite towers of ghost modes, as well as tachyons and more exotic modes in some cases.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider some metric-affine Myrzakulov gravity (MG) theories with Gauss-Bonnet scalars. Also we consider the MG theories with the boundary term scalars. Note that these MG theories with the Gauss-Bonnet and boundary term scalars were proposed in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1205.5266" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1205.5266">arXiv:1205.5266</a>]. Some examples of Metric-Affine Gravity (MAG) theories are reviewed in the context of the $F(R,T,Q,{\cal T}, {\cal D})$ type models. Then the generalized MAG theory with the curvature, torsion and nonmetricity (the so-called MG-VIII) was studied. For the FRW spacetime case, in particular, the Lagrangian, Hamilatonian and gravitational equations are obtained. The particular case $F(R,T)=\alpha R+\beta T+\mu Q+\nu{\cal T}$ is investigated in detail. In quantum case, the corresponding Wheeler-DeWitt equation is obtained. Finally, some gravity theories with the curvature, torsion and nonmetricity are presented.

Torsion and Chern-Simons gravity in 4D space-times from a Geometrodynamical four-form

Abstract:The space-time geometry in any inertial frame is described by the line-element $ds^2= \eta_{\mu \nu} dx^\mu dx^\nu$. Now, not only the Minkowski metric $\eta_{\mu \nu} $ is invariant under proper Lorentz transformations, the totally antisymmetric Levi-Civita tensor $e_{\mu \nu \alpha \beta} $ too is. In general relativity (GR), $\eta_{\mu \nu} $ of the flat space-time gets generalized to a dynamical, space-time dependent metric tensor $ g_{\mu \nu} $ that characterizes a curved space-time geometry. In the present study, it is put forward that the flat space-time Levi-Civita tensor gets elevated to a dynamical four-form field $\tilde {w} $ in curved space-time manifolds, i.e. $e_{\mu \nu \alpha \beta} \rightarrow w_{\mu \nu \alpha \beta} (x) = \phi (x) \ e_{\mu \nu \alpha \beta} $, so that $\tilde {w} = {1\over {4!}} \ w_{\mu \nu \rho \sigma} \ \tilde{d} x^\mu \wedge \tilde{d} x^\nu \wedge \tilde{d} x^\rho \wedge \tilde{d} x^\sigma$. It is shown that this geometrodynamical four-form field extends GR by leading naturally to a torsion in the theory as well as to a Chern-Simons gravity. It is demonstrated that the scalar-density $\phi (x)$ associated with $\tilde {w} $ may be used to construct a generalized exterior derivative that converts a p-form density to a (p+1)-form density of identical weight. It is argued that the scalar-density $\phi (x)$ associated with $\tilde {w}$ corresponds to an axion-like pseudo-scalar field in the Minkowski space-time, and that it can also masquerade as dark matter. Thereafter, we provide a simple semi-classical analysis in which a self-gravitating Bose-Einstein condensate of such ultra-light pseudo-scalars leads to the formation of a supermassive black hole. A brief analysis of propagation of weak gravitational waves in the presence of $\tilde{w} $ is also considered in this article.
