Abstract:We first study the discrete Schr\odinger equations with analytic potentials given by a class of transformations. It is shown that if the coupling number is large, then its logarithm equals approximately to the Lyapunov exponents. When the transformation becomes to be the skew-shift, we prove that the Lyapunov exponent is week H\older continuous, and the spectrum satisfies Anderson Localization and contains large intervals. Moreover, all of these conclusions for the skew-shift Schr\odinger equations are non-perturbative.

Abstract:By using the methods including Weyl ’s difference principle,large deviation theorem, avalanche principle and so on,we considered the problem of the Lyapunov exponent positivity and continuity of the discrete analytic Schr?dinger operator defined by the high order skew shift Tω.We proved that if the potential energy factor was big enough,then the Lyapunov exponent of the system was positive and week H?lder continuity.This results extended the conclusion about the Lyapunov exponent positivity and continuity with the lower order skew shift to the one with the high order skew shift.

Abstract:An effective scheme within two displaced bosonic operators with equal positive and negative displacements is extended to study qubit-oscillator systems analytically in a unified way. Many previous analytical treatments, such as generalized rotating-wave approximation (GRWA) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 173601 (2007)] and an expansion in the qubit tunneling matrix element in the deep strong coupling regime [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 263603 (2010)] can be recovered straightforwardly within the present scheme. Moreover, further improving GRWA and the extension to the finite-bias case are implemented easily. The algebraic formulae for the eigensolutions are then derived explicitly and uniquely, which work well in a wide range of the coupling strengths, detunings, and static bias including the recent experimentally accessible parameters. The dynamics of the qubit for an oscillator in the ground state is also studied. At the experimentally accessible coupling regime, GRWA can always work well. When the coupling is enhanced to the intermediate regime, only the improving GRWA can give the correct description, while the result of GRWA shows strong deviations. The previous Van Vleck perturbation theory is not valid to describe the dynamics in the present-day experimentally accessible regime, except for the strongly biased cases.

Abstract:Quantum speed limits (QSLs) impose fundamental constraints on the evolutionspeed of quantum systems. Traditionally, the Mandelstam-Tamm (MT) andMargolus-Levitin (ML) bounds have been widely employed, relying on the standarddeviation and mean of energy distribution to define the QSLs. However, theseuniversal bounds only offer loose restrictions on the quantum evolution. Herewe introduce the generalized ML bounds, which prove to be more stringent inconstraining dynamic evolution, by utilizing moments of energy spectra ofarbitrary orders, even noninteger orders. To validate our findings, we conductexperiments in a superconducting circuit, where we have the capability toprepare a wide range of quantum photonic states and rigorously test thesebounds by measuring the evolution of the system and its photon statistics usingquantum state tomography. While, in general, the MT bound is effective forshort-time evolution, we identify specific parameter regimes where either theMT or the generalized ML bounds suffice to constrain the entire evolution. Ourfindings not only establish new criteria for estimating QSLs but alsosubstantially enhance our comprehension of the dynamic evolution of quantumsystems.

Abstract:We prove upper bounds on outside probabilities for generic non-autonomous Schrödinger operators on lattices of arbitrary dimension. Our approach is based on a combination of commutator method originated in scattering theory and novel monotonicity estimate for certain mollified asymptotic observables that track the spacetime localization of evolving states. Sub-ballistic upper bounds are obtained, assuming that momentum vanishes sufficiently fast in the front of the wavepackets. A special case gives a refinement of the general ballistic upper bound of Radin-Simon's, showing that the evolution of wavepackets are effectively confined to a strictly linear light cone with explicitly bounded slope. All results apply to long-range Hamiltonian with polynomial decaying off-diagonal terms and can be extended, via a frozen-coefficient argument, to generic nonlinear Schrödinger equations on lattices.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the semilinear wave equations with the inverse-square potential. By transferring the original equation to a "fractional dimensional" wave equation and analyzing the properties of its fundamental solution, we establish a long-time existence result, for sufficiently small, spherically symmetric initial data. Together with the previously known blow-up result, we determine the critical exponent which divides the global existence and finite time blow-up. Moreover, the sharp lower bounds of the lifespan are obtained, except for certain borderline case. In addition, our technology allows us to handle an extreme case for the potential, which has hardly been discussed in literature.
Interpolation between modified logarithmic Sobolev and Poincare inequalities for quantum Markovian dynamics

Abstract:We define the quantum $p$-divergences and introduce Beckner's inequalities for primitive quantum Markov semigroups on a finite-dimensional matrix algebra satisfying the detailed balance condition. Such inequalities quantify the convergence rate of the quantum dynamics in the noncommutative $L_p$-norm. We obtain a number of implications between Beckner's inequalities and other quantum functional inequalities, as well as the hypercontractivity. In particular, we show that the quantum Beckner's inequalities interpolate between the Sobolev-type inequalities and the Poincaré inequality in a sharp way. We provide a uniform lower bound for the Beckner constant $\alpha_p$ in terms of the spectral gap and establish the stability of $\alpha_p$ with respect to the invariant state. As applications, we compute the Beckner constant for the depolarizing semigroup and discuss the mixing time. For symmetric quantum Markov semigroups, we derive the moment estimate, which further implies a concentration inequality. We introduce a new class of quantum transport distances $W_{2,p}$ interpolating the quantum 2-Wasserstein distance by Carlen and Maas [J. Funct. Anal. 273(5), 1810-1869 (2017)] and a noncommutative $\dot{H}^{-1}$ Sobolev distance. We show that the quantum Markov semigroup with $\sigma$-GNS detailed balance is the gradient flow of a quantum $p$-divergence with respect to the metric $W_{2,p}$. We prove that the set of quantum states equipped with $W_{2,p}$ is a complete geodesic space. We then consider the associated entropic Ricci curvature lower bound via the geodesic convexity of $p$-divergence, and obtain an HWI-type interpolation inequality. This enables us to prove that the positive Ricci curvature implies the quantum Beckner's inequality, from which a transport cost and Poincaré inequalities can follow.

Abstract:We prove eigenvalue bounds for Schrödinger operator $-\Delta_g+V$ on compact manifolds with complex potentials $V$. The bounds depend only on an $L^q$-norm of the potential, and they are shown to be optimal, in a certain sense, on the round sphere and more general Zoll manifolds. These bounds are natural analogues of Frank's \cite{MR2820160} results in the Euclidean case.

Abstract:Mathematical Models and Methods in Applied Sciences, Ahead of Print. We establish optimal error bounds on time-splitting methods for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with low regularity potential and typical power-type nonlinearity [math], where [math] is the density with [math] the wave function and [math] the exponent of the nonlinearity. For the first-order Lie–Trotter time-splitting method, optimal [math]-norm error bound is proved for [math]-potential and [math], and optimal [math]-norm error bound is obtained for [math]-potential and [math]. For the second-order Strang time-splitting method, optimal [math]-norm error bound is established for [math]-potential and [math], and optimal [math]-norm error bound is proved for [math]-potential and [math] (or [math]). Compared to those error estimates of time-splitting methods in the literature, our optimal error bounds either improve the convergence rates under the same regularity assumptions or significantly relax the regularity requirements on potential and nonlinearity for optimal convergence orders. A key ingredient in our proof is to adopt a new technique called regularity compensation oscillation (RCO), where low frequency modes are analyzed by phase cancellation, and high frequency modes are estimated by regularity of the solution. Extensive numerical results are reported to confirm our error estimates and to demonstrate that they are sharp.

Spreading Estimates for Quantum Walks on the Integer Lattice via Power-Law Bounds on Transfer Matrices

Abstract:We discuss spreading estimates for dynamical systems given by the iteration of an extended CMV matrix. Using a connection due to Cantero--Grünbaum--Moral--Velázquez, this enables us to study spreading rates for quantum walks in one spatial dimension. We prove several general results which establish quantitative upper and lower bounds on the spreading of a quantum walk in terms of estimates on a pair of associated matrix cocycles. To demonstrate the power and utility of these methods, we apply them to several concrete cases of interest. In the case where the coins are distributed according to an element of the Fibonacci subshift, we are able to rather completely describe the dynamics in a particular asymptotic regime. As a pleasant consequence, this supplies the first concrete example of a quantum walk with anomalous transport, to the best of our knowldege. We also prove ballistic transport for a quantum walk whose coins are periodically distributed.

Abstract:We continue the program first initiated in [Geom. Funct. Anal. 26, 288-305 (2016)] and develop a modification of the technique introduced in that paper to study the spectral asymptotics, namely the Riesz means and eigenvalue counting functions, of functional difference operators $\smash{H_0 = \mathcal F^{-1} M_{\cosh(\xi)} \mathcal F}$ with potentials of the form $\smash{W(x) = \lvert{x\rvert}^pe^{\lvert{x\rvert}^\beta}}$ for either $\beta = 0$ and $p > 0$ or $\beta \in (0, 2]$ and $p \geq 0$. We provide a new method for studying general potentials which includes the potentials studied in [Geom. Funct. Anal. 26, 288-305 (2016)] and [J. Math. Phys. 60, 103505 (2019)]. The proof involves dilating the variance of the gaussian defining the coherent state transform in a controlled manner preserving the expected asymptotics.

Quantum Lower Bounds by Sample-to-Query Lifting

Abstract:The polynomial method by Beals, Buhrman, Cleve, Mosca, and de Wolf (FOCS 1998) and the adversary method by Ambainis (STOC 2000) have been shown to be powerful in proving quantum query lower bounds for a wide variety of problems. In this paper, we propose an arguably new method for proving quantum query lower bounds by a quantum sample-to-query lifting theorem, which is from an information theory perspective. Using this method, we obtain the following new results: 1. A quadratic relation between quantum sample and query complexities regarding quantum property testing, which is optimal and saturated by quantum state discrimination. 2. A matching lower bound $\widetilde \Omega(\beta)$ for quantum Gibbs sampling at inverse temperature $\beta$, showing that the quantum Gibbs sampler by Gilyén, Su, Low, and Wiebe (STOC 2019) is optimal. 3. A new lower bound $\widetilde \Omega(1/\sqrt{\Delta})$ for the entanglement entropy problem with gap $\Delta$, which was recently studied by She and Yuen (ITCS 2023). 4. A series of quantum query lower bounds for matrix spectrum testing, based on the sample lower bounds for quantum state spectrum testing by O'Donnell and Wright (STOC 2015). In addition, we also provide unified proofs for some known lower bounds that have been proven previously via different techniques, including those for phase/amplitude estimation and Hamiltonian simulation.

Quantum space-time Poincaré inequality for Lindblad dynamics

Abstract:We investigate the mixing properties of primitive hypocoercive Lindblad dynamics. By extending the variational framework originally developed for underdamped Langevin dynamics, we derive fully explicit and constructive exponential decay estimates for the convergence in the noncommutative $L^2$-norm. Our analysis relies on establishing a quantum analog of space-time Poincaré inequalities. To complement these hypocoercive estimates, we also analyze the limiting behavior of the spectral gap for Lindblad dynamics with a large coherent contribution, providing sharper convergence rate estimates in this asymptotic regime. A number of concrete examples are provided as applications of our theoretical results.

Quantum Lower Bounds for Finding Stationary Points of Nonconvex Functions

Abstract:Quantum algorithms for optimization problems are of general interest. Despite recent progress in classical lower bounds for nonconvex optimization under different settings and quantum lower bounds for convex optimization, quantum lower bounds for nonconvex optimization are still widely open. In this paper, we conduct a systematic study of quantum query lower bounds on finding $\epsilon$-approximate stationary points of nonconvex functions, and we consider the following two important settings: 1) having access to $p$-th order derivatives; or 2) having access to stochastic gradients. The classical query lower bounds is $\Omega\big(\epsilon^{-\frac{1+p}{p}}\big)$ regarding the first setting, and $\Omega(\epsilon^{-4})$ regarding the second setting (or $\Omega(\epsilon^{-3})$ if the stochastic gradient function is mean-squared smooth). In this paper, we extend all these classical lower bounds to the quantum setting. They match the classical algorithmic results respectively, demonstrating that there is no quantum speedup for finding $\epsilon$-stationary points of nonconvex functions with $p$-th order derivative inputs or stochastic gradient inputs, whether with or without the mean-squared smoothness assumption. Technically, our quantum lower bounds are obtained by showing that the sequential nature of classical hard instances in all these settings also applies to quantum queries, preventing any quantum speedup other than revealing information of the stationary points sequentially.

Intertwining operators beyond the Stark Effect

Abstract:The main mathematical manifestation of the Stark effect in quantum mechanics is the shift and the formation of clusters of eigenvalues when a spherical Hamiltonian is perturbed by lower order terms. Understanding this mechanism turned out to be fundamental in the description of the large-time asymptotics of the associated Schrödinger groups and can be responsible for the lack of dispersion in Fanelli, Felli, Fontelos and Primo [Comm. Math. Phys., 324(2013), 1033-1067; 337(2015), 1515-1533]. Recently, Miao, Su, and Zheng introduced in [Tran. Amer. Math. Soc., 376(2023), 1739--1797] a family of spectrally projected intertwining operators, reminiscent of the Kato's wave operators, in the case of constant perturbations on the sphere (inverse-square potential), and also proved their boundedness in $L^p$. Our aim is to establish a general framework in which some suitable intertwining operators can be defined also for non constant spherical perturbations in space dimensions 2 and higher. In addition, we investigate the mapping properties between $L^p$-spaces of these operators. In 2D, we prove a complete result, for the Schrödinger Hamiltonian with a (fixed) magnetic potential an electric potential, both scaling critical, allowing us to prove dispersive estimates, uniform resolvent estimates, and $L^p$-bounds of Bochner--Riesz means. In higher dimensions, apart from recovering the example of inverse-square potential, we can conjecture a complete result in presence of some symmetries (zonal potentials), and open some interesting spectral problems concerning the asymptotics of eigenfunctions.

Abstract:Motivated by linear Schrodinger equations with almost periodic potentials and phase transitions over almost periodic lattices, we introduce the so-called skew-product quasi-flows (SPQFs), which may admit both temporal and spatial discontinuity. In this paper we establish two basic theorems for SPQFs. One is an extension of the Bogoliubov-Krylov theorem for the existence of invariant Borel probability measures and the other is the uniform ergodic theorems. As applications, it will be shown that such a Schrodinger equation admits a well-defined rotation number.
Optimizing the Fundamental Eigenvalue Gap of Quantum Graphs

Abstract:We study the problem of minimizing or maximizing the fundamental spectral gap of Schrödinger operators on metric graphs with either a convex potential or a ``single-well'' potential on an appropriate specified subset. (In the case of metric trees, such a subset can be the entire graph.) In the convex case we find that the minimizing and maximizing potentials are piecewise linear with only a finite number of points of non-smoothness, but give examples showing that the optimal potentials need not be constant. This is a significant departure from the usual scenarios on intervals and domains where the constant potential is typically minimizing. In the single-well case we show that the optimal potentials are piecewise constant with a finite number of jumps, and in both cases give an explicit estimate on the number of points of non-smoothness, respectively jumps, the minimizing potential can have. Furthermore, we show that, unlike on domains, it is not generally possible to find nontrivial bounds on the fundamental gap in terms of the diameter of the graph alone, within the given classes.
