Abstract:We review Yafaev's approach to asymptotic completeness for systems of particles mutually interacting with short-range potentials. The theory is based on computation of commutators with time-independent (mostly bounded) observables yielding a sufficient supply of Kato smoothness bounds.

Abstract:Within the class of Dereziński–Enss pair-potentials which includes Coulomb potentials and for which asymptotic completeness is known (Dereziński in Ann Math 38:427–476, 1993), we show that all entries of the N -body quantum scattering matrix have a well-defined meaning at any given non-threshold energy. As a function of the energy parameter the scattering matrix is weakly continuous. This result generalizes a similar one obtained previously by Yafaev for systems of particles interacting by short-range potentials (Yafaev in Integr Equ Oper Theory 21:93–126, 1995). As for Yafaev's paper we do not make any assumption on the decay of channel bound states. The main part of the proof consists in establishing a number of Kato-smoothness bounds needed for justifying a new formula for the scattering matrix. Similarly we construct and show strong continuity of channel wave matrices for all non-threshold energies. Away from a set of measure zero we show that the scattering and channel wave matrices constitute a well-defined 'scattering theory', in particular at such energies the scattering matrix is unitary, strongly continuous and characterized by asymptotics of generalized eigenfunctions of minimal growth.

Abstract:We consider a gas of N bosons with interactions in the mean-field scaling regime. We review a recent proof of the asymptotic expansion of its spectrum and eigenstates and two applications of this result, namely the derivation of an Edgeworth expansion for fluctuations of one-body operators and the computation of the binding energy of an inhomogeneous Bose gas to any order. Finally, we collect related results for the dynamics of the weakly interacting Bose gas and for the regularized Nelson model.

Abstract:Asymptotic velocity is defined as the Cesàro limit of velocity. As such, its existence has been proven for bounded interaction potentials. This is known to be wrong in celestial mechanics with four or more bodies. Here we show for a class of pair potentials including the homogeneous ones of degree -a for 0<a<2, that asymptotic velocities exist for up to four bodies, dimension three or larger, for any energy and almost all initial conditions on the energy surface.

Abstract:The thermodynamics and microstructure of confined fluids with small particle number are best described using the canonical ensemble. However, practical calculations can usually only be performed in the grand-canonical ensemble, which can introduce unphysical artifacts. We employ the method of asymptotics to transform grand-canonical observables to the canonical ensemble, where the former can be conveniently obtained using the classical density functional theory of inhomogeneous fluids. By formulating the ensemble transformation as a contour integral in the complex fugacity plane we reveal the influence of the Yang-Lee zeros in determining the form and convergence properties of the asymptotic series. The theory is employed to develop expansions for the canonical partition function and the canonical one-body density. Numerical investigations are then performed using an exactly soluble one-dimensional model system of hard-rods.

Abstract:We give a complete study of the asymptotic behavior of a simple model of alignment of unit vectors, both at the level of particles, which corresponds to a system of coupled differential equations, and at the continuum level, under the form of an aggregation equation on the sphere. We prove unconditional convergence towards an aligned asymptotic state. In the cases of the differential system and of symmetric initial data for the partial differential equation, we provide precise rates of convergence.
An asymptotic framework for gravitational scattering

Abstract:Asymptotically flat spacetimes have been studied in five separate regions: future/past timelike infinity $i^\pm$, future/past null infinity $\mathcal{I}^\pm$, and spatial infinity $i^0$. We formulate assumptions and definitions such that the five infinities share a single Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) group of asymptotic symmetries and associated charges. We show how individual ingoing/outgoing massive bodies may be ascribed initial/final BMS charges and derive global conservation laws stating that the change in total charge is balanced by the corresponding radiative flux. This framework provides a foundation for the study of asymptotically flat spacetimes containing ingoing and outgoing massive bodies, i.e., for generalized gravitational scattering. Among the new implications are rigorous definitions for quantities like initial/final spin, scattering angle, and impact parameter in multi-body spacetimes, without the use of any preferred background structure.

Kinetic equations for systems with long-range interactions: a unified description

Abstract:We complete the existing literature on the kinetic theory of systems with long-range interactions. Starting from the BBGKY hierarchy, or using projection operator technics or a quasilinear theory, a general kinetic equation can be derived when collective effects are neglected. This equation (which is not well-known) applies to possibly spatially inhomogeneous systems, which is specific to systems with long-range interactions. Interestingly, the structure of this kinetic equation bears a clear physical meaning in terms of generalized Kubo relations. Furthermore, this equation takes a very similar form for stellar systems and two-dimensional point vortices providing therefore a unified description of the kinetic theory of these systems. If we assume that the system is spatially homogeneous (or axisymmetric for point vortices), this equation can be simplified and reduces to the Landau equation (or its counterpart for point vortices). Our formalism thus offers a simple derivation of Landau-type equations. We also use this general formalism to derive a kinetic equation, written in angle-action variables, describing spatially inhomogeneous systems with long-range interactions. This new derivation solves the shortcomings of our previous derivation [P.H. Chavanis, Physica A 377, 469 (2007)]. Finally, we consider a test particle approach and derive general expressions for the diffusion and friction (or drift) coefficients of a test particle evolving in a bath of field particles. We make contact with the expressions previously obtained in the literature. As an application of the kinetic theory, we argue that the relaxation time is shorter for inhomogeneous (or high-dimensional) systems than for homogeneous (or low-dimensional) systems because there are potentially more resonances.

Abstract:We study a system of Skorokhod stochastic differential equations modeling the pairwise dispersion (in spatial dimension ) of inertial particles transported by a rough turbulent flow with Hölder exponent . Under the assumption that is sufficiently small, we use Lyapunov methods and control theory to show that the Markovian system is nonexplosive and has a unique, exponentially attractive invariant probability measure. Furthermore, our Lyapunov construction is radially sharp and gives partial confirmation on a predicted asymptotic behavior with respect to the Hölder exponent h of the invariant probability measure. A physical interpretation of the asymptotics is that intermittent clustering is weakened when the carrier flow is sufficiently rough.

Abstract:We investigate the thermodynamic properties of a novel class of gauge-Yukawa theories that have recently been shown to be completely asymptotically safe, because their short-distance behavior is determined by the presence of an interacting fixed point. Not only do all the coupling constants freeze at a constant and calculable value in the ultraviolet, their values can even be made arbitrarily small for an appropriate choice of the ratio Nc/Nf of fermion colors and flavors in the Veneziano limit. Thus, a perturbative treatment can be justified. We compute the pressure, entropy density, and thermal degrees of freedom of these theories to next-to-next-to-leading order in the coupling constants.

Complete asymptotic analysis of low energy scattering for Schrodinger operators with a short-range potential

Abstract:Recent work by Hintz--Vasy provides a partial asymptotic analysis of the low-energy limit of scattering for Schrodinger operators with a short-range potential. Using a slight refinement of Hintz's algorithm, we complete the asymptotic analysis by providing full asymptotic expansions in every possible asymptotic regime. Moreover, the analysis is done in any dimension $d\geq 3$, for any asymptotically conic manifold, and we keep track of partial multipole expansions.

Abstract:The evolution of a cloud of particles in a compressible fluid can be modeled with a Vlasov–Fokker–Planck equation for the distribution function of the particles coupled with Navier–Stokes or Euler equations for the density and velocity of the fluid. Formal calculations have established the convergence of solution to the mesoscopic model to solutions to the macroscopic Navier–Stokes or Euler model coupled with a Smoluchowski equation as the ratio of the settling time for the microscopic velocity fluctuation of the particles to the characteristic macroscopic time scale goes to zero. This paper provides a rigorous asymptotic analysis for a homogeneous mesoscopic fluid–particle interaction model for particles dispersed in a compressible fluid is provided for the bubbling regime. A relative entropy inequality for a mixed hyperbolic/parabolic system of equations is employed.
Weak convergence of the empirical measure for the Keller-Segel model in both subcritical and critical cases

Abstract:We show the weak convergence, up to extraction of a subsequence, of the empirical measure for the Keller-Segel system of particles in both subcritical and critical cases, for general initial conditions. This particle system consists of $N$ planar Brownian motions interacting through a Coulombian attractive force, which is quite singular. In the subcritical case, a stronger result has been established by Bresch-Jabin-Wang \cite{bjw} at the price of two simplifications: the whole space $\rr^2$ is replaced by a torus and the initial condition is assumed to be regular. In the subcritical case, our proof is fairly straightforward: we use a {\it two particles} moment argument, which shows that particles do not aggregate in finite time, uniformly in the number of particles. The critical case requires more work.

Abstract:We introduce an asymptotic formula for calculating quantum mechanical and quantum theoretical models with caustics, like the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio(NJL) model. This asymptotic formula is given by the form attached the extra term, which suppresses the divergence induced because of caustics, to the leading term of the WKB approximation. This formula guarantees validity of the mean field approximation of models with caustics.

Abstract:The framework of trans-Planckian asymptotic safety has been shown to generate phenomenological predictions in the Standard Model and in some of its simple new physics extensions. A heuristic approach is often adopted, which bypasses the functional renormalization group by relying on a parametric description of quantum gravity with universal coefficients that are eventually obtained from low-energy observations. Within this approach a few simplifying approximations are typically introduced, including the computation of matter renormalization group equations at 1~loop, an arbitrary definition of the position of the Planck scale at $10^{19}$ GeV, and an instantaneous decoupling of gravitational interactions below the Planck scale. In this work we systematically investigate, both analytically and numerically, the impact of dropping each of those approximations on the predictions for certain particle physics scenarios. In particular we study two extensions of the Standard Model, the gauged $B-L$ model and the leptoquark $S_3$ model, for which we determine a set of irrelevant gauge and Yukawa couplings. In each model, we present numerical and analytical estimates of the uncertainties associated with the predictions from asymptotic safety.

Abstract:Reviews in Mathematical Physics, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we study the spectral and scattering theory on the Hamiltonians which govern one-body quantum systems in crossed constant electric and magnetic fields. As one of the spectral features of the Hamiltonians, we show the absence of bound states of theirs under some appropriate conditions on the potentials. Moreover, by using the limiting absorption principle for the Hamiltonians, we give a simplified proof of the asymptotic completeness in short-range scattering.

Abstract:The asymptotic behavior of solutions to the second order elliptic equations in exterior domains is studied. In particular, under the assumption that the solution belongs to the Lorentz space $L^{p,q}$ or the weak Lebesgue space $L^{p,\infty}$ with certain conditions on the coefficients, we give natural and an almost sharp pointwise estimate of the solution at spacial infinity. The proof is based on the argument by Korobkov--Pileckas--Russo [4], in which the decay property of the solution to the vorticity equation of the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations was studied.
