Abstract:The dispersed bubble experiences an impact of flow-focusing from the outer viscous liquid, and may break into satellite bubbles after flowing through the narrower section. We show that the number of satellite bubbles can be characterized by a phase diagram that depends on the capillary number and the Weber number. The number of satellite bubbles can be estimated through the Tgrow (the growth time of the daughter bubble), Tpinch (the pinch-off time of the daughter bubble), and Tpass (the time the initial microbubble need to pass the pore). We defined N = Tpass/(Tpinch + Tgrow) as the dimensionless time and the critical condition: N ∼ 1 to evaluate the bubble breakup. Our work shows that the breakup of the microbubble or droplet through a sudden narrowing joint is predictable and controllable.

Abstract:The multi-bubble isoperimetric conjectures in $n$-dimensional Euclidean and spherical spaces from the 1990's assert that standard bubbles uniquely minimize total perimeter among all $q-1$ bubbles enclosing prescribed volume, for any $q \leq n+2$. The double-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{R}^3$ was confirmed by Hutchings-Morgan-Ritoré-Ros (and later extended to $\mathbb{R}^n$). The double-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{S}^n$ ($n \geq 2$) and the triple- and quadruple- bubble conjectures on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathbb{S}^n$ (for $n \geq 3$ and $n \geq 4$, respectively) were recently confirmed in our previous work, but the approach employed there does not seem to allow extending these results further. In this work, we confirm the quintuple-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{S}^n$ ($n \geq 5$), and as a consequence, by approximation, also the quintuple-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \geq 5$) but without the uniqueness assertion. Moreover, we resolve the conjectures on $\mathbb{S}^n$ and on $\mathbb{R}^n$ (without uniqueness) for all $q \leq n+1$, \emph{conditioned} on the assumption that the singularities which appear at the meeting locus of several bubbles obey a higher-dimensional analogue of Plateau's laws. Another scenario we can deal with is when the bubbles are full-dimensional (``in general position"), or arrange in some good lower-dimensional configurations. To this end, we develop the spectral theory of the corresponding Jacobi operator (finding analogies with the quantum-graph formalism), and a new method for deforming the bubbles into a favorable configuration. As a by-product of our analysis, we show that the Jacobi operator on a minimizing configuration always has index precisely $q-1$. Several compelling conjectures of PDE flavor are proposed, which would allow extending our results to all $q \leq n+1$ unconditionally.

Abstract:A Coupled Level Set and Volume Of Fluid (CLSVOF) method is presented in this article for simulating the multi-bubble rising problem. This method can accurately conserve mass and capture gas/liquid moving interface to understated bubbles’ evolution in detail. In addition to capturing bubbles’ evolution, the present CLSVOF method is also combined with the projection method of flow field solver, which can provide two-phase flow field solutions. Comparisons with reference solutions have also been carried out for the single-bubble rising case. It is shown that the results obtained using the present method agree well with reference solutions, even where there are fewer grid points. The mass conservation performance is compared with the numerical result of the level set method. The present two-phase flow model is further adopted to study the high density ratio on bubbles’ dynamic and kinematic characteristics.

Abstract:We construct covering maps from infinite blowups of the n-dimensional Sierpinski gasket SG(n) to certain compact fractafolds based on SG(n). These maps are fractal analogs of the usual covering maps from the line to the circle. The construction extends work of the second author in the case n = 2, but a different method of proof is needed, which amounts to solving a Sudoku-type puzzle. We can use the covering maps to define the notion of periodic function on the blowups. We give a characterization of these periodic functions and describe the analog of Fourier series expansions. We study covering maps onto quotient fractalfolds. Finally, we show that such covering maps fail to exist for many other highly symmetric fractals.

Abstract:At a certain infamous tea party, the Mad Hatter posed the following riddle: why is a raven like a writing-desk? We do not answer this question. Instead, we solve a related nonsense query: why is a soap bubble like a railway? The answer is that both minimize over graphs. We give a self-contained introduction to graphs and minimization, starting with minimal networks on the Euclidean plane and ending with close-packed structures for three-dimensional foams. Along the way, we touch on algorithms and complexity, the physics of computation, curvature, chemistry, space-filling polyhedra, and bees from other dimensions. The only prerequisites are high school geometry, some algebra, and a spirit of adventure. These notes should therefore be suitable for high school enrichment and bedside reading.

Abstract:We combine experiments and theoretical derivations to study the evolution of a stretched soap bubble and compare it with an open film to highlight the effect of volume conservation. We identify a critical length for both surfaces, beyond which a bottleneck develops in the middle and begins to shrink irreversibly, ultimately pinching off into multiple compartments. Before leaving the equilibrium regime, surface energy minimization governs the shape, which can be addressed theoretically via the variational method. In contrast to open films, soap bubble volume conservation introduces a Lagrange multiplier, analogous to a pressure difference, mediating long-range shape evolution. By examining how boundary constraints influence deformation, we contrast the bubble's convex-to-concave transition with the behavior of soap films under similar conditions. Our analysis of equilibrium and breakup regimes reveals critical differences between bubble and film stability profiles, shedding light on universal behaviors in non-equilibrium fluid mechanics, with implications for biological and material sciences.

Abstract:In this paper we first review the covering space method with constrained BV functions for solving the classical Plateau's problem. Next, we carefully analyze some interesting examples of soap films compatible with the covering space method: in particular, the case of a soap film only partially wetting a space curve, a soap film spanning a cubical frame but having a large tunnel, aa soap film that retracts onto its boundary, hence not modelable with the Reifenberg method, and various soap films spanning an octahedral frame.

The Structure of Isoperimetric Bubbles on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathbb{S}^n$

Abstract:The multi-bubble isoperimetric conjecture in $n$-dimensional Euclidean and spherical spaces from the 1990's asserts that standard bubbles uniquely minimize total perimeter among all $q-1$ bubbles enclosing prescribed volume, for any $q \leq n+2$. The double-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{R}^3$ was confirmed in 2000 by Hutchings-Morgan-Ritoré-Ros, and is nowadays fully resolved for all $n \geq 2$. The double-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{S}^2$ and triple-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{R}^2$ have also been resolved, but all other cases are in general open. We confirm the conjecture on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and on $\mathbb{S}^n$ for all $q \leq \min(5,n+1)$, namely: the double-bubble conjectures for $n \geq 2$, the triple-bubble conjectures for $n \geq 3$ and the quadruple-bubble conjectures for $n \geq 4$. In fact, we show that for all $q \leq n+1$, a minimizing cluster necessarily has spherical interfaces, and after stereographic projection to $\mathbb{S}^n$, its cells are obtained as the Voronoi cells of $q$ affine-functions, or equivalently, as the intersection with $\mathbb{S}^n$ of convex polyhedra in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. Moreover, the cells (including the unbounded one) are necessarily connected and intersect a common hyperplane of symmetry, resolving a conjecture of Heppes. We also show for all $q \leq n+1$ that a minimizer with non-empty interfaces between all pairs of cells is necessarily a standard bubble. The proof makes crucial use of considering $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathbb{S}^n$ in tandem and of Möbius geometry and conformal Killing fields; it does not rely on establishing a PDI for the isoperimetric profile as in the Gaussian setting, which seems out of reach in the present one.

Classical solutions to the soap film capillarity problem for plane boundaries

Abstract:We study the soap film capillarity problem, in which soap films are modeled as sets of least perimeter among those having prescribed (small) volume and satisfying a topological spanning condition. When the given boundary is the closed tubular neighborhood in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of a smooth Jordan curve (or, more generally, the closed tubular neighborhood in $\mathbb{R}^d$ of a smooth embedding of $\mathbb{S}^{d-2}$ in a hyperplane), we prove existence and uniqueness of classical minimizers, for which the collapsing phenomenon does not occur. We show that the boundary of the unique minimizer is the union of two symmetric smooth normal graphs over a portion of the plane; the graphs have positive constant mean curvature bounded linearly in terms of the volume parameter, and meet the boundary of the tubular neighbourhood orthogonally. Moreover, we prove uniform bounds on the sectional curvatures in order to show that the boundaries of solutions corresponding to varying volumes are ordered monotonically and produce a foliation of space by constant mean curvature hypersurfaces.

Abstract:In two dimensional foams at equilibrium, triangular bubbles can be freely exchanged with 3-fold stars --three edges ending at a central vertex. This theorem is deduced here from Moukarzel's duality. Moreover, to probe the method, a few related properties are established: under slow gas diffusion, T2 processes are continuous for triangles but not for other types of bubbles. In general, the gas flow results in different configurations in the presence of a triangle than in the presence of a star.

Dynamics of Soap Bubble Inflation

Abstract:Bubbles have always captivated our curiosity with their aesthetics and complexities alike. While the act of blowing bubbles is familiar to everyone, the underlying physics of these fleeting spheres often eludes reasoning. In this letter, we discuss the dynamics of inflating a soap bubble using controlled airflow through a film-coated nozzle. We assess and predict the rate of inflation by varying the source pressure. Visualising the previously unexplored internal flow reveals that air enters the bubble as a round jet, emerging from the nozzle opening and impinges on the expanding concave bubble interface to form a toroidal vortex. Several scaling laws of the associated vortical flow spanning the entire bubble and the vortex core are reported. The observed dynamics of this bubble-confined vortex ring formation indicate universality in certain aspects when compared to the free laminar vortex rings.

Abstract:Two-dimensional liquid foam systems comprised of an odd number N of bubbles arranged in a staircase configuration are studied as they are packed within a confined straight channel. Energy minimization is employed to characterize the permitted topology and geometry of the system at equilibrium. It is known that in an infinite staircase, bubble films are flat. The configuration for a finite number of bubbles, however, deviates from that of an infinite staircase at the edges. It is known that films near the edges are not flat and structures with a few bubbles (up to N = 3 ) are well characterized. To study what happens as more bubbles are added, and how the behaviour approaches that of an infinite staircase, structures comprised of N = [ 5 , 7 , ... ] bubbles are studied here. For these N values, minimum and maximum bubble areas are found that can pack in a staircase configuration within a straight channel. However, for an infinite staircase and also for N = 3 , there are maximum areas, but no minima. Staircases with very short films, which make the structure susceptible to break in various ways, are also identified.

Abstract:In contrast to a soap bubble, an antibubble is a liquid globule surrounded by a thin film of air. The collapse behavior of an antibubble is studied using a high-speed video camera. It is found that the retraction velocity of the thin air film of antibubbles depends on the thickness of the air film, e, the surface tension coefficient σ, etc., and varies linearly with (σ/ρe)(1/2), according to theoretical analysis and experimental observations. During the collapse of the antibubble, many tiny bubbles can be formed at the rim of the air film due to the Rayleigh instability. In most cases, a larger bubble will emerge finally, which holds most of the volume of the air film.

Abstract:.The physical properties of an ensemble of tightly packed particles like bubbles, drops or solid grains are controlled by their interactions. For the case of bubbles and drops it has recently been shown theoretically and computationally that their interactions cannot generally be represented by pair-wise additive potentials, as is commonly done for simulations of soft grain packings. This has important consequences for the mechanical properties of foams and emulsions, especially for strongly deformed bubbles or droplets well above the jamming point. Here we provide the first experimental confirmation of this prediction by quantifying the interactions between bubbles in simple model foams consisting of trains of equal-volume bubbles confined in square capillaries. The obtained interaction laws agree quantitatively with Surface Evolver simulations and are well described by an analytically derived expression based on the recently developed non-pairwise interaction model of Höhler et al. [Soft Matter, 2017, 13,(7):1371], based on Morse-Witten theory. While all experiments are done at Bond numbers sufficiently low for the hydrostatic pressure variation across one bubble to be negligible, we provide the full analysis taking into account gravity in the appendix for the interested reader. Even though the article focuses on foams, all results directly apply to the case of emulsions.
