Abstract:The dispersed bubble experiences an impact of flow-focusing from the outer viscous liquid, and may break into satellite bubbles after flowing through the narrower section. We show that the number of satellite bubbles can be characterized by a phase diagram that depends on the capillary number and the Weber number. The number of satellite bubbles can be estimated through the Tgrow (the growth time of the daughter bubble), Tpinch (the pinch-off time of the daughter bubble), and Tpass (the time the initial microbubble need to pass the pore). We defined N = Tpass/(Tpinch + Tgrow) as the dimensionless time and the critical condition: N ∼ 1 to evaluate the bubble breakup. Our work shows that the breakup of the microbubble or droplet through a sudden narrowing joint is predictable and controllable.

Abstract:The deformation of a gas bubble in uniform flow is numerically investigated using a dynamic body force method. In our parametric range, bubble steady shape is the superposition of two types of deformation: O-type deformation (corresponding to oblate eccentricity) and D-type deformation (corresponding to fore-aft symmetry). The calculation results show that O-type deformation mainly depends on surface tension, so the aspect ratio is mainly correlated with We (ρldeUslip2/σ). D-type deformation is mainly depends on the competition between pressure and viscous normal stress on bubble surface. Therefore, bubble fore-aft symmetry has a more significant correlation with Re (ρldeUslip/μl). We find that the critical Re of fore-aft symmetry slightly increases as We increases, and the interval of critical Re becomes narrower. When We exceeds 7, bubble will loss its fore-aft symmetry. A new power-law correlation of aspect ratio related to We and a phase diagram of bubble symmetry mapped to Re–We are given to predict bubble shape.

Abstract:Surface bubbles are present in many industrial processes and in nature, as well as in CO$_2$ beverage. They have motivated many theoretical, numerical and experimental works. This paper presents the current knowledge on the physics of surface bubbles lifetime and shows the diversity of mechanisms at play that depend on the properties of the bath, the interfaces and the ambient air. In particular, we explore the role of drainage and evaporation on film thinning. We highlight the existence of two different scenarios depending on whether the film cap ruptures at large or small thickness compared to the thickness at which van der Waals interaction come in to play.

Abstract:Bubbles and droplets are ubiquitous in many areas of engineering, including microfluidics where they can serve as microreactors for screening of chemical reactions. They are often formed out of a constriction (a microfluidic channel or a cylindrical tube) by blowing a given volume of gas into a liquid phase. It is obviously crucial to be able to control their size, which is not always easy due to the coupling between the volume of the bubble and the gas pressure induced by the Laplace law. In this paper, we examine the size and formation dynamics of soap bubbles blown from a cylindrical tube, which is the paradigm geometry for bubble and droplet formation. To do so, one end of the tube is closed by a soap film, while the other end is connected to a large reservoir of variable volume filled with gas. To inflate the bubble, we reduce the volume of the reservoir, which mimics air inflation through the lung diaphragm or the flow-rate-driven bubble formation in microfluidics geometry such as flow-focusing. As the volume of the reservoir decreases, the soap film curves and takes the form of a spherical cap with a smaller and smaller radius of curvature, which leads to the increase of the gas pressure in the reservoir, according to Laplace's law. This quasistatic process continues until a critical pressure is reached for which the bubble is quasihemispherical. Beyond this pressure, the film undergoes a rapid topological transformation and swells very rapidly (in less than 100 ms) until it reaches its final volume. We describe this instability in particular by showing that this unstable regime appears when a dimensionless number, which depends on the volume of the reservoir, the radius of the tube, surface tension, and external pressure, reaches a critical value. Using a quasistatic model that we solve analytically, we predict the bubble growth dynamics and the amplitude of the unstable height increase for any reservoir volume and constriction size. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.8.053602 ©2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:The collapse of a bubble in free flow field has been investigated theoretically and numerically.The Rayleigh equation is adopted to derive a new analytical solution of the evolution of a spherical bubble.A three-dimensional simulation of the behavior of a gas-filled bubble based on the Volume of Fluid(VOF) method is also performed,considering the effects of surface tension,viscosity and gas compressibility.The numerical result of the volume evolution of the bubble is in good agreement with the analytical solution during its first-stage collapse.Numerical results also show that the volume of the gas-filled bubble reaches its minimum value and then rebounds.Dramatic changes of bubble shape,field velocity and pressure occur in the vicinity of the turning point.

Abstract:The Rayleigh-Plesset equation is the fundamental model of bubble dynamics and is widely used in the study of cavitation mechanisms. Since cavitation bubble often occurs at the micro-scale, the effect of surface tension will have an important influence on the bubble motion. Based on the Sundman transformation and Weierstrass elliptic function theory, this paper studies the Rayleigh-Plesset equation considering surface tension, and establishes the parametric theoretical solutions of vapor bubble and gas bubble respectively. The results show that the vapor-bubble and gas-bubble dynamic equations can be solved theoretically. Further, based on the theoretical solutions, the effects of the surface tension on the motion of vapor bubbles and gas bubbles are studied in detail. For the two types of bubbles, the influence of the surface tension on the bubble motion will increase gradually as the scale of the bubble gets smaller. Especially when the bubble scale is reduced to 10 μm, the effect of the surface tension becomes too significant to be negligible.

Abstract:The classical theory of Laplace is not suitable for describing the behavior of microscopic bubbles. The theory of second gradient fluids (which are able to exert shear stresses in equilibrium conditions) allows us to obtain a new expression for surface tension and radius of these bubbles in terms of functionals of the chemical potential. This relationship allows us to generalize the results of Cahn-Hilliard and Tolman.

Abstract:In contrast to a soap bubble, an antibubble is a liquid globule surrounded by a thin film of air. The collapse behavior of an antibubble is studied using a high-speed video camera. It is found that the retraction velocity of the thin air film of antibubbles depends on the thickness of the air film, e, the surface tension coefficient σ, etc., and varies linearly with (σ/ρe)(1/2), according to theoretical analysis and experimental observations. During the collapse of the antibubble, many tiny bubbles can be formed at the rim of the air film due to the Rayleigh instability. In most cases, a larger bubble will emerge finally, which holds most of the volume of the air film.

Abstract:The formation of a single bubble from an orifice in a solid surface, submerged in an in- compressible, viscous Newtonian liquid, is simulated. The finite element method is used to capture the multiscale physics associated with the problem and to track the evolution of the free surface explicitly. The results are compared to a recent experimental analysis and then used to obtain the global characteristics of the process, the formation time and volume of the bubble, for a range of orifice radii; Ohnesorge numbers, which combine the material parameters of the liquid; and volumetric gas flow rates. These benchmark calculations, for the parameter space of interest, are then utilised to validate a selection of scaling laws found in the literature for two regimes of bubble formation, the regimes of low and high gas flow rates.

Abstract:In this work, we established a novel theory for the dynamics of oscillating bubbles such as cavitation bubbles, underwater explosion bubbles, and air bubbles. For the first time, we proposed bubble dynamics equations that can simultaneously take into consideration the effects of boundaries, bubble interaction, ambient flow field, gravity, bubble migration, fluid compressibility, viscosity, and surface tension while maintaining a unified and elegant mathematical form. The present theory unifies different classical bubble equations such as the Rayleigh-Plesset equation, the Gilmore equation, and the Keller-Miksis equation. Furthermore, we validated the theory with experimental data of bubbles with a variety in scales, sources, boundaries, and ambient conditions and showed the advantages of our theory over the classical theoretical models, followed by a discussion on the applicability of the present theory based on a comparison to simulation results with different numerical methods. Finally, as a demonstration of the potential of our theory, we modeled the complex multi-cycle bubble interaction with wide ranges of energy and phase differences and gained new physical insights into inter-bubble energy transfer and coupling of bubble-induced pressure waves.

Plateau Bubbles and the Quintuple Bubble Theorem on $\mathbb{S}^n$

Abstract:The multi-bubble isoperimetric conjectures in $n$-dimensional Euclidean and spherical spaces from the 1990's assert that standard bubbles uniquely minimize total perimeter among all $q-1$ bubbles enclosing prescribed volume, for any $q \leq n+2$. The double-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{R}^3$ was confirmed by Hutchings-Morgan-Ritoré-Ros (and later extended to $\mathbb{R}^n$). The double-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{S}^n$ ($n \geq 2$) and the triple- and quadruple- bubble conjectures on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathbb{S}^n$ (for $n \geq 3$ and $n \geq 4$, respectively) were recently confirmed in our previous work, but the approach employed there does not seem to allow extending these results further. In this work, we confirm the quintuple-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{S}^n$ ($n \geq 5$), and as a consequence, by approximation, also the quintuple-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \geq 5$) but without the uniqueness assertion. Moreover, we resolve the conjectures on $\mathbb{S}^n$ and on $\mathbb{R}^n$ (without uniqueness) for all $q \leq n+1$, \emph{conditioned} on the assumption that the singularities which appear at the meeting locus of several bubbles obey a higher-dimensional analogue of Plateau's laws. Another scenario we can deal with is when the bubbles are full-dimensional (``in general position"), or arrange in some good lower-dimensional configurations. To this end, we develop the spectral theory of the corresponding Jacobi operator (finding analogies with the quantum-graph formalism), and a new method for deforming the bubbles into a favorable configuration. As a by-product of our analysis, we show that the Jacobi operator on a minimizing configuration always has index precisely $q-1$. Several compelling conjectures of PDE flavor are proposed, which would allow extending our results to all $q \leq n+1$ unconditionally.

Abstract:We show that smaller gas bubbles grow at the expense of larger bubbles and all bubbles approach the same surface curvature after long times in porous media. This anticoarsening effect is contrary to typical Ostwald ripening and leads to uniformly sized bubbles in a homogeneous medium. Evolution dynamics of bubble populations were measured, and mathematical models were developed that fit the experimental data well. Ostwald ripening is shown to be the driving mechanism in this anticoarsening phenomenon; however, the relationship between surface curvature and bubble size determined by the pore-throat geometric confinement reverses the ripening direction.
Surface Tension Effects on the Behavior of Two Rising Bubbles

Abstract:In the inviscid and incompressible fluid flow regime, surface tension effects on the behavior of two initially spherical bubbles with same size rising axisymmetrically in an infinite and initially stationary liquid are investigated numerically with the VOF method. The numerical experiments are performed for two bubbles with two different bubble distances. The ratio of gas density to liquid density is 0.001, which is close to the case of air bubbles rising in water. In the case of Dis = 2.5, where Dis is defined as the ratio of the distance between the bubble centroids to the radius of the bubble, it is found from numerical experiments that there exist four critical Weber numbers We1, We2, We3 and We4, which are in between 10 and 100, 3 and 4, 1.5 and 1.8, and 0.2 and 0.3, respectively. In the case of Dis = 2.3, similar phenomena also appear but the corresponding four critical Weber numbers are lower than those in the case of Dis = 2.5. The mechanism of the above phenomena is analyzed theoretically and numerically.
Juggling bubbles in square capillaries: an experimental proof of non-pairwise bubble interactions

Abstract:.The physical properties of an ensemble of tightly packed particles like bubbles, drops or solid grains are controlled by their interactions. For the case of bubbles and drops it has recently been shown theoretically and computationally that their interactions cannot generally be represented by pair-wise additive potentials, as is commonly done for simulations of soft grain packings. This has important consequences for the mechanical properties of foams and emulsions, especially for strongly deformed bubbles or droplets well above the jamming point. Here we provide the first experimental confirmation of this prediction by quantifying the interactions between bubbles in simple model foams consisting of trains of equal-volume bubbles confined in square capillaries. The obtained interaction laws agree quantitatively with Surface Evolver simulations and are well described by an analytically derived expression based on the recently developed non-pairwise interaction model of Höhler et al. [Soft Matter, 2017, 13,(7):1371], based on Morse-Witten theory. While all experiments are done at Bond numbers sufficiently low for the hydrostatic pressure variation across one bubble to be negligible, we provide the full analysis taking into account gravity in the appendix for the interested reader. Even though the article focuses on foams, all results directly apply to the case of emulsions.

Abstract:Bubbles have always captivated our curiosity with their aesthetics and complexities alike. While the act of blowing bubbles is familiar to everyone, the underlying physics of these fleeting spheres often eludes reasoning. In this letter, we discuss the dynamics of inflating a soap bubble using controlled airflow through a film-coated nozzle. We assess and predict the rate of inflation by varying the source pressure. Visualising the previously unexplored internal flow reveals that air enters the bubble as a round jet, emerging from the nozzle opening and impinges on the expanding concave bubble interface to form a toroidal vortex. Several scaling laws of the associated vortical flow spanning the entire bubble and the vortex core are reported. The observed dynamics of this bubble-confined vortex ring formation indicate universality in certain aspects when compared to the free laminar vortex rings.

Abstract:Abstract We study experimentally the growth of an isolated gas bubble in a slightly supersaturated water–CO2 solution at 6 atm pressure. In contrast to what was found in previous experiments at higher supersaturation, the time evolution of the bubble radius differs noticeably from existing theoretical solutions. We trace the differences back to several combined effects of the concentration boundary layer around the bubble, which we disentangle in this work. In the early phase, the interaction with the surface on which the bubble grows slows down the process. In contrast, in the final phase, before bubble detachment, the growth rate is enhanced by the onset of density-driven convection. We also show that the bubble growth is affected by prior growth and detachment events, though they are up to 15 min apart.

Abstract:Liquid simulations for computer animation often avoid simulating the air phase to reduce computational costs and ensure good conditioning of the linear systems required to enforce incompressibility. However, this free surface assumption leads to an inability to realistically treat bubbles: submerged gaps in the liquid are interpreted as empty voids that immediately collapse. To address this shortcoming, we present an efficient, practical, and conceptually simple approach to augment free surface flows with negligible density bubbles. Our method adds a new constraint to each disconnected air region that guarantees zero net flux across its entire surface, and requires neither simulating both phases nor reformulating into stream function variables. Implementation of the method requires only minor modifications to the pressure solve of a standard grid-based fluid solver, and yields linear systems that remain sparse and symmetric positive definite. In our evaluations, solving the modified pressure projection system took no more than 10% longer than the corresponding free surface solve. We demonstrate the method's effectiveness and flexibility by incorporating it into commercial fluid animation software and using it to generate a variety of dynamic bubble scenarios showcasing glugging effects, viscous and inviscid bubbles, interactions with irregularly-shaped and moving solid boundaries, and surface tension effects.

Abstract:Bubble formation and detachment at a submerged orifice exists widely in both daily life and academic research, and the influence of solid surface on bubble formation and detachment has also been extensively investigated. For example, it has been observed that the bubble on a hydrophobic surface is larger than the one on a hydrophilic surface. However, this phenomenon is not sufficiently explained in existing literature. To explain it, we redefine the capillary force at the orifice edge and the adhesive force between bubble and solid. Subsequently, we are able to establish an approach that quantitatively explains the relation between bubble volume and surface wettability. In addition, we also suggest an alternative mechanism of bubble pinch-off. In our opinion, the formation of bubble neck during pinch-off may be due to three-phase equilibrium at the orifice edge, and the breakup of bubble neck may result from the stretching action of the upward buoyancy force and the downward capillary force.
