Abstract:We present an integral expression of the Catalan numbers, based on Féaux' integral representation of $\log\left[\Gamma(x)\right]$, $\Gamma$ being the usual Gamma function. The obtained formula may be the starting point of the derivation of new relations involving central binomial coefficients or Catalan numbers.

Abstract:We present two integral representations of the logarithm of the Glaisher-Kinkelin constant. The calculations are based on definite integral expressions of $\log\Gamma(x)$, $\Gamma$ being the usual Gamma function, due respectively to Féaux and Kummer. The connection between the second formula and an infinite series expansion of the Glaisher-Kinkelin constant is also outlined.

Abstract:In this article, we use the Touchard identity in order to obtain new integral representations for Catalan numbers. The main idea consists in combining the identity with a known integral representation and resorting to the binomial theorem. The same procedure is applied to a variant of the Touchard identity proposed by Callan a few years ago. The method presented here can be generalized to derive additional integral representations from known ones, provided that the latter have a well-suited form and lend themselves to an analytical summation under the integral sign.

On an upper bound for central binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers

Abstract:Recently, Agievich proposed an interesting upper bound on binomial coefficients in the de Moivre-Laplace form. In this article, we show that the latter bound, in the specific case of a central binomial coefficient, is larger than the one proposed by Sasvari and obtained using the Binet formula for the Gamma function. In addition, we provide the expression of the next-order bound and apply it to Catalan numbers $C_n$. The bounds are very close to the exact value, the difference decreasing with $n$ and with the order of the upper bound.

Abstract:We present two integral representations of the logarithm of the Glaisher-Kinkelin constant. Both are based on a definite integral of $\ln[\Gamma(x + 1)]$, $\Gamma$ being the usual Gamma function. The first one relies on an integral representation of $\ln[\Gamma(x + 1)]$ due to Binet, and the second one results from the so-called Malmstén formula. The numerical evaluation is easier with the latter expression than with the former.

Abstract:Li et al. give an integral formula for the Catalan-Qi number of the second kind. They show that this integral can be written as a summation with double factorials. In this paper the integral is reduced to a product of the Catalan number and a hypergeometric function. This hypergeometric function can be written as an associated Legendre polynomial of the first kind. There are also connections with the incomplete Beta function and the Gegenbauer polynomials. In the last section a related integral is calculated.

Expression of Farhi's integral in terms of known mathematical constants

Abstract:In an interesting article entitled ``A curious formula related to the Euler Gamma function'', Bakir Farhi posed the open question of whether it was possible to obtain an expression of $$ \boldsymbol{\eta}=2\int_0^1\log\Gamma(x)\,\cdot\sin(2\pi x)\,\mathrm{d}x=0.7687478924\dots $$ in terms of the known mathematical constants as $\pi$, $\log\pi$, $\log 2$, $\Gamma(1/4)$, $e$, etc. In the present work, we show that $$ \boldsymbol{\eta}=\frac{1}{\pi}\left[\gamma+\log(2\pi)\right], $$ where $\gamma$ is the usual Euler-Mascheroni constant, and provide two different proofs, the first one involving the Glaisher-Kinkelin constant, and the second one based on the Malmstén integral representation of $\log\Gamma(x)$. The resulting formula can also be obtained directly from the knowledge of the Fourier series expansion of $\log\Gamma(x)$.

Abstract:We present new proofs of eight integral representations of the Catalan numbers. Then, we create analogous integral representations of the Motzkin numbers and obtain new results. Most integral representations of counting sequences found in the literature are proved by using advanced mathematical techniques. All integral representations in this paper are proved by using standard techniques from integral calculus. Thus, we provide a more simplistic approach of proving integral representations of the Catalan and Motzkin numbers.

Abstract:This note is about the observation that the various transition formulas between bases of trigonometric polynomials can be expressed in terms binomial coefficients. More specifically, we write the entries of the Chebyshev matrices $ T$ and $ U$ in terms of binomial coefficients. We remark that the inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ T$ correspond to classical power reduction formulas for trigonometric functions. Therefore the entries of $ T^{-1}$ are expressible in terms of binomial coefficients and powers of two. The inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ U$ appear in power reduction formulas involving the Catalan triangles. We could not spot them in the literature. As a corollary the Catalan triangles are interpreted as inverses of rather natural matrices of binomial coefficients. We explain the matrix inversions in terms of Riordan arrays. We solve the integral $ \int _{0}^{2\pi }\cos^{2m}( x)\sin^{2n}( x) dx$ and deduce a hypergeometric identity from the Fourier expansion of $\cos^{2m}(x)$ and $ \sin^{2n}( x)$. As a corollary we prove that super Catalan numbers are integers. We emphasize that from the point of view of these base changes between the trigonometric polynomials it is more natural to work with $2\cos(x)$ and $2\sin(x)$ instead of $\cos(x)$ and $\sin(x)$, since the transition matrices become invertible over the integers. We do a similar analysis for the spread polynomials. This enables us to make a conjecture of Goh and Wildberger more precise. In this exposition we give a mostly self-contained account of the matter, the prerequisites just being four semesters of calculus, linear algebra, elementary complex variables and the residue theorem.

Abstract:We propose formulas for the large $N$ expansion of the generating function of connected correlators of the $\beta$-deformed Gaussian and Wishart-Laguerre matrix models. We show that our proposal satisfies the known transformation properties under the exchange of $\beta$ with $1/\beta$ and, using Virasoro constraints, we derive a recursion formula for the coefficients of the expansion. In the undeformed limit $\beta=1$, these coefficients are integers and they have the combinatorial interpretation of generalized Catalan numbers. For generic $\beta$, we define the higher genus Catalan polynomials $C_{g,\nu}(\beta)$ whose coefficients are integer numbers.

Abstract:We analyze the combinatorics behind the operation of taking the logarithm of the generating function $G_k$ for $k^\text{th}$ generalized Catalan numbers. We provide combinatorial interpretations in terms of lattice paths and in terms of tree graphs. Using explicit bijections, we are able to recover known closed expressions for the coefficients of $\log G_k$ by purely combinatorial means of enumeration. The non-algebraic proof easily generalizes to higher powers $\log^a G_k$, $a\geq 2$.

Abstract:We present an exposition on the Fuss--Catalan numbers, which are a generalization of the well known Catalan numbers. The literature on the subject is scattered (especially for the case of multiple independent parameters, as will be explained in the text), with overlapping definitions by different authors and duplication of proofs. This paper collects the main theorems and identities, with a consistent notation. Contact is made with the works of numerous authors, including the early works of Lambert and Euler. We demonstrate the application of the formalism to solve algebraic equations by infinite series. Our main result in this context is a new necessary and sufficient formula for the domain of absolute convergence of the series solutions of algebraic equations, which corrects and extends previous work in the field. Some historical material is placed in an Appendix.

Abstract:In this article we derive, using the Lagrange inversion theorem and applying twice the Faà di Bruno formula, an expression of the minimum of the Gamma function $\Gamma$ as an expansion in powers of the Euler-Mascheroni constant $\gamma$. The result can be expressed in terms of values the Riemann zeta function $\zeta$ of integer arguments, since the multiple derivative of the digamma function $\psi$ evaluated in $1$ is precisely proportional to the zeta function. The first terms (up to $\gamma^6$) were provided in order to address the convergence of the series. Applying the Lagrange inversion theorem at the value $3/2$ yields more accurate results, although less elegant formulas, in particular because the digamma function evaluated in $3/2$ does not simplify.
