Abstract:We prove the Weyl law for the volume spectrum for $1$-cycles in $n$-dimensional manifolds which was conjectured by Gromov. We follow the strategy of Guth and Liokumovich of obtaining the Weyl law from parametric versions of the coarea inequality and the isoperimetric inequality. A version of the later for families of $0$-cycles is shown in this article. We also obtain approximation results by $\delta$-localized families, which are used to prove the parametric inequalities.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the general area-modulus inequality$\\operatorname{area}(K)\\leq\\operatorname{area}(D){\\rm~e}^{-4\\pi\\operatorname{mod}(A)},$where $K$ is a full regular compact set in the plane, $D$ is a bounded simply connected domain containing $K$ and $A=D\\backslash~K$.Here the equality holds if and only if $A$ is a round annulus.Then we establish the area-capacity-modulus inequality$\\operatorname{area}(K)\\leq\\pi\\operatorname{cap}(K)^2{\\rm~e}^{2L-4\\pi\\operatorname{mod}(\\Lambda)}$for full regular compact set $K$ in the plane, where $L$ is the maximal critical value of the Greenfunction induced by $K$ and $\\Lambda$ is the tree (in set theory) induced by $K$.Here the equality holds if and only if $K$ is a closed disk or $\\operatorname{mod}(\\Lambda)=\\infty$.Using this inequality, we obtain an upper bound for the area of the filledJulia set $K(f)$ for the monic complex polynomial $f$ of degree $d$. Abstract:The aim of this paper is to provide a self-contained proof of a general case of the coarea inequality, also known as the Eilenberg inequality. The result is known, but we are not aware of any place that a proof would be written with all details. The known proof is based on a difficult result of Davies. Our proof is elementary and does not use Davies' theorem. Instead we use an elegant argument that we learned from Nazarov through MathOverflow. We also obtain some generalizations of the coarea inequality.

Abstract:In this short note, we provide a quantitative global Poincaré inequality for one forms on a closed Riemannian four manifold, in terms of an upper bound on the diameter, a positive lower bound on the volume, and a two-sided bound on Ricci curvature. This seems to be the first non-trivial result giving such an inequality without any higher curvature assumptions. The proof is based on a Hodge theoretic result on orbifolds, a comparison for fundamental groups, and a spectral convergence with respect to Gromov-Hausdorff convergence, via a degeneration result to orbifolds by Anderson.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the statement: ``The (Generalized) Hodge Conjecture holds for codimension-two cycles on a smooth projective variety $X$" is a birationally invariant statement, that is, if the statement is true for $X$, it is also true for all smooth varieties $X'$ which are birationally equivalent to $X$. We also prove the analogous result for 1-cycles. As direct corollaries, the Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimension less than or equal to five, and, the Generalized Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimension less than or equal to four.

Abstract:A special type of coarea inequality is proved for compositions of intrinsically Lipschitz mappings of Carnot groups with projections along horizontal vector fields. It is proved that the equality is achieved for mappings with finite codistortion and mappings on the Heisenberg group.

Abstract:Given an algebraic curve $X$ of genus $\ge 3$, one can construct two algebraic $1$-cycles, the Ceresa cycle and the Gross-Kudla-Schoen modified diagonal cycle, each living in the Jacobian of $X$ and the triple product $X \times X \times X$ respectively. These two cycles are homologically trivial but are of infinite order in their corresponding Chow groups for a very general curve over $\mathbb{C}$. From the work of S-W Zhang, for a fixed curve these two cycles are non-torsion in their corresponding Chow groups if and only if one of them is. In this paper, we prove that the Ceresa and Gross-Kudla-Schoen cycles associated to a modular curve $X$ are non-torsion in the corresponding Chow groups when $X=\Gamma \backslash \overline{\mathbb{H}}$ for certain congruence subgroups $\Gamma\subset {\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We obtain the result by studying a pullback formula for special divisors by the diagonal map $X \hookrightarrow X \times X$.

Abstract:We prove the local Kudla–Rapoport conjecture, which is a precise identity between the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on unitary Rapoport–Zink spaces and the derivatives of local representation densities of hermitian forms. As a first application, we prove the global Kudla–Rapoport conjecture, which relates the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on unitary Shimura varieties and the central derivatives of the Fourier coefficients of incoherent Eisenstein series. Combining previous results of Liu and Garcia–Sankaran, we also prove cases of the arithmetic Siegel–Weil formula in any dimension.

Abstract:Hutchings (J Modern Dyn 10:511–539, 2016) used embedded contact homology to show the following for area-preserving disc diffeomorphisms that are a rotation near the boundary of the disc: If the asymptotic mean action on the boundary is greater than the Calabi invariant, then the infimum of the mean action of the periodic points is less than or equal to the Calabi invariant. In this article, we extend this to all area-preserving disc diffeomorphisms. Our strategy is to extend the diffeomorphism to a larger disc with precise properties and apply Hutchings' theorem. As an application, we compute the Calabi invariant of all smooth pseudo-rotations.

Abstract:We introduce and study the notion of universally defined cycles of smooth varieties of dimension $d$, and prove that they are given by polynomials in the Chern classes. A similar result is proved for universally defined cycles on products of smooth varieties. We also state a conjectural explicit form for universally defined cycles on powers of smooth varieties, and provide some steps towards establishing it.

Abstract:In this article, we prove a $p$-adic analogue of the local invariant cycle theorem for $H^2$ in mixed characteristics. As a result, for a smooth projective variety $X$ over a $p$-adic local field $K$ with a proper flat regular model $\mathcal{X}$ over $O_K$, we show that the natural map $Br(\mathcal{X})\rightarrow Br(X_{\bar{K}})^{G_K}$ has a finite kernel and a finite cokernel. And we prove that the natural map $Hom(Br(X)/Br(K)+Br(\mathcal{X}), \mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}) \rightarrow Alb_X(K)$ has a finite kernel and a finite cokernel, generalizing Lichtenbaum's duality between Brauer groups and Jacobians for curves to arbitrary dimensions.

Heights and periods of algebraic cycles in families

Abstract:We consider the Beilinson-Bloch heights and Abel-Jacobian periods of homologically trivial Chow cycles in families. For the Beilinson-Bloch heights, we show that for any $g\ge 3$, we can construct a Zariski open dense subset $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{amp}}$ of $\mathcal{M}_g$, the coarse moduli of curves of genus $g$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, such that the heights of Ceresa cycles and Gross-Schoen cycles over $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{amp}}$ have a lower bound and satisfy the Northcott property. For the Abel-Jacobi periods, we prove that the Ceresa and Gross-Schoen cycle over every non-$\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ point in $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{amp}}$ is non-torsion. We also prove results and make conjectures for any family $X \rightarrow S$ of smooth projective varieties and homologically trivial cocycles $Z$ defined over a number field. Using the Betti strata, we construct a Zariski open subset $S^{\mathrm{amp}}$ of $S_{\mathbb{C}}$ over which $Z_s$ is non-torsion for all transcendental points $s$ and prove a criterion for $S^{\mathrm{amp}}$ to be dense. We conjecture the rationality of $S^{\mathrm{amp}}$ and also conjecture that $S^{\mathrm{amp}}$ is precisely the open locus on which the Beilinson-Bloch height of $Z_s$ has a lower bound and satisfies the Northcott property.

Abstract:We analyze Weierstrass cycles and tautological rings in moduli spaces of smooth algebraic curves and in moduli spaces of integral algebraic curves with embedded disks with special attention to moduli spaces of curves having genus less than or equal to 6. In particular, we show that our general formula gives a good estimate for the dimension of Weierstrass cycles for low genera.

Abstract:In 1986, Kato set up a framework of conjectures relating (higher) $0$-cycles and étale cohomology for smooth projective schemes over finite fields or rings of integers in local fields through the homology of so-called Kato complexes. In analogy, we develop a framework of conjectures for $1$-cycles on smooth projective rationally connected varieties over algebraically closed fields and for families of such varieties over henselian discrete valuation rings with algebraically closed fields. This is partly motivated by results of Colliot-Thélène-Voisin [3] in dimension $3$. We prove some special cases building on recent results of Kollár-Tian [16].

Abstract:We show that a conjecture by Lawson holds, that is, the inclusion from the Chow variety $C_{p,d}(P^n)$ of all effective algebraic p-cycles of degree d in n-dimensional projective space to the space of effective algebraic p-cycles is 2d-connected. As a result, the homotopy and homology groups of $C_{p,d}(P^n)$ are calculated up to 2d. We also show an analogous statement for Chow variety $C_{p,d}(\P^n)$ over algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic and compute their etale homotopy groups up to 2d.
Vanishing criteria for Ceresa cycles

Abstract:Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve, and let $J$ be its Jacobian. We prove vanishing criteria for the Ceresa cycle $\kappa(C) \in \mathrm{CH}_1(J)\otimes \mathbb{Q}$ in the Chow group of 1-cycles on $J$. Namely, $(A)$ If $\mathrm{H}_{\mathrm{prim}}^3(J)^{\mathrm{Aut}(C)} = 0$, then $\kappa(C)$ vanishes; $(B)$ If $\mathrm{H}^0(J, \Omega_J^3)^{\mathrm{Aut}(C)} = 0$ and the Hodge conjecture holds, then $\kappa(C)$ vanishes modulo algebraic equivalence. We then study the first interesting case where $(B)$ holds but $(A)$ does not, namely the case of Picard curves $C \colon y^3 = x^4 + ax^2 + bx + c$. Using work of Schoen on the Hodge conjecture, we show that the Ceresa cycle of a Picard curve is torsion in the Griffiths group. Moreover, we determine exactly when it is torsion in the Chow group. As a byproduct, we show that there are infinitely many plane quartic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with torsion Ceresa cycle (in fact, there is a one parameter family of such curves). Finally, we determine which automorphism group strata are contained in the vanishing locus of the universal Ceresa cycle over $\mathcal{M}_3$.
