Abstract:A special type of coarea inequality is proved for compositions of intrinsically Lipschitz mappings of Carnot groups with projections along horizontal vector fields. It is proved that the equality is achieved for mappings with finite codistortion and mappings on the Heisenberg group.

Abstract:For the intrinsically Lipschitz mappings defined on classes of measurable subsets of Carnot groups of arbitrary depth and acting to Carnot groups with sub-Lorentzian structure, we obtain a sub-Lorentzian analog of the area formula and in particular introduce a suitable definition of Hausdorff measure for the images of measurable sets incorporating the details of their structure.

Abstract:The Morse-Sard theorem requires that a mapping v: R-n -> R-m is of class C-k, k > max(n - m, 0). In 1957 Dubovitskii generalized this result by proving that almost all level sets for a C-k mapping have H-s-negligible intersection with its critical set, where s = max(n - m - k + 1,0). Here the critical set, or m-critical set is defined as Z(v,m) = {x is an element of R-n : rank del v(x) < m}. Another generalisation was obtained independently by Dubovitskii and Federer in 1966, namely for C-k mappings v : R-n -> R-d and integers m <= d they proved that the set of m-critical values v(Z(v,m)) is H-qo-negligible for q(o), = m - 1 + n-m+1/k. They also established the sharpness of these results within the C-k category.Here we prove that Dubovitskii's theorem can be generalized to the case of continuous mappings of the Sobolev-Lorentz class W-p,1(k)(R-n, R-d), p = n/k (this is the minimal integrability assumption that guarantees the continuity of mappings). In this situation the mappings need not to be everywhere differentiable and in order to handle the set of nondifferentiability points, we establish for such mappings an analog of the Luzin N-property with respect to lower dimensional Hausdorff content. Finally, we formulate and prove a bridge theorem that includes all the above results as particular cases. As a limiting case in this bridge theorem we also establish a new coarea type formula: if E degrees subset of {x is an element of R-n : rank del v(x) <= m}, thenintegral(E) J(m)v(x) dx = integral(Rd) Hn-m (E boolean AND v(-1) (y)) dH(m)(y).The mapping v is R-d-valued, with arbitrary d, and the formula is obtained without any restrictions on the image v(R-n) (such as m-rectifiability or sigma-finiteness with respect to the m-Hausdorff measure). These last results are new also for smooth mappings, but are presented here in the general Sobolev context. The proofs of the results are based on our previous joint papers with J. Abstract:The aim of this paper is to provide a self-contained proof of a general case of the coarea inequality, also known as the Eilenberg inequality. The result is known, but we are not aware of any place that a proof would be written with all details. The known proof is based on a difficult result of Davies. Our proof is elementary and does not use Davies' theorem. Instead we use an elegant argument that we learned from Nazarov through MathOverflow. We also obtain some generalizations of the coarea inequality.

Abstract:We prove that every 1-Lipschitz map from a closed metric surface onto a closed Riemannian surface that has the same area is an isometry. If we replace the target space with a non-smooth surface, then the statement is not true and we study the regularity properties of such a map under different geometric assumptions. Our proof relies on a coarea inequality for continuous Sobolev functions on metric surfaces that we establish, and which generalizes a recent result of Esmayli–Ikonen–Rajala.

Abstract: In this article, we study the properties of conjugacies between polynomial basins. For any conjugacy, there is a quasiconformal conjugacy in the same homotopy class minimizing the dilatation. We compute the precise value of the minimal dilatation. The quasiconformal conjugacy minimizing the dilatation is not unique in general. We give a necessary and sufficient condition when the extremal map is unique.

Abstract:We discuss Q-absolutely continuous functions between Carnot groups, following Maly's definition for maps of several variables. Such maps enjoy nice regularity properties, like continuity, Pansu differentiability a.e., weak differentiability and an Area formula. Furthermore, we extend Stein's result concerning the sharp condition for continuity and differentiability a.e. of a Sobolev map in terms of the integrability of the weak gradient: more precisely, we prove that a Sobolev map between Carnot groups with horizontal gradient of its sections uniformly bounded in L(Q,1) admits a representative which is Q-absolutely continuous.

Abstract:The group of area preserving diffeomorphisms of the annulus acts on its Lie algebra, the globally Hamiltonian vectorfields on the annulus. We consider a certain Hilbert space completion of this group (thinking of it as a group of unitary operators induced by the diffeomorphisms), and prove that the projection of an adjoint orbit onto a ''Cartan'' subalgebra isomorphic to L2([0, 1]) is an infinite-dimensional, weakly compact, convex set, whose extreme points coincide with the orbit, through a certain function, of the ''permutation'' semigroup of measure preserving transformations of [0, 1].

Abstract:We prove a new vectorial functional inequality of Poincaré-Beckner type. The inequality may be interpreted as an entropy-entropy production one for a gradient flow in the metric space of Radon measures. The proof uses subtle analysis of combinations of related super- and sub-level sets employing the coarea formula and the relative isoperimetric inequality.

Abstract:We generalize the Cheeger inequality, a lower bound on the first nontrivial eigenvalue of a Laplacian, to the case of geometric sub-Laplacians on rank-varying Carnot-Carathéodory spaces and we describe a concrete method to lower bound the Cheeger constant. The proof is geometric, and works for Dirichlet, Neumann and mixed boundary conditions. One of the main technical tools in the proof is a generalization of Courant's nodal domain theorem, which is proven from scratch for Neumann and mixed boundary conditions. Carnot groups and the Baouendi-Grushin cylinder are treated as examples.

A connection between Lipschitz and Kazhdan constants for groups of homeomorphisms of the real line

Abstract:We exhibit an obstruction for groups with Property (T) to act on the real line by bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms. This condition is expressed in terms of the Lipschitz constants and the Kazhdan constants associated to finite, generating subsets. As a corollary, we obtain an upper bound for the Kazhdan constants of orderable groups. Our main tool is the Koopman representation associated to the action $\operatorname{BiLip}_+(\mathbb{R})\curvearrowright\mathbb{R}$.

Proof of the Caratheodory Conjecture

Abstract:A well-known conjecture of Caratheodory states that the number of umbilic points on a closed convex surface in ${\mathbb E}^3$ must be greater than one. In this paper we prove this for $C^{3+\alpha}$-smooth surfaces. The Conjecture is first reformulated in terms of complex points on a Lagrangian surface in $TS^2$, viewed as the space of oriented geodesics in ${\mathbb E}^3$. Here complex and Lagrangian refer to the canonical neutral Kaehler structure on $TS^2$. We then prove that the existence of a closed convex surface with only one umbilic point implies the existence of a totally real Lagrangian hemisphere in $TS^2$, to which it is not possible to attach the edge of a holomorphic disc. The main step in the proof is to establish the existence of a holomorphic disc with edge contained on any given totally real Lagrangian hemisphere. To construct the holomorphic disc we utilize mean curvature flow with respect to the neutral metric. Long-time existence of this flow is proven by a priori estimates and we show that the flowing disc is asymptotically holomorphic. Existence of a holomorphic disc is then deduced from Schauder estimates.

Abstract:We establish Lipschitz regularity of harmonic maps from $\mathrm{RCD}(K,N)$ metric measure spaces with lower Ricci curvature bounds and dimension upper bounds in synthetic sense with values into $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ metric spaces with non-positive sectional curvature. Under the same assumptions, we obtain a Bochner-Eells-Sampson inequality with a Hessian type-term. This gives a fairly complete generalization of the classical theory for smooth source and target spaces to their natural synthetic counterparts and an affirmative answer to a question raised several times in the recent literature. The proofs build on a new interpretation of the interplay between Optimal Transport and the Heat Flow on the source space and on an original perturbation argument in the spirit of the viscosity theory of PDEs.

Abstract:We establish an area formula for computing the spherical measure of an intrinsic graph of any codimension in an arbitrary homogeneous group. Our approach only assumes that the map generating the intrinsic graph is continuously intrinsically differentiable. The important novelty lies in the notion of Jacobian, which is built by the auxiliary Euclidean distance. The introduction of this Jacobian allows the spherical factor to appear in the area formula and enables explicit computations.

Abstract:Dual pairs of interior and exterior Hardy spaces associated to a simple closed Lipschitz planar curve are considered, leading to a Möbius invariant function bounding the norm of the Cauchy transform $\bf{C}$ from below. This function is shown to satisfy strong rigidity properties and is closely connected via the Berezin transform to the square of the Kerzman-Stein operator. Explicit example calculations are presented. For ellipses, a new asymptotically sharp lower bound on the norm of $\bf{C}$ is produced.

Abstract:We give a classification of generic coadjoint orbits for the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of a closed non-orientable surface. This completes V. Arnold's program of studying invariants of incompressible fluids in 2D. As an auxiliary problem, we also classify simple Morse pseudo-functions on non-orientable surfaces up to area-preserving diffeomorphisms.

Abstract:In the setting of Carnot groups, we propose an approach of taming singularities to get coercive inequalities. To this end, we develop a technique to introduce natural singularities in the energy function U in order to force one of the coercivity conditions. In particular, we explore explicit constructions of probability measures on Carnot groups which secure Poincaré and even Logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. As applications, we get analogues of the Dyson–Ornstein–Uhlenbeck model on the Heisenberg group and obtain results on the discreteness of the spectrum of related Markov generators.

Abstract:We study analytic properties of harmonic maps from Riemannian polyhedra into CAT($\kappa$) spaces for $\kappa\in\{0,1\}$. Locally, on each top-dimensional face of the domain, this amounts to studying harmonic maps from smooth domains into CAT($\kappa$) spaces. We compute a target variation formula that captures the curvature bound in the target, and use it to prove an $L^p$ Liouville-type theorem for harmonic maps from admissible polyhedra into convex CAT($\kappa$) spaces. Another consequence we derive from the target variation formula is the Eells-Sampson Bochner formula for CAT(1) targets.
