Abstract:It is shown that any $X_1,\ldots,X_s,Y_1,\ldots,Y_t\in \mathbb{B}_p(\mathscr{H})$ statify the Clarkson-McCarthy type inequalities if and only if any corresponding $x=(x_1,\ldots, x_s)^T\in \mathbb{C}^s, y=(y_1, \ldots, y_t)^T\in \mathbb{C}^t$ satisfy $x=Uy$ for some subunitary matrix $U$.

Abstract:Strengthening of two Clarkson-McCarthy inequalities with several operators is established. These not only confirm a conjecture of the author in [Israel J. Math. 2024], but also improve results of Hirazallah-Kittaneh in [Integral Equations Operator Theory 60 (2008)] and Bhatia-Kittaneh in [Bull. London Math. Soc. 36 (2004)]. We also give a generalization of a result for pairs $(A_i,B_i), 1\le i\le n$ and obtain another form of another inequality. The infinite cases of these inequalities are also discussed. The method is an extension of the result obtained by Bourin and Lee in [Linear Algebra Appl. 601 (2020)]. Some related eigenvalue inequalities are also obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we give two new generalizations of Clarkson-McCarthy with several operators, which depends on the unitary orbit technique developed by Bourin, Hadamard Three-lines Theorem and the duality argument developed by Ball, Carlen and Lieb. Moreover, we complete the optimal 2-uniform convexity inequality established by Ball, Carlen and Lieb in [Invent. Math. 115 (1994) 463-482.]. Some open problems are presented.

Abstract:Let $X\subset A^{Z^d}$ be a $2$-dimensional subshift of finite type. We prove that any $2$-dimensional multidimensional subshift of finite type can be characterized by a square matrix of infinite dimension. We extend our result to a general $d$-dimensional case. We prove that the multidimensional shift space is non-empty if and only if the matrix obtained is of positive dimension. In the process, we give an alternative view of the necessary and sufficient conditions obtained for the non-emptiness of the multidimensional shift space. We also give sufficient conditions for the shift space $X$ to exhibit periodic points.

Duality of Hoffman constants

Abstract:Suppose $A\in \mathbb{R}^{m\times n}$ and consider the following canonical systems of inequalities defined by $A$: $$ \begin{array}{l} Ax=b\\ x \ge 0 \end{array} \qquad \text{ and }\qquad A^T y - c \le 0. $$ We establish some novel duality relationships between the Hoffman constants for the above constraint systems of linear inequalities provided some suitable Slater condition holds. The crux of our approach is a Hoffman duality inequality for polyhedral systems of constraints. The latter in turn yields an interesting duality identity between the Hoffman constants of the following box-constrained systems of inequalities: $$ \begin{array}{l} Ax=b\\ \ell \le x \le u \end{array}\qquad \text{ and }\qquad \ell \le A^T y - c \le u $$ for $\ell, u\in \mathbb{R}^n$ with $\ell < u.$

Abstract:The Cauchy’s formula of entire functions f:Ck→C is used to establish Markov-Bernstein type inequalities of multivariate polynomials with positive coeffeicients on the k-dimensional simplex Tk⊂Rk and on the cube [0,1]k. The main results generalize and improve those of G.G. Lorentz, etc. Some applications of these inequalities are also considered in polynomial constrained approximation.

Abstract:We consider the set $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$ of $n\times n$-matrices with integer elements of size at most $H$ and obtain a new upper bound on the number of matrices from $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$ with a given characteristic polynomial $f \in \mathbb Z[X]$, which is uniform with respect to $f$. This complements the asymptotic formula of A. Eskin, S. Mozes and N. Shah (1996) in which $f$ has to be fixed and irreducible. Using this result, among others, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the number of $s$-tuples of matrices from $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$, satisfying various multiplicative relations, including multiplicative dependence and bounded generation of a subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb Q)$. These problems generalise those studied in the scalar case $n=1$ by F. Pappalardi, M. Sha, I. E. Shparlinski and C. L. Stewart (2018) with an obvious distinction due to the non-commutativity of matrices. Motivated by these problems, we also prove various properties of the variety of complex matrices with fixed characteristic polynomial, including computing the degree of this variety.

Abstract:We prove both necessary and sufficient conditions for $L^p$-bound\-ed\-ness of certain multilinear generalized Radon transforms that arise as Heisenberg group analogues of the Brascamp--Lieb inequalities on Euclidean space. The necessary and sufficient conditions coincide in some important special cases, but differ in others.

Abstract:Generalizing the notion of a multiplicative inequality among minors of a totally positive matrix, we describe, over full rank cluster algebras of finite type, the cone of Laurent monomials in cluster variables that are bounded as a real-valued function on the positive locus of the cluster variety. We prove that the extreme rays of this cone are the u-variables of the cluster algebra. Using this description, we prove that all bounded ratios are bounded by 1 and give a sufficient condition for all such ratios to be subtraction free. This allows us to show in Gr(2, n), Gr(3, 6), Gr(3, 7), Gr(3, 8) that every bounded Laurent monomial in Plücker coordinates factors into a positive integer combination of so-called primitive ratios. In Gr(4, 8) this factorization does not exists, but we provide the full list of extreme rays of the cone of bounded Laurent monomials in Plücker coordinates.

Abstract:By utilizing the properties of positive definite matrices, mathematical expectations, and positive linear functionals in matrix space, the Kantorovich inequality and Wielandt inequality for positive definite matrices and random variables are obtained. Some novel Kantorovich type inequalities pertaining to matrix ordinary products, Hadamard products, and mathematical expectations of random variables are provided. Furthermore, several interesting unified and generalized forms of the Wielandt inequality for positive definite matrices are also studied. These derived inequalities are then exploited to establish an inequality regarding various correlation coefficients and study some applications in the relative efficiency of parameter estimation of linear statistical models.

A Matrix Generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya Rearrangement Inequality and Its Applications

Abstract:We prove a generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya rearrangement inequality to positive definite matrices. The inequality can be seen as a commutation principle in the sense of Iusem and Seeger. An important instrument in the proof is a first-order perturbation formula for a certain spectral function, which could be of independent interests. The inequality is then extended to rectangular matrices. Using our main results, we derive new inequalities for several distance-like functions encountered in various signal processing or machine learning applications.

Abstract:A rational probability distribution on four binary random variables $X, Y, Z, U$ is constructed which satisfies the conditional independence relations $[X \mathrel{\text{$\perp\mkern-10mu\perp$}} Y]$, $[X \mathrel{\text{$\perp\mkern-10mu\perp$}} Z \mid U]$, $[Y \mathrel{\text{$\perp\mkern-10mu\perp$}} U \mid Z]$ and $[Z \mathrel{\text{$\perp\mkern-10mu\perp$}} U \mid XY]$ but whose entropy vector violates the Ingleton inequality. This settles a recent question of Studený (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory vol. 67, no. 11) and shows that there are, up to symmetry, precisely ten inclusion-minimal sets of conditional independence assumptions on four discrete random variables which make the Ingleton inequality hold. The last case in the classification of which of these inequalities are essentially conditional is also settled.

Abstract:In this paper we study some determinant inequalities and matrix inequalities which have a geometrical flavour. We first examine some inequalities which place work of Macbeath [13] in a more general setting and also relate to recent work of Gressman [8]. In particular, we establish optimisers for these determinant inequalities. We then use these inequalities to establish our main theorem which gives a geometric inequality of matrix type which improves and extends some inequalities of Christ in [5].

Abstract:The aim of this note is twofold. Firstly, we prove an abstract version of the Calderón transference principle for inequalities of admissible type in the general commutative multilinear and multiparameter setting. Such an operation does not increase the constants in the transferred inequalities. Secondly, we use the last information to study a certain dichotomy arising in problems of finding the best constants in the weak type $(1,1)$ and strong type $(p,p)$ inequalities for one-parameter ergodic maximal operators.
