Abstract:The spectrum of a complex-valued function $f$ on $\mathbb{Z}_{q}^n$ is the set $\{|u|:u\in \mathbb{Z}_q^n~\mathrm{and}~\widehat{f}(u)\neq 0\}$, where $|u|$ is the Hamming weight of $u$ and $\widehat{f}$ is the Fourier transform of $f$. Let $1\leq d'\leq d\leq n$. In this work, we study Boolean functions on $\mathbb{Z}_{q}^n$, $q\geq 3$, whose spectrum is a subset of $\{0\}\cup \{d',\ldots,d\}$. We prove that such functions have at most $\frac{d}{2}\cdot \frac{q^{d+d'}}{2^{d'}(q-1)^{d'}}$ relevant variables for $d'+d\leq n+1$. In particular, we prove that any Boolean function of degree $d$ on $\mathbb{Z}_{q}^n$, $q\geq 3$, has at most $\frac{dq^{d+1}}{4(q-1)}$ relevant variables. We also show that any equitable 2-partition of the Hamming graph $H(n,q)$, $q\geq 3$, associated with the eigenvalue $n(q-1)-qd$ has at most $\frac{d}{2}\cdot \frac{q^{2d}}{2^d(q-1)^{d}}$ relevant variables for $d\leq \frac{n+1}{2}$.

The stability of the algebraic degree of Boolean functions when restricted to affine spaces

Abstract:We study the $n$-variable Boolean functions which keep their algebraic degree unchanged when they are restricted to any (affine) hyperplane, or more generally to any affine space of a given co-dimension $k$. For cryptographic applications it is of interest to determine functions $f$ which have a relatively high degree and also maintain this degree when restricted to affine spaces of co-dimension $k$ for $k$ ranging from 1 to as high a value as possible. This highest value will be called the restriction degree stability of $f$, denoted by $\rm deg\_stab(f)$. We give several necessary and/or sufficient conditions for $f$ to maintain its degree on spaces of co-dimension $k$; we show that this property is related to the property of having ``fast points'' as well as to other properties and parameters. The value of $\rm deg\_stab(f)$ is determined for functions of degrees $r\in \{1,2,n-2,n-1,n\}$ and for functions which are direct sums of monomials; we also determine the symmetric functions which maintain their degree on any hyperplane. Furthermore, we give an explicit formula for the number of functions which maintain their degree on all hyperplanes. Finally, using our previous results and some computer assistance, we determine the behaviour of all the functions in 8 variables, therefore determining the optimal ones (i.e. with highest value of $\rm deg\_stab(f)$) for each degree.

On the Rational Degree of Boolean Functions and Applications

Abstract:We study a natural complexity measure of Boolean functions known as the (exact) rational degree. For total functions $f$, it is conjectured that $\mathrm{rdeg}(f)$ is polynomially related to $\mathrm{deg}(f)$, where $\mathrm{deg}(f)$ is the Fourier degree. Towards this conjecture, we show that symmetric functions have rational degree at least $\mathrm{deg}(f)/2$ and monotone functions have rational degree at least $\sqrt{\mathrm{deg}(f)}$. We observe that both of these lower bounds are tight. In addition, we show that all read-once depth-$d$ Boolean formulae have rational degree at least $\Omega(\mathrm{deg}(f)^{1/d})$. Furthermore, we show that almost every Boolean function on $n$ variables has rational degree at least $n/2 - O(\sqrt{n})$. In contrast to total functions, we exhibit partial functions that witness unbounded separations between rational and approximate degree, in both directions. As a consequence, we show that for quantum computers, post-selection and bounded-error are incomparable resources in the black-box model.

Abstract:Boolean functions are important primitives in different domains of cryptology, complexity and coding theory. In this paper, we connect the tools from cryptology and complexity theory in the domain of Boolean functions with low polynomial degree and high sensitivity. It is well known that the polynomial degree of of a Boolean function and its resiliency are directly connected. Using this connection we analyze the polynomial degree-sensitivity values through the lens of resiliency, demonstrating existence and non-existence results of functions with low polynomial degree and high sensitivity on small number of variables (upto 10). In this process, borrowing an idea from complexity theory, we show that one can implement resilient Boolean functions on a large number of variables with linear size and logarithmic depth. Finally, we extend the notion of sensitivity to higher order and note that the existing construction idea of Nisan and Szegedy (1994) can provide only constant higher order sensitivity when aiming for polynomial degree of $n-\omega(1)$. In this direction, we present a construction with low ($n-\omega(1)$) polynomial degree and super-constant $\omega(1)$ order sensitivity exploiting Maiorana-McFarland constructions, that we borrow from construction of resilient functions. The questions we raise identify novel combinatorial problems in the domain of Boolean functions.

Abstract:The algebraic degree is an important parameter of Boolean functions used in cryptography. When a function in a large number of variables is not given explicitly in algebraic normal form, it might not be feasible to compute its degree. Instead, one can try to estimate the degree using probabilistic tests. We propose a probabilistic test for deciding whether the algebraic degree of a Boolean function $f$ is below a certain value $k$. The test involves picking an affine space of dimension $k$ and testing whether the values on $f$ on that space sum up to zero. If $deg(f)<k$, then $f$ will always pass the test, otherwise it will sometimes pass and sometimes fail the test, depending on which affine space was chosen. The probability of failing the proposed test is closely related to the number of monomials of degree $k$ in a polynomial $g$, averaged over all the polynomials $g$ which are affine equivalent to $f$. We initiate the study of the probability of failing the proposed ``$deg(f)<k$'' test. We show that in the particular case when the degree of $f$ is actually equal to $k$, the probability will be in the interval $(0.288788, 0.5]$, and therefore a small number of runs of the test is sufficient to give, with very high probability, the correct answer. Exact values of this probability for all the polynomials in 8 variables were computed using the representatives listed by Hou and by Langevin and Leander.

Abstract:We consider Boolean functions f:{-1,1}^n->{-1,1} that are close to a sum of independent functions on mutually exclusive subsets of the variables. We prove that any such function is close to just a single function on a single subset. We also consider Boolean functions f:R^n->{-1,1} that are close, with respect to any product distribution over R^n, to a sum of their variables. We prove that any such function is close to one of the variables. Both our results are independent of the number of variables, but depend on the variance of f. I.e., if f is \epsilon*Var(f)-close to a sum of independent functions or random variables, then it is O(\epsilon)-close to one of the independent functions or random variables, respectively. We prove that this dependence on Var(f) is tight. Our results are a generalization of the Friedgut-Kalai-Naor Theorem [FKN'02], which holds for functions f:{-1,1}^n->{-1,1} that are close to a linear combination of uniformly distributed Boolean variables.

Abstract:We investigate the degree spectra of computable relations on canonically ordered natural numbers and integers . As for , we provide several criteria that fix the degree spectrum of a computable relation to all c.e. or to all degrees; this includes the complete characterization of the degree spectra of so-called computable block functions that have only finitely many types of blocks. Compared to Bazhenov et al. (in: LIPIcs, vol 219, pp 8:1–8:20, 2022), we obtain a more general solution to the problem regarding possible degree spectra on , answering the question whether there are infinitely many such spectra. As for , we prove the following dichotomy result: given an arbitrary computable relation R on , its degree spectrum is either trivial or it contains all c.e. degrees. This result, and the proof techniques required to solve it, extend the analogous theorem for obtained by Wright (Computability 7:349–365, 2018), and provide initial insight to Wright's question whether such a dichotomy holds on computable ill-founded linear orders. This article is an extended version of Bazhenov et al. (in: LIPIcs, vol 219, pp 8:1–8:20, 2022).

Abstract:In this paper, the set of some points, derived at which the degree of a Boolean function can be reduced by at least i, is defined as D-f(i). We show the set of i-DPs (i-differential point) is closed to the operation XOR, and the origin i-DP still exists after taking a derivative on the Boolean function at a non-2-DP. In addition, an n-variable non-linear Boolean function of degree d has at most 2(n-d) - 1 2-DPs. We prove that an n-bit cipher whose n component functions have common terms of degree n 1, is not IND-CPA secure. We also show that an n-bit cipher with low degree d can be distinguished with obvious advantage and data complexity 2(d) + 1.

Abstract:The influence of a variable is an important concept in the analysis of Boolean functions. The more general notion of influence of a set of variables on a Boolean function has four separate definitions in the literature. In the present work, we introduce a new definition of influence of a set of variables which is based on the auto-correlation function and develop its basic theory. Among the new results that we obtain are generalisations of the Poincaré inequality and the edge expansion property of the influence of a single variable. Further, we obtain new characterisations of resilient and bent functions using the notion of influence. We show that the previous definition of influence due to Fischer et. al. (2002) and Blais (2009) is half the value of the auto-correlation based influence that we introduce. Regarding the other prior notions of influence, we make a detailed study of these and show that each of these definitions do not satisfy one or more desirable properties that a notion of influence may be expected to satisfy.

Abstract:We study the number of queries needed to identify a monotone Boolean function $f:\{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}$. A query consists of a 0-1-sequence, and the answer is the value of $f$ on that sequence. It is well-known that the number of queries needed is $\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}+\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor+1}$ in general. Here we study a variant where $f$ has $k$ ``reasons'' to be 1, i.e., its disjunctive normal form has $k$ conjunctions if the redundant conjunctions are deleted. This problem is equivalent to identifying an upfamily in $2^{[n]}$ that has exactly $k$ minimal members. We find the asymptotics on the number of queries needed for fixed $k$. We also study the non-adaptive version of the problem, where the queries are asked at the same time, and determine the exact number of queries for most values of $k$ and $n$.

Abstract:Let $F_1,\ldots,F_R$ be homogeneous polynomials with integer coefficients in $n$ variables with differing degrees. Write $\boldsymbol{F}=(F_1,\ldots,F_R)$ with $D$ being the maximal degree. Suppose that $\boldsymbol{F}$ is a nonsingular system and $n\ge D^2 4^{D+6}R^5$. We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of prime solutions to $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$, whose main term is positive if (i) $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ has a nonsingular solution over the $p$-adic units $\mathbb{U}_p$ for all primes $p$, and (ii) $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ has a nonsingular solution in the open cube $(0,1)^n$. This can be viewed as a smooth local-global principle for $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ with differing degrees. It follows that, under (i) and (ii), the set of prime solutions to $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ is Zariski dense in the set of its solutions.

Abstract:If a linear differential operator with rational function coefficients is reducible, its factors may have coefficients with numerators and denominatorsof very high degree. When the base field is $\mathbb C$, we give a completely explicit bound for the degrees of the monic right factors in terms of the degree and the order of the original operator, as well as the largest modulus of the local exponents at all its singularities. As a consequence, if a differential operator $L$ has rational function coefficients over a number field, we get degree bounds for its monic right factors in terms of the degree, the order and the height of $L$, and of the degree of the number field.

Abstract:The problem of counting all inequivalent monotone Boolean functions of nine variables is considered. We solve the problem using known algorithms and deriving new ones when necessary. We describe methods to count fixed points in sets of all monotone Boolean functions under a given permutation of input variables. With these techniques as a basis, we tabulate the cardinalities of these sets for nine variables. By applying Burnside’s lemma and the numbers obtained, we calculate the number of inequivalent monotone Boolean functions of 9 variables, which equals 789,204,635,842,035,040,527,740,846,300,252,680.

Previous authors have focused on the cases when the max min of the algebraic degree is 0 or 1. Upper bounds, lower bounds and a conjecture on the exact value in special cases are presented.

Abstract:Following recent developments in discrete gravity, we study geometrical variables (angles and forms) of simplices in the discrete geometry point of view. Some of our relatively new results include: new ways of writing a set of simplices using vectorial (differential form) and coordinate-free pictures, and a consistent procedure to couple particles of space, together with a method to calculate the degrees of freedom of the system of 'quanta' of space in the classical framework.

Abstract:The study of complexity measures of Boolean functions led Nisan and Szegedy to state the sensitivity conjecture in 1994, claiming a polynomial relation between degree and sensitivity. This problem remained unsolved until 2019, when Huang proved the conjecture via an equivalent graph theoretical reformulation due to Gotsman and Linial. We study $m$-ary functions, i.e., functions $f: T^n \rightarrow T$ where $T\subseteq \mathbb{C}$ is a finite alphabet of cardinality $|T| = m $ and extend the notions of degree $\mathrm{deg}(f)$ and sensitivity $s(f)$ to $m$-ary functions and show $s(f)\in O(\mathrm{deg}(f)^2)$. This generalizes results of Nisan and Szegedy. Conversely, we introduce the $m$-ary sensitivity conjecture, claiming a polynomial upper bound for $\mathrm{deg}(f)$ in terms of $s(f)$. Analogously to results of Gotsman and Linial, we provide a formulation of the conjecture in terms of imbalanced partitions of Hamming graphs into low degree subgraphs. Combining this with ideas of Chung, Füredi, Graham and Seymour, we show that for any prime $p$ the bound in the $p$-ary sensitivity conjecture has to be at least quadratic: there exist $p$-ary functions $f$ of arbitrarily large degree and $\mathrm{deg}(f)\in \Omega(s(f)^2)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the nonexistence of bent functions in the class of Boolean functions without monomials of degree less than d in their algebraic normal forms (ANF). We prove that n-variable Boolean functions in such class are not bent when there are not more than n + d - 3 monomials in their ANFs. We also show that an n-variable Boolean function is not bent if it has no monomial of degree less than ⌈3n/8 + 3/4⌉ in its ANF.

Abstract:Degrees of freedom is a fundamental concept in statistical modeling, as it provides a quantitative description of the amount of fitting performed by a given procedure. But, despite this fundamental role in statistics, its behavior not completely well-understood, even in some fairly basic settings. For example, it may seem intuitively obvious that the best subset selection fit with subset size k has degrees of freedom larger than k, but this has not been formally verified, nor has is been precisely studied. In large part, the current paper is motivated by this particular problem, and we derive an exact expression for the degrees of freedom of best subset selection in a restricted setting (orthogonal predictor variables). Along the way, we develop a concept that we name "search degrees of freedom"; intuitively, for adaptive regression procedures that perform variable selection, this is a part of the (total) degrees of freedom that we attribute entirely to the model selection mechanism. Finally, we establish a modest extension of Stein's formula to cover discontinuous functions, and discuss its potential role in degrees of freedom and search degrees of freedom calculations.

Abstract:We investigate connections between SAT (the propositional satisfiability problem) and combinatorics, around the minimum degree (number of occurrences) of variables in various forms of redundancy-free boolean conjunctive normal forms (clause-sets). Lean clause-sets do not have non-trivial autarkies, that is, it is not possible to satisfy some clauses and leave the other clauses untouched. The deficiency of a clause-set is the difference of the number of clauses and the number of variables. We prove a precise upper bound on the minimum variable degree of lean clause-sets in dependency on the deficiency. If a clause-set does not fulfil this upper bound, then it must have a non-trivial autarky; we show that the autarky-reduction (elimination of affected clauses) can be done in polynomial time, while it is open to find the autarky itself in polynomial time. Then we investigate this upper bound for the special case of minimally unsatisfiable clause-sets. We show that the bound can be improved here, introducing a general method to improve the underlying recurrence. We consider precise relations, and thus the investigations have a number-theoretical flavour. We try to build a bridge from logic to combinatorics (especially to hypergraph colouring), and we discuss thoroughly the background and open problems, and provide many examples and explanations.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the influences of variables on Boolean functions in general product spaces. Unlike the case of functions on the discrete cube where there is a clear definition of influence, in the general case at least three definitions were presented in different papers. We propose a family of definitions for the influence, that contains all the known definitions, as well as other natural definitions, as special cases. We prove a generalization of the BKKKL theorem, which is tight in terms of the definition of influence used in the assertion, and use it to generalize several known results on influences in general product spaces.
