Abstract:In this study, we investigate and compare formulations for computing shape derivatives in bi-material level-set optimization with precise modeling of the interface. The level-set function is parameterized using B-splines, whose coordinates serve as design variables. A precise mechanical model is obtained every design cycle, replicating the exact geometry of the bi-material design, using untrimming techniques and IGA on unstructured meshes. Design sensitivities are formulated by either a "discretize-then-differentiate" or a "differentiate-then-discretize" approach. A detailed comparative study shows the limitations of the latter in terms of accuracy, specifically when stresses near the material interface dominate the stress field. The precise representation of the interface facilitates an accurate evaluation of interfacial stresses, and the consistent discretized sensitivities enable to minimize them directly -- highlighting the main advantage of our framework. Furthermore, reducing the discretized approach by considering only interface control points and a selective set of adjacent control points provides an ideal trade-off between accuracy and numerical efficiency. This lays the foundations for multi-material shape and topology optimization procedures, considering accurate responses on the interface.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper aims to explore and compare methods for calculating shape derivatives when accurately modeling interfaces in bi - material level - set optimization. Specifically, the paper focuses on how to achieve accurate shape sensitivity analysis in the optimization process of stress fields in multi - material structures, especially at material interfaces. The following are the main research objectives of the paper: 1. **Accurate representation of interfaces**: By using B - spline to parameterize the level - set function and combining isogeometric analysis (IGA) on unstructured grids, ensure that an accurate mechanical model can be obtained for each design iteration, thereby accurately replicating the exact geometry of the bi - material design. 2. **Comparison of shape sensitivity analysis methods**: The paper compares two main shape sensitivity analysis methods: - **Discretize - then - differentiate** - **Differentiate - then - discretize** It is found that the latter has accuracy problems when dealing with stresses near the interface, especially when the interface stress dominates the stress field. 3. **Improving computational efficiency**: By only considering the interface control points and their selected neighboring control points, reduce the computational cost of the discretization method, thereby improving numerical efficiency while maintaining accuracy. 4. **Foundation for multi - material shape and topology optimization**: The work of this paper provides a foundation for multi - material shape and topology optimization, especially considering the accurate response on the interface. ### Key technical means - **Level Set Method (LSM)**: Used to implicitly represent the interface between material phases. - **B - spline parameterization**: Used to parameterize the level - set function, with control points as design variables. - **Isogeometric Analysis (IGA)**: Simulate on unstructured grids to ensure accurate boundary representation. - **Shape sensitivity analysis**: Calculate design sensitivity through different methods (discretize - then - differentiate and differentiate - then - discretize). ### Main contributions - **Accurate interface representation**: Through B - spline and IGA, accurate modeling of material interfaces is achieved, thereby improving the accuracy of stress calculations. - **Comparison of shape sensitivity analysis**: The advantages and disadvantages of different sensitivity analysis methods are compared in detail, and the limitations of the differentiate - then - discretize method in interface stress calculations are pointed out. - **Efficient optimization strategy**: An optimization strategy that only considers interface control points and their neighboring control points is proposed, balancing accuracy and computational efficiency. ### Conclusion Through detailed comparison and experimental verification, this paper shows the importance of accurately representing interfaces in multi - material structure optimization and the applicability and limitations of different shape sensitivity analysis methods. These research results provide important theoretical and technical support for future multi - material shape and topology optimization.
