Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$. For a finite extension $L/K$, the cardinality of the group $A(L)_{\operatorname{tors}}$ of torsion points in $A(L)$ can be bounded in terms of the degree $[L:K]$. We study the smallest real number $\beta_A$ such that for any finite extension $L/K$ and $\varepsilon>0$, we have $|A(L)_{\operatorname{tors}}| \leq C \cdot [L:K]^{\beta_A+\varepsilon}$, where the constant $C$ depends only on $A$ and $\varepsilon$ (and not $L$). Assuming the Mumford--Tate conjecture for $A$, we will show that $\beta_A$ agrees with the conjectured value of Hindry and Ratazzi. We also give a similar bound for the maximal order of a torsion point in $A(L)$.

Abstract:Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field F. For a prime number $\ell$, we consider the field extension of F generated by the $\ell$-powered torsion points of A. According to a conjecture made by Rasmussen and Tamagawa, if we require these fields to be both a pro-$\ell$ extension of $F(\mu_{\ell^{\infty}})$ and unramified away from $\ell$, examples are quite rare. Indeed, it is expected that for a fixed dimension and field of definition, there exists such an abelian variety for only a finite number of primes. We prove a uniform version of the conjecture in the case where the abelian varieties are elliptic curves with complex multiplication. In addition, we provide explicit bounds in cases where the number field has degree less than or equal to 100.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field, $S$ a finite set of places. For $\mathbb{G}_m$ or an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $K$, we establish uniformity results on the number of $S$-integral torsion points relative to a non-torsion point $\beta$, as $\beta$ varies over number fields of bounded degree. In particular for $\mathbb{G}_m$, if $D$ is a positive integer, we prove a uniform bound on the degree of a torsion point $\zeta$ that is $S$-integral relative to a non-torsion point $\beta$ with degree $\leq D$.

The Uniform Mordell-Lang Conjecture

Abstract:The Mordell--Lang conjecture for abelian varieties states that the intersection of an algebraic subvariety $X$ with a subgroup of finite rank is contained in a finite union of cosets contained in $X$. In this article, we prove a uniform version of this conjecture, meaning that that the number of cosets necessary does not depend on the ambient abelian variety. To achieve this, we prove a general gap principle on algebraic points that extends the gap principle for curves embedded into their Jacobians, previously obtained by Dimitrov--Gao--Habegger and Kühne. Our new gap principle also implies the full uniform Bogomolov conjecture in abelian varieties.

Local-global principle and integral Tate conjecture for certain varieties

Abstract:We give a geometric criterion to check the validity of the integral Tate conjecture for one-cycles on a smooth projective variety that is separably rationally connected in codimension one, and to check that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the local-global principle for zero-cycles on a separably rationally connected variety defined over a global function field. We prove that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the local-global principle for zero-cycles on all geometrically rational surfaces defined over a global function field, and to the Hasse principle for rational points on del Pezzo surfaces of degree four defined over a global function field of odd characteristic. Along the way, we also prove some results about the space of one-cycles on a smooth projective variety that is separably rationally connected in codimension one, which leads to the equality of the coniveau filtration and the strong coniveau filtration on degree $3$ homology of such varieties.

Abstract:The torsion conjecture says: for any abelian variety A defined over a number field k , the order of the torsion subgroup of A ( k ) is bounded by a constant C ( k, d ) which depends only on the number field k and the dimension d of the abelian variety. The torsion conjecture remains open in general. However, in this paper, a short argument shows that the conjecture is true for more general fields if we consider linear groups instead of abelian varieties. If G is a connected linear algebraic group defined over a field k which is finitely generated over ℚ, Γ is a torsion subgroup of G ( k ). Then the order of Γ is bounded by a constant C ′( k, d ) which depends only on k and the dimension d of G .

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety over the function field $K$ of a compact Riemann surface $B$. Fix a model $f \colon \mathcal{A} \to B$ of $A/K$ and an effective horizontal divisor $\mathcal{D} \subset \mathcal{A}$. We study $(S, \mathcal{D})$-integral sections $\sigma$ of $\mathcal{A}$ where $S \subset B$ is arbitrary. These sections $\sigma$ are algebraic and satisfy the geometric condition $f(\sigma(B) \cap \mathcal{D})\subset S$. Developing the idea of Parshin, we formulate a hyperbolic-homotopic height of such sections as a substitute for intersection theory to establish new results concerning the finiteness and the polynomial growth of large unions of $(S, \mathcal{D})$-integral points where $S$ is only required to be finite in a thin analytic open subset of $B$. Such results are out of reach of purely algebraic methods and imply new evidence and interesting phenomena to the Geometric Lang-Vojta conjecture.

Abstract:For an abelian variety $A$ over a finitely generated field $K$ of characteristic $p > 0$, we prove that the algebraic rank of $A$ is at most a suitably defined analytic rank. Moreover, we prove that equality, i.e., the BSD rank conjecture, holds for $A/K$ if and only if a suitably defined Tate--Shafarevich group of $A/K$ (1) has finite $\ell$-primary component for some/all $\ell \neq p$, or (2) finite prime-to-$p$ part, or (3) has $p$-primary part of finite exponent, or (4) is of finite exponent. There is an algorithm to verify those conditions for concretely given $A/K$.

Intersecting the torsion of elliptic curves

Abstract:In 2007, Bogomolov and Tschinkel proved that given two complex elliptic curves $E_1$ and $E_2$ along with even degree-$2$ maps $\pi_j\colon E_j\to \mathbb{P}^1$ having different branch loci, the intersection of the image of the torsion points of $E_1$ and $E_2$ under their respective $\pi_j$ is finite. They conjectured (also in works with Fu) that the cardinality of this intersection is uniformly bounded independently of the elliptic curves. As it has been observed in the literature, the recent proof of the Uniform Manin-Mumford conjecture implies a full solution of the Bogomolov-Fu-Tschinkel conjecture. In this work we prove a generalization of the Bogomolov-Fu-Tschinkel conjecture where instead of even degree-$2$ maps one can use any rational functions of bounded degree on the elliptic curves as long as they have different branch loci. Our approach combines Nevanlinna theory with the Uniform Manin-Mumford conjecture. With similar techniques, we also prove a result on lower bounds for ranks of elliptic curves over number fields.

Brauer-Manin obstructions for homogeneous spaces of commutative affine algebraic groups over global fields

Abstract:Questions related to Brauer-Manin obstructions to the Hasse principle and weak approximation for homogeneous spaces of tori over a number field are well-studied, generally using arithmetic duality theorems, starting with works of Sansuc and of Colliot-Thélène. In this article, we prove the analogous statements (and include obstructions to strong approximation over finite places) in the general case of a commutative affine group scheme $G$ of finite type over a global field in any characteristic. We also study finiteness of different variants of the second Tate-Shafarevich kernel (such as $S$-kernels and $\omega$-kernels) of the Cartier dual of $G$. All this is made possible by some recent theoretical advancements in positive characteristic, namely the finiteness theorems of B. Conrad and the generalized Tate duality of Z. Rosengarten.

An upper bound conjecture for the Yokota invariant

Abstract:We conjecture an upper bound on the growth of the Yokota invariant of polyhedral graphs, extending a previous result on the growth of the $6j$-symbol. Using Barrett's Fourier transform we are able to prove this conjecture in a large family of examples. As a consequence of this result, we prove the Turaev-Viro Volume Conjecture for a new infinite family of hyperbolic manifolds.

Abstract:We survey Vojta's higher-dimensional generalizations of the $abc$ conjecture and Szpiro's conjecture as well as recent developments that apply them to various problems in arithmetic dynamics. In particular, the "$abcd$ conjecture" implies a dynamical analogue of a conjecture on the uniform boundedness of torsion points and a dynamical analogue of Lang's conjecture on lower bounds for canonical heights.

Abstract:In the paper "Uniformity of Mordell-Lang" by Vesselin Dimitrov, Philipp Habegger and Ziyang Gao (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2001.10276" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.10276">arXiv:2001.10276</a>), they use Silverman-Tate's Height Inequality and they give a proof of the same which makes use of Cartier divisors and hence drops the flatness assumption of structure morphisms of compactified abelian schemes. However, their proof makes use of Hironaka's theorem on resolution of singularities which is unknown for fields of positive characteristic. We try to slightly modify their ideas, use blow-ups in place of Hironaka's theorem to make the proof effective for any fields with product formula where heights can be defined and any normal quasi-projective variety as a base. We work in the more general set up of dynamical systems. As an application we prove certain variant of Silverman's Specialization Theorem with restricted hypotheses in higher dimensional bases.

On the observability of Galois representations and the Tate conjecture

Abstract:The Tate conjecture has two parts: i) Tate classes are linear combination of algebraic classes, ii) semisimplicity of Galois representations (for smooth projective varieties). B. Moonen proved that i) implies ii) in characteristic 0, using $p$-adic Hodge theory. We show that an unconditional result lies behind this implication: the {\it observability} of arithmetic monodromy groups of geometric origin (in any characteristic) - which leads to a sharpening of Moonen's result. We also discuss another aspect of the Tate conjecture related to the transcendence of $p$-adic periods.

Abstract:We prove that the mutual energy (or the intersection product in the sense of Arakelov theory) of two dynamical systems associated to Lattès morphisms over $\mathbf{\bar Q}$ is uniformly bounded below and deduce a proof of a conjecture of Bogomolov-Fu-Tschinkel: the number of common images of torsion points of two non-isomorphic elliptic curves over $\mathbf{C}$ by a standard morphism to the projective line is uniformly bounded. The proof crucially relies on the theory of Berkovich spaces over $\mathbf{Z}$ and on an original argument allowing to obtain a global estimate from a central estimate (over a trivially valued field).

On p-torsions of geometric Brauer groups

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective integral variety over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. We show that the finiteness of the exponent of the $p$-primary part of $\mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is equivalent to the Tate conjecture for divisors, generalizing D'Addezio's theorem for abelian varieties to arbitrary smooth projective varieties. In combination with the Leray spectral sequence for rigid cohomology derived from the Berthelot conjecture recently proved by Ertl-Vezzani, we show that the cokernel of $\mathrm{Br}_{\mathrm{nr}}(K(X)) \rightarrow \mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is of finite exponent. This completes the $p$-primary part of the generalization of Artin-Grothendieck's theorem on relations between Brauer groups and Tate-Shafarevich groups to higher relative dimensions.
