Abstract:Greenfeld and Lev conjectured that the Cartesian product of two sets $A$ and $B$ is spectral if and only if $A$ and $B$ are spectral. We construct a counterexample to this fact using the existence of a tile that has no spectra.

Abstract:A set $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ is said to be spectral if the space $L^2(\Omega)$ admits an orthogonal basis of exponential functions. Fuglede (1974) conjectured that $\Omega$ is spectral if and only if it can tile the space by translations. While this conjecture was disproved for general sets, it was recently proved that the Fuglede conjecture does hold for the class of convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The proof was based on a new geometric necessary condition for spectrality, called "weak tiling". In this paper we study further properties of the weak tiling notion, and present applications to convex bodies, non-convex polytopes, product domains and Cantor sets of positive measure.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 45, Issue 1, Page 585-600, March 2024. It is widely believed that typical finite families of [math] matrices admit finite products that attain the joint spectral radius. This conjecture is supported by computational experiments and it naturally leads to the following question: are these spectrum maximizing products typically unique, up to cyclic permutations and powers? We answer this question negatively. As discovered by Horowitz around fifty years ago, there are products of matrices that always have the same spectral radius despite not being cyclic permutations of one another. We show that the simplest Horowitz products can be spectrum maximizing in a robust way; more precisely, we exhibit a small but nonempty open subset of pairs of [math] matrices [math] for which the products [math] and [math] are both spectrum maximizing.

Abstract:We establish a general spectral gap theorem for actions of products of groups which may replace Kazhdan's property (T) in various situations. As a main application, we prove that a confined subgroup of an irreducible lattice in a higher rank semisimple Lie group is of finite index. This significantly strengthens the classical normal subgroup theorem of Margulis and removes the property (T) assumption from the recent counterpart result of Fraczyk and Gelander. We further show that any confined discrete subgroup of a higher rank semisimple Lie group satisfying a certain irreducibility condition is an irreducible lattice. This implies a variant of the Stuck-Zimmer conjecture under a strong irreducibility assumption of the action.

Abstract:We prove the spectral gap property for random walks on the product of two non-locally isomorphic analytic real or p-adic compact groups with simple Lie algebras, under the necessary condition that the marginals posses a spectral gap. Furthermore, we give additional control on the spectral gap depending on certain specific properties of the given groups and marginals; in particular, we prove some new cases of the super-approximation conjecture. One ingredient of the proof is a local Ulam stability result which is introduced and proved in this paper. This result characterizes partially defined almost homomorphisms between two analytic compact groups with simple Lie algebras.

Abstract:In this note we define and study free global spectra: global spectra with non-trivial geometric fixed points only at the trivial group. We show that free global spectra often do not exist, and when they do, their homotopy groups satisfy strong divisibility conditions. As an application, we show that the universal free $G$-spectrum $EG_+$ does not admit a global refinement.

Abstract:Let G be an additive and finite Abelian group, and p a prime number that does not divide the order of G . We show that if G has the universal spectrum property, then so does . This is similar to and extends a previous result for cyclic groups using the same dilation trick but on non-cyclic groups as well. Inductively applying this statement on the known list of permissible G one can replace p with any square-free number that does not divide the order of G , and produce new tiling to spectral results in finite Abelian groups generated by at most two elements.

Joint spectral radius and forbidden products

Abstract:We address the problem of finite products that attain the joint spectral radius of a finite number of square matrices. Up to date the problem of existence of "forbidden products" remained open. We prove that the product $AABABABB$ (together with its circular shifts and their mirror images) never delivers the strict maximum to the joint spectral radius if we restrict consideration to pairs $\{A,B\}$ of real $2\by 2$ matrices. Under this restriction circular shifts and their mirror images constitute the class of isospectral products and hence they all have the same spectral radius for any pair $\{A,B\}$ of $2\by 2$ matrices, even complex. For pairs of complex matrices we have numerical evidence that $AABABABB$ is still a fobidden product. A couple of binary words that encode products from this isospectral class also happen to be the shortest forbidden patterns in the parametric family of double rotations.

Spectral Synthesis on Varieties

Abstract:In his classical paper, Laurent Schwartz proved that on the real line, in every linear translation invariant space of continuous complex valued functions, which is closed under compact convergence the exponential monomials span a dense subspace. He studied so-called local ideals in the space of Fourier transforms, and his proof based on the observation that, on the one hand, these local ideals are completely determined by the exponential monomials in the space, and, on the other hand, these local ideals completely determine the space itself. On the other hand, Dimitri Gurevich gave counterexamples for Schwartz's theorem in higher dimension. In this paper we show that the ideas of localisation can be extended to general locally compact Abelian groups using abstract derivations on the Fourier algebra of compactly supported measures. Based on this method we present necessary and sufficient conditions for spectral synthesis for varieties on locally compact Abelian groups. Using localisation, in \cite{MR4789359} we proved that spectral synthesis holds on a locally compact Abelian group $G$ if and only if it holds on $G/B$, where $B$ is the closed subgroup of compact elements. This may lead to a complete characterisation of locally compact Abelian groups having spectral synthesis.

Abstract:We discuss a version of Pythagoras theorem in noncommutative geometry. Usual Pythagoras theorem can be formulated in terms of Connes' distance, between pure states, in the product of commutative spectral triples. We investigate the generalization to both non pure states and arbitrary spectral triples. We show that Pythagoras theorem is replaced by some Pythagoras inequalities, that we prove for the product of arbitrary (i.e. non-necessarily commutative) spectral triples, assuming only some unitality condition. We show that these inequalities are optimal, and provide non-unital counter-examples inspired by K-homology.

Abstract:The action of the subgroup $\operatorname{G}_2$ of $\operatorname{SO}(7)$ (resp.\ $\operatorname{Spin}(7)$ of $\operatorname{SO}(8)$) on the Grassmannian space $M=\frac{\operatorname{SO}(7)}{\operatorname{SO}(5)\times\operatorname{SO}(2)}$ (resp.\ $M=\frac{\operatorname{SO}(8)}{\operatorname{SO}(5)\times\operatorname{SO}(3)}$) is still transitive. We prove that the spectrum (i.e.\ the collection of eigenvalues of its Laplace-Beltrami operator) of a symmetric metric $g_0$ on $M$ coincides with the spectrum of a $\operatorname{G}_2$-invariant (resp.\ $\operatorname{Spin}(7)$-invariant) metric $g$ on $M$ only if $g_0$ and $g$ are isometric. As a consequence, each non-flat compact irreducible symmetric space of non-group type is spectrally unique among the family of all currently known homogeneous metrics on its underlying differentiable manifold.

Abstract:In this article we study the spectrum of totally geodesic surfaces of a finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold. We show that for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds that contain a totally geodesic surface, this spectrum determines the commensurability class. In addition, we show that any finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold has many pairs of non-isometric finite covers with identical spectra. Forgetting multiplicities, we can also construct pairs where the volume ratio is unbounded.

Abstract:Given a convex polytope, we define its geometric spectrum, a stacky version of Batyrev's stringy E-functions, and we prove a stacky version of a formula of Libgober and Wood about the E-polynomial of a smooth projective variety. As an application, we get a closed formula for the variance of the geometric spectrum and a Noether's formula for two dimensional Fano polytopes (polytopes whose vertices are primitive lattice points). We also show that this geometric spectrum is equal to the algebraic spectrum of the polytope (the spectrum at infinity of a tame Laurent polynomial whose Newton polytope is the polytope alluded to). This gives an explanation and some positive answers to Hertling's conjecture about the variance of the spectrum of tame regular functions.

Abstract:We show that a finite coloring of an amenable group contains `many' monochromatic sets of the form $\{x,y,xy,yx\},$ and natural extensions with more variables. This gives the first combinatorial proof and extensions of Bergelson and McCutcheon's non-commutative Schur theorem. Our main new tool is the introduction of what we call `quasirandom colorings,' a condition that is automatically satisfied by colorings of quasirandom groups, and a reduction to this case.

Abstract:For II$_1$ factors, we show that property (T) is equivalent to weak spectral gap in any inclusion into a larger tracial von Neumann algebra. We also show that not having non-zero almost central vectors in weakly mixing bimodules characterizes property (T) for II$_1$ factors, which allows us to obtain a stronger characterization of property (T) where only weak spectral gap in any irreducible inclusion is required.
