Abstract:Filipazzi, Hacon and Svaldi proved that there are only finitely many topological types of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds. We explore the implications of their results on the boundedness of the geometric quantities in the massless spectrum of the F-theory Calabi-Yau compactifications. We conclude with explicit bounds.

Abstract:In this article we study the spectrum of totally geodesic surfaces of a finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold. We show that for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds that contain a totally geodesic surface, this spectrum determines the commensurability class. In addition, we show that any finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold has many pairs of non-isometric finite covers with identical spectra. Forgetting multiplicities, we can also construct pairs where the volume ratio is unbounded.

Abstract:We study the real spectrum compactification of character varieties of finitely generated groups in semisimple Lie groups. This provides a compactification with good topological properties, and we interpret the boundary points in terms of actions on building-like spaces. Among the applications we give a general framework guaranteeing the existence of equivariant harmonic maps in building-like spaces.

Abstract:Recently an exact duality between topological string and the spectral theory of operators constructed from mirror curves to toric Calabi-Yau threefolds has been proposed. At the same time an exact quantization condition for the cluster integrable systems associated to these geometries has been conjectured. The consistency between the two approaches leads to an infinite set of constraints for the refined BPS invariants of the toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. We prove these constraints for the $Y^{N,m}$ geometries using the $K$-theoretic blowup equations for $SU(N)$ SYM with generic Chern-Simons invariant $m$.

E-string spectrum and typical F-theory geometry

Abstract: In recent scans of 4D F-theory geometric models, it was shown that a dominant majority of the base geometries only support SU(2), $G_2$, $F_4$ and $E_8$ gauge groups. Moreover, most of these gauge groups are shown to couple to strongly coupled "conformal matter" sectors. For example, the $E_8$ gauge group can couple to the compactification of 6D E-string theory on a complex curve. In this paper, we initiate the investigation of these strongly coupled sectors by studying the spectrum of 6D E-string theory. We construct a resolved elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold of a non-minimal Weierstrass model, which contains a non-flat fiber with the topology of generalized del Pezzo surface. The spectrum of E-string theory then arises from M2 brane wrapping modes on various 2-cycles on the non-flat fiber. Finally, we discuss the compactification of these fields to 4D.
On Small Gaps in the Length Spectrum

Abstract:We discuss upper and lower bounds for the size of gaps in the length spectrum of negatively curved manifolds. For manifolds with algebraic generators for the fundamental group, we establish the existence of exponential lower bounds for the gaps. On the other hand, we show that the existence of arbitrary small gaps is topologically generic: this is established both for surfaces of constant negative curvature (Theorem 3.1), and for the space of negatively curved metrics (Theorem 4.1). While arbitrary small gaps are topologically generic, it is plausible that the gaps are not too small for almost every metric. One result in this direction is presented in Section 5.

Abstract:In 1992, Reid asked whether hyperbolic 3-manifolds with the same geodesic length spectra are necessarily commensurable. While this is known to be true for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds, the non-arithmetic case is still open. Building towards a negative answer to this question, Futer and Millichap recently constructed infinitely many pairs of non-commensurable, non-arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have the same volume and whose length spectra begin with the same first $m$ geodesic lengths. In the present paper, we show that this phenomenon is surprisingly common in the arithmetic setting. In particular, given any arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifold derived from a quaternion algebra, any finite subset $S$ of its geodesic length spectrum, and any $k \geq 2$, we produce infinitely many $k$-tuples of arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifolds which are pairwise non-commensurable, have geodesic length spectra containing $S$, and have volumes lying in an interval of (universally) bounded length. The main technical ingredient in our proof is a bounded gaps result for prime ideals in number fields lying in Chebotarev sets which extends recent work of Thorner.

Abstract:We show that elliptic Calabi--Yau threefolds form a bounded family. We also show that the same result holds for minimal terminal threefolds of Kodaira dimension 2, upon fixing the rate of growth of pluricanonical forms and the degree of a multisection of the Iitaka fibration. Both of these hypotheses are necessary to prove the boundedness of such a family.

Abstract:Some mathematical and physical aspects of superconformal string compactification in weighted projective space are discussed. In particular, we recast the path integral argument establishing the connection between Landau-Ginzburg conformal theories and Calabi-Yau string compactification in a geometric framework. We then prove that the naive expression for the vanishing of the first Chern class for a complete intersection (adopted from the smooth case) is sufficient to ensure that the resulting variety, which is generically singular, can be resolved to a smooth Calabi-Yau space. This justifies much analysis which has recently been expended on the study of Landau-Ginzburg models. Furthermore, we derive some simple formulae for the determination of the Witten index in these theories which are complimentary to those derived using semiclassical reasoning by Vafa. Finally, we also comment on the possible geometrical significance ofunorbifolded Landau-Ginzburg theories.

Abstract:Under simplified axioms on moduli spaces of pseudo-holomorphic curves, we show that weakly unobstructed Fukaya algebras of Floer-nontrivial Lagrangians in a compact symplectic manifold must have curvature in the spectrum of an operator introduced by Dubrovin, which acts on the big quantum cohomology. We use the example of the complex Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}(2,4)$ to illustrate a decoupling phenomenon, where the eigenvalues of finite energy truncations become simple under explicit bulk-deformations.

Bounds on spectral gaps of Hyperbolic spin surfaces

Abstract:We describe a method for constraining Laplacian and Dirac spectra of two dimensional compact orientable hyperbolic spin manifolds and orbifolds. The key ingredient is an infinite family of identities satisfied by the spectra. These spectral identities follow from the consistency between 1) the spectral decomposition of functions on the spin bundle into irreducible representations of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and 2) associativity of pointwise multiplication of functions. Applying semidefinite programming methods to our identities produces rigorous upper bounds on the Laplacian spectral gap as well as on the Dirac spectral gap conditioned on the former. In several examples, our bounds are nearly sharp; a numerical algorithm based on the Selberg trace formula shows that the $[0;3,3,5]$ orbifold, a particular surface with signature $[1;3]$, and the Bolza surface nearly saturate the bounds at genus $0$, $1$ and $2$ respectively. Under additional assumptions on the number of harmonic spinors carried by the spin-surface, we obtain more restrictive bounds on the Laplacian spectral gap. In particular, these bounds apply to hyperelliptic surfaces. We also determine the set of Laplacian spectral gaps attained by all compact orientable two-dimensional hyperbolic spin orbifolds. We show that this set is upper bounded by $12.13798$; this bound is nearly saturated by the $[0;3,3,5]$ orbifold, whose first non-zero Laplacian eigenvalue is $\lambda^{(0)}_1\approx 12.13623$.

Massive Spectrum in F-theory and the Distance Conjecture

Abstract:We investigate the massive states in F-theory compactification models, including BPS string junctions stretching between parallel 7-branes and KK modes. We obtain analytical results when there are two colliding bunches of 7-branes with a locally constant axiodilaton profile. In particular, in 8D F-theory setups when the 7-branes collide into a codimension-one $(4,6,12)$ singularity, we found an infinite light tower of BPS string junctions, which should match the light KK tower in the dual heterotic description. To exactly match with the results in the distance conjecture, we propose that the definition of 8D Planck mass should receive a large correction. We have also computed parts of KK modes in 8D F-theory in a simplified setup, as well as the BPS string junction spectrum in specific setups of 6D and 4D F-theory.

Abstract:We investigate gauge theories and matter contents in F-theory compactifications on families of genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds lacking a global section. To construct families of genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds that lack a global section, we consider two constructions: hypersurfaces in a product of projective spaces, and double covers of a product of projective spaces. We consider specific forms of defining equations for these genus-one fibrations, so that genus-one fibers possess complex multiplications of specific orders. These symmetries enable a detailed analysis of gauge theories. $E_6$, $E_7$, and $SU(5)$ gauge groups arise in some models. Discriminant components intersect with one another in the constructed models, and therefore, discriminant components contain matter curves. We deduce potential matter spectra and Yukawa couplings.

Abstract:We obtain analytic and numerical results for the non-perturbative amplitudes of topological string theory on arbitrary, compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. Our approach is based on the theory of resurgence and extends previous special results to the more general case. In particular, we obtain explicit trans-series solutions of the holomorphic anomaly equations. Our results predict the all orders, large genus asymptotics of the topological string free energies, which we test in detail against high genus perturbative series obtained recently in the compact case. We also provide additional evidence that the Stokes constants appearing in the resurgent structure are closely related to integer BPS invariants.

Abstract:In this note we define and study free global spectra: global spectra with non-trivial geometric fixed points only at the trivial group. We show that free global spectra often do not exist, and when they do, their homotopy groups satisfy strong divisibility conditions. As an application, we show that the universal free $G$-spectrum $EG_+$ does not admit a global refinement.

Abstract:We realize higher-form symmetries in F-theory compactifications on non-compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds. Central to this endeavour is the topology of the boundary of the non-compact elliptic fibration, as well as the explicit construction of relative 2-cycles in terms of Lefschetz thimbles. We apply the analysis to a variety of elliptic fibrations, including geometries where the discriminant of the elliptic fibration intersects the boundary. We provide a concrete realization of the 1-form symmetry group by constructing the associated charged line operator from the elliptic fibration. As an application we compute the symmetry topological field theories in the case of elliptic three-folds, which correspond to mixed anomalies in 5d and 6d theories.

Abstract:We study the spectrum of simplicial volume for closed manifolds with fixed fundamental group and relate the gap problem to rationality questions in bounded (co)homology. In particular, we show that in many cases this spectrum has a gap at zero. For such groups, this leads to corresponding gap results for the minimal volume entropy semi-norm and for the minimal volume entropy in dimension 4.

Abstract:The geodesic length spectrum of a complete, finite volume, hyperbolic 3-orbifold M is a fundamental invariant of the topology of M via Mostow-Prasad Rigidity. Motivated by this, the second author and Reid defined a two-dimensional analogue of the geodesic length spectrum given by the multiset of isometry types of totally geodesic, immersed, finite-area surfaces of M called the geometric genus spectrum. They showed that if $M$ is arithmetic and contains a totally geodesic surface, then the geometric genus spectrum of M determines its commensurability class. In this paper we define a coarser invariant called the totally geodesic area set given by the set of areas of surfaces in the geometric genus spectrum. We prove a number of results quantifying the extent to which non-commensurable arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifolds can have arbitrarily large overlaps in their totally geodesic area sets.

Boundary Conditions Matter: On The Spectrum Of Infinite Quantum Graphs

Abstract:We study the interplay between spectrum, geometry and boundary conditions for two distinguished self-adjoint realisations of the Laplacian on infinite metric graphs, the so-called Friedrichs and Neumann extensions. We introduce a new criterion for compactness of the resolvent and apply this to identify a transition from purely discrete to non-empty essential spectrum among a class of infinite metric graphs, a phenomenon that seems to have no known counterpart for Laplacians on Euclidean domains of infinite volume. In the case of discrete spectrum we then prove upper and lower bounds on eigenvalues, thus extending a number of bounds previously only known in the compact setting to infinite graphs. Some of our bounds, for instance in terms of the inradius, are new even on compact graphs.
