Abstract:We study random dynamical systems of certain continuous functions on the unit interval. We use bounded variation to provide sufficient conditions for unique ergodicity of these systems. Several classes of examples are provided.

Abstract:In this short note, we investigate non-invertible stochastic dynamical systems on the unit interval $[0, 1]$. We provide a handy condition for unique ergodicity for systems that are injective in mean. On the other hand, we give concrete examples where unique ergodicity fails.

Abstract:We study the uniform ergodicity property for non-invertible topological and measure-preserving dynamical systems. It is shown that for topological dynamical systems uniform ergodicity is equivalent to eventually periodicity and that for measure preserving systems it is equivalent to periodicity. To obtain our results, we prove a result on the long-term behavior of lattice homomorphisms that have $1$ isolated in its spectrum.

Abstract:We establish moduli of continuity and large increment properties for stationary increment Gaussian processes in order to study the path behavior of infinite series of independent Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. The existence and continuity of the latter infinite series type Gaussian processes are proved via showing that under a global condition their partial sum processes converge uniformly over finite intervals with probability one.

Abstract:In this paper we study the ergodic theory of a class of symbolic dynamical systems $(\O, T, \mu)$ where $T:{\O}\to \O$ the left shift transformation on $\O=\prod_0^\infty\{0,1\}$ and $\mu$ is a $\s$-finite $T$-invariant measure having the property that one can find a real number $d$ so that $\mu(\tau^d)=\infty$ but $\mu(\tau^{d-\epsilon})<\infty$ for all $\epsilon >0$, where $\tau$ is the first passage time function in the reference state 1. In particular we shall consider invariant measures $\mu$ arising from a potential $V$ which is uniformly continuous but not of summable variation. If $d>0$ then $\mu$ can be normalized to give the unique non-atomic equilibrium probability measure of $V$ for which we compute the (asymptotically) exact mixing rate, of order $n^{-d}$. We also establish the weak-Bernoulli property and a polynomial cluster property (decay of correlations) for observables of polynomial variation. If instead $d\leq 0$ then $\mu$ is an infinite measure with scaling rate of order $n^d$. Moreover, the analytic properties of the weighted dynamical zeta function and those of the Fourier transform of correlation functions are shown to be related to one another via the spectral properties of an operator-valued power series which naturally arises from a standard inducing procedure. A detailed control of the singular behaviour of these functions in the vicinity of their non-polar singularity at $z=1$ is achieved through an approximation scheme which uses generating functions of a suitable renewal process. In the perspective of differentiable dynamics, these are statements about the unique absolutely continuous invariant measure of a class of piecewise smooth interval maps with an indifferent fixed point.

Abstract:Abstract A natural generalization of interval exchange maps are linear involutions, first introduced by Danthony and Nogueira [Measured foliations on non-orientable surfaces. Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 26 (6) (1993), 645–664]. Recurrent train tracks with a single switch provide a subclass of linear involutions. We call such linear involutions non-classical interval exchanges. They are related to measured foliations on orientable flat surfaces. Non-classical interval exchanges can be studied as a dynamical system by considering Rauzy induction in this context. This gives a refinement process on the parameter space similar to Kerckhoff’s simplicial systems. We show that the refinement process gives an expansion that has a key dynamical property called uniform distortion . We use uniform distortion to prove normality of the expansion. Consequently, we prove an analog of Keane’s conjecture: almost every non-classical interval exchange is uniquely ergodic. Uniform distortion has been independently shown in [A. Avila and M. Resende. Abstract:We study a class of dynamical systems generated by random substitutions, which contains both intrinsically ergodic systems and instances with several measures of maximal entropy. In this class, we show that the measures of maximal entropy are classified by invariance under an appropriate symmetry relation. All measures of maximal entropy are fully supported and they are generally not Gibbs measures. We prove that there is a unique measure of maximal entropy if and only if an associated Markov chain is ergodic in inverse time. This Markov chain has finitely many states and all transition matrices are explicitly computable. Thereby, we obtain several sufficient conditions for intrinsic ergodicity that are easy to verify. A practical way to compute the topological entropy in terms of inflation words is extended from previous work to a more general geometric setting.

Abstract:A nonlinear system driven by band-limited Gaussian noise is shown to exhibit intermittent dynamics. The existence of intermittent bursts is revealed by high-pass filtering the system response with cut-on frequency where the random force vanishes. The statistics of stationary intermittency, i.e. the amplitude and time distribution of the bursts, is determined in detail by analogue simulation of a simple monostable system, the quartic oscillator, in the limit of strong nonlinearity.

Abstract:In this article, we pay attention to transitive dynamical systems having the shadowing property and the entropy functions are upper semi-continuous. As for these dynamical systems, when we consider ergodic optimization restricted on the subset of invariant measures whose metric entropy are equal to or greater than a given constant, we prove that for C0-generic real continuous functions, the ergodic optimization measure is unique, ergodic, has full support and has metric entropy equal to the given constant. Similar results also hold for suspension flows over transitive subshifts of finite type, Cr(r≥2)-generic geometric Lorenz attractors and C1-generic singular hyperbolic attractors.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider random dynamical systems formed by concatenating maps acting on the unit interval in an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) fashion. Considered as a stationary Markov process, the random dynamical system possesses a unique stationary measure . We consider a class of non-square-integrable observables , mostly of form , where is a non-recurrent point (in particular a non-periodic point) satisfying some other genericity conditions and, more generally, regularly varying observables with index . The two types of maps we concatenate are a class of piecewise expanding maps and a class of intermittent maps possessing an indifferent fixed point at the origin. Under conditions on the dynamics and , we establish Poisson limit laws, convergence of scaled Birkhoff sums to a stable limit law, and functional stable limit laws in both the annealed and quenched case. The scaling constants for the limit laws for almost every quenched realization are the same as those of the annealed case and determined by . This is in contrast to the scalings in quenched central limit theorems where the centering constants depend in a critical way upon the realization and are not the same for almost every realization.

Abstract:We show that for every topological dynamical system with the approximate product property, zero topological entropy is equivalent to unique ergodicity. Equivalence of minimality is also proved under a slightly stronger condition. Moreover, we show that unique ergodicity implies the approximate product property if the system has periodic points.

Abstract:We prove that skew products with the cocycle given by the function $f(x)=a(x-1/2)$ with $a\neq 0$ are ergodic for every ergodic symmetric IET in the base, thus giving the full characterization of ergodic extensions in this family. Moreover, we prove that under an additional natural assumption of unique ergodicity on the IET, we can replace $f$ with any differentiable function with a non-zero sum of jumps. Finally, by considering weakly mixing IETs instead of just ergodic, we show that the skew products with cocycle given by $f$ have infinite ergodic index.

Abstract:In this paper, we pay attention to a weaker version of Walters's question on the existence of non-uniform cocycles for uniquely ergodic minimal dynamical systems on non-degenerate connected spaces. We will classify such dynamical systems into three classes: not totally uniquely ergodic; totally uniquely ergodic but not topological weakly mixing; totally uniquely ergodic and topological weakly mixing. We will give an affirmative answer to such question for the first two classes. Also, we will show the existence of such dynamical systems in the first class with arbitrary topological entropy.

Abstract:We derive new variants of the quantitative Borel--Cantelli lemma and apply them to analysis of statistical properties for some dynamical systems. We consider intermittent maps of $(0,1]$ which have absolutely continuous invariant probability measures. In particular, we prove that every sequence of intervals with left endpoints uniformly separated from zero is the strong Borel--Cantelli sequence with respect to such map and invariant measure.

Abstract:We give conditions for minimality of extensions of a rotation of angle with one marked point, solving the problem for any prime N : for , these correspond to the Veech 1969 examples, for which a necessary and sufficient condition was not known yet. We provide also a word combinatorial criterion of minimality valid for general interval exchange transformations, which applies to extensions of any interval exchange transformation with any number of marked points. Then we give a condition for unique ergodicity of these extensions when the initial interval exchange transformation is linearly recurrent and there are one or two marked points.
