Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to present projective geometry in a synthetic, visual and intuitive style through the central notion of harmonicity which leads to harmonic curves. This presentation includes new results, unpublished proofs of some classic theorems and a slight reformulation of its axiomatics.

Abstract:A projective rectangle is like a projective plane that has different lengths in two directions. We develop harmonic conjugation in projective rectangles. We construct projective rectangles in some harmonic matroids (matroids where harmonic conjugation is defined on every collinear point triple), such as Desarguesian projective planes of finite characteristic, by harmonic conjugation from extended lift matroids based on finite fields. Similar results follow for countable fields with characteristic $0$. We also show that projective rectangles are almost harmonic matroids.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Abstract:In the study of the real projective plane, harmonic conjugates have an essential role, with applications to projectivities, involutions, and polarity. The construction of a harmonic conjugate requires the selection of auxiliary elements; it must be verified, with an invariance theorem, that the result is independent of the choice of these auxiliary elements. A constructive proof of the invariance theorem is given here; the methods used follow principles put forward by Errett Bishop.

Abstract:The classical theory of plane projective geometry is examined constructively, using both synthetic and analytic methods. The topics include Desargues's Theorem, harmonic conjugates, projectivities, involutions, conics, Pascal's Theorem, poles and polars. The axioms used for the synthetic treatment are constructive versions of the traditional axioms. The analytic construction is used to verify the consistency of the axioms; it is based on the usual model in three-dimensional Euclidean space, using only constructive properties of the real numbers. The methods of strict constructivism, following principles put forward by Errett Bishop, reveal the hidden constructive content of a portion of classical geometry. A number of open problems remain for future studies.

Abstract:We show that surfaces such that the natural projections of the unit normal bundles are harmonic morphisms are composed of minimal points and totally umbilical points. As its application, we find a harmonic map from the torus to the complex quadric in CP3 such that the projection map of the associated sphere bundle constructed by Gudmundsson is not a harmonic morphism. This contrasts sharply with the situation for holomorphic maps. We also establish sufficient conditions for reducing the codimension of an isometric immersion with conformal second fundamental form.

Abstract:An important result in the theory of harmonic maps is due to Benoist--Hulin: given a quasi-isometry $f:X\to Y$ between pinched Hadamard manifolds, there exists a unique harmonic map at a finite distance from $f$. Here we show existence of harmonic maps under a weaker condition on $f$, that we call non-collapsing -- we require that the following two conditions hold uniformly in $x\in X$: (1) average distance from $f(x)$ to $f(y)$ for $y$ on the sphere of radius $R$ centered at $x$ grows linearly with $R$ (2) the pre-image under $f$ of small cones with apex $f(x)$ have low harmonic measures on spheres centered at $x$. Using these ideas, we also continue the previous work of the author on existence of harmonic maps that are at a finite distance from projections to certain convex sets. We show this existence in a pinched negative curvature setting, when the convex set is large enough. For hyperbolic spaces, this includes the convex hulls of open sets in the sphere at infinity with sufficiently regular boundary.

Abstract:We initiate the study of a class of real plane algebraic curves which we call expressive. These are the curves whose defining polynomial has the smallest number of critical points allowed by the topology of the set of real points of a curve. This concept can be viewed as a global version of the notion of a real morsification of an isolated plane curve singularity. We prove that a plane curve $C$ is expressive if (a) each irreducible component of $C$ can be parametrized by real polynomials (either ordinary or trigonometric), (b) all singular points of $C$ in the affine plane are ordinary hyperbolic nodes, and (c) the set of real points of $C$ in the affine plane is connected. Conversely, an expressive curve with real irreducible components must satisfy conditions (a)-(c), unless it exhibits some exotic behaviour at infinity. We describe several constructions that produce expressive curves, and discuss a large number of examples, including: arrangements of lines, parabolas, and circles; Chebyshev and Lissajous curves; hypotrochoids and epitrochoids; and much more.

Abstract:We define and study the harmonic curves on domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$ into the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$. These are the $C^2$-regular mappings which are critical points of the second Dirichlet energy and satisfy the weak isotropicity condition. We investigate the geometry of such curves including the comparison and maximum principles, the Harnack inequalities, the Liouville theorems, the existence results, the Phragmèn-Lindelöf theorem, as well as the three spheres theorem.

Abstract:We prove that harmonic maps into Euclidean buildings, which are not necessarily locally finite, have singular sets of Hausdorff codimension 2, extending the locally finite regularity result of Gromov and Schoen. As an application, we prove superrigidity for algebraic groups over fields with non-Archimedean valuation, thereby generalizing the rank 1 $p$-adic superrigidity results of Gromov and Schoen and casting the Bader-Furman generalization of Margulis' higher rank superrigidity result in a geometric setting. We also prove an existence theorem for a pluriharmonic map from a Kähler manifold to a Euclidean building.

Abstract:The focus of this paper revolves around investigating the harmonicity aspects of various mappings. Firstly, we explore the harmonicity of the canonical projection π : TM → M, where M denotes a Riemannian manifold and TM its associated tangent bundle. Additionally, we delve into the harmonicity of vector fields ξ ∈ χ (M) , treated as mappings from M to TM. Moreover, our exploration extends to situations such as the case involving the map π : (TM, ̃g) → (M2n, J, g), where (M2n, J, g) represents an anti-paraKähler manifold and (TM, ̃g) its tangent bundle with the ciconia metric. In this context, we delve into the harmonicity relations between the ciconia metric ̃g and the Sasaki metric Sg, examining their mutual interactions. Furthermore, we delve into the Schoutan-Van Kampen connection and the Vranceanu connection, both associated with the Levi-Civita connection of the ciconia metric. We also undertake the computation of the mean connections for the Schoutan-Van Kampen and Vranceanu connections, thereby shedding light on their properties. Finally, our investigation extends to the second fundamental form of the identity mapping from (TM, ̃g) to (TM,∇m) and (TM, ∇∗m). Here ∇m and ∇∗m represent the mean connections associated with the Schoutan-Van Kampen and Vranceanu connections, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the associated family of harmonic maps $\mathcal{F}: M \rightarrow G/K$ from a Riemann surface $M$ into inner symmetric spaces of compact or non-compact type which are either algebraic or totally symmetric. These notions are the two components of the definition of a harmonic map of finite uniton number, as stated by [2]. We finish this paper by comparing these to notions and by stating a conjecture.

Abstract:We consider practical aspects of reconstructing planar curves with prescribed Euclidean or affine curvatures. These curvatures are invariant under the special Euclidean group and the equi-affine groups, respectively, and play an important role in computer vision and shape analysis. We discuss and implement algorithms for such reconstruction, and give estimates on how close reconstructed curves are relative to the closeness of their curvatures in appropriate metrics. Several illustrative examples are provided.
