Abstract:We show that iterating Nash blowups resolve the singularities of normal toric surfaces satisfying the following property: the minimal generating set of the corresponding semigroup is contained in one or two segments. We also provide examples with an arbitrary number of segments for which the same result holds.

Abstract:We construct a series of blowups $(\widetilde M_i,\pi_i)_{i\in \mathbb N_0}$ of a singular foliation by applying to the universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid of a singular foliation the so-called Nash modification. For $i=0$, we recover a blowup introduced Sinan Sertöz, and for $i=1$, we recover a notion due to Omar Mohsen. One of the important features is that any singular foliation becomes a Debord foliation (= projective singular foliation) after one blowup. Examples are also given.

Abstract:We study the normalized volume of toric singularities. As it turns out, there is a close relation to the notion of (nonsymmetric) Mahler volume from convex geometry. This observation allows us to use standard tools from convex geometry, such as the Blaschke–Santaló inequality and Radon's theorem to prove nontrivial facts about the normalized volume in the toric setting. For example, we prove that for every ε>0 there are only finitely many Q ‐Gorenstein toric singularities with normalized volume at least ε . From this result it directly follows that there are also only finitely many toric Sasaki–Einstein manifolds of volume at least ε in each dimension. Additionally, we show that the normalized volume of every toric singularity is bounded from above by that of the rational double point of the same dimension. Finally, we discuss certain bounds of the normalized volume in terms of topological invariants of resolutions of the singularity. We establish two upper bounds in terms of the Euler characteristic and of the first Chern class, respectively. We show that a lower bound, which was conjectured earlier by He, Seong, and Yau, is closely related to the nonsymmetric Mahler conjecture in convex geometry.

Abstract:In this work, we describe a prenormal form for the generators of the semigroup of a toric variety $X \subset \mathbb{C}^p$ with isolated singularity at the origin and smooth normalization. A complete description of the semigroup is given when $X$ is a variety of dimension $n$ in $\mathbb{C}^{2n}$. Moreover, for toric surfaces in $\mathbb{C}^4$, we provide a set of generators of the ideal $I$ defining $X$.

Abstract:Any Lie algebroid $A$ admits a Nash-type blow-up $\mathrm{Nash}(A)$ that sits in a nice short exact sequence of Lie algebroids $0\rightarrow K\rightarrow \mathrm{Nash}(A)\rightarrow \mathcal{D}\rightarrow 0$ with $K$ a Lie algebra bundle and $\mathcal{D}$ a Lie algebroid whose anchor map is injective on an open dense subset. The base variety is a blowup determined by the singular foliation of $A$. We provide concrete examples. Moreover, we extend the construction following Mohsen's to singular subalgebroids in the sense of Androulidakis-Zambon.

Abstract:Monotone polytopes, also known as smooth reflexive polytopes, are the polytopes associated to monotone symplectic toric manifolds and Gorenstein Fano toric varieties. We first show that the only monotone polytopes admitting blow-ups at vertices are the simplex and the result of a codimension-two blow-up in it (this is the polyhedral version of a result of Bonavero from 2002). Then we show that the $n$-simplex admits disjoint blow-ups at faces if and only if the faces are disjoint and have dimensions adding up to $n-1$ or $n-2$. These results answer a question posed by Dusa McDuff in 2011.

Solutions to SU(n+1) Toda system with cone singularities via toric curves on compact Riemann surfaces

Abstract:On a compact Riemann surface (X) with finite punctures (P_1, …, P_k), we define toric curves as multi-valued, totally unramified holomorphic maps to (ℙ^n) with monodromy in a maximal torus of (PSU(n+1)). Toric solutions for the (SU(n+1)) system on X∖{P_1,…, P_k} are recognized by their associated toric curves in (ℙ^n). We introduce a character n-ensemble as an (n)-tuple of meromorphic one-forms with simple poles and purely imaginary periods, generating toric curves on (X) minus finitely many points. We establish on X a correspondence between character n-ensembles and toric solutions to the (SU(n+1)) system with finitely many cone singularities. Our approach not only broadens seminal solutions for up to two cone singularities on the Riemann sphere, as classified by Jost-Wang (Int. Math. Res. Not., (6):277-290, 2002) and Lin-Wei-Ye (Invent. Math., 190(1):169-207, 2012), but also advances beyond the limits of Lin-Yang-Zhong's existence theorems (J. Differential Geom., 114(2):337-391, 2020) by introducing a new solution class.

Abstract:We begin the study of Lipschitz saturation for germs of toric singularities. By looking at their associated analytic algebras, we prove that if (X,0) is a germ of toric singularity with smooth normalization then its Lipschitz saturation is again toric. Finally we show how to calculate the Lipschitz saturation for some families of toric singularities starting from the semigroup that defines them.

Abstract:For a germ $(X,0) \subset (\mathbb{C}^n,0)$ of reduced, equidimensional complex analytic singularity its Nash modification can be constructed as an analytic subvariety $ Z \subset \mathbb{C}^n \times G(k,n)$. We give a characterization of the subvarieties of $\mathbb{C}^n \times G(k,n)$ that are the Nash modification of its image under the projection to $\mathbb{C}^n$. This result generalizes the characterization of conormal varieties as Legendrian subvarieties of $\mathbb{C}^n \times \check{\mathbb{P}}^{n-1}$ with its canonical contact structure. As a by-product we define the $d$-conormal space of $(X,0)$ for any $d \in \{k, \ldots, n-1\}$ which is a generalization of both the Nash modification and the conormal variety of $(X,0)$.

Abstract:The Nash blowing-up (or modification) of an algebraic variety $X$ is a canonical process that produces a proper, birational morphism $\pi : X' \to X$ of varieties. It is expected that the singularities of $X'$ will be better than those of $X$. In the mid-1970's, it was proved that in characteristic zero, ${\pi}$ is an isomorphism if and only if $X$ is nonsingular, which is false in positive characteristic. The focus of this article is on several subsequent studies on this subject.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal X\to\mathbb D$ be a flat family of projective complex 3-folds over a disc $\mathbb D$ with smooth total space $\mathcal X$ and smooth general fibre $\mathcal X_t,$ and whose special fiber $\mathcal X_0$ has double normal crossing singularities, in particular, $\mathcal X_0=A\cup B$, with $A$, $B$ smooth threefolds intersecting transversally along a smooth surface $R=A\cap B.$ In this paper we first study the limit singularities of a $\delta$--nodal surface in the general fibre $S_t\subset\mathcal X_t$, when $S_t$ tends to the central fibre in such a way its $\delta$ nodes tend to distinct points in $R$. The result is that the limit surface $S_0$ is in general the union $S_0=S_A\cup S_B$, with $S_A\subset A$, $S_B\subset B$ smooth surfaces, intersecting on $R$ along a $\delta$-nodal curve $C=S_A\cap R=S_B\cap B$. Then we prove that, under suitable conditions, a surface $S_0=S_A\cup S_B$ as above indeed deforms to a $\delta$--nodal surface in the general fibre of $\mathcal X\to\mathbb D$. As applications we prove that there are regular irreducible components of the Severi variety of degree $d$ surfaces with $\delta$ nodes in $\mathbb P^3$, for every $\delta\leq {d-1\choose 2}$ and of the Severi variety of complete intersection $\delta$-nodal surfaces of type $(d,h)$, with $d\geq h-1$ in $\mathbb P^4$, for every $\delta\leq {{d+3}\choose 3}-{{d-h+1}\choose 3}-1.$

Locally Trivial Deformations of Toric Varieties

Abstract:We study locally trivial deformations of toric varieties from a combinatorial point of view. For any fan $\Sigma$, we construct a deformation functor $\mathrm{Def}_\Sigma$ by considering Čech zero-cochains on certain simplicial complexes. We show that under appropriate hypotheses, $\mathrm{Def}_\Sigma$ is isomorphic to $\mathrm{Def}'_{X_\Sigma}$, the functor of locally trivial deformations for the toric variety $X_\Sigma$ associated to $\Sigma$. In particular, for any complete toric variety $X$ that is smooth in codimension $2$ and $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial in codimension $3$, there exists a fan $\Sigma$ such that $\mathrm{Def}_\Sigma$ is isomorphic to $\mathrm{Def}_X$, the functor of deformations of $X$. We apply these results to give a new criterion for a smooth complete toric variety to have unobstructed deformations, and to compute formulas for higher order obstructions, generalizing a formula of Ilten and Turo for the cup product. We use the functor $\mathrm{Def}_\Sigma$ to explicitly compute the deformation spaces for a number of toric varieties, and provide examples exhibiting previously unobserved phenomena. In particular, we classify exactly which toric threefolds arising as iterated $\mathbb{P}^1$-bundles have unobstructed deformation space.

Abstract:In the previous work, we study the closure of a complex subtorus in a toric manifold given by the data of an affine subspace. We call it torus-equivariantly embedded toric manifold when the closure of a complex subtorus is a smooth complex submanifold. In this paper, we clearify the condition for nonsingularity of the closure of a complex subtorus in terms of polytopes. The main result is a generalization of Delzant theorem to the case of torus-equivariantly embedded toric hypersurfaces.

Abstract:We study certain toric Gorenstein varieties with isolated singularities which are the quotient spaces of generic unimodular representations by the one-dimensional torus, or by the product of the one-dimensional torus with a finite abelian group. Based on the works of Špenko and Van den Bergh [Invent. Math. 210 (2017), no. 1, 3-67] and Mori and Ueyama [Adv. Math. 297 (2016), 54-92], we show that the singularity categories of these varieties admit tilting objects, and hence are triangle equivalent to the perfect categories of some finite dimensional algebras.
