Abstract:We study density and partition properties of polynomial equations in prime variables. We consider equations of the form $a_1h(x_1) + \cdots + a_sh(x_s)=b$, where the $a_i$ and $b$ are fixed coefficients, and $h$ is an arbitrary integer polynomial of degree $d$. Provided there are at least $(1+o(1))d^2$ variables, we establish necessary and sufficient criteria for this equation to have a monochromatic non-constant solution with respect to any finite colouring of the prime numbers. We similarly characterise when such equations admit solutions over any set of primes with positive relative upper density. In both cases, we obtain counting results which provide asymptotically sharp lower bounds for the number of monochromatic or dense solutions in primes. Our main new ingredient is a uniform lower bound on the cardinality of a prime polynomial Bohr set.

Abstract:Abstract Let K be a cyclic number field of odd degree over $${\mathbb {Q}}$$ Q with odd narrow class number, such that 2 is inert in $$K/{\mathbb {Q}}$$ K / Q . We define a family of number fields $$\{K(p)\}_p$$ { K ( p ) } p , depending on K and indexed by the rational primes p that split completely in $$K/{\mathbb {Q}}$$ K / Q , in which p is always ramified of degree 2. Conditional on a standard conjecture on short character sums, the density of such rational primes p that exhibit one of two possible ramified factorizations in $$K(p)/{\mathbb {Q}}$$ K ( p ) / Q is strictly between 0 and 1 and is given explicitly as a formula in terms of the degree of the extension $$K/{\mathbb {Q}}$$ K / Q . Our results are unconditional in the cubic case. Our proof relies on a detailed study of the joint distribution of spins of prime ideals.

Abstract:The study of symmetric structures is a new trend in Ramsey theory. Recently in [7], Di Nasso initiated a systematic study of symmetrization of classical Ramsey theoretical results, and proved a symmetric version of several Ramsey theoretic results. In this paper Di Nasso asked if his method could be adapted to find new non-linear Diophantine equations that are partition regular [7,Final remarks (4)]. By analyzing additive, multiplicative, and symmetric large sets, we construct new partition regular equations that give a first affirmative answer to this question. A special case of our result shows that if $P$ is a polynomial with no constant term then the equation $x+P(y-x)=z+w+zw$, where $y\neq x$ is partition regular. Also we prove several new monochromatic patterns involving additive, multiplicative, and symmetric structures. Throughout our work, we use tools from the Algebra of the Stone-Čech Compactifications of discrete semigroups.

Abstract:We study systems of functional equations whose solutions can be parameterized in function of one variable; our main result proves that the partition regularity (PR) of such systems can be completely characterized by the existence of constant solutions. As applications of this result, we prove the following: (1) A complete characterization of the PR of systems of Diophantine equations in two variables over $\mathbb{N}$. In particular, we prove that the only infinitely PR irreducible equation in two variables is $x=y$; (2) PR of $S$-unit equations and the failure of Rado's Theorem for finitely generated multiplicative subgroups of $\mathbb{C}$; and (3) a complete characterization of the PR of two classes of polynomial exponential equations.

Some remarks on off-diagonal Ramsey numbers for vector spaces over $\mathbb{F}_{2}$

Abstract:For every positive integer $d$, we show that there must exist an absolute constant $c > 0$ such that the following holds: for any integer $n \geq cd^{7}$ and any red-blue coloring of the one-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$, there must exist either a $d$-dimensional subspace for which all of its one-dimensional subspaces get colored red or a $2$-dimensional subspace for which all of its one-dimensional subspaces get colored blue. This answers recent questions of Nelson and Nomoto, and confirms that for any even plane binary matroid $N$, the class of $N$-free, claw-free binary matroids is polynomially $\chi$-bounded. Our argument will proceed via a reduction to a well-studied additive combinatorics problem, originally posed by Green: given a set $A \subset \mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$ with density $\alpha \in [0,1]$, what is the largest subspace that we can find in $A+A$? Our main contribution to the story is a new result for this problem in the regime where $1/\alpha$ is large with respect to $n$, which utilizes ideas from the recent breakthrough paper of Kelley and Meka on sets of integers without three-term arithmetic progressions.

Abstract:An $n$-vertex graph is called $C$-Ramsey if it has no clique or independent set of size $C\log_2 n$ (i.e., if it has near-optimal Ramsey behavior). In this paper, we study edge-statistics in Ramsey graphs, in particular obtaining very precise control of the distribution of the number of edges in a random vertex subset of a $C$-Ramsey graph. This brings together two ongoing lines of research: the study of "random-like" properties of Ramsey graphs and the study of small-ball probabilities for low-degree polynomials of independent random variables. The proof proceeds via an "additive structure" dichotomy on the degree sequence, and involves a wide range of different tools from Fourier analysis, random matrix theory, the theory of Boolean functions, probabilistic combinatorics, and low-rank approximation. One of the consequences of our result is the resolution of an old conjecture of Erdős and McKay, for which Erdős offered one of his notorious monetary prizes.

Abstract:Building on recent work of Mattheus and Verstraëte, we establish a general connection between Ramsey numbers of the form $r(F,t)$ for $F$ a fixed graph and a variant of the Zarankiewicz problem asking for the maximum number of 1s in an $m$ by $n$ $0/1$-matrix that does not have any matrix from a fixed finite family $\mathcal{L}(F)$ derived from $F$ as a submatrix. As an application, we give new lower bounds for the Ramsey numbers $r(C_5,t)$ and $r(C_7,t)$, namely, $r(C_5,t) = \tilde\Omega(t^{\frac{10}{7}})$ and $r(C_7,t) = \tilde\Omega(t^{\frac{5}{4}})$. We also show how the truth of a plausible conjecture about Zarankiewicz numbers would allow an approximate determination of $r(C_{2\ell+1}, t)$ for any fixed integer $\ell \geq 2$.

On the Weihrauch degree of the additive Ramsey theorem

Abstract:We characterize the strength, in terms of Weihrauch degrees, of certain problems related to Ramsey-like theorems concerning colourings of the rationals and of the natural numbers. The theorems we are chiefly interested in assert the existence of almost-homogeneous sets for colourings of pairs of rationals respectively natural numbers satisfying properties determined by some additional algebraic structure on the set of colours. In the context of reverse mathematics, most of the principles we study are equivalent to $\Sigma^0_2$-induction over $\mathrm{RCA}_0$. The associated problems in the Weihrauch lattice are related to $\mathrm{TC}_\mathbb{N}^*$, $(\mathrm{LPO}')^*$ or their product, depending on their precise formalizations.

Abstract:We show that the Ramsey theory of block sequences in infinite-dimensional discrete vector spaces can be parametrized by perfect sets. As special cases, we prove combinatorial dichotomies for definable families of partitions and linear transformations on those spaces. We also consider the extent to which analogues of selective ultrafilters in this setting are preserved by Sacks forcing.

Abstract:The $(k,i)$-singular overpartitions, combinatorial objects introduced by Andrews in 2015, are known to satisfy Ramanujan-type congruences modulo any power of prime coprime to $6k$. In this paper we consider the parity of the number $\overline{C}_{k,i}(n)$ of $(k,i)$-singular overpartitions of $n$. In particular, we give a sufficient condition on even values of $k$ so that the values of $\overline{C}_{4k,k}(n)$ are almost always even. Furthermore, we show that for odd values of $k \leq 23$, $k\neq 19$, certain subsequences of $\overline{C}_{4k,k}(n)$ are almost always even.

A Chebotarev Density Theorem over Local Fields

Abstract:We compute the $p$-adic densities of points with a given splitting type along a (generically) finite map, analogous to the classical Chebotarev theorem over number fields and function fields. Under some mild hypotheses, we prove that these densities satisfy a functional equation in the size of the residue field. This functional equation is a direct reflection of Poincaré duality in étale cohomology. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Bhargava, Cremona, Fisher, and Gajović on factorization densities of p-adic polynomials. The key tool is the notion of admissible pairs associated to a group, which we use as an invariant of the inertia and decomposition action of a local field on the fibers of the finite map. We compute the splitting densities by Möbius inverting certain p-adic integrals along the poset of admissible pairs. The conjecture on factorization densities follows immediately for tamely ramified primes from our general results. We reduce the complete conjecture (including the wild primes) to the existence of an explicit "Tate-type" resolution of the "resultant locus" over the integers and complete the proof of the conjecture by constructing this resolution.

Abstract:In this thesis, we present quantitative Ramsey-type results in the setting of finite sets that are equipped with a partial order, so-called posets. A prominent example of a poset is the Boolean lattice $Q_n$, which consists of all subsets of $\{1,\dots,n\}$, ordered by inclusion. For posets $P$ and $Q$, the poset Ramsey number $R(P,Q)$ is the smallest $N$ such that no matter how the elements of $Q_N$ are colored in blue and red, there is either an induced subposet isomorphic to $P$ in which every element is colored blue, or an induced subposet isomorphic to $Q$ in which every element is colored red. The central focus of this thesis is to investigate $R(P,Q_n)$, where $P$ is fixed and $n$ grows large. Our results contribute to an active area of discrete mathematics, which studies the existence of large homogeneous substructures in host structures with local constraints, introduced for graphs by Erdős and Hajnal. We provide an asymptotically tight bound on $R(P,Q_n)$ for $P$ from several classes of posets, and show a dichotomy in the asymptotic behavior of $R(P,Q_n)$, depending on whether $P$ contains a subposet isomorphic to one of two specific posets. A fundamental question in the study of poset Ramsey numbers is to determine the asymptotic behavior of $R(Q_n,Q_n)$ for large $n$. In this dissertation, we present improvements on the known lower and upper bound on $R(Q_n,Q_n)$. Moreover, we explore variations of the poset Ramsey setting, including Erdős-Hajnal-type questions when the small forbidden poset has a non-monochromatic color pattern, and so-called weak poset Ramsey numbers, which are concerned with non-induced subposets.

Abstract:Many natural notions of additive and multiplicative largeness arise from results in Ramsey theory. In this paper, we explain the relationships between these notions for subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ and in more general ring-theoretic structures. We show that multiplicative largeness begets additive largeness in three ways and give a collection of examples demonstrating the optimality of these results. We also give a variety of applications arising from the connection between additive and multiplicative largeness. For example, we show that given any $n, k \in \mathbb{N}$, any finite set with fewer than $n$ elements in a sufficiently large finite field can be translated so that each of its elements becomes a non-zero $k^{\text{th}}$ power. We also prove a theorem concerning Diophantine approximation along multiplicatively syndetic subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ and a theorem showing that subsets of positive upper Banach density in certain multiplicative sub-semigroups of $\mathbb{N}$ of zero density contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Along the way, we develop a new characterization of upper Banach density in a wide class of amenable semigroups and make explicit the uniformity in recurrence theorems from measure theoretic and topological dynamics. This in turn leads to strengthened forms of classical theorems of Szemerédi and van der Waerden on arithmetic progressions.

Generalized Ramsey numbers at the linear and quadratic thresholds

Abstract:The generalized Ramsey number $f(n, p, q)$ is the smallest number of colors needed to color the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ so that every $p$-clique spans at least $q$ colors. Erdős and Gyárfás showed that $f(n, p, q)$ grows linearly in $n$ when $p$ is fixed and $q=q_{\text{lin}}(p):=\binom p2-p+3$. Similarly they showed that $f(n, p, q)$ is quadratic in $n$ when $p$ is fixed and $q=q_{\text{quad}}(p):=\binom p2-\frac p2+2$. In this note we improve on the known estimates for $f(n, p, q_{\text{lin}})$ and $f(n, p, q_{\text{quad}})$. Our proofs involve establishing a significant strengthening of a previously known connection between $f(n, p, q)$ and another extremal problem first studied by Brown, Erdős and Sós, as well as building on some recent progress on this extremal problem by Delcourt and Postle and by Shangguan. Also, our upper bound on $f(n, p, q_{\text{lin}})$ follows from an application of the recent forbidden submatchings method of Delcourt and Postle.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a quantitative version of the statement that every nonempty finite subset of ℕ + is a set of quadratic residues for infinitely many primes of the form [ n c ] with 1 ≤ c ≤ 243/205. Correspondingly, we can obtain a similar result for the case of quadratic non-residues under reasonable assumptions. These results generalize the previous ones obtained by Wright in certain aspects.
Exponential Schur and Hindman Theorem in Ramsey Theory

Abstract:Answering a conjecture of A. Sisto, J. Sahasrabudhe proved the exponential version of the Schur theorem: for every finite coloring of the naturals, there exists a monochromatic copy of $\{x,y,x^y:x\neq y\},$ which initiates the study of exponential Ramsey theory in arithmetic combinatorics. In this article, We first give two short proofs of the exponential Schur theorem, one using Zorn's lemma and another using $IP_r^\star$ van der Waerden's theorem. Then using the polynomial van der Waerden theorem iteratively we give a proof of the exponential Hindman theorem. Then applying our results we prove for every natural number $m,n$ the equation $x_n^{x_{n-1}^{\cdot^{\cdot^{\cdot^{x_1}}}}}=y_1\cdots y_m$ is partition regular, which can be considered as the exponential version of a more general version of the P. Csikvári, K. Gyarmati, and A. Sárközy conjecture, which was solved by V. Bergelson and N. Hindman independently. As a consequence of our results, we also prove that for every finite partition of $\mathbb{N},$ there exists two different sequences $\langle x_n\rangle_n$ and $\langle y_n\rangle_n$ such that both the multiplicative and exponential version of Hindman theorem generated by these sequences resp. are monochromatic, whereas in the counterpart in the finitary case, J. Sahasrabudhe proved that both sequences are the same. Our result can be considered as an exponential analog to the result of V. Bergelson and N. Hindman. We also prove that a large class of ultrafilters with certain properties do not exist, which could give us direct proof of the exponential Schur theorem. This result can be thought of as partial evidence of the nonexistence of Galvin-Glazer's proof of the exponential Hindman theorem.

In this paper we prove several results on Ramsey numbers [math] for a fixed graph [math] and a large graph [math], in particular for [math]. These results extend earlier work of Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau, and Schelp and of Balister, Schelp, and Simonovits on so-called Ramsey size-linear graphs. Among other results, we show that if [math] is a subdivision of [math] with at least six vertices, then [math] for every graph [math]. We also conjecture that if [math] is a connected graph with [math], then [math]. The case [math] was proved by Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau, and Schelp. We prove the case [math].

Lower Bounds for Book Ramsey Numbers

Abstract:We prove new bounds for Ramsey numbers for book graphs $B_n$. In particular, we show that $R(B_{n-1},B_n) = 4n-1$ for an infinite family of $n$ using a block-circulant construction similar to Paley graphs. We obtain improved bounds for several other values of $R(B_r,B_s)$ using different block-circulant graphs from SAT and integer programming (IP) solvers. Finally, we enumerate the number of critical graphs for $R(B_r,B_s)$ for small $r$ and $s$ using SAT modulo symmetries (SMS).
