Abstract:We determine the asymptotic behavior of the coefficients of Hecke polynomials. In particular, this allows us to determine signs of these coefficients when the level or the weight is sufficiently large. In all but finitely many cases, this also verifies a conjecture on the nanvanishing of the coefficients of Hecke polynomials.

Abstract:Let $T_m(N, k, \chi)$ be the $m$-th Hecke operator of level $N$, weight $k \ge 2$, and nebentypus $\chi$, where $N$ is coprime to $m$. We first show that for any given $m \ge 1$, the second coefficient of the characteristic polynomial of $T_m(N, k, \chi)$ is nonvanishing for all but finitely many triples $(N,k,\chi)$. Furthermore, for $\chi$ trivial and any fixed $m$, we determine the sign of the second coefficient for all but finitely many pairs $(N,k)$. Finally, for $\chi$ trivial and $m=3,4$, we compute the sign of the second coefficient for all pairs $(N,k)$.

Abstract:We prove asymptotics and study sign patterns for coefficients in expansions of elements in the Habiro ring which satisfy a strange identity. As an application, we prove asymptotics and discuss positivity for the generalized Fishburn numbers which arise from the Kontsevich-Zagier series associated to the colored Jones polynomial for a family of torus knots. This extends Zagier's result on asymptotics for the Fishburn numbers.

Abstract:We prove a number of unconditional statistical results of the Hecke coefficients for unitary cuspidal representations of $\operatorname{GL}(2)$ over number fields. Using partial bounds on the size of the Hecke coefficients, instances of Langlands functoriality, and properties of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions, we obtain bounds on the set of places where linear combinations of Hecke coefficients are negative. Under a mild functoriality assumption we extend these methods to $\operatorname{GL}(n)$. As an application, we obtain a result related to a question of Serre about the occurrence of large Hecke eigenvalues of Maass forms. Furthermore, in the cases where the Ramanujan conjecture is satisfied, we obtain distributional results of the Hecke coefficients at places varying in certain congruence or Galois classes.

Abstract:By elaborating a two-dimensional Selberg sieve with asymptotics and equidistributions of Kloosterman sums from ℓ-adic cohomology, as well as a Bombieri–Vinogradov type mean value theorem for Kloosterman sums in arithmetic progressions, it is proved that for any given primitive Hecke–Maass cusp form of trivial nebentypus, the eigenvalue of the n-th Hecke operator does not coincide with the Kloosterman sum Kl(1,n) for infinitely many squarefree n with at most 100 prime factors. This provides a partial negative answer to a problem of Katz on modular structures of Kloosterman sums.

Abstract:In the article, we consider a question concerning the estimation of summatory function of the Fourier coefficients of Hecke eigenforms indexed by a sparse set of integers. In particular, we provide an estimate for the following sum; \begin{equation*} \begin{split} S(f, \mathcal{Q}; X ) &:= \sideset{}{^{\flat }}\sum_{n= \mathcal{Q}(\underline{x}) \le X \atop \gcd(n,N) =1 } \lambda_{f}(n), \end{split}\end{equation*} where $\flat$ means that sum runs over the square-free positive integers, $\lambda_{f}(n)$ denotes the normalised $n^{\rm th}$ Fourier coefficients of a Hecke eigenform $f$ of integral weight $k$ for the congruence subgroup $\Gamma_{0}(N)$ and $\mathcal{Q}$ is a primitive integral positive-definite binary quadratic forms of fixed discriminant $D<0$ with the class number $h(D)=1$. As a consequence, we determine the size, in terms of conductor of associated $L$-function, for the first sign change of Hecke eigenvalues indexed by the integers which are represented by $\mathcal{Q}$. This work is an improvement and generalisation of the previous results.

Sign changes of short character sums and real zeros of Fekete polynomials

Abstract:We discuss a general approach producing quantitative bounds on the number of sign changes of the weighted sums $$\sum_{n\le x}f(n)w_n$$ where $f:\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{R}$ is a family of multiplicative functions and $w_n\in\mathbb{R}$ are certain <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://weights.As" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> a consequence, we show that for a typical fundamental discriminant $D,$ the partial sums of the real character $\chi_D$ change sign $\gg (\log\log D)/\log\log\log \log D$ times on very short initial interval (which goes beyond the range in Vinogradov's conjecture). We also prove that the number of real zeros (localized away from $1$) of the Fekete polynomial associated to a typical fundamental discriminant $D$ is $\gg \frac{\log\log D}{\log\log\log\log D}.$ This comes close to establishing a conjecture of Baker and Montgomery which predicts $\asymp \log \log D$ real zeros. Finally, the same approach shows that almost surely for large $x\ge 1$, the partial sums $\sum_{n\le y}f(n)$ of a (Rademacher) random multiplicative function exhibit $\gg \log \log x/\log \log\log\log x$ sign changes on the interval $[1,x].$ These results rely crucially on uniform quantitative estimates for the joint distribution of $-\frac{L'}{L}(s, \chi_D)$ at several points $s$ in the vicinity of the central point $s=1/2$, as well as concentration results for $\log L(s,\chi_D)$ in the same range, which we establish. In the second part of the paper, we obtain, for large families of discriminants, ``non-trivial" upper bounds on the number of real zeros of Fekete polynomials, breaking the square root bound. Finally, we construct families of discriminants with associated Fekete polynomials having no zeros away from $1.$

Abstract:Let $T_m(N,2k)$ denote the $m$-th Hecke operator on the space $S_{2k}(\Gamma_0(N))$ of cuspidal modular forms of weight $2k$ and level $N$. In this paper, we study the non-repetition of the second coefficient of the characteristic polynomial of $T_m(N,2k)$. We obtain results in the horizontal aspect (where $m$ varies), the vertical aspect (where $k$ varies), and the level aspect (where $N$ varies). Finally, we use these non-repetition results to extend a result of Vilardi and Xue on distinguishing Hecke eigenforms.

Abstract:Consider the positive d-dimensional lattice ℤ + d (d≥2) with partial ordering ≤, let {X K ; K ε ℤ + d } be i.i.d. random variables taking values in a real separable Hilbert space (H, ‖·‖) with mean zero and covariance operator Σ, and set partial sums S N =ΣK≤NX K , K, N ε ℤ + d . Under some moment conditions, we obtain the precise asymptoties of a kind of weighted infinite series for partial sums S N as ɛ ↘0 by using the truncation and approximation methods. The results are related to the convergence rates of the law of the logarithm in Hilbert space, and they also extend the results of (Gut and Spǎtaru, 2003).
Nonvanishing of Second Coefficients of Hecke Polynomials on the Newspace

Abstract:For $m \geq 1$, let $N \geq 1$ be coprime to $m$, $k \geq 2$, and $\chi$ be a Dirichlet character modulo $N$ with $\chi(-1)=(-1)^k$. Then let $T_m^{\text{new}}(N,k,\chi)$ denote the restriction of the $m$-th Hecke operator to the space $S_k^{\text{new}}(\Gamma_0(N), \chi)$. We demonstrate that for fixed $m$ and trivial character $\chi$, the second coefficient of the characteristic polynomial of $T_m^{\text{new}}(N,k)$ vanishes for only finitely many pairs $(N,k)$, and we further determine the sign. To demonstrate our method, for $m=2,4$, we also compute all pairs $(N,k)$ for which the second coefficient vanishes. In the general character case, we also show that excluding an infinite family where $S_k^{\text{new}}(\Gamma_0(N), \chi)$ is trivial, the second coefficient of the characteristic polynomial of $T_m^{\text{new}}(N,k,\chi)$ vanishes for only finitely many triples $(N,k,\chi)$.

Abstract:We evaluate asymptotically the smoothed first moment of central values of families of quadratic, cubic, quartic and sextic Hecke $L$-functions over various imaginary quadratic number fields of class number one, using the method of double Dirichlet series. In particular, we obtain asymptotic formulas for the quadratic families with error terms of size $O(X^{1/4+\varepsilon})$ under the generalized Riemann hypothesis.

On the Real Zeroes of Half-integral Weight Hecke Cusp Forms

Abstract:We examine the distribution of zeroes of half-integral weight Hecke cusp forms on the manifold $\Gamma_0(4)\backslash\mathbb H$ near a cusp at infinity. In analogue of the Ghosh-Sarnak conjecture for classical holomorphic Hecke cusp forms, one expects that almost all of the zeroes sufficiently close to this cusp lie on two vertical geodesics $\Re(s)=-1/2$ and $\Re(s)=0$ as the weight tends to infinity. We show that, for $\gg_\varepsilon K^2/(\log K)^{3/2+\varepsilon}$ of the half-integral weight Hecke cusp forms in the Kohnen plus subspace with weight bounded by a large constant $K$, the number of such "real" zeroes grows almost at the expected rate. We also obtain a weaker lower bound for the number of real zeroes that holds for a positive proportion of forms. One of the key ingredients is the asymptotic evaluation of averaged first and second moments of quadratic twists of modular $L$-functions.

Abstract:We reprove the surjectivity statement of Braverman-Kazhdan's spectral description of Lusztig's asymptotic Hecke algebra $J$ in the context of $p$-adic groups. The proof is based on Bezrukavnikov-Ostrik's description of $J$ in terms of equivariant $K$-theory. As a porism, we prove that the action of $J$ extends from the non-strictly positive unramified characters to the complement of a finite union of divisors, and that the trace pairing between the Ciubotaru-He rigid cocentre of an affine Hecke algebra with equal parameters and the rigid quotient of its Grothendieck group is perfect whenever the parameter $q$ is not a root of the Poincaré polynomial of the finite Weyl group. Without recourse to $K$-theory, we prove a weak version of Xi's description of $J$ in type $A$. As an application of relationship between $J$ and the rigid cocentre, we prove that if the formal degree of a unipotent discrete series representation of a connected reductive $p$-adic group $G$ with a split inner form has denominator dividing the Poincaré polynomial of the Weyl group of $G$. Additionally, we give formulas for $t_w$ in terms of inverse and spherical Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for $w$ in the lowest cell.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic properties of monic orthogonal polynomials (OPs) with respect to some Freud weights when the degree of the polynomial tends to infinity, including the asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients, the nontrivial leading coefficients of the monic OPs, the associated Hankel determinants and the squares of $L^2$-norm of the monic OPs. These results are derived from the combination of the ladder operator approach, Dyson's Coulomb fluid approach and some recent results in the literature.

Low-Lying Zeros of a Thin Family of Automorphic $L$-Functions in the Level Aspect

Abstract:We calculate the one-level density of thin subfamilies of a family of Hecke cuspforms formed by twisting the forms in a smaller family by a character. The result gives support up to 1, conditional on GRH, and we also find several of the lower-order main terms. In addition, we find an unconditional result that has only slightly lower support. A crucial step in doing so is the establishment of an on-average version of the Weil bound that applies to twisted Kloosterman sums. Moreover, we average over these thin subfamilies by running over the characters in a coset, and observe that any amount of averaging at all is enough to allow us to get support greater than 1 and thus distinguish between the SO(even) and SO(odd) symmetry types. Finally, we also apply our results to nonvanishing problems for the families studied.

Abstract:We further study the orthogonal polynomials with respect to the generalized Airy weight based on the work of Clarkson and Jordaan [{\em J. Phys. A: Math. Theor.} {\bf 54} ({2021}) {185202}]. We prove the ladder operator equations and associated compatibility conditions for orthogonal polynomials with respect to the Laguerre-type weight of the form $w(x)=x^\lambda w_0(x),\;\la>-1, x\in\mathbb{R}^+$. By applying them to the generalized Airy polynomials, we are able to derive a discrete system for the recurrence coefficients. Combining with the Toda evolution, we establish the relation between the recurrence coefficients, the sub-leading coefficient of the monic generalized Airy polynomials and the associated Hankel determinant. Using Dyson's Coulomb fluid approach and with the aid of the discrete system for the recurrence coefficients, we obtain the large $n$ asymptotic expansions for the recurrence coefficients and the sub-leading coefficient of the monic generalized Airy polynomials. The large $n$ asymptotics (including the constant term) of the Hankel determinant has been derived by using a recent result in the literature. The long-time asymptotics of these quantities have also been discussed explicitly.

Abstract:E. Heine in the 19th century studied a system of orthogonal polynomials associated with the weight $\left[x(x-\alpha)(x-\beta)\right]^{-\frac{1}{2}}$, $x\in[0,\alpha]$, $0<\alpha<\beta$. A related system was studied by C. J. Rees in 1945, associated with the weight $\left[(1-x^2)(1-k^2x^2)\right]^{-\frac{1}{2}}$, $x\in[-1,1]$, $k^2\in(0,1)$. These are also known as elliptic orthogonal polynomials, since the moments of the weights maybe expressed in terms of elliptic integrals. Such orthogonal polynomials are of great interest because the corresponding Hankel determinant, depending on a parameter $k^2$, where $0<k^2<1$ is the $\tau$~function of a particular Painlevé VI, the special cases of which are related to enumerative problems arising from string theory. We show that the recurrence coefficients, denoted by $\beta_n(k^2),\;n=1,2,\dots$; and ${\rm p}_1(n,k^2)$, the coefficients of $x^{n-2}$ of the monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to a generalized version of the weight studied by Rees, $$ (1-x^2)^{\alpha}(1-k^2x^2)^{\beta},\;\;x\in[-1,1],\;\alpha>-1,\;\beta\in \mathbb{R}, $$ satisfy second order non-linear difference equations. The large $n$ expansion based on the difference equations when combined with known asymptotics of the leading terms of the associated Hankel determinant yields a complete asymptotic expansion of the Hankel determinant. The Painlevé equation is also discussed as well as the generalization of the linear second order differential equation found by Rees.
