Local Lagrangian Floer Homology of Quasi-Minimally Degenerate Intersections

Abstract:We define a broad class of local Lagrangian intersections which we call quasi-minimally degenerate (QMD) before developing techniques for studying their local Floer homology. In some cases, one may think of such intersections as modeled on minimally degenerate functions as defined by Kirwan. One major result of this paper is: if $L_0,L_1$ are two Lagrangian submanifolds whose intersection decomposes into QMD sets, there is a spectral sequence converging to their Floer homology $HF_*(L_0,L_1)$ whose $E^1$ page is obtained from local data given by the QMD pieces. The $E^1$ terms are the singular homologies of submanifolds with boundary that come from perturbations of the QMD sets. We then give some applications of these techniques towards studying affine varieties, reproducing some prior results using our more general framework.

Abstract: In this article, the authors review what the Floer homology is and what it does in symplectic geometry both in the closed string and in the open string context. In the first case, the authors will explain how the chain level Floer theory leads to the $C^0$ symplectic invariants of Hamiltonian flows and to the study of topological Hamiltonian dynamics. In the second case, the authors explain how Floer's original construction of Lagrangian intersection Floer homology is obstructed in general as soon as one leaves the category of exact Lagrangian submanifolds. They will survey construction, obstruction and promotion of the Floer complex to the $A_\infty$ category of symplectic manifolds. Some applications of this general machinery to the study of the topology of Lagrangian embeddings in relation to symplectic topology and to mirror symmetry are also reviewed.

Abstract:We define Hamiltonian Floer homology with differential graded (DG) local coefficients for symplectically aspherical manifolds. The differential of the underlying complex involves chain representatives of the fundamental classes of the moduli spaces of Floer trajectories of arbitrary dimension. This setup allows in particular to define and compute Floer homology with coefficients in chains on fibers of fibrations over the free loop space of the underlying symplectic manifold. We develop the DG Floer toolset, including continuation maps and homotopies, and we also define and study symplectic homology groups with DG local coefficients. We define spectral invariants and establish general criteria for almost existence of contractible periodic orbits on regular energy levels of Hamiltonian systems inside Liouville domains. In the case of cotangent bundles, we prove a Viterbo isomorphism theorem with DG local coefficients. This serves as a stepping stone for applications to the almost existence of contractible closed characteristics on closed smooth hypersurfaces. In this context, our methods allow to access for the first time the dichotomy between closed manifolds that are aspherical and those that are not.

Abstract:We construct a version of Lagrangian Floer homology whose chain complex is generated by the inscriptions of a rectangle into a real analytic Jordan curve. By using its associated spectral invariants, we establish that a rectifiable Jordan curve admits inscriptions of a whole interval of rectangles. In particular, it inscribes a square if the area it encloses is more than half that of a circle of equal diameter.

Abstract:Let $(M \omega)$ be a two dimensional symplectic manifold, $\phi: M \to M$ a symplectomorphism with hyperbolic fixed point $x$ and transversely intersecting stable and unstable manifolds $W^s(\phi, x) \cap\ W^u(\phi, x)=:\mathcal{H}(\phi, x)$. The intersection points are called homoclinic points, and the stable and unstable manifold are in this situation Lagrangian submanifolds. For this Lagrangian intersection problem with its infinite number of intersection points and wild oscillation behavior, we first define a Floer homology generated by finite sets of so-called contractible homoclinic points. This generalizes very significantly the Floer homologies generated by (semi)primary points defined by us in earlier works. Nevertheless these Floer homologies only consider quite `local' aspects of $W^s(\phi, x) \cap\ W^u(\phi, x)$ since their generator sets are finite, but the number of all contractible homoclinic points is infinite. To overcome this issue, we construct a direct limit of these `local' homoclinic Floer homologies over suitable index sets. These direct limits thus accumulate the information gathered by the finitely generated local' homoclinic Floer homologies.

Abstract:We generalize Lagrangian Floer cohomology to sequences of Lagrangian correspondences. For sequences related by the geometric composition of Lagrangian correspondences we establish an isomorphism of the Floer cohomologies. We give applications to calculations of Floer cohomology, displaceability of Lagrangian correspondences, and transfer of displaceability under geometric composition.

Abstract:This article provides the first extension of Lagrangian Intersection Floer cohomology to Poisson structures which are almost everywhere symplectic, but degenerate on a lower-dimensional submanifold. The main result of the article is the definition of Lagrangian intersection Floer cohomology, referred to as log Floer cohomology, for orientable surfaces equipped with log symplectic structures. We show that this cohomology is invariant under suitable Hamiltonian isotopies (referred to as admissible) and that it is isomorphic to the log de Rham cohomology when computed for a single Lagrangian.

Abstract:We provide a construction of equivariant Lagrangian Floer homology HFG(L0,L1) , for a compact Lie group G acting on a symplectic manifold M in a Hamiltonian fashion, and a pair of G ‐Lagrangian submanifolds L0,L1⊂M . We do so by using symplectic homotopy quotients involving cotangent bundles of an approximation of EG . Our construction relies on Wehrheim and Woodward's theory of quilts, and the telescope construction. We show that these groups are independent of the auxiliary choices involved in their construction, and are H∗(BG) ‐bimodules. In the case when L0=L1 , we show that their chain complex CFG(L0,L1) is homotopy equivalent to the equivariant Morse complex of L0 . Furthermore, if zero is a regular value of the moment map μ and if G acts freely on μ−1(0) , we construct two 'Kirwan morphisms' from CFG(L0,L1) to CF(L0/G,L1/G) (respectively, from CF(L0/G,L1/G) to CFG(L0,L1) ). Our construction applies to the exact and monotone settings, as well as in the setting of the extended moduli space of flat SU(2) ‐connections of a Riemann surface, considered in Manolescu and Woodward's work. Applied to the latter setting, our construction provides an equivariant symplectic side for the Atiyah–Floer conjecture.

Abstract:We prove a degenerate homological Arnol'd conjecture on Lagrangian intersections beyond the case studied by A. Floer and H. Hofer via a new version of Lagrangian Ljusternik--Schnirelman theory. We introduce the notion of (Lagrangian) fundamental quantum factorizations and use them to give some uniform lower bounds of the numbers of Lagrangian intersections for some classical examples including Clifford tori in complex projective spaces. Additionally, we use the Lagrangian Ljusternik-Schnirelman theory to study the size of the intersection of a monotone Lagrangian with its image of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism.

Abstract:We compute the Lagrangian Floer cohomology groups of certain tori in closed simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds arising from Fintushel-Stern knot surgery. These manifolds are usually not symplectically aspherical. As a result of the computation we observe examples where $HF(L_0)\cong HF(L_1)$ and $L_0$ and $L_1$ are smoothly isotopic but $L_0,L_1$ are not symplectically isotopic and are distinguished by $HF(L_0,L_1)$.

Abstract:Knot Floer homology is a knot invariant defined using holomorphic curves. In more recent work, taking cues from bordered Floer homology,the authors described another knot invariant, called "bordered knot Floer homology", which has an explicit algebraic and combinatorial construction. In the present paper, we extend the holomorphic theory to bordered Heegaard diagrams for partial knot projections, and establish a pairing result for gluing such diagrams, in the spirit of the pairing theorem of bordered Floer homology. After making some model calculations, we obtain an identification of a variant of knot Floer homology with its algebraically defined relative. These results give a fast algorithm for computing knot Floer homology.

Abstract:In this paper we study the Lagrangian Floer theory over $\Z$ or $\Z_2$. Under an appropriate assumption on ambient symplectic manifold, we show that the whole story of Lagrangian Floer theory in \cite{fooo-book} can be developed over $\Z_2$ coefficients, and over $\Z$ coefficients when Lagrangian submanifolds are relatively spin. The main technical tools used for the construction are the notion of the sheaf of groups, and stratification and compatibility of the normal cones applied to the Kuranishi structure of the moduli space of pseudo-holomorphic discs.
On Floer homology and the Berge conjecture on knots admitting lens space surgeries

Abstract:We complete the first step in a two-part program proposed by Baker, Grigsby, and the author to prove that Berge's construction of knots in the three-sphere which admit lens space surgeries is complete. The first step, which we prove here, is to show that a knot in a lens space with a three-sphere surgery has simple (in the sense of rank) knot Floer homology. The second (conjectured) step involves showing that, for a fixed lens space, the only knots with simple Floer homology belong to a simple finite family. Using results of Baker, we provide evidence for the conjectural part of the program by showing that it holds for a certain family of knots. Coupled with work of Ni, these knots provide the first infinite family of non-trivial knots which are characterized by their knot Floer homology. As another application, we provide a Floer homology proof of a theorem of Berge.

A remark on taut foliations and Floer homology

Abstract:It is well-known that the reduced Floer homology of a rational homology sphere admitting a taut foliation does not vanish. We strengthen this by showing that (when thought of as an $\mathbb{F}[U]$-module) it also admits a direct $\mathbb{F}$-summand. Hence, one could potentially detect counterexamples to the foliation part of the $L$-space conjecture via purely Floer theoretic computations.

Abstract:Following an idea of Frédéric le Roux, we define in this paper a family of Hofer-type pseudonorms on braid groups, computing the minimal energy of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism which fixes a Lagrangian configuration of circles on the unit disc and realises that braid type. We prove that in the case of braids with two strands we have in fact a norm, and we give lower estimates for braids with more strands. The main tool is Link Floer Homology, recently defined by D. Cristofaro-Gardiner, V. Humilière, C.-Y. Mak, S. Seyfaddini and I. Smith, which we use to construct a family of quasimorphisms on the group of compactly supported Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms which is sensitive to the linking number of diffeomorphisms fixing Lagrangian links.

Abstract:We construct a stable infinity category with objects flow categories and morphisms flow bimodules; our construction has many flavors, related to a choice of bordism theory, and we discuss in particular framed bordism and the bordism theory of complex oriented derived orbifolds. In this setup, the construction of homotopy types associated to Floer-theoretic data is immediate: the moduli spaces of solutions to Floer's equation assemble into a flow category with respect to the appropriate bordism theory, and the associated Floer homotopy types arise as suitable mapping spectra in this category. The definition of these mapping spectra is sufficiently explicit to allow a direct interpretation of the Floer homotopy groups as Floer bordism groups. In the setting of framed bordism, we show that the category we construct is a model for the category of spectra. We implement the construction of Floer homotopy types in this new formalism for the case of Hamiltonian Floer theory.
