Abstract:Energy band theory is a fundamental cornerstone of condensed matter physics. According to conventional wisdom, discrete translational symmetry is mandatory for defining energy bands. Here, we illustrate that, in fact, the concept of energy band can be generalized to incommensurate systems lacking such symmetry, thus transcending the traditional paradigm of energy band. The validity of our theory is verified by extensive numerical calculations in the celebrated Aubry-André-Harper model and a two-dimensional incommensurate model of graphene. Building upon the proposed concept of incommensurate energy bands, we further develop a theory of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) for incommensurate systems, providing a clear physical picture for the incommensurate ARPES spectra. Our work establishes a comprehensive energy band theory for incommensurate systems.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: **How to define and understand the band structure in incommensurate (or quasi - periodic) systems lacking translational symmetry?** Traditionally, band theory relies on Bloch's theorem, which requires crystals to have discrete translational symmetry. However, in incommensurate systems, this symmetry does not exist, causing the traditional band theory to no longer be applicable. Specifically, the main contributions of this paper include: 1. **Generalizing the concept of the band**: The paper proposes a new method that can define the band structure in incommensurate systems without translational symmetry. This method does not rely on Bloch's theorem but is based on the recently proposed **incommensurate energy spectrum (IES) method** and can solve the eigenstates of incommensurate systems in momentum space. 2. **Verifying the validity of the theory**: Through extensive numerical calculations in the well - known Aubry - André - Harper (AAH) model and the two - dimensional incommensurate graphene model, the validity of the proposed incommensurate energy band (IEB) theory is verified. 3. **Developing the incommensurate ARPES theory**: Based on the proposed incommensurate band concept, a set of angle - resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) theories applicable to incommensurate systems is further developed. This provides a clear physical picture for explaining the incommensurate ARPES spectra observed in experiments. 4. **Application examples**: Two specific examples are shown to prove the application value of the new theory: - **Moiré flat bands in the AAH model**: When the period of the quasi - periodic potential is close to the lattice constant of the atomic chain, the AAH model can produce Moiré flat bands. - **Graphene under the action of a triangular periodic potential**: The graphene in a two - dimensional incommensurate system is studied, and its complex incommensurate bands and ARPES spectra are shown. In summary, this paper breaks through the limitations of traditional band theory and provides a brand - new framework for understanding and describing the electronic structures of incommensurate systems. This not only expands the application range of band theory but also paves the way for in - depth research on the electronic properties of quasi - periodic materials.
