Abstract:Abstract One way of interpreting a left Kan extension is as taking a kind of “partial colimit”, whereby one replaces parts of a diagram by their colimits. We make this intuition precise by means of the partial evaluations sitting in the so-called bar construction of monads. The (pseudo)monads of interest for forming colimits are the monad of diagrams and the monad of small presheaves, both on the (huge) category CAT of locally small categories. Throughout, particular care is taken to handle size issues, which are notoriously delicate in the context of free cocompletion. We spell out, with all 2-dimensional details, the structure maps of these pseudomonads. Then, based on a detailed general proof of how the restriction-of-scalars construction of monads extends to the case of pseudoalgebras over pseudomonads, we consider a morphism of monads between them, which we call image . This morphism allows in particular to generalize the idea of confinal functors , i.e. of functors which leave colimits invariant in an absolute way. This generalization includes the concept of absolute colimit as a special case. The main result of this paper spells out how a pointwise left Kan extension of a diagram corresponds precisely to a partial evaluation of its colimit. This categorical result is analogous to what happens in the case of probability monads, where a conditional expectation of a random variable corresponds to a partial evaluation of its center of mass.

Abstract:We develop foundations for abstract homotopy theory based on Grothendieck's idea of a "derivator". The theory is model-independent, and does not depend on model categories, nor on simplicial sets. It is designed to accomodate all the usual potential applications, such as e.g. enhancements for derived categories of coherent sheaves, in a way that is as close as possible to usual category theory.

Abstract:Führmann introduced Abstract Kleisli structures to model call-by-value programming languages with side effects, and showed that they correspond to monads satisfying a certain equalising condition on the unit. We first extend this theory to non-strict morphisms of monads, and to incorporate $2$-cells of monads. We then further extend this to a theory of abstract Kleisli structures on $2$-categories, characterising when the original pseudomonad can be recovered by the abstract Kleisli structure on its $2$-category of free-pseudoalgebras.

Kan extendable subcategories and fibrewise topology

Abstract:We use pointwise Kan extensions to generate new subcategories out of old ones. We investigate the properties of these newly produced categories and give sufficient conditions for their cartesian closedness to hold. Our methods are of general use. Here we apply them particularly to the study of the properties of certain categories of fibrewise topological spaces. In particular, we prove that the categories of fibrewise compactly generated spaces, fibrewise sequential spaces and fibrewise Alexandroff spaces are cartesian closed provided that the base space satisfies the right separation axiom.

Abstract:This paper contains results from two areas -- formal theory of Kan extensions and concrete categories. The contribution to the former topic is based on the extension of the concept of Kan extension to the cones and we prove that limiting cones create Kan extensions. The latter topic focuses on two significant families of concrete categories over an arbitrary category. Beck categories are defined by preservance properties while newly introduced l-algebraic categories are described by limits of categories of functor algebras. The latter family is shown to be rather natural. The well known Beck's theorem states that the monadic categories are precisely the Beck categories with free objects. We strengthen this theorem by weakening the assumptions of the existence of free objects and we replace it by existence of some Kan extensions, namely the pointwise codensity monads. Moreover, using the result on Kan extensions of cones we show that for l-algebraic categories even weaker assumption fits.

Abstract:An algebraic left Kan extension is a left Kan extension which interacts well with the algebraic structure present in the given situation, and these appear in various subjects such as the homotopy theory of operads and in the study of conformal field theories. In the most interesting examples, the functor along which we left Kan extend goes between categories that enjoy universal properties which express the meaning of the calculation we are trying to understand. These universal properties say that the categories in question are universal examples of some categorical structure possessing some kind of internal structure, and so fall within the theory of internal algebra classifiers described in earlier work of the author. In this article conditions of a monad-theoretic nature are identified which give rise to morphisms between such universal objects, which satisfy the key condition of Guitart-exactness, which guarantees the algebraicness of left Kan extending along them. The resulting setting explains the algebraicness of the left Kan extensions arising in operad theory, for instance from the theory of Feynman categories of Kaufmann and Ward, generalisations thereof, and also includes the situations considered by Batanin and Berger in their work on the homotopy theory of algebras of polynomial monads.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a skeletally small additive category. Using the canonical equivalence between two different presentations of the free abelian category over $\mathcal{X}$, we give a new and simple characterization of definable subcategories of $\rm Mod\text{-}\mathcal{X}$, and in particular definable subcategories of modules over rings. In the end, we give a conceptual proof of Auslander-Gruson-Jensen duality, which makes the duality between definable subcategories of left and right module more transparent.

A functorial approach to $n$-abelian categories

Abstract:We develop a functorial approach to the study of $n$-abelian categories by reformulating their axioms in terms of their categories of finitely presented functors. Such an approach allows the use of classical homological algebra and representation theory techniques to understand higher homological algebra. As an application, we present two possible generalizations of the axioms "every monomorphism is a kernel" and "every epimorphism is a cokernel" of an abelian category to $n$-abelian categories. We also specialize our results to modules over rings, thereby describing when the category of finitely generated projective modules over a ring is $n$-abelian. Moreover, we establish a correspondence for $n$-abelian categories with additive generators, which extends the higher Auslander correspondence.

Abstract:We study the 2-category of elements from an abstract point of view. We generalize to dimension 2 the well-known result that the category of elements can be captured by a comma object that also exhibits a pointwise left Kan extension. For this, we propose an original definition of pointwise Kan extension along a discrete 2-opfibration in the lax 3-category of 2-categories, 2-functors, lax natural transformations and modifications. Such definition uses cartesian-marked lax limits, which are an alternative to weighted 2-limits. We show that a pointwise Kan extension along a discrete 2-opfibration is always a weak one as well. The proof is based on an original generalization of the parametrized Yoneda lemma which is as lax as it can be.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss certain circumstances in which the category of tame functors inherits an abelian category structure with minimal resolutions and a model category structure with minimal cofibrant replacements. We also present a structure theorem for cofibrant objects in the category of tame functors indexed by realizations of posets of dimension $1$ with values in the category of chain complexes in an abelian category whose all objects are projectives. Moreover, we introduce a general technique to generate indecomposable objects in the abelian category of functors indexed by finite posets.

Towards computational methods for category theory

Abstract:In this work, we describe a computational model for categories and functors. The categories that are handled by this model are locally finitely presentable categories which can be "sufficiently finitely" described to a computer. As an application of this model, we introduce a criterion to show whether a functor, as described in the model, is a left adjoint. The verification of this criterion can be partially automatised, if not fully in some cases, as witnessed by an implementation. While this work is focused on computational aspects, it is relevant to the broader categorical community, as it presents a new way to check whether functors are left adjoints and outlines a new computational methodology in category theory.

From Morphism Categories to Functor Categories

Abstract:For a nice-enough category $\mathcal{C}$, we construct both the morphism category ${\rm H}(\mathcal{C})$ of $\mathcal{C}$ and the category ${\rm mod}\mbox{-}\mathcal{C}$ of all finitely presented contravariant additive functors over $\mathcal{C}$ with values in Abelian groups. The main theme of this paper, is to translate some representation-theoretic attributes back and forth from one category to the other. This process is done by using an appropriate functor between these two categories, an approach which seems quite promising in particular when we show that many of almost split sequences are preserved by this functor. We apply our results to the case of wide subcategories of module categories to obtain certain auto-equivalences over them. Another part of the paper deals with Auslander algebras arising from algebras of finite representation type. In fact, we apply our results to study the Auslander-Reiten translates of simple modules over such algebras. In the last parts, we try to recognize particular components in the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver of Auslander algebras arising from self-injective algebras of finite representation type.

Abstract:Functors involved in Fontaine equivalences decompose as extension of scalars and taking of invariants between full subcategories of modules over a topological ring equipped with semi-linear continuous action of a topological monoid. We give a general framework for these categories and the functors between them. We define the categories of étale projective $\mathcal{S}$-modules over $R$ to englobe categories that will correspond by Fontaine-type equivalences to finite free representations of a group. We study their preservation by base change, taking of invariants by a normal submonoid of $\mathcal{S}$ and coinduction to a bigger monoid. We define and study categories corresponding to finite type continuous representations over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ through the notions of finite projective $(r,\mu)$-dévissage and of topological étale $\mathcal{S}$-modules over $R$.

Abstract:The theory of monads on categories equipped with a dagger (a contravariant identity-on-objects involutive endofunctor) works best when everything respects the dagger: the monad and adjunctions should preserve the dagger, and the monad and its algebras should satisfy the so-called Frobenius law. Then any monad resolves as an adjunction, with extremal solutions given by the categories of Kleisli and Frobenius-Eilenberg-Moore algebras, which again have a dagger. We characterize the Frobenius law as a coherence property between dagger and closure, and characterize strong such monads as being induced by Frobenius monoids.

Abstract:We present the first definition of strictly associative and unital $\infty$-category. Our proposal takes the form of a type theory whose terms describe the operations of such structures, and whose definitional equality relation enforces desired strictness conditions. The key technical device is a new computation rule in the definitional equality of the theory, which we call insertion, defined in terms of a universal property. On terms for which it is defined, this operation "inserts" one of the arguments of a substituted coherence into the coherence itself, appropriately modifying the pasting diagram and result type, and simplifying the syntax in the process. We generate an equational theory from this reduction relation and we study its properties in detail, showing that it yields a decision procedure for equality. Expressed as a type theory, our model is well-adapted for generating and verifying efficient proofs of higher categorical statements. We illustrate this via an OCaml implementation, and give a number of examples, including a short encoding of the syllepsis, a 5-dimensional homotopy that plays an important role in the homotopy groups of spheres.

An abelian ambient category for behaviors in algebraic systems theory

Abstract:We describe an abelian category $\mathbf{ab}(M)$ in which the solution sets of finitely many linear equations over an arbitrary ring $R$ with values in an arbitrary left $R$-module $M$ reside as objects. Such solution sets are also called behaviors in algebraic systems theory. We both characterize $\mathbf{ab}(M)$ by a universal property and give a construction of $\mathbf{ab}(M)$ as a Serre quotient of the free abelian category generated by $R$. We discuss features of $\mathbf{ab}(M)$ relevant in the context of algebraic systems theory: if $R$ is left coherent and $M$ is an fp-injective fp-cogenerator, then $\mathbf{ab}(M)$ is antiequivalent to the category of finitely presented left $R$-modules. This provides an alternative point of view to the important module-behavior duality in algebraic systems theory. We also obtain a dual statement: if $R$ is right coherent and $M$ is fp-faithfully flat, then $\mathbf{ab}(M)$ is equivalent to the category of finitely presented right $R$-modules. As an example application, we discuss delay-differential systems with constant coefficients and a polynomial signal space. Moreover, we propose definitions of controllability and observability in our setup.
