Abstract:We demonstrate dual-frequency stabilization of a hybrid-integrated multi-channel laser to an integrated high Q-factor silicon nitride (SiN) coil resonator with more than 40 dB frequency noise suppression. The frequency locked channels are utilized for a proof-of-concept fiber sensing experiment.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop a multi - wavelength, low - noise, and high - stability laser source technology for fiber - optic sensing and other precision measurement applications. Specifically, the author shows that by locking the two - wavelength frequencies of a hybrid - integrated multi - channel laser to a high - Q silicon nitride (SiN) coil resonator, a frequency - noise suppression of more than 40 dB is achieved. This frequency - locking technique not only improves the stability of the laser but also significantly enhances the performance of fiber - optic sensing, especially in detecting small acoustically - induced phase perturbations. ### Specific problems solved by the paper include: 1. **Development of low - noise lasers**: Develop low - noise lasers with excellent long - term stability and high spectral purity, which are crucial for applications such as fiber - optic sensing, microwave photonics, and optical atomic clocks. 2. **Frequency locking of multi - wavelength lasers**: Lock multiple laser wavelengths to the same reference cavity to improve sensing performance and support applications such as dual - wavelength phase - sensitive optical time - domain reflectometers (OTDR) and low - phase - noise microwave generation. 3. **Development of integrated optical frequency technologies**: Develop integrated optical frequency technologies with multi - wavelength capabilities, milliwatts of power per comb line, and ultra - narrow spectral linewidths in CMOS - compatible processes. 4. **Improvement of fiber - optic sensing**: Significantly improve the sensitivity of fiber - optic sensing through frequency - locking techniques, especially for detecting small acoustically - caused phase perturbations. ### Experimental results: - **Frequency - noise suppression**: The frequency noise of the freely - running laser channels at low Fourier frequencies is suppressed by approximately 40 dB. - **Improvement in frequency stability**: The fractional frequency stability of the frequency difference between the two laser channels reaches \(2\times 10^{-13}\) within a 0.1 - second gate time. - **Fiber - optic sensing experiment**: Using the frequency - locked laser channels, small acoustically - induced phase perturbations on a 10 - kilometer fiber coil are successfully detected, verifying the effectiveness of this technique. ### Conclusion: By locking the frequencies of two wavelengths of a multi - channel laser to a high - Q SiN coil resonator, the author significantly improves the sensitivity of fiber - optic sensing. This technique combines scalable multi - channel laser technology and an ultra - low - loss SiN platform, providing an important advance for precision optical interferometry.
