Abstract:We prove that if the Morrison cone conjecture holds for a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold $Y$, it holds for any smooth Calabi-Yau threefold deformation-equivalent to $Y$. We use this result to prove a new case of the Morrison cone conjecture.

Abstract:Assuming the Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture for the generic fiber of a Calabi-Yau fibration and the abundance conjecture, we show (1) the finiteness of minimal models, (2) the existence of a weak rational polyhedral fundamental domain under the action of birational automorphism groups, and (3) the finiteness of varieties as targets of contractions. As an application, the finiteness of minimal models and the weak Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture in relative dimensions $\leq 2$ are established.

Abstract:We classify simply connected compact Sasaki manifolds of dimension 2n+1 with positive transverse bisectional curvature. In particular, the Kähler cone corresponding to such manifolds must be bi-holomorphic to Cn+1\{0}. As an application we recover the theorem of Mori and Siu–Yau on the Frankel conjecture and extend it to certain orbifold version. The main idea is to deform such Sasaki manifolds to the standard round sphere in two steps, both fixing the complex structure on the Kähler cone. First, we deform the metric along the Sasaki–Ricci flow and obtain a limit Sasaki–Ricci soliton with positive transverse bisectional curvature. Then by varying the Reeb vector field which essentially decreases the volume functional, we deform the Sasaki–Ricci soliton to a Sasaki–Einstein metric with positive transverse bisectional curvature, i.e. a round sphere. The second deformation is only possible when one treats simultaneously regular and irregular Sasaki manifolds, even if the manifold one starts with is regular (quasi-regular), i.e. Kähler manifolds (orbifolds).
On the cone conjecture for log Calabi-Yau mirrors of Fano 3-folds

Abstract:Let $Y$ be a smooth projective $3$-fold admitting a K3 fibration $f : Y \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$ with $-K_Y = f^*\mathcal{O}(1)$. We show that the pseudoautomorphism group of $Y$ acts with finitely many orbits on the codimension one faces of the movable cone if $H^3(Y,\mathbb{C})=0$, confirming a special case of the Kawamata--Morrison--Totaro cone conjecture. In [CCGK16], [P18], and [CP18], the authors construct log Calabi-Yau 3-folds with K3 fibrations satisfying the hypotheses of our theorem as the mirrors of Fano 3-folds.

Abstract:In this paper, by running MMP and considering the anti-canonical fibration, we prove the Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture for klt Calabi-Yau pairs $(X,\Delta)$ such that $\dim X$ is at most $4$, and the Iitaka dimension $\kappa(X,-K_X)$ is at least $\dim X - 2$.

Conical Kähler–Einstein Metrics Revisited

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the “interpolation–degeneration” strategy to study Kähler–Einstein metrics on a smooth Fano manifold with cone singularities along a smooth divisor that is proportional to the anti-canonical divisor. By “interpolation” we show the angles in (0, 2π] that admit a conical Kähler–Einstein metric form a connected interval, and by “degeneration” we determine the boundary of the interval in some important cases. As a first application, we show that there exists a Kähler–Einstein metric on ${\mathbb{P}^2}$ with cone singularity along a smooth conic (degree 2) curve if and only if the angle is in (π/2, 2π]. When the angle is 2π/3 this proves the existence of a Sasaki–Einstein metric on the link of a three dimensional A 2 singularity, and thus answers a question posed by Gauntlett–Martelli–Sparks–Yau. As a second application we prove a version of Donaldson’s conjecture about conical Kähler–Einstein metrics in the toric case using Song–Wang’s recent existence result of toric invariant conical Kähler–Einstein metrics.

Abstract:We develop the deformation theory of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds with cone-angles less than $2\pi$, i.e. contained in the interval $(0,2\pi)$. In the present paper we focus on deformations keeping the topological type of the cone-manifold fixed. We prove local rigidity for such structures. This gives a positive answer to a question of A. Casson.

Abstract:We formulate an {\it effective cone conjecture} for klt Calabi--Yau pairs $(X,\Delta)$, pertaining to the structure of the cone of effective divisors $\mathrm{Eff}(X)$ modulo the action of the subgroup of pseudo-automorphisms $\mathrm{PsAut}(X,\Delta)$. Assuming the existence of good minimal models in dimension $\dim(X)$, known to hold in dimension up to $3$, we prove that the effective cone conjecture for $(X,\Delta)$ is equivalent to the Kawamata--Morrison--Totaro movable cone conjecture for $(X,\Delta)$. As an application, we show that the movable cone conjecture unconditionally holds for the smooth Calabi--Yau threefolds introduced by Schoen and studied by Namikawa, Grassi and Morrison. We also show that for such a Calabi--Yau threefold $X$, all of its minimal models, apart from $X$ itself, have rational polyhedral nef cones.

Abstract:Enriques manifolds are non simply connected manifolds whose universal cover is irreducible holomorphic symplectic, and as such they are natural generalizations of Enriques surfaces. The goal of this note is to prove the Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture for such manifolds when the degree of the cover is prime using the analogous result (established by Amerik-Verbitsky) for their universal cover. We also verify the conjecture for the known examples having non-prime degree.

Abstract:We investigate nef and movable cones of hypersurfaces in Mori dream spaces. The first result is: Let $Z$ be a smooth Mori dream space of dimension at least four whose extremal contractions are of fiber type of relative dimension at least two and let $X$ be a smooth ample divisor in $Z$, then $X$ is a Mori dream space as well. The second result is: Let $Z$ be a Fano manifold of dimension at least four whose extremal contractions are of fiber type and let $X$ be a smooth anti-canonical hypersurface in $Z$, which is a smooth Calabi--Yau variety, then the unique minimal model of $X$ up to isomorphism is $X$ itself, and moreover, the movable cone conjecture holds for $X$, namely, there exists a rational polyhedral cone which is a fundamental domain for the action of birational automorphisms on the effective movable cone of $X$. The third result is: Let $P:= \mathbb{P}^n \times \cdots \times \mathbb{P}^n$ be the $N$-fold self-product of the $n$-dimensional projective space. Let $X$ be a general complete intersection of $n+1$ hypersurfaces of multidegree $(1, \dots, 1)$ in $P$ with $\dim X \geq 3$. Then $X$ has only finitely many minimal models up to isomorphism, and moreover, the movable cone conjecture holds for $X$.

Abstract:In this paper we show the existence of cones over a 8-dimensional rational sphere at the boundary of the Mori cone of the blow-up of the plane at very general points. This gives evidence for De Fernex's strong -conjecture, which is known to imply Nagata's conjecture. This also implies the existence of a multitude of good and wonderful rays as defined in Ciliberto et al. (Clay Math Proc 18:185–203, 2013).

Abstract:Let $X$ be a complex projective variety with only canonical singularities and with trivial canonical bundle. Let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. Assume that the pair $(X,L)$ is the flat limit of a family of smooth polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds. Assume that for each singular point $x \in X$ there exist a Kahler-Einstein Fano manifold $Z$ and a positive integer $q$ dividing $K_Z$ such that $-\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ is very ample and such that the germ $(X,x)$ is locally analytically isomorphic to a neighborhood of the vertex of the blow-down of the zero section of $\frac{1}{q}K_{Z}$. We prove that up to biholomorphism, the unique weak Ricci-flat Kahler metric representing $2\pi c_1(L)$ on $X$ is asymptotic at a polynomial rate near $x$ to the natural Ricci-flat Kahler cone metric on $\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ constructed using the Calabi ansatz. In particular, our result applies if $(X, \mathcal{O}(1))$ is a nodal quintic threefold in $\mathbb{P}^4$. This provides the first known examples of compact Ricci-flat manifolds with non-orbifold isolated conical singularities.

Abstract:We develop the deformation theory of Calabi-Yau threefolds, by which we mean 3-dimensional complex manifolds with a nowhere-vanishing holomorphic 3-form, on manifolds with boundary. The boundary data is a closed, real 3-form on the 5-dimensional boundary. In the case of strongly pseudoconvex boundary, we obtain an analogue of Hitchin's local Torelli Theorem for compact manifolds, modulo a finite dimensional obstruction space, which we show is zero in many cases of interest.

Abstract:We prove a decomposition theorem for the nef cone of smooth fiber products over curves, subject to the necessary condition that their Néron--Severi space decomposes. We apply it to describe the nef cone of so-called Schoen varieties, which are the higher dimensional analogues of the Calabi--Yau threefolds constructed by Schoen. Schoen varieties give rise to Calabi--Yau pairs, and in each dimension at least three, there exist Schoen varieties with non-polyhedral nef cone. We prove the Kawamata--Morrison--Totaro Cone Conjecture for the nef cones of Schoen varieties, which generalizes the work by Grassi and Morrison.

Abstract:This paper determines the full, derived deformation theory of certain smooth rational curves C in Calabi–Yau 3‐folds, by determining all higher A∞ ‐products in its controlling DG‐algebra. This geometric setup includes very general cases where C does not contract, cases where the curve neighbourhood is not rational, all known simple smooth 3‐fold flops, and all known divisorial contractions to curves. As a corollary, it is shown that the non‐commutative deformation theory of C is described via a superpotential algebra derived from what we call free necklace polynomials, which are elements in the free algebra obtained via a closed formula from combinatorial gluing data. The description of these polynomials, together with the above results, establishes a suitably interpreted string theory prediction due to Ferrari (Adv. Theor. Math. Phys. 7 (2003) 619–665), Aspinwall–Katz (Comm. Math. Phys.. 264 (2006) 227–253) and Curto–Morrison (J. Algebraic Geom. 22 (2013) 599–627). Perhaps most significantly, the main results give both the language and evidence to finally formulate new contractibility conjectures for rational curves in CY 3‐folds, which lift Artin's (Amer. J. Math. 84 (1962) 485–496) celebrated results from surfaces.

Abstract:We prove that the deformation space of geodesic triangulations of a flat torus is homotopy equivalent to a torus. This solves an open problem proposed by Connelly et al. in 1983, in the case of flat tori. A key tool of the proof is a generalization of Tutte's embedding theorem for flat tori. When this paper is under preparation, Erickson and Lin proved a similar result, which works for all convex drawings.

Abstract:Let $X$ denote the `conifold smoothing', the symplectic Weinstein manifold which is the complement of a smooth conic in $T^*S^3$, or equivalently the plumbing of two copies of $T^*S^3$ along a Hopf link. Let $Y$ denote the `conifold resolution', by which we mean the complement of a smooth divisor in $\mathcal{O}(-1) \oplus \mathcal{O}(-1) \to \mathbb{P}^1$. We prove that the compactly supported symplectic mapping class group of $X$ splits off a copy of an infinite rank free group, in particular is infinitely generated; and we classify spherical objects in the bounded derived category $D(Y)$ (the three-dimensional `affine $A_1$-case'). Our results build on work of Chan-Pomerleano-Ueda and Toda, and both theorems make essential use of working on the `other side' of the mirror.

Abstract:A novel scheme is introduced to capture the spatial correlations of consecutive amino acids in naturally occurring proteins. This knowledge-based strategy is able to carry out optimally automated subdivisions of protein fragments into classes of similarity. The goal is to provide the minimal set of protein oligomers (termed ``oligons'' for brevity) that is able to represent any other fragment. At variance with previous studies where recurrent local motifs were classified, our concern is to provide simplified protein representations that have been optimised for use in automated folding and/or design attempts. In such contexts it is paramount to limit the number of degrees of freedom per amino acid without incurring in loss of accuracy of structural representations. The suggested method finds, by construction, the optimal compromise between these needs. Several possible oligon lengths are considered. It is shown that meaningful classifications cannot be done for lengths greater than 6 or smaller than 4. Different contexts are considered were oligons of length 5 or 6 are recommendable. With only a few dozen of oligons of such length, virtually any protein can be reproduced within typical experimental uncertainties. Structural data for the oligons is made publicly available.
