Abstract:We study stringy modifications of $T^3$-fibered manifolds, where the fiber undergoes a monodromy in the T-duality group. We determine the fibration data defining such T-folds from a geometric model, by using a map between the duality group and the group of large diffeomorphisms of a four-torus. We describe the monodromies induced around duality defects where such fibrations degenerate and we argue that local solutions receive corrections from the winding sector, dual to the symmetry-breaking modes that correct semi-flat metrics.

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of nonlinear sigma-models on Calabi-Yau manifolds, using the one-loop semiclassical approximation. The data being parameterized includes a choice of complex structure on the manifold, as well as some ``extra structure'' described by means of classes in H^2. The expectation that this moduli space is well-behaved in these ``extra structure'' directions leads us to formulate a simple and compelling conjecture about the action of the automorphism group on the K\"ahler cone. If true, it allows one to apply Looijenga's ``semi-toric'' technique to construct a partial compactification of the moduli space. We explore the implications which this construction has concerning the properties of the moduli space of complex structures on a ``mirror partner'' of the original Calabi-Yau manifold. We also discuss how a similarity which might have been noticed between certain work of Mumford and of Mori from the 1970's produces (with hindsight) evidence for mirror symmetry which was available in 1979. Abstract:We show how the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for the quintic three-fold can be cast into a global mirror symmetry framework. Then we draw inspiration from Berglund-H\"ubsch mirror duality construction to provide an analogue conjectural picture featuring all Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces within weighted projective spaces and certain quotients by finite abelian group actions.
New non-commutative resolutions of determinantal Calabi-Yau threefolds from hybrid GLSM

Abstract:We study topological strings on non-commutative resolutions of singular Calabi-Yau threefolds that are double covers of $\mathbb{P}^3$, ramified over determinantal octic surfaces. Using conifold transitions to complete intersections in toric ambient spaces, we prove that any small resolution has 2-torsional exceptional curves and is necessarily non-Kähler. The same transitions imply that M-theory develops a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge symmetry on the singular space. We then construct gauged linear sigma models with hybrid phases that flow to the worldsheet theories of strings propagating on the determinantal double solids in the presence of a flat but topologically non-trivial B-field. Localizing the sphere partition function allows us to calculate the fundamental periods of the mirror Calabi-Yau manifolds, then we check agreement with the periods of the Borisov-Li mirrors. We find that the corresponding variations of Hodge structure either correspond to one of the 14 hypergeometric cases or to a double cover thereof. We then use mirror symmetry and integrate the holomorphic anomaly equations to calculate $\mathbb{Z}_2$-refined Gopakumar-Vafa invariants for several examples.

Abstract:We realize higher-form symmetries in F-theory compactifications on non-compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds. Central to this endeavour is the topology of the boundary of the non-compact elliptic fibration, as well as the explicit construction of relative 2-cycles in terms of Lefschetz thimbles. We apply the analysis to a variety of elliptic fibrations, including geometries where the discriminant of the elliptic fibration intersects the boundary. We provide a concrete realization of the 1-form symmetry group by constructing the associated charged line operator from the elliptic fibration. As an application we compute the symmetry topological field theories in the case of elliptic three-folds, which correspond to mixed anomalies in 5d and 6d theories.
Generalized Symmetries of Non-Supersymmetric Orbifolds

Abstract:We determine generalized symmetries for 4D theories engineered via type II strings on non-supersymmetric orbifold backgrounds $\mathbb{R}^{3,1} \times \mathbb{R}^6 / \Gamma$. Probe branes detect generalized symmetries via the adjacency matrix for fermionic degrees of freedom in an associated quiver gauge theory. In situations where the tachyons are sequestered away from the boundary $S^5 / \Gamma$, this exactly matches the result extracted from singular homology. In situations with an unsequestered tachyon which stretches out to the boundary, the presence of tachyonic pulses partitions up the space into several distinct sectors, and the net contribution again matches with the answer expected via quiver methods. For IIA backgrounds, the presence of a localized closed string tachyon leads to transitions in the spectrum of states, generalized symmetries, higher-group symmetries, as well as the level matrix of the associated symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT). For IIB backgrounds with a stack of spacetime filling probe D3-branes, the onset of a radiatively generated potential leads to similar considerations involving scale dependent transitions in the symmetries of the theory, including structures such as duality defects / interfaces.

Abstract:We determine the dimensional topological field theory, which encodes the higher-form symmetries and their 't Hooft anomalies for d -dimensional QFTs obtained by compactifying M-theory on a non-compact space X . The resulting theory, which we call the Symmetry TFT, or SymTFT for short, is derived by reducing the topological sector of 11d supergravity on the boundary of the space X . Central to this endeavour is a reformulation of supergravity in terms of differential cohomology, which allows the inclusion of torsion in cohomology of the space , which in turn gives rise to the background fields for discrete (in particular higher-form) symmetries. We apply this framework to 7d super-Yang Mills, where , as well as the Sasaki–Einstein links of Calabi–Yau three-fold cones that give rise to 5d superconformal field theories. This M-theory analysis is complemented with a IIB 5-brane web approach, where we derive the SymTFTs from the asymptotics of the 5-brane webs. Our methods apply to both Lagrangian and non-Lagrangian theories, and allow for many generalisations.

Abstract:We present a proof of the mirror conjecture of Aganagic and Vafa (Mirror Symmetry, D-Branes and Counting Holomorphic Discs. http://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0012041v1, 2000) and Aganagic et al. (Z Naturforsch A 57(1–2):128, 2002) on disk enumeration in toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds for all smooth semi-projective toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We consider both inner and outer branes, at arbitrary framing. On Three-Dimensional Mirror Symmetry

Abstract:Mirror Symmetry for a large class of three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theories has a natural explanation in terms of M-theory compactified on a product of $\text{ALE}$ spaces. A pair of such mirror duals can be described as two different deformations of the eleven-dimensional supergravity background $\mathcal{M}=\mathbb{R}^{2,1} \times \text{ALE}_{1} \times \text{ALE}_{2}$, to which they flow in the deep IR. Using the $A-D-E$ classification of $\text{ALE}$ spaces, we present a neat way to catalogue dual quiver gauge theories that arise in this fashion. In addition to the well-known examples studied in \cite{Intriligator:1996ex}, \cite{deBoer:1996mp}, this procedure leads to new sets of dual theories. For a certain subset of dual theories which arise from the aforementioned M-theory background with an $A$-type $\text{ALE}_{1}$ and a $D$-type $\text{ALE}_2$, we verify the duality explicitly by a computation of partition functions of the theories on $S^3$, using localization techniques . We derive the relevant mirror map and discuss its agreement with predictions from the Type IIB brane construction for these theories.

The Geometry of Three-Forms on Symplectic Six-Manifolds

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometries associated with 3-forms of various orbital types on a symplectic 6-manifold. We show that there are extremely rich geometric structures attached to certain unstable 3-forms arising naturally from degeneration of Calabi-Yau structures, which in turn provides us a new perspective towards the SYZ conjecture. We give concrete examples and demonstrate that the limiting behavior of the Type IIA flow can be used to detect canonical geometric structures on symplectic manifolds.

Abstract:We construct a geometric model of eight-dimensional manifolds and realize them in the context of type II string theory. These eight-manifolds are constructed by non-trivial T4 fibrations over Calabi–Yau two-folds. These give rise to eight-dimensional non-Kähler Hermitian manifolds with SU(4) structure. The eight-manifold is also a circle fibration over a seven-dimensional G2 manifold with skew torsion. The eight-manifolds of this type appear as internal manifolds with SU(4) structure in type IIB string theory with F3 and F7 fluxes. These manifolds have generalized calibrated cycles in the presence of fluxes.

Abstract:F-theory on singular elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau four-folds provides a setting to geometrically study four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories, including matter and Yukawa couplings. The gauge degrees of freedom arise from the codimension 1 singular loci, the matter and Yukawa couplings are generated at enhanced singularities in higher codimension. We construct the resolution of the singular Tate form for an elliptic Calabi-Yau four-fold with an ADE type singularity in codimension 1 and study the structure of the fibers in codimension 2 and 3. We determine the fibers in higher codimension which in general are of Kodaira type along minimal singular loci, and are thus consistent with the low energy gauge-theoretic intuition. Furthermore, we provide a complementary description of the fibers in higher codimension, which will also be applicable to non-minimal singularities. The irreducible components in the fiber in codimension 2 correspond to weights of representations of the ADE gauge group. These can split further in codimension 3 in a way that is consistent with the generation of Yukawa couplings. Applying this reasoning, we then venture out to study non-minimal singularities, which occur for A type along codimension 3, and for D and E also in codimension 2. The fibers in this case are non-Kodaira, however some insight into these singularities can be gained by considering the splitting of fiber components along higher codimension, which are shown to be consistent with matter and Yukawa couplings for the corresponding gauge groups.

Abstract:We examine the physical significance of torsion co-cycles in the cohomology of a projective Calabi-Yau three-fold for the (2,2) superconformal field theory (SCFT) associated to the non-linear sigma model with such a manifold as a target space. There are two independent torsion subgroups in the cohomology. While one is associated to an orbifold construction of the SCFT, the other encodes the possibility of turning on a topologically non-trivial flat gerbe for the NS-NS B-field. Inclusion of these data enriches mirror symmetry by providing a refinement of the familiar structures and points to a generalization of the duality symmetry, where the topology of the flat gerbe enters on the same footing as the topology of the underlying manifold.

Abstract:A geometrisation scheme internal to the category of Lie supergroups is discussed for the supersymmetric de Rham cocycles on the super-Minkowski group $\,\mathbb{T}\,$ which determine the standard super-$p$-brane dynamics with that target, and interpreted within Cartan's approach to the modelling of orbispaces of group actions by homotopy quotients. The ensuing higher geometric objects are shown to carry a canonical equivariant structure for the action of a discrete subgroup of $\,\mathbb{T}$, which results in their descent to the corresponding orbifolds of $\,\mathbb{T}\,$ and in the emergence of a novel class of superfield theories with defects.

Abstract:We study the cohomology of a 1-parameter family Y_t of Calabi-Yau 3-folds introduced by Aspinwall and Morrison, related to the mirror quintic family. Szendrői proved that Y_t, Y_{xi t}, ..., Y_{xi^4 t}, where xi is a fifth root of unity, have the same rational Hodge structure but are not isomorphic, and conjectured that they are not birational or even derived equivalent. We confirm this by proving that their integral Hodge structures are different, and discuss how this fits with known Torelli-type theorems and counterexamples.

Abstract:This paper considers a recently-proposed string theory on $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ with one unit of NS-NS flux ($k=1$). We discuss interpretations of the target space, including connections to twistor geometry and a more conventional spacetime interpretation via the Wakimoto representation. We propose an alternative perspective on the role of the Wakimoto formalism in the $k=1$ string, for which no large radius limit is required by the inclusion of extra operator insertions in the path integral. This provides an exact Wakimoto description of the worldsheet CFT. We also discuss an additional local worldsheet symmetry, $Q(z)$, that emerges when $k=1$ and show that this symmetry plays an important role in the localisation of the path integral to a sum over covering maps. We demonstrate the emergence of a rigid worldsheet translation symmetry in the radial direction of the $AdS_3$, for which again the presence of $Q(z)$ is crucial. We conjecture that this radial symmetry plays a key role in understanding, in the case of the $k=1$ string, the encoding of the bulk physics on the two-dimensional boundary.

Abstract:We derive the Symmetry Topological Field Theories (SymTFTs) for 3d supersymmetric quantum field theories (QFTs) constructed in M-theory either via geometric engineering or holography. These 4d SymTFTs encode the symmetry structures of the 3d QFTs, for instance the generalized global symmetries and their 't Hooft anomalies. Using differential cohomology, we derive the SymTFT by reducing M-theory on a 7-manifold $Y_7$, which either is the link of a conical Calabi-Yau four-fold or part of an $\text{AdS}_4\times Y_7$ holographic solution. In the holographic setting we first consider the 3d $\mathcal{N}=6$ ABJ(M) theories and derive the BF-couplings, which allow the identification of the global form of the gauge group, as well as 1-form symmetry anomalies. Secondly, we compute the SymTFT for 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ quiver gauge theories whose holographic duals are based on Sasaki-Einstein 7-manifolds of type $Y_7 = Y^{p,k}(\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2)$. The SymTFT encodes 0- and 1-form symmetries, as well as potential 't Hooft anomalies between these. Furthermore, by studying the gapped boundary conditions of the SymTFT we constrain the allowed choices for $U(1)$ Chern-Simons terms in the dual field theory.
