Abstract:We develop an axiomatic framework for persistent homology in any degree. We prove the existence and uniqueness for both a persistent version of the Eilenberg-Steenrod axioms for classical homology and a reduced version of this set of axioms.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. We introduce topological conditions on a broad class of functionals that ensure that the persistent homology modules of their associated sublevel set filtration admit persistence diagrams, which, in particular, implies that they satisfy generalized Morse inequalities. We illustrate the applicability of these results by recasting the original proof of the Unstable Minimal Surface Theorem given by Morse and Tompkins in a modern and rigorous framework.

Abstract:In this work, we explore links between natural homology and persistent homology for the classification of directed spaces. The former is an algebraic invariant of directed spaces, a semantic model of concurrent programs. The latter was developed in the context of topological data analysis, in which topological properties of point-cloud data sets are extracted while eliminating noise. In both approaches, the evolution homological properties are tracked through a sequence of inclusions of usual topological spaces. Exploiting this similarity, we show that natural homology may be considered a persistence object, and may be calculated as a colimit of uni-dimensional persistent homologies along traces. Finally, we suggest further links and avenues of future work in this direction.

Abstract:This thesis addresses the theory of topological spaces and the foundations of persistence theory. We will discuss chain complexes and the associated simplicial homology groups, as well as their relationship with singular homology theory. Moreover, we present the fundamental concepts of algebraic topology, including exact and short exact sequences and relative homology groups derived from quotienting with subspaces of a topological space. These tools are used to prove the Excision Theorem in algebraic topology. Subsequently, the theorem is applied to demonstrate the equivalence of simplicial and singular homology for triangulable topological spaces, i.e. those topological spaces which admit a simplicial structure. This enables a more general theory of homology to be adopted in the study of filtrations of point clouds. The chapter on homological persistence makes use of these tools throughout. We develop the theory of persistent homology, the homology of filtrations of topological spaces, and the corresponding dual concept of persistent cohomology. This work aims to provide mathematicians with a robust foundation for productive engagement with the aforementioned theories. The majority of the proofs have been rewritten to clarify the relationships between the techniques discussed. The novel aspect of this contribution is the canonical presentation of persistence theory and the associated ideas through a rigorous mathematical treatment for triangulable topological spaces and closing some gaps in the existing literature.

Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to explore the ideas of persistent homology and extended persistent homology, and their stability theorems, using ideas from [Bubenik and Scott, 2014; Cohen-Steiner, Edelsbrunner, and Harer, 2007; and Cohen-Steiner, Edelsbrunner, and Harer, 2009], as well as other sources. The secondary aim is to explore the homology (and cohomology) of non-orientable surfaces, using the Klein bottle as an example. We also use the Klein bottle as an example for the computation of (extended) persistent homology, referring to it throughout the paper.

Abstract:The Quillen-McCord theorem (aka Quillen fiber lemma) gives a sufficient condition on a map between classifying spaces of posetal categories to be a homotopy equivalence. Jonathan Ariel Barmak in his paper [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1005.0538" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1005.0538">arXiv:1005.0538</a>] gives an elementary topological proof and proves a homological version of the theorem. Following his scheme of the proof, we formulate and prove the homological Quillen-McCord theorem, stable with respect to interleaving distances. To formulate the theorem and apply the scheme, we introduce persistence objects as objects in appropriate functor categories, describe a-la barcode decompositions of persistence posets, and prove several results, e.g. order extension principle for objects in Fun(I, Pos) and approximate triviality of left derived functors of approximately trivial objects in Fun(I, R-Mod).

In these notes, we provide a terse self contained description of the main ideas behind the construction of persistent homology as an invariant feature of datasets, and its stability to perturbations.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a persistent (co)homology theory for Cayley digraph grading. We give the algebraic structures of Cayley-persistence object. Specifically, we consider the module structure of persistent (co)homology and show the decomposition of a finitely generated Cayley-persistence module. Moreover, we introduce the persistence-cup product on the Cayley-persistence module and study the twisted structure with respect to the persistence-cup product. As an application on manifolds, we show that the persistent (co)homology is closely related to the persistent map of fundamental classes.

Abstract:In algebraic topology, the differential (i.e., boundary operator) typically satisfies $d^{2}=0$. However, the generalized differential $d^{N}=0$ for an integer $N\geq 2$ has been studied in terms of Mayer homology on $N$-chain complexes for more than eighty years. We introduce Mayer Laplacians on $N$-chain complexes. We show that both Mayer homology and Mayer Laplacians offer considerable application potential, providing topological and geometric insights to spaces. We also introduce persistent Mayer homology and persistent Mayer Laplacians at various $N$. The Wasserstein distance and stability of persistence diagrams associated with Mayer homology are investigated. Our computational experiments indicate that the topological features offered by persistent Mayer homology and spectrum given by persistent Mayer Laplacians hold substantial promise for large, complex, and diverse data. We envision that the present work serves as an inaugural step towards integrating Mayer homology and Mayer Laplacians into the realm of topological data analysis.

Abstract:This paper proposes a stable volume and a stable volume variant, referred to as a stable sub-volume, for more reliable data analysis using persistent homology. In prior research, an optimal cycle and similar ideas have been proposed to identify the homological structure corresponding to each birth-death pair in a persistence diagram. While this is helpful for data analysis using persistent homology, the results are sensitive to noise. In this paper, stable volumes and stable sub-volumes are proposed to solve this problem. For a special case, we prove that a stable volume is the robust part of an optimal volume against noise. We implemented stable volumes and sub-volumes on HomCloud, a data analysis software package based on persistent homology, and show examples of stable volumes and sub-volumes.

Abstract:We set up the theory for a distributed algorithm for computing persistent homology. For this purpose we develop linear algebra of persistence modules. We present bases of persistence modules, and give motivation as for the advantages of using them. Our focus is on developing efficient methods for the computation of homology of chains of persistence modules. Later we give a brief, self contained presentation of the Mayer-Vietoris spectral sequence. Then we study the Persistent Mayer-Vietoris spectral sequence and present a solution to the extension problem. Finally, we review PerMaViss, a method implementing these ideas. This procedure distributes simplicial data, while focusing on merging homological information.

Abstract:The use of persistent homology in applications is justified by the validity of certain stability results. At the core of such results is a notion of distance between the invariants that one associates with data sets. Here we introduce a general framework to compare distances and invariants in multiparameter persistence, where there is no natural choice of invariants and distances between them. We define amplitudes, monotone, and subadditive invariants that arise from assigning a non-negative real number to objects of an abelian category. We then present different ways to associate distances to such invariants, and we provide a classification of classes of amplitudes relevant to topological data analysis. In addition, we study the the relationships as well as the discriminitative power of such amplitude distances arising in topological data analysis scenarios.

Abstract:One-dimensional persistent homology is arguably the most important and heavily used computational tool in topological data analysis. Additional information can be extracted from datasets by studying multi-dimensional persistence modules and by utilizing cohomological ideas, e.g.~the cohomological cup product. In this work, given a single parameter filtration, we investigate a certain 2-dimensional persistence module structure associated with persistent cohomology, where one parameter is the cup-length $\ell\geq0$ and the other is the filtration parameter. This new persistence structure, called the persistent cup module, is induced by the cohomological cup product and adapted to the persistence setting. Furthermore, we show that this persistence structure is stable. By fixing the cup-length parameter $\ell$, we obtain a 1-dimensional persistence module, called the persistent $\ell$-cup module, and again show it is stable in the interleaving distance sense, and study their associated generalized persistence diagrams. In addition, we consider a generalized notion of a persistent invariant, which extends both the rank invariant (also referred to as persistent Betti number), Puuska's rank invariant induced by epi-mono-preserving invariants of abelian categories, and the recently-defined persistent cup-length invariant, and we establish their stability. This generalized notion of persistent invariant also enables us to lift the Lyusternik-Schnirelmann (LS) category of topological spaces to a novel stable persistent invariant of filtrations, called the persistent LS-category invariant.

Abstract:This article has two goals. First, we hope to give an accessible introduction to persistent equivariant cohomology. Given a topological group $G$ acting on a filtered space, persistent Borel equivariant cohomology measures not only the shape of the filtration, but also attributes of the group action on the filtration, including in particular its fixed points. Second, we give an explicit description of the persistent equivariant cohomology of the circle action on the Vietoris-Rips metric thickenings of the circle, using the Serre spectral sequence and the Gysin homomorphism. Indeed, if $\frac{2\pi k}{2k+1} \le r < \frac{2\pi(k+1)}{2k+3}$, then $H^*_{S^1}(\mathrm{VR}^\mathrm{m}(S^1;r))\cong \mathbb{Z}[u]/(1\cdot3\cdot5\cdot\ldots \cdot (2k+1)\, u^{k+1})$ where $\mathrm{deg}(u)=2$.

Abstract:Persistent homology is a powerful mathematical tool that summarizes useful information about the shape of data allowing one to detect persistent topological features while one adjusts the resolution. However, the computation of such topological features is often a rather formidable task necessitating the subsampling the underlying data. To remedy this, we develop an efficient quantum computation of persistent Betti numbers, which track topological features of data across different scales. Our approach employs a persistent Dirac operator whose square yields the persistent combinatorial Laplacian, and in turn the underlying persistent Betti numbers which capture the persistent features of data. We also test our algorithm on point cloud data.

Abstract:We develop persistent homology in the setting of filtrations of (Cech) closure spaces. Examples of filtrations of closure spaces include metric spaces, weighted graphs, weighted directed graphs, and filtrations of topological spaces. We use various products and intervals for closure spaces to obtain six homotopy theories, six cubical singular homology theories, and three simplicial singular homology theories. Applied to filtrations of closure spaces, these homology theories produce persistence modules. We extend the definition of Gromov-Hausdorff distance from metric spaces to filtrations of closure spaces and use it to prove that any persistence module obtained from a homotopy-invariant functor on closure spaces is stable.

Abstract:We define a class of invariants, which we call homological invariants, for persistence modules over a finite poset. Informally, a homological invariant is one that respects some homological data and takes values in the free abelian group generated by a finite set of indecomposable modules. We focus in particular on groups generated by "spread modules", which are sometimes called "interval modules" in the persistence theory literature. We show that both the dimension vector and rank invariant are equivalent to homological invariants taking values in groups generated by spread modules. We also show that the free abelian group generated by the "single-source" spread modules gives rise to a new invariant which is finer than the rank invariant. They are also thankful to an anonymous referee for their thorough reading of this paper and suggestions for improvement.

Abstract:Deep Very Large Array radio observations are presented for the REFLEX clusters RXCJ0437.1+0043 and RXCJ1314.4-2515. They are at similar distance and show similar X-ray luminosity, but they are quite different in X-ray structure. Indeed RXCJ0437.1+0043 is regular and relaxed, whereas RXCJ1314.4-2515 is characterized by substructure and possible merging processes. The radio images reveal no diffuse emission in RXCJ0437.1+0043, and a complex diffuse structure in RXCJ1314.4-2515. The diffuse source in the latter cluster consists of a central radio halo which extends to the West toward the cluster periphery and bends to the North to form a possible relic. Another extended source is detected in the eastern cluster peripheral region. Although there could be plausible optical identifications for this source, it might also be a relic candidate owing to its very steep spectrum. The present results confirm the tight link between diffuse cluster radio sources and cluster merger processes.
