Abstract:A convex body $R$ in the hyperbolic plane is reduced if any convex body $K\subset R$ has a smaller minimal width than $R$. We answer a few of Lassak's questions about ordinary reduced polygons regarding its perimeter, diameter and circumradius, and we also obtain a hyperbolic extension of a result of Fabińska.

The minimum width of $C$ over all supporting $H$ is called the thickness $\Delta (C)$ of $C$. A convex body $R \subset \mathbb{H}^d$ is said to be reduced if $\Delta (Z) < \Delta (R)$ for every convex body $Z$ properly contained in $R$. We describe a class of reduced polygons in $\mathbb{H}^2$ and present some properties of them. In particular, we estimate their diameters in terms of their thicknesses.

Abstract:For every hyperplane $H$ supporting a convex body $C$ in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^d$ we define the width of $C$ determined by $H$ as the distance between $H$ and a most distant ultraparallel hyperplane supporting $C$. We prove that if $\width_H (C) = \Delta (C)$ and if there exists a unique most distant point $j \in C$ from $H$, then the projection of $j$ onto $H$ belongs to $H \cap C$. We verify that the diameter of $C$ equals to the maximum width of $C$. We define bodies of constant width in $\mathbb{H}^d$ in the standard way as bodies whose all widths are equal. We show that every body of constant width is strictly convex. The minimum width of $C$ over all supporting $H$ is called the thickness $\Delta (C)$ of $C$. A convex body $R \subset \mathbb{H}^d$ is said to be reduced if $\Delta (Z) < \Delta (R)$ for every convex body $Z$ properly contained in $R$. We show that regular tetrahedra in $\mathbb{H}^3$ are not reduced. Similarly as in the Euclidean and spherical spaces, we introduce complete bodies and bodies of constant diameter in $\mathbb{H}^d$. We show that every body of constant width $\delta$ is a body of constant diameter $\delta$ and a complete body of diameter $\delta$. Moreover, the two last conditions are equivalent.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to present some properties of reduced spherical convex bodies on the two-dimensional sphere $S^2$. The intersection of two different non-opposite hemispheres is called a lune. By its thickness we mean the distance of the centers of the two semicircles bounding it. The thickness $\Delta (C)$ of $C$ is the minimum thickness of a lune containing $C$. We say that a spherical convex body $R$ is reduced if $\Delta (Z) < \Delta (R)$ for every spherical convex body $Z \subset R$ different from $R$. Our main theorem permits to describe the shape of reduced bodies of thickness below $\frac{\pi}{2}$. It implies a number of corollaries. In particular, we estimate the diameter of reduced spherical bodies in terms of their thickness. Reduced bodies of thickness at least $\frac{\pi}{2}$ have constant width. Spherical convex bodies of constant width below $\frac{\pi}{2}$ are strictly convex.

Abstract:For a hyperplane $H$ supporting a convex body $C$ in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^d$ we define the width of $C$ determined by $H$ as the distance between $H$ and a most distant ultraparallel hyperplane supporting $C$. The thickness (i.e., the minimum width) of $C$ is denoted by $\Delta(C)$. A convex body $R \subset \mathbb{H}^d$ is called reduced if for every body $Z \subsetneq R$ we have $\Delta(Z) < \Delta(R)$. We show that for any extreme point $e$ of a reduced body $R \subset \mathbb{H}^d$ there exists a supporting hyperplane $H$ of $R$ which passes through $e$ or its equidistant surface supporting $R$ passes through $e$. Bodies of constant width in $\mathbb{H}^d$ are defined as bodies whose all widths are equal. We prove that every complete body in $\mathbb{H}^d$ is a body of constant width.

Abstract:The present paper aims to solve some problems proposed by Lassak about the reduced spherical polygons. The main result is to show that the regular spherical n-gon has the minimal perimeter among all reduced spherical polygons of fixed thickness less than {\pi}/2 and with at most n vertices. In addition, we determine the maximal diameter of every reduced spherical polygons with a fixed thickness less than {\pi}/2. We also find the smallest spherical radius that contains every reduced spherical polygons with a fixed thickness less than {\pi}/2.

Abstract:We confirm two conjectures of Lassak on the area of reduced spherical polygons. The area of every reduced spherical non-regular $n$-gon is less than that of the regular spherical $n$-gon of the same thickness. Moreover, the area of every reduced spherical polygon is less than that of the regular spherical odd-gons of the same thickness and whose number of vertices tends to infinity.

Abstract:Abstract In hyperbolic geometry there are several concepts to measure the breadth or width of a convex set. In the first part of the paper we collect them and compare their properties. Than we introduce a new concept to measure the width and thickness of a convex body. Correspondingly, we define three classes of bodies, bodies of constant with, bodies of constant diameter and bodies having the constant shadow property, respectively. We prove that the property of constant diameter follows to the fulfilment of constant shadow property, and both of them are stronger as the property of constant width. In the last part of this paper, we introduce the thickness of a constant body and prove a variant of Blaschke’s theorem on the larger circle inscribed to a plane-convex body of given thickness and diameter.

Abstract:We prove that, among the polygons in a punctured disc with fixed angles, the perimeter is minimized by the polygon with an inscribed horocycle centered at the puncture. We generalize this to a disc with a cone point and to an annulus with a geodesic boundary component and a complete end. Then we apply this result to describe the minimum of the spine systole on the moduli space of punctured surfaces.

Abstract:Following the established terms in Euclidean geometry, we define reduced and complete convex bodies $C\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ when the width and diameter are measured with respect to a lattice $\Lambda\subset\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove that the reduced (complete) bodies in this theory are polytopes with a bounded number of vertices (facets) and that their width (diameter) is realized by at least $O(\log d)$ independent directions. Moreover, we present various methods of constructing such polytopes and relate lattice reduced simplices to the study of the flatness constant in integer programming.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that there exists a unique perimeter minimizer among all piecewise smooth simple closed curves in $M_{\kappa}^2$ enclosing area $A > 0$ $(A \leq 2{\pi}$ if ${\kappa} = 1)$, and it is a circle in $M_{\kappa}^2$ of radius $AS_{\kappa} \left( \dfrac{ \sqrt{ A ( 4 {\pi} - {\kappa} A ) } }{ 2 {\pi} } \right)$, where $AS_{\kappa}(t) := t$ if ${\kappa} = 0$, arcsin$(t)$ if ${\kappa} = 1$, sinh$^{-1}(t)$ if ${\kappa} =-1$. We also prove the isoperimetric inequality for $M_{\kappa}^2$. We give an elementary geometric proof which is uniform for all three simply connected space forms.

Dowker-type theorems for disk-polygons in normed planes

Abstract:A classical result of Dowker (Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 50: 120-122, 1944) states that for any plane convex body $K$ in the Euclidean plane, the areas of the maximum (resp. minimum) area convex $n$-gons inscribed (resp. circumscribed) in $K$ is a concave (resp. convex) sequence. It is known that this theorem remains true if we replace area by perimeter, the Euclidean plane by an arbitrary normed plane, or convex $n$-gons by disk-$n$-gons, obtained as the intersection of $n$ closed Euclidean unit disks. The aim of our paper is to investigate these problems for $C$-$n$-gons, defined as intersections of $n$ translates of the unit disk $C$ of a normed plane. In particular, we show that Dowker's theorem remains true for the areas and the perimeters of circumscribed $C$-$n$-gons, and the perimeters of inscribed $C$-$n$-gons. We also show that in the family of origin-symmetric plane convex bodies, for a typical element $C$ with respect to Hausdorff distance, Dowker's theorem for the areas of inscribed $C$-$n$-gons fails.

On reduced spherical bodies

Abstract:This thesis consists of five papers about reduced spherical convex bodies and in particular spherical bodies of constant width on the $d$-dimensional sphere $S^d$. In paper I we present some facts describing the shape of reduced bodies of thickness under $\frac{\pi}{2}$ on $S^2$. We also consider reduced bodies of thickness at least $\frac{\pi}{2}$, which appear to be of constant width. Paper II focuses on bodies of constant width on $S^d$. We present the properties of these bodies and in particular we discuss conections between notions of constant width and of constant diameter. In paper III we estimate the diameter of a reduced convex body. The main theme of paper IV is estimating the radius of the smallest disk that covers a reduced convex body on $S^2$. The result of paper V is showing that every spherical reduced polygon $V$ is contained in a disk of radius equal to the thickness of this body centered at a boundary point of $V$.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we study the hyperbolic and parabolic strip deformations of ideal (possibly once‐punctured) hyperbolic polygons whose vertices are decorated with horoballs. We prove that the interiors of their arc complexes parametrise the open convex set of all uniformly lengthening infinitesimal deformations of the decorated hyperbolic metrics on these surfaces, motivated by the work of Danciger–Guéritaud–Kassel. We also give a version of this result for the undecorated ideal polygons and once‐punctured ideal polygons.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to some extremal problems for convex polygons on the Euclidean plane, related to the concept of self Chebyshev radius for the polygon boundary. We consider a general problem of minimization of the perimeter among all $n$-gons with a fixed self Chebyshev radius of the boundary. The main result of the paper is the complete solution of the mentioned problem for $n=4$: We proved that the quadrilateral of minimum perimeter is a so called magic kite, that verified the corresponding conjecture by Rolf Walter.
