Abstract:In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become increasingly integrated into education, reshaping traditional learning environments. Despite this, there has been limited investigation into fully operational artificial human lecturers. To the best of our knowledge, our paper presents the world's first study examining their deployment in a real-world educational setting. Specifically, we investigate the use of "digital teachers," AI-powered virtual lecturers, in a postgraduate course at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Our study explores how features such as appearance, non-verbal cues, voice, and verbal expression impact students' learning experiences. Findings suggest that students highly value naturalness, authenticity, and interactivity in digital teachers, highlighting areas for improvement, such as increased responsiveness, personalized avatars, and integration with larger learning platforms. We conclude that digital teachers have significant potential to enhance education by providing a more flexible, engaging, personalized, and accessible learning experience for students.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The core problem that this paper attempts to solve is the global teacher shortage and its impact on the quality of education, especially in the field of higher education. Specifically, the authors explore how to use modern technology, especially digital teachers (Artificial Human Lecturers) generated by artificial intelligence (AI), to alleviate this problem. By introducing AI lecturers, the research aims to evaluate the performance of these digital teachers in real - educational environments and their specific impact on students' learning experiences. ### Research Background and Motivation 1. **Global Teacher Shortage**: According to the prediction of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), by 2030, the world will need an additional 44 million teachers to achieve education for all, of which 17 million teachers are needed in sub - Saharan Africa alone. Economic inequality further exacerbates this crisis. Many low - income countries spend less than 3% of their GDP on education, resulting in low teacher salaries and prompting teachers to seek overseas opportunities. In addition, the increase in student enrollment and the rise in teacher turnover also make the teacher shortage problem more severe. 2. **Limitations of Existing Educational Models**: The traditional educational model is teacher - centered, lacking in flexibility and interactivity, and it is difficult to meet the individual needs of students. With the development of technology, the field of education urgently needs innovative teaching methods and technological means to improve teaching effectiveness and students' learning experiences. ### Research Objectives To meet the above challenges, this research proposes and verifies the following two main research questions: - **RQ1**: How do changes in the four key parameters of digital teachers (appearance and role selection, non - verbal cues, voice and verbal expression, diversity and novelty) affect students' learning experiences? - **RQ2**: According to students' feedback, what are the potential improvement directions of digital teachers in practical applications? How do they view the role of digital teachers in future education? ### Methodology This research adopts a mixed - method design, including quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, to comprehensively understand students' views and experiences of digital teachers. The specific steps are as follows: - **Participant Recruitment**: 26 students were recruited from postgraduate courses at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology through convenience sampling. - **Data Collection**: A questionnaire in Quantum form was used to collect students' evaluations of digital teachers, and semi - structured interviews were conducted to gain in - depth understanding of their specific experiences and suggestions. - **Data Analysis**: Combining quantitative and qualitative data, analyze the impact of digital teachers on students' learning experiences, and identify improvement directions and future development potential. ### Main Findings The research results show that digital teachers significantly affect students' learning experiences in multiple aspects: - **Naturalness and Authenticity**: Students attach great importance to the naturalness and authenticity of digital teachers, believing that this helps to enhance interaction and a sense of participation. - **Personalization and Flexibility**: Students hope that digital teachers can provide more personalized interactions and support to adapt to different learning styles. - **Technical Improvement**: Although digital teachers have great potential, there is still room for improvement, such as increasing response speed and optimizing virtual images. ### Conclusions and Prospects This research is the first to systematically explore the application of AI digital teachers in real - educational environments, providing valuable experience and guidance for technological innovation in the field of education. Future research can further explore the application of digital teachers in different educational scenarios and develop more intelligent and personalized teaching tools to better support the development of global education. In short, this paper not only reveals the potential of AI digital teachers in alleviating teacher shortages but also provides important references and inspirations for future educational technology innovation.
