Abstract:This is a short note bridging the gap between two notions of universal abelian categories associated to exact categories, namely, Rump's quotient categories and Bodzenta-Bondal's abelian envelopes. The established connection allows us to draw several easy conclusions, in particular, we answer some (baisc) questions raised by Bodzenta and Bondal.

Abstract:We define admissible and weakly admissible subcategories in exact categories and prove that the former induce semi-orthogonal decompositions on the derived categories. We develop the theory of thin exact categories, an exact-category analogue of triangulated categories generated by exceptional collections. The right and left abelian envelopes of exact categories are introduced, an example being the category of coherent sheaves on a scheme as the right envelope of the category of vector bundles. The existence of right (left) abelian envelopes is proved for exact categories with projectively (injectively) generating subcategories with weak (co)kernels. We show that highest weight categories are precisely the right/left envelopes of thin categories. Ringel duality is interpreted as a duality between the right and left abelian envelopes of a thin exact category. The duality for thin exact categories is introduced by means of derived categories and Serre functor on them.

Abstract:In this note, we discuss several aspects of the functoriality of universal abelian factorizations associated to representations of quivers into abelian categories. After recalling the general construction of universal abelian factorizations, we review the canonical lifting procedures for exact functors and natural transformations thereof (already studied by F. Ivorra in a slightly different axiomatic framework) and we describe how these interact with general categorical constructions; for sake of simplicity, we mostly focus on the case where the quivers and representations considered are defined by actual (additive) categories and (additive) functors. We then extend these known results in two directions which have not been explored explicitly in the existing literature: on the one side, to the setting of multi-linear functors; on the other side, to the setting of abelian fibered categories. Combining these two extensions, we are able to discuss the case of monoidal structures on abelian fibered categories; the latter case has been successfully applied in the author's construction of the tensor structure on perverse Nori motives.

Universal Extensions and Ext-Orthogonal Complements of Torsion Classes

Abstract:We show that torsion pairs in Krull--Schmidt abelian categories induce an equivalence between the subcategory of torsion-free objects admitting universal extensions to the torsion subcategory, and a quotient of the ext-orthogonal complement of the torsion subcategory. This generalize an equivalence described by Bauer--Botnan--Oppermann--Steen for tilting-torsion pairs and by Buan--Zhou for functorially finite torsion pairs. The result also provides a more direct proof of the functorially finite case, not relying on the machinery of two-term silting complexes. We illustrate the equivalence in the special case of tube categories. After first appearing on the arXiv, the author learnt that the equivalence has previously been described by Demonet--Iyama.

Existence and orthogonality of stable envelopes for bow varieties

Abstract:Stable envelopes, introduced by Maulik and Okounkov, provide a family of bases for the equivariant cohomology of symplectic resolutions. The theory of stable envelopes provides a fascinating interplay between geometry, combinatorics and integrable systems. In this expository article, we give a self-contained introduction to cohomological stable envelopes of type A bow varieties (an interesting class of varieties extending Nakajima quiver varieties). Our main focus is on the existence and the orthogonality properties of stable envelopes for bow varieties. The restriction to this specific class of varieties allows us to illustrate the theory combinatorially and to provide simplified proofs, both laying a basis for explicit calculations.

From the defining equations, we compute explicitly the normalization, branch locus, ramification indices, global invariants, and the resolution of singularities. Abstract:In this article we study a relative monoidal version of the Bondal-Orlov reconstruction theorem. We establish an uniqueness result for tensor triangulated category structures $(\boxtimes,\mathbb{1})$ on the derived category $D^{b}(X)$ of a variety $X$ which is smooth projective and faithfully flat over a quasi-compact quasi-separated base scheme $S$ in the case where the fibers $X_{s}$ over any point $s\in S$ all have ample (anti-)canonical bundles. To do so we construct a stack $\Gamma$ of dg-bifunctors which parametrize the local homotopical behaviour of $\boxtimes$, and we study some of its properties around the derived categories of the fibers $X_{s}$.

Abstract:We compare and generalise the various geometric constructions (due to Ringel, Lusztig, Schofield, Bozec, Davison...) of the unipotent generalised Kac–Moody algebra associated with an arbitrary quiver. These constructions are interconnected through several geometric operations, including the stalk Euler characteristic of constructible complexes, the characteristic cycle, the Euler obstruction map, and the intersection multiplicities of Lagrangian subvarieties. We provide a proof that these geometric realisations hold for the integral form of the Lie algebra. Furthermore, by modifying the generators of the enveloping algebra, we ensure compatibility with the natural coproducts that can be defined in terms of restriction diagrams. As a result, we establish that the top cohomological Hall algebra of the strictly seminilpotent stack is isomorphic to the positive part of the enveloping algebra of the generalised Kac-Moody algebra associated with the quiver. This appears to be one of the cornerstones needed to describe the BPS algebra of very general 2-Calabi–Yau categories, which is the subject of the author's work on BPS Lie algebras for 2-Calabi–Yau categories with Davison and Schlegel Mejia.

A functorial approach to $n$-abelian categories

Abstract:We develop a functorial approach to the study of $n$-abelian categories by reformulating their axioms in terms of their categories of finitely presented functors. Such an approach allows the use of classical homological algebra and representation theory techniques to understand higher homological algebra. As an application, we present two possible generalizations of the axioms "every monomorphism is a kernel" and "every epimorphism is a cokernel" of an abelian category to $n$-abelian categories. We also specialize our results to modules over rings, thereby describing when the category of finitely generated projective modules over a ring is $n$-abelian. Moreover, we establish a correspondence for $n$-abelian categories with additive generators, which extends the higher Auslander correspondence.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative ring. An $R$-module $M$ is said to be almost projective if ${\rm Ext}^1_R(M, N) = 0$ for any $R_{\mathfrak{m}}$-module $N$ and any maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ of $R$. In this paper, we investigate rings $R$ over which every $R$-module has an almost projective envelope. We also characterize rings $R$ over which every $R$-module has an almost projective envelope with some special properties.

Abstract:This article contains a review of categorifications of semisimple representations of various rings via abelian categories and exact endofunctors on them. A simple definition of an abelian categorification is presented and illustrated with several examples, including categorifications of various representations of the symmetric group and its Hecke algebra via highest weight categories of modules over the Lie algebra sl(n). The review is intended to give non-experts in representation theory who are familiar with the topological aspects of categorification (lifting quantum link invariants to homology theories) an idea for the sort of categories that appear when link homology is extended to tangles.

Abstract:This paper clarifies basic definitions in the universal construction of topological theories and monoidal categories. The definition of the universal construction is given for various types of monoidal categories, including rigid and symmetric. It is also explained how to set up the universal construction for non-monoidal categories. The second part of the paper explains how to associate a rigid symmetric monoidal category to a small category, a sort of the Brauer envelope of a category. The universal construction for the Brauer envelopes generalizes some earlier work of the first two authors on automata, power series and topological theories. Finally, the theory of pseudocharacters (or pseudo-representations), which is an essential tool in modern number theory, is interpreted via one-dimensional topological theories and TQFTs with defects. The notion of a pseudocharacter is studied for Brauer categories and the lifting property to characters of semisimple representations is established in characteristic 0 for Brauer categories with at most countably many objects. The paper contains a brief discussion of pseudo-holonomies, which are functions from loops in a manifold to real numbers similar to traces of the holonomies along loops of a connection on a vector bundle on the manifold. It concludes with a classification of pseudocharacters (pseudo-TQFTs) and their generating functions for the category of oriented two-dimensional cobordisms in the characteristic 0 case.

Abstract:Let $\Bbbk$ be a field of characteristic zero. Motivated by the fundamental question of whether it is possible for the universal enveloping algebra of an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra to be noetherian, we study Lie algebras of derivations of associative algebras. The main result of this paper is that the universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra of derivations of a finitely generated $\Bbbk$-algebra is not noetherian. This extends a result of Sierra and Walton on the Witt algebra, as well as a result of the second author on Krichever-Novikov algebras. We highlight that the result applies to derivations of both commutative and noncommutative algebras without restriction on their growth.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to initiate a development of a new non-pointed counterpart of semi-abelian categorical algebra. We are making, however, only the first step in it by giving equivalent definitions of what we call ideally exact categories, and showing that these categories admit a description of quotient objects by means of intrinsically defined ideals, in spite of being non-pointed. As a tool we involve a new notion of essentially nullary monad, and show that Bourn protomodularity condition makes cartesian monads essentially nullary. All semi-abelian categories, all non-trivial Bourn protomodular varieties of universal algebras, and all cotoposes are ideally exact.

Abstract:We explicitly construct K-theoretic and elliptic stable envelopes for certain moduli spaces of vortices, and apply this to enumerative geometry of rational curves in these varieties. In particular, we identify the quantum difference equations in equivariant variables with quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations, and give their monodromy in terms of geometric elliptic R-matrices. A novel geometric feature in these constructions is that the varieties under study are not holomorphic symplectic, yet nonetheless have representation-theoretic significance. In physics, they originate from 3d supersymmetric gauge theories with $\mathcal{N} = 2$ rather than $\mathcal{N} = 4$ supersymmetry. We discuss an application of the results to the ramified version of the quantum q-Langlands correspondence of Aganagic, Frenkel, and Okounkov.

Abstract:Let C be an (n+2)-angulated category with an n-suspension functor Σn and X be a cluster-tilting subcategory of C. Then we show that the quotient category C/X is an n-abelian category, and C/X is equivalent to an n-cluster tilting subcategory of an abelian category mod(Σ−nX). In addition, if C has a Serre functor, we also prove that mod(Σ−nX) is Gorenstein of Gorenstein dimension at most n. As an application, we generalize recent results of Jacobsen-Jørgensen and Koenig-Zhu.
