Abstract:We establish connections between the concepts of Noetherian, regular coherent, and regular n-coherent categories for Z-linear categories with finitely many objects and the corresponding notions for unital rings. These connections enable us to obtain a negative K-theory vanishing result, a fundamental theorem, and a homotopy invariance result for the K-theory of Z-linear categories.

Abstract:We show that both the $\infty$-category of $(\infty, \infty)$-categories with inductively defined equivalences, and with coinductively defined equivalences, satisfy universal properties with respect to weak enrichment in the sense of Gepner and Haugseng. In particular, we prove that $(\infty, \infty)$-categories with coinductive equivalences form a terminal object in the $\infty$-category of fixed points for enrichment, and that $(\infty, \infty)$-categories with inductive equivalences form an initial object in the subcategory of locally presentable fixed points. To do so, we develop an analogue of Adámek's construction of free endofunctor algebras in the $\infty$-categorical setting. We prove that $(\infty, \infty)$-categories with coinductive equivalences form a terminal coalgebra with respect to weak enrichment, and $(\infty, \infty)$-categories with inductive equivalences form an initial algebra with respect to weak enrichment.

Abstract:We prove a Noetherian criterion for a sequence of modules with linear maps between them. This generalizes a Noetherian criterion of Gan and Li for infinite EI categories. We apply our criterion to the linear categories associated to certain diagram algebras defined by Patzt.

Abstract:A noetherian form is an abstract self-dual framework suitable for establishing homomorphism theorems (such as the isomorphism theorems and homological diagram lemmas) for non-abelian, as well as abelian, group-like structures. It can be seen as a unification of semi-abelian categories and Grandis exact categories (two separate generalisations of abelian categories) that retains the self-dual character of Grandis exact categories. In this paper we axiomatise a noetherian form over the category of sets, which, in a suitable sense, is an optimal noetherian form. We then show that every topos has such noetherian form as well, while in the context of a pointed category with finite products and sums, the dual of such noetherian form is exactly the form of subobjects of a semi-abelian category.

Abstract:We study various characterizations of higher sites over a given $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ which are conceptually in line with their classical ordinary categorical counterparts, and extract some new results about $\infty$-topos theory from them. First, in terms of formal $(\infty,2)$-category theory, we define a notion of higher Lawvere-Tierney operators on $\infty$-toposes which internalizes a parametrized version of the left exact modalities of Anel, Biedermann, Finster and Joyal and the left exact modalities of Rijke, Shulman and Spitters. Second, in the spirit of Lawvere's hyperdoctrines, we describe the $\infty$-toposes embedded in the $\infty$-category $\hat{\mathcal{C}}$ of presheaves over $\mathcal{C}$ as the sheaves of ideals of what we call the logical structure sheaf on $\mathcal{C}$. This naturally induces a notion of ''geometric kernels'' on $\mathcal{C}$ which play the part of higher Grothendieck topologies from the given perspective. Lastly, we study the $\infty$-category of cartesian $(\infty,1)$-sites. We generalize the notion of canonical Grothendieck topologies from Lurie's book appropriately to all geometric kernels and show an according ''Comparison Lemma'' in the best case scenario. However, we show that a corresponding topological version of the lemma in the context of Grothendieck topologies fails.

Abstract:This paper is a discussion on $\infty$-categorical approaches to Hodge-Iwasawa Theory, which was initiated in our project on the $\infty$-categorical approaches to Hodge-Iwasawa Theory. The theory aims at the serious unification of $p$-adic Hodge Theory and $p$-adic Iwasawa Theory, by taking deformation of Hodge-theoretic constructions along some consideration in Iwasawa Theory beyond the Iwasawa deformation of certain motives in the general sense. The Hodge modules in our current consideration will be essentially within $\infty$-categorical derived categories of inductive Banach modules and $\infty$-categorical derived categories of condensed solidification of certain topological modules.

Abstract:We consider several types of non-existence theorems for functors. For example, there are no nontrivial functors from the category of groups (or the category of pointed sets, or vector spaces) to any small category. Another type of questions that we consider are questions about nonexistence of subfunctors and quotients of the identity functor on the category of groups (or abelian groups). For example, there is no a natural non-trivial way to define an abelian subgroup of a group, or a perfect quotient group of a group. As an auxiliary result we prove that, for any non-trivial subfunctor $F$ of the identity functor on the category of groups, any group can be embedded into a simple group that lies in the essential image of $F.$ The paper concludes with a few questions regarding the non-existence of certain (co-)augmented functors in the $\infty$-category of spaces.

Abstract:We describe the framework for the notion of a restricted inverse limit of categories, with the main motivating example being the category of polynomial representations of the group $GL_{\infty}$. This category is also known as the category of strict polynomial functors of finite degree, and it is the restricted inverse limit of the categories of polynomial representations of $GL_n$. This note is meant to serve as a reference for future work.

Abstract:In his fundamental work, Quillen developed the theory of the cotangent complex as a universal abelian derived invariant, and used it to define and study a canonical form of cohomology, encompassing many known cohomology theories. Additional cohomology theories, such as generalized cohomology of spaces and topological André-Quillen cohomology, can be accommodated by considering a spectral version of the cotangent complex. Recent work of Lurie established a comprehensive $\infty$-categorical analogue of the cotangent complex formalism using stabilization of $\infty$-categories. In this paper we study the spectral cotangent complex while working in Quillen's model categorical setting. Our main result gives new and explicit computations of the cotangent complex and Quillen cohomology of enriched categories. For this we make essential use of previous work, which identifies the tangent categories of operadic algebras in unstable model categories. In particular, we present the cotangent complex of an $\infty$-category as a spectrum valued functor on its twisted arrow category, and consider the associated obstruction theory in some examples of interest.

Abstract:These lecture notes for the 2013 CIME/CIRM summer school Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry deal with manifestly infinite-dimensional algebraic varieties with large symmetry groups. So large, in fact, that subvarieties stable under those symmetry groups are defined by finitely many orbits of equations---whence the title Noetherianity up to symmetry. It is not the purpose of these notes to give a systematic, exhaustive treatment of such varieties, but rather to discuss a few "personal favourites": exciting examples drawn from applications in algebraic statistics and multilinear algebra. My hope is that these notes will attract other mathematicians to this vibrant area at the crossroads of combinatorics, commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, statistics, and other applications.

A Syntax for Strictly Associative and Unital $\infty$-Categories

Abstract:We present the first definition of strictly associative and unital $\infty$-category. Our proposal takes the form of a type theory whose terms describe the operations of such structures, and whose definitional equality relation enforces desired strictness conditions. The key technical device is a new computation rule in the definitional equality of the theory, which we call insertion, defined in terms of a universal property. On terms for which it is defined, this operation "inserts" one of the arguments of a substituted coherence into the coherence itself, appropriately modifying the pasting diagram and result type, and simplifying the syntax in the process. We generate an equational theory from this reduction relation and we study its properties in detail, showing that it yields a decision procedure for equality. Expressed as a type theory, our model is well-adapted for generating and verifying efficient proofs of higher categorical statements. We illustrate this via an OCaml implementation, and give a number of examples, including a short encoding of the syllepsis, a 5-dimensional homotopy that plays an important role in the homotopy groups of spheres.

Abstract:We study the problem of when triangulated categories admit unique infinity-categorical enhancements. Our results use Lurie's theory of prestable infinity-categories to give conceptual proofs of, and in many cases strengthen, previous work on the subject by Lunts--Orlov and Canonaco--Stellari. We also give a wide range of examples involving quasi-coherent sheaves, categories of almost modules, and local cohomology to illustrate the theory of prestable infinity-categories. Finally, we propose a theory of stable $n$-categories which would interpolate between triangulated categories and stable infinity-categories.
