Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:In Streets and Tian (2010) [1] the authors introduced a parabolic flow for pluriclosed metrics, referred to as pluriclosed flow. We also demonstrated in Streets and Tian (2010) (preprint) [2] that this flow, after certain gauge transformations, gives a class of solutions to the renormalization group flow of the nonlinear sigma model with B-field. Using these transformations, we show that our pluriclosed flow preserves generalized Kähler structures in a natural way. Equivalently, when coupled with a nontrivial evolution equation for the two complex structures, the B-field renormalization group flow also preserves generalized Kähler structure. We emphasize that it is crucial to evolve the complex structures in the right way to establish this fact.

Pluriclosed flow and the Hull-Strominger system

Abstract:We define a natural extension of pluriclosed flow aiming at constructing solutions of the Hull-Strominger system. We give several geometric formulations of this flow, which yield a series of a priori estimates for the flow and also for the Hull-Strominger system. The evolution equations are derived using the theory of string algebroids, a class of Courant algebroids which occur naturally in higher gauge theory. Using this, we interpret the flow as generalized Ricci flow and also as a higher/coupled version of Hermitian-Yang-Mills flow, proving furthermore that it is compatible with symmetry reduction. Regarding our main analytical results, we prove a priori $C^{\infty}$ estimates for uniformly parabolic solutions. This in particular settles the question of smooth regularity of uniformly elliptic solutions of the Hull-Strominger system, generalizing Yau's $C^3$ estimate for the complex Monge-Ampère equation. We prove global existence and convergence results for the flow on special backgrounds, and discuss a conjectural relationship of the flow to the geometrization of Reid's fantasy.

Abstract:We define a parabolic flow of pluriclosed metrics. This flow is of the same family introduced by the authors in [15]. We study the relationship of the existence of the flow and associated static metrics to topological information on the underlying complex manifold. Solutions to the static equation are automatically Hermitian-symplectic, a condition we define herein. These static metrics are classified on K3 surfaces, complex toroidal surfaces, nonminimal Hopf surfaces, surfaces of general type, and class VII+ surfaces. To finish, we discuss how the flow may potentially be used to study the topology of class VII+ surfaces.

Abstract:In prior work the authors introduced a parabolic flow of pluriclosed metrics. Here we give improved regularity results for solutions to this equation. Furthermore, we exhibit this equation as the gradient flow of the lowest eigenvalue of a certain Schr\"odinger operator, and show the existence of an expanding entropy functional for this flow. Finally, we motivate a conjectural picture of the optimal regularity results for this flow, and discuss some of the consequences.

And we extend pluriclosed flow to a flow of Hermitian-symplectic forms by adding an extra evolution equation, which is determined by the (2, 0)-part of Bismut–Ricci form. Abstract:Consider a pair of smooth, possibly noncompact, properly immersed hypersurfaces moving by mean curvature flow, or, more generally, a pair of weak set flows. We prove that if the ambient space is Euclidean space and if the distance between the two surfaces is initially nonzero, then the surfaces remain disjoint at all subsequent times. We prove the same result when the ambient space is a complete Riemannian manifold of nonzero injectivity radius, provided the curvature tensor (of the ambient space) and all its derivatives are bounded.

Abstract:On a closed Riemannian surface $(M,\bar g)$ with negative Euler characteristic, we study the problem of finding conformal metrics with prescribed volume $A>0$ and the property that their Gauss curvatures $f_\lambda= f + \lambda$ are given as the sum of a prescribed function $f \in C^\infty(M)$ and an additive constant $\lambda$. Our main tool in this study is a new variant of the prescribed Gauss curvature flow, for which we establish local well-posedness and global compactness results. In contrast to previous work, our approach does not require any sign conditions on $f$. Moreover, we exhibit conditions under which the function $f_\lambda$ is sign changing and the standard prescribed Gauss curvature flow is not applicable.

Abstract:We show that the discrete approximate volume preserving mean curvature flow in the flat torus $\mathbb{T}^N$ starting near a strictly stable critical set $E$ of the perimeter converges in the long time to a translate of $E$ exponentially fast. As an intermediate result we establish a new quantitative estimate of Alexandrov type for periodic strictly stable constant mean curvature hypersurfaces. Finally, in the two dimensional case a complete characterization of the long time behaviour of the discrete flow with arbitrary initial sets of finite perimeter is provided.

Abstract:We apply conformal flows of metrics restricted to the orthogonal distribution $D$ of a foliation to study the question: Which foliations admit a metric such that the leaves are totally geodesic and the mixed scalar curvature is positive? Our evolution operator includes the integrability tensor of $D$, and for the case of integrable orthogonal distribution the flow velocity is proportional to the mixed scalar curvature. We observe that the mean curvature vector $H$ of $D$ satisfies along the leaves the forced Burgers equation, this reduces to the linear Schrödinger equation, whose potential function is a certain "non-umbilicity" measure of $D$. On order to show convergence of the solution metrics $g_t$ as $t\to\infty$, we normalize the flow, and instead of a foliation consider a fiber bundle $\pi: M\to B$ of a Riemannian manifold $(M, g_0)$. In this case, if the "non-umbilicity" of $D$ is smaller in a sense then the "non-integrability", then the limit mixed scalar curvature function is positive. For integrable $D$, we give examples with foliated surfaces and twisted products.

Abstract:Let X be a C 1 vector field on a compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold M (dim M ≥ 2), and Λ a compact invariant set of X. Suppose that Λ has a hyperbolic splitting, i.e., T Λ M = E s ⊕〈X〉⊕E u with E s uniformly contracting and E u uniformly expanding. We prove that if, in addition, Λ is chain transitive, then the hyperbolic splitting is continuous, i.e., Λ is a hyperbolic set. In general, when Λ is not necessarily chain transitive, the chain recurrent part is a hyperbolic set. Furthermore, we show that if the whole manifold M admits a hyperbolic splitting, then X has no singularity, and the flow is Anosov.

Moreover, they provided a new interpretation of weak mean curvature flow. In this paper, we generalize their results to a general curvature setting.
