Abstract:Higher Sobolev and Hölder regularity is studied for local weak solutions of the fractional $p$-Laplace equation of order $s$ in the case $p\ge 2$. Depending on the regime considered, i.e. $$0<s\le\tfrac{p-2}{p}\quad \text{or} \quad\tfrac{p-2}{p}<s<1,$$ precise local estimates are proven. The relevant estimates are stable if the fractional order $s$ reaches $1$; the known Sobolev regularity estimates for the local $p$-Laplace are recovered. The case $p=2$ reproduces the almost $W^{1+s,2}_{\rm loc}$-regularity for the fractional Laplace equation of any order $s\in(0,1)$.

Abstract:We prove fine higher regularity results of Calderón-Zygmund-type for equations involving nonlocal operators modelled on the fractional $p$-Laplacian with possibly discontinuous coefficients of VMO-type. We accomplish this by establishing precise pointwise bounds in terms of certain fractional sharp maximal functions. This approach is new already in the linear setting and enables us to deduce sharp regularity results also in borderline cases.

Abstract:In this work, we study the higher differentiability of solutions to the inhomogeneous fractional $p$-Laplace equation under different regularity assumptions on the data. In the superquadratic case, we extend and sharpen several previous results, while in the subquadratic regime our results constitute completely novel developments even in the homogeneous case. In particular, in the local limit our results are consistent with well-known higher differentiability results for the standard inhomogeneous $p$-Laplace equation. All of our main results remain valid in the vectorial context of fractional $p$-Laplace systems.

Specifically, we establish a Hopf type lemma for positive weak super-solutions of the fractional $p-$Laplacian equation with Dirichlet condition. Abstract:In this article, we deal with the fine boundary regularity, a weighted Hölder regularity of weak solutions to the problem involving the fractional $(p,q)$-Laplacian denoted by \begin{eqnarray*} \begin{array}{rll} (-\Delta)_{p}^{s} u + (-\Delta)_{q}^{s} u &= f(x) &\text{ in } \Omega u&=0 &\text{ in } \mathbb{R}^N\setminus\Omega; \end{array} \end{eqnarray*} where $\Omega$ is a $C^{1,1}$ bounded domain and $2 \leq p \leq q <\infty.$ For $0<s<1$ and for non-negative data $f\in L^{\infty}(\Omega),$ we employ the nonlocal analogue of the boundary Harnack method to establish that $u/{d_{\Omega}^{s}} \in C^{\alpha}(\Bar{\Omega})$ for some $\alpha \in (0,1),$ where $d_\Omega(x)$ is the distance of $x$ from the boundary. A novel barrier construction allows us to analyse the regularity theory even in the absence of the scaling or the homogeneity properties of the operator. Additionally, we extend our idea to sign changing bounded $f$ as well and prove a fine boundary regularity for fractional $(p,q)$ Laplacian for some range of $s.$

Abstract:We study the boundary weighted regularity of weak solutions $u$ to a $s$-fractional $p$-Laplacian equation in a bounded smooth domain $\Omega$ with bounded reaction and nonlocal Dirichlet type boundary condition, in the singular case $p\in(1,2)$ and with $s\in(0,1)$. We prove that $u/{\rm d}_\Omega^s$ has a $\alpha$-Hölder continuous extension to the closure of $\Omega$, ${\rm d}_\Omega(x)$ meaning the distance of $x$ from the complement of $\Omega$. This result corresponds to that of ref. [28] for the degenerate case $p\ge 2$.

Abstract:This work is about global Hölder regularity for solutions to elliptic partial differential equations subject to mixed boundary conditions on irregular domains. There are two main results. In the first, we show that if the domain of the realization of an elliptic differential operator in a negative Sobolev space with integrability $q > d$ embeds into a space of Hölder continuous functions, then so do the domains of suitable fractional powers of this operator. The second main result then establishes that the premise of the first is indeed satisfied. The proof goes along the classical techniques of localization, transformation and reflection which allows to fall back to the classical results of Ladyzhenskaya or Kinderlehrer. One of the main features of our approach is that we do not require Lipschitz charts for the Dirichlet boundary part, but only an intriguing metric/measure-theoretic condition on the interface of Dirichlet- and Neumann boundary parts. A similar condition was posed in a related work by ter Elst and Rehberg in 2015, but the present proof is much simpler, if only restricted to space dimension up to 4.

Abstract:We study the fractional $p$-Laplace equation $$ (-\Delta_p)^s u = 0 $$ for $0<s<1$ and in the subquadratic case $1<p<2$. We provide Hölder estimates with an explicit Hölder exponent. The inhomogeneous equation is also treated and there the exponent obtained is almost sharp. Our results complement the previous results for the superquadratic case when $p\geq 2$. The arguments are based on a careful Moser-type iteration and a perturbation argument.

Specifically, we prove higher space-time Hölder continuity result for weak solutions of time depending nonlocal double phase problems for a particular subclass of the modulating coefficients. Using suitable approximation arguments, we further establish higher (global) Hölder continuity results for weak solutions to the stationary problems involving the operator $\mc L$ with modulating coefficients that are locally continuous.

Abstract:We prove well-posedness, Harnack inequality and sharp regularity of solutions to a fractional $p$-Laplace non-homogeneous equation $(-\Delta_p)^su =f$, with $0<s<1$, $1<p<\infty$, for data $f$ satisfying a weighted $L^{p'}$ condition in a doubling metric measure space $(Z,d_Z,\nu)$ that is possibly unbounded. Our approach is inspired by the work of Caffarelli and Silvestre \cite{CS} (see also Mol{č}anov and Ostrovski{ĭ} \cite{MO}), and extends the techniques developed in \cite{CKKSS}, where the bounded case is studied. Unlike in \cite{EbGKSS}, we do not assume that $Z$ supports a Poincaré inequality. The proof is based on the well-posedness of the Neumann problem on a Gromov hyperbolic space $(X,d_X, \mu)$ that arises as an hyperbolic filling of $Z$.

Abstract:We discuss the Hölder regularity of solutions to the semilinear equation involving the fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta)^s u=f(u)$ in one dimension. We put in evidence a new regularity phenomenon which is a combined effect of the nonlocality and the semilinearity of the equation, since it does not happen neither for local semilinear equations, nor for nonlocal linear equations. Namely, for nonlinearities $f$ in $C^\beta$ and when $2s+\beta <1$, the solution is not always $C^{2s+\beta-\epsilon}$ for all $\epsilon >0$. Instead, in general the solution $u$ is at most $C^{2s/(1-\beta)}.$

Abstract:We prove optimal regularity results in $L_p$-based function spaces in space and time for a large class of linear parabolic equations with a nonlocal elliptic operator in bounded domains with limited smoothness. Here the nonlocal operator is given by a strongly elliptic and even pseudodifferential operator of order $2a$ ($0<a<1$) with nonsmooth $x$-dependent coefficients. This includes the prominent case of the fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta)^a$, as well as elliptic operators $(-\nabla \cdot A(x)\nabla+b(x))^a$. The proofs are based on general results on maximal $L_p$-regularity and its relation to $\mathcal{R}$-boundedness of the resolvent of the associated (elliptic) operator. Finally, we apply these results to show existence of strong solutions locally in time for a class of nonlinear nonlocal parabolic equations, which include a fractional nonlinear diffusion equation and a fractional porous medium equation after a transformation. The nonlinear results are new for operators on domains with boundary; the linear results are so when $P$ is $x$-dependent nonsymmetric.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the local boundedness of local weak solutions to the following parabolic equation associated with fractional $p$-Laplacian type operators $$ \partial_t u(t,x)-\text{p.v.}\int_{\R^d}|u(t,y)-u(t,x)|^{p-2}(u(t,y)-u(t,x))J(t;x,y)\,dy=0,\quad (t,x)\in \R\times \R^d, $$ where $\text{p.v.}$ means the integral in the principal value sense, $p\in(1,\infty)$ and $J(t;x,y)$ is comparable to the kernel of the fractional $p$-Laplacian operator $|x-y|^{-d-sp}$ with $s\in(0,1)$ and uniformly in $(t;x,y)\in\R\times\R^d\times\R^d$. Unlike existing results in the literature, the local boundedness of the solutions obtained in this paper extends the known results for the linear case (i.e., the case that $p=2$), in particular with a nonlocal parabolic tail that uses the $L^1$-norm in time for all $p\in (1,\infty)$. The proof is based on a new level set truncation in the De Giorgi-Nash-Moser iteration and a careful choice of iteration orders, as well as a general Caccioppoli-type inequality that is efficiently applied to fractional $p$-Laplacian type operators with all $p>1$.

Abstract:We carry on the investigation started in [2] about the regularity of weak solutions to the strongly degenerate parabolic equation \[ u_{t}-\mathrm{div}\left[(\vert Du\vert-1)_{+}^{p-1}\frac{Du}{\vert Du\vert}\right]=f\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\mathrm{in}\,\,\Omega_{T}=\Omega\times(0,T), \] where $\Omega$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for $n\geq2$, $p\geq2$ and $\left(\,\cdot\,\right)_{+}$ stands for the positive part. Here, we weaken the assumption on the right-hand side, by assuming that $f\in L_{loc}^{p'}\left(0,T;B_{p',\infty,loc}^{\alpha}\left(\Omega\right)\right)$, with $\alpha\in(0,1)$ and $p'=p/(p-1)$. This leads us to obtain higher fractional differentiability results for a function of the spatial gradient $Du$ of the solutions. Moreover, we establish the higher summability of $Du$ with respect to the spatial variable. The main novelty of the above equation is that the structure function satisfies standard ellipticity and growth conditions only outside the unit ball centered at the origin. We would like to point out that the main result of this paper can be considered, on the one hand, as the parabolic counterpart of an elliptic result contained in [1], and on the other hand as the fractional version of some results established in [2].

Higher-order asymptotic expansions and finite difference schemes for the fractional $p$-Laplacian

Abstract:We propose a new asymptotic expansion for the fractional $p$-Laplacian with precise computations of the errors. Our approximation is shown to hold in the whole range $p\in(1,\infty)$ and $s\in(0,1)$, with errors that do not degenerate as $s\to1^-$. These are super-quadratic for a wide range of $p$ (better far from the zero gradient points), and optimal in most cases. One of the main ideas here is the fact that the singular part of the integral representation of the fractional $p$-Laplacian behaves like a local $p$-Laplacian with a weight correction. As a consequence of this, we also revisit a previous asymptotic expansion for the classical $p$-Laplacian, whose error orders were not known. Based on the previous result, we propose monotone finite difference approximations of the fractional $p$-Laplacian with explicit weights and we obtain the error estimates. Finally, we introduce explicit finite difference schemes for the associated parabolic problem in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and show that it is stable, monotone and convergent in the context of viscosity solutions. An interesting feature is the fact that the stability condition improves with the regularity of the initial data.

Regularising the Cauchy problem for Laplace's equation by fractional operators

Abstract:In this paper we revisit the classical Cauchy problem for Laplace's equation as well as two further related problems in the light of regularisation of this highly ill-conditioned problem by replacing integer derivatives with fractional ones. We do so in the spirit of quasi reversibility, replacing a classically severely ill-posed PDE problem by a nearby well-posed or only mildly ill-posed one. In order to be able to make use of the known stabilising effect of one-dimensional fractional derivatives of Abel type we work in a particular rectangular (in higher space dimensions cylindrical) geometry. We start with the plain Cauchy problem of reconstructing the values of a harmonic function inside this domain from its Dirichlet and Neumann trace on part of the boundary (the cylinder base) and explore three options for doing this with fractional operators. The two other related problems are the recovery of a free boundary and then this together with simultaneous recovery of the impedance function in the boundary condition. Our main technique here will be Newton's method. The paper contains numerical reconstructions and convergence results for the devised methods.

Abstract:We address some regularity issues for mixed local-nonlocal quasilinear operators modeled upon the sum of a $p$-Laplacian and of a fractional $(s, q)$-Laplacian. Under suitable assumptions on the right-hand sides and the outer data, we show that weak solutions of the Dirichlet problem are $C^{1, \theta}$-regular up to the boundary. In addition, we establish a Hopf type lemma for positive supersolutions. Both results hold assuming the boundary of the reference domain to be merely of class $C^{1, \alpha}$, while for the regularity result we also require that $p > s q$.
