Abstract:The universality of quantum mechanics — its applicability to physical systems of quite different nature and scales — indicates that quantum behavior can be a manifestation of general mathematical properties of systems containing indistinguishable elements, i.e., elements lying on the same orbit of some symmetry group. In this paper, we demonstrate that quantum behavior arises naturally in systems with finitely many elements connected by nontrivial symmetry groups. The “finite” approach allows one to see the peculiarities of a quantum description more distinctly without the need for concepts like “wave function collapse,” “Everett’s multiverses,” etc. In particular, under the finiteness assumption, any quantum dynamics is reduced to a simple permutation dynamics. The advantage of finite quantum models is that they can be studied constructively by means of computer algebra and computational group theory methods. Bibliography: 12 titles.

Abstract: By using the Lewis-Riesenfeld theory and the invariant-related unitary transformation formulation, the exact solutions of the {\it time-dependent} Schr\"{o}dinger equations which govern the various Lie-algebraic quantum systems in atomic physics, quantum optics, nuclear physics and laser physics are obtained. It is shown that the {\it explicit} solutions may also be obtained by working in a sub-Hilbert-space corresponding to a particular eigenvalue of the conserved generator ({\it i. e.}, the {\it time-independent} invariant) for some quantum systems without quasi-algebraic structures. The global and topological properties of geometric phases and their adiabatic limit in time-dependent quantum systems/models are briefly discussed.

Abstract:As shown in our publications, quantum theory based on a finite ring of characteristic p (FQT) is more general than standard quantum theory (SQT) because the latter is a degenerate case of the former in the formal limit p→∞. One of the main differences between SQT and FQT is the following. In SQT, elementary objects are described by irreducible representations (IRs) of a symmetry algebra in which energies are either only positive or only negative and there are no IRs where there are states with different signs of energy. In the first case, objects are called particles, and in the second antiparticles. As a consequence, in SQT it is possible to introduce conserved quantum numbers (electric charge, baryon number, etc.) so that particles and antiparticles differ in the signs of these numbers. However, in FQT, all IRs necessarily contain states with both signs of energy. The symmetry in FQT is higher than the symmetry in SQT because one IR in FQT splits into two IRs in SQT with positive and negative energies at p→∞. Consequently, most fundamental quantum theory will not contain the concepts of particle–antiparticle and additive quantum numbers. These concepts are only good approximations at present since at this stage of the universe the value p is very large but it was not so large at earlier stages. The above properties of IRs in SQT and FQT have been discussed in our publications with detailed technical proofs. The purpose of this paper is to consider models where these properties can be derived in a much simpler way.

A Universal Kinematical Group for Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:In 1968, Dashen and Sharp obtained a certain singular Lie algebra of local densities and currents from canonical commutation relations in nonrelativistic quantum field theory. The corresponding Lie group is infinite dimensional: the natural semidirect product of an additive group of scalar functions with a group of diffeomorphisms. Unitary representations of this group describe a wide variety of quantum systems, and have predicted previously unsuspected possibilities; notably, anyons and nonabelian anyons in two space dimensions. We present here foundational reasons why this semidirect product group serves as a universal kinematical group for quantum mechanics. We obtain thus a unified account of all possible quantum kinematics for systems with mass in an arbitrary physical space, and clarify the role played by topology in quantum mechanics. Our development does not require quantization of classical phase space; rather, the classical limit follows from the quantum mechanics. We also consider the relationship of our development to Heisenberg quantization.

Abstract:The current form of quantum mechanics is very successful and is almost certainly correct. It is remarkable, however, that the entire structure-from the mass, spin and charge labels on particlelike states to antisymmetry to broken internal symmetries to gauge transformations to the equations of motion-is built upon concepts from group representation theory. That is, the theory is constructed exactly as if it were a representational form of an underlying theory. Our proposed form for the underlying theory is that it is based on a linear equation, OF(V)=0. F is a function of some set of independent, currently unknown variables V, with O being a linear, partial differential operator in those variables. The operator is assumed to be invariant under a group of transformations of the Vs, homomorphic to the direct product of the inhomogeneous Lorentz group and the internal symmetry group. In such a theory, a state vector, denoted by a ket with group-theoretic labels, would represent a function of the independent variables. In addition to explaining the group representational structure of quantum mechanics, an underlying theory offers insight into gauge theory.

Abstract:The concept of quantum representation of finite groups (QRFG) has been a fundamental aspect of quantum computing for quite some time, playing a role in every corner, from elementary quantum logic gates to the famous Shor's and Grover's algorithms. In this article, we provide a formal definition of this concept using both group theory and differential geometry. Our work proves the existence of a quantum representation for any finite group and outlines two methods for translating each generator of the group into a quantum circuit, utilizing gate decomposition of unitary matrices and variational quantum algorithms. Additionally, we provide numerical simulations of an explicit example on an open-access platform. Finally, we demonstrate the usefulness and potential of QRFG by showing its role in the implementation of some quantum algorithms and quantum finite automata.

Abstract:We propose an interpretation for the meets and joins in the lattice of experimental propositions of a physical theory, answering a question of Birkhoff and von Neumann in [1]. When the lattice is atomistic, it is isomorphic to the lattice of definably closed sets of a finitary relational structure in First Order Logic. In terms of mapping experimental propositions to subsets of the atomic phase space, the meet corresponds to set intersection, while the join is the definable closure of set union. The relational structure is defined by the action of the lattice automorphism group on the atomic layer. Examining this correspondence between physical theories and infinite group actions, we show that the automorphism group must belong to a family of permutation groups known as geometric Jordan groups. We then use the classification theorem for Jordan groups to argue that the combined requirements of probability and atomicism leave uncountably infinite Steiner 2-systems (of which projective spaces are standard examples) as the sole class of options for generating the lattice of particle Quantum Mechanics.

Abstract:The principles of the theory of quantum groups are reviewed from the point of view of the possibility of their use for deformations of symmetries in physical models. The R-matrix approach to the theory of quantum groups is discussed in detail and is taken as the basis of the quantization of classical Lie groups, as well as some Lie supergroups. We start by laying out the foundations of non-commutative and non-cocommutative Hopf algebras. Much attention has been paid to Hecke and Birman-Murakami-Wenzl (BMW) R-matrices and related quantum matrix algebras. Trigonometric solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation associated with the quantum groups GL_q(N), SO_q(N), Sp_q(2n) and supergroups GL_q(N|M), Osp_q(N|2m), as well as their rational (Yangian) limits, are presented. Rational R-matrices for exceptional Lie algebras and elliptic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation are also considered. The basic concepts of the group algebra of the braid group and its finite dimensional quotients (such as Hecke and BMW algebras) are outlined. A sketch of the representation theories of the Hecke and BMW algebras is given (including methods for finding idempotents and their quantum dimensions). Applications of the theory of quantum groups and Yang-Baxter equations in various areas of theoretical physics are briefly discussed.

Abstract:We explore finite-field frameworks for quantum theory and quantum computation. The simplest theory, defined over unrestricted finite fields, is unnaturally strong. A second framework employs only finite fields with no solution to x^2+1=0, and thus permits an elegant complex representation of the extended field by adjoining i=\sqrt{-1}. Quantum theories over these fields recover much of the structure of conventional quantum theory except for the condition that vanishing inner products arise only from null states; unnaturally strong computational power may still occur. Finally, we are led to consider one more framework, with further restrictions on the finite fields, that recovers a local transitive order and a locally-consistent notion of inner product with a new notion of cardinal probability. In this framework, conventional quantum mechanics and quantum computation emerge locally (though not globally) as the size of the underlying field increases. Interestingly, the framework allows one to choose separate finite fields for system description and for measurement: the size of the first field quantifies the resources needed to describe the system and the size of the second quantifies the resources used by the observer. This resource-based perspective potentially provides insights into quantitative measures for actual computational power, the complexity of quantum system definition and evolution, and the independent question of the cost of the measurement process.

Abstract:We develop a version of quantum mechanics that can handle nonassociative algebras of observables and which reduces to standard quantum theory in the traditional associative setting. Our algebraic approach is naturally probabilistic and is based on using the universal enveloping algebra of a general nonassociative algebra to introduce a generalized notion of associative composition product. We formulate properties of states together with notions of trace, and use them to develop GNS constructions. We describe Heisenberg and Schrödinger pictures of completely positive dynamics, and we illustrate our formalism on the explicit examples of finite-dimensional matrix Jordan algebras as well as the octonion algebra.

Abstract:We establish a noncommutative analogue of the first fundamental theorem of classical invariant theory. For each quantum group associated with a classical Lie algebra, we construct a noncommutative associative algebra whose underlying vector space forms a module for the quantum group and whose algebraic structure is preserved by the quantum group action. The subspace of invariants is shown to form a subalgebra, which is finitely generated. We determine generators of this subalgebra of invariants and determine their commutation relations. In each case considered, the noncommutative modules we construct are flat deformations of their classical commutative analogues. Our results are therefore noncommutative generalisations of the first fundamental theorem of classical invariant theory, which follows from our results by taking the limit as q -> 1. Our method similarly leads to a definition of quantum spheres, which is a noncommutative generalisation of the classical case with orthogonal quantum group symmetry.

Abstract:In 1992 V.Drinfeld formulated a number of problems in quantum group theory. In particular, he suggested to consider ``set-theoretical'' solutions to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, i.e. solutions given by a permutation R of the set $X\times X$, where X is a fixed set. In this paper we study such solutions, which in addition satisfy the unitarity and nondegeneracy conditions. We discuss the geometric and algebraic interpretations of such solutions, introduce several constructions of them, and make first steps towards their classification.

Abstract:The basic ingredients of the groupoid interpretation of Quantum Mechanics are discussed. Starting with the motivation to consider measure groupoids as the appropriate statistical and kinematical setting to describe quantum mechanical systems, the algebra of observables of the system is constructed as the von Neumann algebra of the groupoid. The interpretation of the theory for classical systems is briefly analysed. As a final application of these ideas, Feynman's sum-over-histories interpretation of the theory is discussed in the groupoid picture.

On an algebraic generalization of the quantum mechanical formalism

Abstract:One of us has shown that the statistical properties of the measurements of a quantum mechanical system assume their simplest form when expressed in terms of a certain hypercomplex algebra which is commutative but not associative.1 This algebra differs from the non-commutative but associative matrix algebra usually considered in that one is concerned with the commutative expression ½(A × B + B × A) instead of the associative product A × B of two matrices. It was conjectured that the laws of this commutative algebra would form a suitable starting point for a generalization of the present quantum mechanical theory. The need of such a generalization arises from the (probably) fundamental difficulties resulting when one attempts to apply quantum mechanics to questions in relativistic and nuclear phenomena.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the construction and analysis of the Wigner functions for noncommutative quantum mechanics, their marginal distributions and star-products, following a technique developed earlier, {\it viz\/,} using the unitary irreducible representations of the group $\g$, which is the three fold central extension of the abelian group of $\mathbb R^4$. These representations have been exhaustively studied in earlier papers. The group $\g$ is identified with the kinematical symmetry group of noncommutative quantum mechanics of a system with two degrees of freedom. The Wigner functions studied here reflect different levels of non-commutativity -- both the operators of position and those of momentum not commuting, the position operators not commuting and finally, the case of standard quantum mechanics, obeying the canonical commutation relations only.

A Possible Generalization of Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:A "minimal" generalization of Quantum Mechanics is proposed, where the Lagrangian or the action functional is a mapping from the (classical) states of a system to the Lie algebra of a general compact Lie group, and the wave function takes values in the corresponding group algebra. This formalism admits a probability interpretation and a suitable dynamics, but has no obvious classical correspondence. Allowing the Lagrangian or the action functional to take values in a general Lie algebra instead of only the real number field (actually the u(1) algebra) enlarges the extent of possible physical laws that can describe the real world. The generalized quantum dynamics of a point particle in a background gauge field is given as an example, which realizes the gauge invariance by a Wilson line structure and shows that some Schrodinger-like equation can be deduced within this formalism. Some possible developments of this formalism are also discussed.

Abstract:We give a path integral construction of the quantum mechanical partition function for gauged finite groups. Our construction gives the quantization of a system of $d$, $N\times N$ matrices invariant under the adjoint action of the symmetric group $S_N$. The approach is general to any discrete group. For a system of harmonic oscillators, i.e. for the non-interacting case, the partition function is given by the Molien-Weyl formula times the zero-point energy contribution. We further generalise the result to a system of non-square and complex matrices transforming under arbitrary representations of the gauge group.
