Abstract:In this paper, we present a construction of abelian Paley type group schemes which are inequivalent to Paley group schemes. We then determine the equivalence amongst their configurations, the Hadamard designs or the Paley type strongly regular graphs obtained from these group schemes, up to isomorphism. We also give constructions of several families of non-abelian Paley type group schemes using strong multiplier groups of the abelian Paley type group schemes, and present the first family of p-groups of non-square order and of non-prime exponent that contain Paley type group schemes for all odd primes p.

Abstract:Semiabelian groups are a family of finite solvable groups that have played an important role in the inverse Galois problem and the minimal ramification problem. In this paper, we establish several sufficient conditions for a solvable group to be semiabelian mainly by using its Sylow subgroups. We also present a family of non-semiabelian 2-groups.

Abstract:Motivated by a connection between semi-regular relative difference sets and mutually unbiased bases, we study relative difference sets with parameters (m,n,m,m/n) in groups of non-prime-power orders. Let p be an odd prime. We prove that there does not exist a (2p,p,2p,2) relative difference set in any group of order 2p^2, and an abelian (4p,p,4p,4) relative difference set can only exist in the group Z"2^2xZ"3^2. On the other hand, we construct a family of non-abelian relative difference sets with parameters (4q,q,4q,4), where q is an odd prime power greater than 9 and q=1(mod4). When q=p is a prime, p9, and p=1(mod4), the (4p,p,4p,4) non-abelian relative difference sets constructed here are genuinely non-abelian in the sense that there does not exist an abelian relative difference set with the same parameters.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:A subgroup H of a finite group G is said to be s-semipermutable in G if it is permutable with every Sylow p-subgroup of G with (p, |H|) = 1. We say that a subgroup H of a finite group G is S-semiembedded in G if there exists an s-permutable subgroup T of G such that TH is s-permutable in G and T∩H≤Hs¯G, where Hs¯G is an s-semipermutable subgroup of G contained in H. In this paper, we investigate the influence of S-semiembedded subgroups on the structure of finite groups.

If P is seminormal in G, then the following statements hold: 1) G is a p-soluble group and P′ ≤ O p (G); 2) l p (G) ≤ 2 and l π (G) ≤ 2; 3) if a π-Hall subgroup of G is q-supersoluble for some q ∈ π, then G is q-supersoluble.

On Special Subvarieties of the Universal Semi-abelian Scheme and Pink Conjectures

Abstract:The universal Poincaré torsor, or more generally the universal semi-abelian scheme, can be viewed as a mixed Shimura variety. We give a classification of special subvarieties of the universal semi-abelian scheme of arbitrary toric rank. Given this classification, we show that the Zilber-Pink conjecture for mixed Shimura varieties implies the Zilber-Pink conjecture for semi-abelian varieties, correcting an error in an unpublished manuscript of Pink. Moreover, we give a more reasonable reformulation of the Relative Manin-Mumford Conjecture for semi-abelian schemes.

Abstract:We show that for algebraic groups over local fields of characteristic zero, the following are equivalent: Every homomorphism has a closed image, every unitary representation decomposes into a direct sum of finite-dimensional and mixing representations, and that the matrix coefficients are dense within the algebra of weakly almost periodic functions over the group. In our proof, we employ methods from semi-group theory. We establish that algebraic groups are \emph{compactification-centric}, meaning $sG = Gs$ for any element $s$ in the weakly almost periodic compactification of the group $G$.

Abstract:Let σ = {σi|i ∈ I} be some partition of the set of all primes ℙ, G a finite group and σ(G) = {σi|σi ∩ π(G) ≠ ∅}. A set H of subgroups of G is said to be a complete Hall σ-set of G if every member ≠ 1 of H is a Hall σi-subgroup of G for some σi ∈ σ and H contains exactly one Hall σi-subgroup of G for every σi ∈ σ(G). A subgroup H of G is said to be: σ-semipermutable in G with respect to H if HH i x = H i x H for all x ∈ G and all Hi ∈ H such that (|H|, |Hi|) = 1; σ-semipermutable in G if H is σ-semipermutable in G with respect to some complete Hall σ-set of G. We study the structure of G being based on the assumption that some subgroups of G are σ-semipermutable in G.

Sparse groups need not be semisparse

Abstract:In 1999 Michael Hartley showed that any abstract polytope can be constructed as a double coset poset, by means of a C-group $\C$ and a subgroup $N \leq \C$. Subgroups $N \leq \C$ that give rise to abstract polytopes through such construction are called {\em sparse}. If, further, the stabilizer of a base flag of the poset is precisely $N$, then $N$ is said to be {\em semisparse}. In \cite[Conjecture 5.2]{hartley1999more} Hartley conjectures that sparse groups are always semisparse. In this paper, we show that this conjecture is in fact false: there exist sparse groups that are not semisparse. In particular, we show that such groups are always obtained from non-faithful maniplexes that give rise to polytopes. Using this, we show that Hartely's conjecture holds for rank 3, but we construct examples to disprove the conjecture for all ranks $n\geq 4$.

Semigroup algorithmic problems in metabelian groups

Abstract:We consider semigroup algorithmic problems in finitely generated metabelian groups. Our paper focuses on three decision problems introduced by Choffrut and Karhum\"{a}ki (2005): the Identity Problem (does a semigroup contain a neutral element?), the Group Problem (is a semigroup a group?) and the Inverse Problem (does a semigroup contain the inverse of a generator?). We show that all three problems are decidable for finitely generated sub-semigroups of finitely generated metabelian groups. In particular, we establish a correspondence between polynomial semirings and sub-semigroups of metabelian groups using an interaction of graph theory, convex polytopes, algebraic geometry and number theory. Since the Semigroup Membership problem (does a semigroup contain a given element?) is known to be undecidable in finitely generated metabelian groups, our result completes the decidability characterization of semigroup algorithmic problems in metabelian groups.

Abstract:A condition on abelian p -groups, that of being finitely fully transitive , is defined and studied. It is shown that many groups satisfy this condition, including all of the separable groups. We also consider the class of groups G for which there is an ordinal such that is finite and is universally fully transitive . It is shown that the groups in either of these classes have the property that every uniformly fully inert subgroup is commensurable with a fully invariant subgroup. This gives a positive answer to a conjecture of Dardano et al. (Int J Group Theory 7(3):17–62, 2018) for the groups in these classes.

Abstract:In \cite{Pillay} and more formally in \cite{Onshuus-Pillay} it was asked whether open subgroups of $p$-adic algebraic groups are ($p$-adic) semialgebraic, equivalently, definable in the structure $(\mathbb Q_{p}, +, \times)$. We give a positive answer in the commutative case. Together with results of \cite{Prasad} this leads to a positive answer for reductive algebraic groups.

Abstract:A subset $X$ of an Abelian group $G$ is called $semiaf\!fine$ if for every $x,y,z\in X$ the set $\{x+y-z,x-y+z\}$ intersects $X$. We prove that a subset $X$ of an Abelian group $G$ is semiaffine if and only if one of the following conditions holds: (1) $X=(H+a)\cup (H+b)$ for some subgroup $H$ of $G$ and some elements $a,b\in X$; (2) $X=(H\setminus C)+g$ for some $g\in G$, some subgroup $H$ of $G$ and some midconvex subset $C$ of the group $H$. A subset $C$ of a group $H$ is $midconvex$ if for every $x,y\in C$, the set $\frac{x+y}2:=\{z\in H:2z=x+y\}$ is a subset of $C$.
